Project Details The Challenge

this test range was built in the 1940s and has an amazing history of

Weapons testing, Satellite launches and lunar & Planetary Spacecraft

tracking to name but a few. in 2011, the existing communication

system was replaced by a range control & Safety System (rccS).

as many as 150 people at some 100 range locations required

instant voice communications, in almost limitless combinations, to

satisfactorily monitor all aspects of a test Program including launch,

flight termination, Safety template management, communication,

receipt and Processing of telemetry flight Data, etc.

many gauntlets were thrown down, not least being to satisfy the

stringent Range Control Safety System (RCSS) specification and

understanding and fulfilling the requirements from a Defence

perspective. Such military specifications must be strictly adhered

to as they are extremely precise and demand the utmost in system

reliability, operational flexibility and future re-configuration capability.

technically, it was necessary to utilize and integrate the latest iP

technology over fibre optics with the very old, existing, analogue cable

infrastructure and to work with cable distances to individual intercom

stations of up to 20km and more. Wireless solutions are extremely

restricted and in this instance, not allowed. Some intercom stations

even required remote, cabled headsets with speech control capability

that would be up to 200m from the main intercom unit.

The Solution

the commend rccS provides numerous and varied channels of

communication between master control Stations, intercom stations,

Long-distance Headset units and UHF/VHF Mobile Radio units. Direct,

one-to-one Intercom conversations are held in full, open duplex where

both parties can speak and listen simultaneously. up to 48 conference

Channels and Radio Nets are available with both pre-configured and

freely-selectable participation options. Multiple Public Address zones

are accessible from any number of authorized locations.

the ee 380 control Desks control and monitor all aspects of the

communication system across the test range. When a missile test is

underway, no time can be lost. Seconds really do count, so simple

operation was very high on the need-to-have list. This was made

possible by the extremely flexible and configurable Commend software

while Direct Access buttons, tri-state LEDs and Alpha-numeric station

displays all combine to keep the operator fully informed as to what is

happening at any given moment.
