PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As you will read below, our California Statewide Law EnforcementAssociation (CSLEA) staff has processed the Fraternal Order ofPolice (FOP) 2018 active membership cards. These membershipcards are issued by FOP to peace officer members and havebeen sent to mailing addresses CSLEA has on file. Any of ourmembers can update their mailing addresses at any time by using our online form. Pleasekeep in mind, if you have a change of address, the state does not notify CSLEA.

I continue to spend much of my timemeeting with legislators and making visitsto the Capitol. This is important work thatallows CSLEA to put a stop to bills that do

not support the interests of our members orare not in the best interest of public safetyor consumer protection. We track bills thatthreaten jobs, benefits, retirement security,public safety and more.

I am also working with CSLEA boardmembers to interview and vet candidatesfor local and state offices. It is importantthat we endorse candidates who supportlabor, working families, the education ofour children, protecting our pensions, lawenforcement, public safety, and consumerprotection. As you may be aware, the United States Supreme Court will be hearing a very importantlabor case, Janus V. AFSCME, on February 26, 2018. This case is about fees collectedby public-sector unions for collective-bargaining and grievance costs. CSLEA views thiscase as a well-funded political attack on public employees and their unions. This is amove by the wealthy and deceptive “right to work” movement which strips power fromlabor associations and aims to give corporations strength to support their interests. Webelieve a decision in favor of Janus will be a major setback for America’s workforce.

On a final note, please keep in your thoughts, the families of the seven law enforcementofficers in our country who lost their lives in the first 10 days of this month. Six of theseven died from gunfire. Through the Officer Down Memorial Page mobile app, I amalerted when an officer is killed in the line of duty. It seems nearly every day I receive anotification on my phone. That sick, sad feeling returns to the pit of my stomach each and

every time. This is a tragic time of extreme loss and pain for these officers’ families andthey need our support and prayers. Surviving spouses, children and parents will gothrough life missing the love, support and guidance from the stellar individual that wastaken from them. We honor and thank the brave men and women who wear the badgeand, who daily, confront danger to protect and serve.

SACRAMENTO - What California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA)Member Sal Martinez experienced after he was the victim in an off-duty, possible hit-and-run vehicle accident was more than anyone could have imagined. Even though he was thevictim in this accident, and acted as most peace officers would have, Sutter CountyDistrict Attorney Amanda Hopper chose to prosecute Martinez for assault with a deadlyweapon and brandishing. He was also fired from his job as a California AlcoholicBeverage Control (ABC) agent.
