2. ExecutiveSummaryThisreportcoverstheperiod:1January2016to31March2016inclusive.

• CentralisedCSETeam:o Alongwithusersandservicepartners,wehaveidentifiedkeystrategicpriorities

forthetechnicalworkofthecentralisedCSEteamoverthecomingyeartomaximizethebenefitoftheCSEservicetotheusercommunity(moreinformationinSection7below.

o AJenkinsContinuousIntegration(CI)serverhasbeensetupandconfiguredandasmallsetofinitialcompilertestsimplemented.

o WehaveexchangedapplicationusagedatawiththeNERSCHPCsiteandareintheprocessofanalysingthedatatounderstandwheresimilaritiesanddifferenceslie.ThisshouldhelpexplorehowuniquetheARCHERworkloadisandwherewecanbestshareinformation.

• Training:o Wedelivered19days(408student-days)offace-to-facetraininginthequarter

at6differentlocations,withanaveragefeedbackscorebetterthan“verygood”.o Wedelivered3virtualtutorialsasliveinteractivewebinarswithanaverageof

21attendeespersession.o Scheduleofvirtualtutorialswasalteredfrominitialplantoensureuserswere

keptup-to-datewiththenewfeaturesofamajorARCHERsoftwareupgrade(inFebruary),andtheassociatedavailabilityofOpenMP4.0(inMarch).

o ThefirsttrainingcoursetousetheResearchDataFacility(RDF)andassociatedDataAnalyticCluster(DAC)wassuccessfullyruninMarchtopromotebetterdatamanagementonARCHER.

o Thethirdfollow-upsurveyonlonger-termimpactoftraininghasbeencompletedandtheresultsanalysed;ashortreportwillbesenttotrainingpanelandEPSRCinApril.Thesurveyindicatedthattraininghasastrongimpactonusers'knowledgeanduseofHPCsystemsingeneral.

o 36peoplesuccessfullycompletedtheARCHER“drivingtest”inQ1,29ofwhomhavesubsequentlyappliedforandreceivedauseraccount.

o TheARCHERtrainingprogrammewashighlightedattheARCHERChampionsmeetingandwediscussedhowattendeescanaccesstrainingmaterialandcollaboratetobroadenthereachofHPCtraining..

o WeareusingPRACEfundingtooffertravelbursariestotheweek-longARCHERSummerSchooltrainingeventinJuly.

• ARCHEROutreachProject:o ThefirstARCHERChampionsface-to-facemeetingwasheldon16-17March

2016inEdinburgh.Theeventwasconsideredextremelyusefulbythosewhoattended.ItcoveredabroadrangeoftopicstofacilitatediscussionofwhatthenextstepisfortheARCHERChampionsprogramme.

o TheARCHEROutreachteamstaffedaboothattheBigBangFair(13-19March).Theboothshowcasedthreeinteractiveactivities:WeeARCHIE,designingasupercomputer,andparallelsorting.Wehadaround6000interactionswithchildrenoverthe4days.

o WehavebeensuccessfulinourproposalstoprovideWomeninHPCworkshopsatISC16andSC16;planninghasnowbegunforbothevents.

• eCSE:o Of59projectsacceptedforthefirst5calls,54havestartedand29ofthesehave

nowcompleted.14finalreportshavebeenreceived;morefinalreportsareexpectedduringthenextquartertobereviewedattheeCSE08panelmeetinginlateJune/earlyJuly

o The5projectswhichhavenotyetstartedarefromthemostrecentclosedcall(eCSE07),andareallduetostartwiththenextfewmonths

o AcallhadpreviouslygoneoutforearlycareerresearcherstoattendaneCSEPanelmeetingasobserverswiththeaimofgivingsuchresearchersabetterinsightintothemechanismofselectiontoassistinthepreparationoffundingproposals.Wereceived17proposalsandataselectionmeetingon25January2016,ninecandidateswereselectedtoattendPanelsoverthenextyear.OnesuchcandidateattendedtheeCSE07meetingandfoundthisaverypositiveexperience.

• ParallelI/OBenchmarking:o ParallelI/Operformancewasidentifiedasoneofthekeytechnicalareasforthe

CSEtemtoworkonoverthecomingyear.Inparticular,wewanttounderstandhowstandardI/Obenchmarks(suchasIOR)relatetoI/OpatternsinrealapplicationssothatwecanbothmonitortheI/OperformanceofARCHERfilesystemsinarealisticwayandalsoprovideinputtofutureprocurementsonhowtospecifyI/Obenchmarks.

o WorkwithusergroupstoidentifyasetofI/Obenchmarks(bothsyntheticandrealapplications)thatcanberunacrossavarietyofsystemstoprovideanoverviewofparallelI/Otechnologyperformance.WearecollaboratingwithotherHPCservices(JASMINE,DiRAC,MetOffice),vendorsandusercommunitiestomakethisworkasusefulaspossible.

o ProvidespecifictechnicaladviceforARCHERusersonhowtomaximisetheirI/Operformanceontheservicebasedondifferentusagemodes.

• Training:o Onecourseattendeegaveascoreof“verybad”forarecentcourse.Fromtheir

moredetailedfeedbackwebelievethiswasduetoamisunderstandingoverthecoursecontent,althoughwehavereviewedthecoursepublicityanditwasexplicitaboutthecontent.Feedbackiscurrentlycompletelyanonymoussowecannotfollowthisupanyfurther.Asaresult,wearenowincludingtheoptionforattendeestoentercontactdetailsonthefeedbackform.

o Thenew“ObjectOrientedProgrammingwithFortran”coursewasrunforthefirsttime.Althoughitattractedarelativelysmallclassof6attendees,halfofthemgaveitthehighestratingof“excellent”andweareinvestigatingrunningthiscourseagaininQ3.

o AnonlineQ&AsessiononuserissueswithMPIhasbeenscheduledforQ2.Theoutcomesofthisvirtualtutorialwillbeusedtoinformthecontentofthenewcourseon“DevelopingScalableScientificApplicationswithMPI”toberuninQ4.

• ARCHEROutreacho Bestpracticepaperon“Howtoimprovetherepresentationofwomenat

• QE2:ThepercentageofallqueriesnotifiedbytheHelpDesktotheContractorthathavebeensatisfactorilyresolvedorotherwisecompletedbytheContractorwithina4-monthperiodfromthedateitwasfirstnotifiedtotheContractor.ServiceThreshold:80%;OperatingServiceLevel:90%.

CentralisedCSETeam:StrategicPrioritiesIncollaborationwithusergroupsandtheotherServicepartners,theCSEservicehasidentifiedanumberofpriorityareastoinvesttechnicaleffortfromthecentralisedCSEteam.Themeetingsidentifiedthreekeyareasandanumberofadditionalareas.Thisidentificationandprioritizationprocesshasanumberofaims:

1. EnsuretechnicalworkundertakenbythecentralisedCSEteamisofmaximumbenefittotheARCHERusercommunity.

2. EnsurethattheCSEservicepartnerseffectivelywithothergroups(e.g.CrayCoE,DiRACbenchmarkingteam)inanyjointtechnicalworktobringbenefittotheARCHERusercommunity

3. EnsurethatUKnationalHPCserviceshavethebesttechnicaldataonwhichtobaseprocurementdecisions

Thethreekeyareasidentifiedare:ParallelI/OPerformanceHPCusersandapplicationdevelopersoftenpoorlyunderstandparallelI/Operformanceintermsof:

• what“good”performanceactuallyisonaparticularfilesystem;• whataparticularapplicationdoes;• whatbenchmarksillustrate.

WewillrunanumberofbenchmarkstounderstandI/Operformanceinproductionandmaketheresultspublicallyavailable.Thesebenchmarkswillinclude:

• Syntheticbenchmarks:IOR(multiplemodels),EPCCI/Obenchmark.ThisincludesunderstandinghowtheyrelatetohowusersactuallyperformI/O.

• Applicationbenchmarks:identifyapplicationsfromtheusercommunitythatareI/Oboundinsomeway.

Wewillalsoidentifyasubsetofbenchmarksthatcanberunregularly(usingtheCIserver)tobuildupstatisticalpictureofperformancevariationinproduction.Finally,wewillcollaboratewithotherpartiestocompareperformanceforthebenchmarksacrossdifferentsystemsandtechnologies.UnderstandingtheARCHERApplicationLandscapeUnderstandingwhichapplicationsareusedonARCHERandbywhomhasadirectbearingonstructuringtheserviceinthebestwayfortheusercommunityandalsoonunderstandingwhatisrequiredfromanyfuturenationalservice.WealreadycollectstatisticonapplicationsrunningonARCHERandwillextendthistocollect:

• thelibrariesandcompilersused,andhowoftenusersrecompileapplications;• memoryusagepatterns;• I/Ousagepatterns;• energyusagebyapplications.

Wewillalsoanalysethedatasettounderstandif:

• theARCHERprocurementbenchmarksstillrepresenthowthesystemisactuallyusedcurrently;

• wherethegrowthareasarefornationalHPCusage.AssessingNewHPCTechnologiesOnekeyquestionthatwedonotcurrentlyhaveaconcreteanswertois:Whatperformancecanyougetoutoffutureprocessor/memorytechnologiesfromthemajorapplicationsinuseonARCHERwiththelimitedportingeffortthatusersanddevelopersusuallyhaveavailablewhenmovingtoanewHPCsystem.

o FeedbackfromtheeventindicatedthatallwhoattendedwereengagedandwouldliketostayinvolvedintheChampionsprogramme.InthefeedbackformattendeesprovidedtheChampionseventwithanaveragescoreof4.2outofapossible5.0.

courseoftheevent..o Overthefourdays,wehadover2590recordeddirectinteractionswithchildren

throughtheactivities,andweestimatethatwespoketoatleastanother3000childrenwhodidnotdirectlyinteractwiththeactivities.

• Teacherandoutreachambassadorspack:o Workhasnowbegunontheteacherandoutreachambassadorspacks.Weare

liaisingwithschoolstoensurethattheteachermaterialcomplimentsthecurriculum,andhavestartedtoengagetheARCHERChampionscommunitywiththeoutreachambassadorsprogram.

• Nationaloutreachactivitiesdesignedtoreachawidegeographicaldistributionofschoolsandchildren.

o WeplantoobtainaccreditationfromtheChildren’sUniversityforouron-lineoutreachmaterial.Thisnationwideschemeoperatesacredit-basedpassportschemeandshouldprovidebenefittoschoolchildrenonanationwidelevel.

o WeplantoattendtheBigBangFairagainin2017tomaximizeourreturnoninvestmenttodiscussHPCwiththegeneralpublic.

OverviewofeCSEEffort

• TheeCSEpersonmonthsawardeduptoandincludingthe7theCSEcallareshownin

blue.• Atleast672personmonthswillbeawardedbytheendoftheproject(14FTEsfor4

years).• 582personmonthshavebeenawardedsofarover59awardedeCSEprojects.

eCSECall1

• 12ofthe14projectshavecompletedwith11finalreportsreceived.Onereportispresentlyoverdueandisbeenpursued.

• Oftherunningprojects,ariskanalysisidentifiedallprojectsasbeingofeitherloworverylowriskapartfromeCSE01-019thatwasconsideredtobeofmediumriskduetodifficultiesinagreeingstaffingfortheproject.

o ThisprojectisnowalmostcompleteandisbeingmonitoredviatheeCSEcontactwithinthecentralisedCSEteam.Theprojectisprogressingwell.

• 8ofthe9projectshavecompletedwith3finalreportsreceived.3overduefinalreportsarebeingpursued.
