March Celebrates Women's History Month

Multi-talented Tennessee Tribune publisher and civil rights activist, Rosetta Miller-Perry was born Rosetta Irvin on July 7, 1934 in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. The steel mills attracted her parents, Anderson Irvin and Mary Hall Irvin to Coraopolis from New Orleans, Louisiana. Miller-Perry grew up near the Allegheny River where she spent her first four years on her aunt’s house boat. She attended McKinley Elementary School and Coraopolis Junior High School. A good student, who read the Pittsburgh Courier and played the organ for her church, Miller-Perry graduated from Coraopolis Senior High School in 1952.

Accepted by Howard University, Miller-Perry was disappointed when a close relative spent her tuition money. Moving to Chicago, she attended Herzl Community College and Cortes Peters Typing School while working for Spiegel’s. Perry joined the United States Navy in 1954, where she worked for Adam Bush in the Pentagon and for the Adjutant General’s Office in Germany.

Miller-Perry completed her B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Memphis in 1956 and her D.M.S. from the John A. Gumpton School of Mortuary Science in 1957. In 1958, she attended Tennessee State University and then Meharry Medical College for nurses training as she worked for Southern Funeral Home. Actively involved in the civil rights struggle, Miller-Perry worked closely with Z. Alexander Looby, Curley McGruder, Reverend Kelly Miller Smith and other leaders. When Looby’s home was bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1960, Miller-Perry moved to Memphis. She worked closely with SCLC and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She was brought into the United States Civil Rights Commission (USCRC) in 1960 as a clerk typist, then as a field representative. Assigned to cover the Memphis Garbage Strike in 1968, Miller-Perry witnessed the suspicious activities of the FBI, “The Invaders” and the chaos after the murder of Dr. King. Assigned to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in 1975, Perry became Nashville Area Director of the EEOC. She retired from government service in 1990.

Miller-Perry founded Perry and Perry Associates in 1990 and published Contempora, a Tennessee-focused African American magazine. In 1992, Perry founded the community-oriented Tennessee Tribune in order to focus on issues like health, education, and voter registration. She established the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce (GNBCC) in 1998. That same year, Miller-Perry created the Anthony J. Cebrun Journalism Center in partnership with Dell Computers to prepare young people for careers in journalism. In 2006, she published the names of registered voters in the predominantly black districts, who did not vote and increased voter turnout from 35% to 65%. A civic dynamo, Miller-Perry serves on numerous boards. The Rosetta I. Miller Scholarship at Memphis State University was created in her honor and the annual $1,000 Rosetta Miller-Perry Award for Best Film by a Black Filmmaker is presented at the Nashville Film Festival.

Mother Fannie Bell Waters - A Birthday CelebrationBy A.J. Dugger IIIThe Tennessee Tribune

Mother Fannie Bell Waters was surrounded by family and friends as she celebrated her 90th birthday on

Saturday, February 9 at Born Again Church. During the spectacular event, Waters received birthday letters from Governor Bill Haslam, Bishop Charles Blake Sr, and Senator Lamar Alexander. Waters' daughter, Dr. Sandra Holt and gospel legend BeBe Winans hosted the celebration and provided video birthday messages to her from Bishop T.D. Jakes and Dr. Oz. “I would love to know your secret to longevity,” Oz said in his video. “Best of wishes to you and enjoy your birthday.” Wearing a blue suit and black tie, Jakes was just as warm and friendly in his video message. “What a blessing...what a wonderful life. All the things that God has taught you has benefited everyone around you.” He wrapped up his video by asking, “Mother, can I have a little bit of cake?” Later in the evening, Delores “Mom” Winans sung a touching song to Waters at the event.

36 years ago, Born Again Church was founded in Waters' living room. She married her first boyfriend, the late Pastor Fred Waters, in a union that lasted 65 years. The party lasted from 2pm to 6 pm. Holt has been the director of The University Honors Program at Tennessee State University since 1993. During her time there, she taught speech and drama to Oprah Winfrey and other graduates of TSU. She received “The Thurgood Marshal Community Leadership Award” for display of professional and civic excellence. Referred to as “Dr. Mom” by her students, Holt established The Dr. Sandra Holt Scholarship which is offered to students every year at TSU. The birthday party was a fitting tribute to Waters, a local legend.

CHRISTIAN WISDOM “Free” by Tamika Christian

Hello Saints!!

Today GOD wants you to know that JESUS has set us FREE!! FREE Saints!! FREE!!! I don't know about you but this year was a hard year for me. I had one trial after the

other, I dealt with pain that I thought I would never feel, I thought that my heart would hurt forever....BUT GOD..stepped in and helped me to overcome my trials....BUT GOD...healed my pain...BUT GOD...put my heart back together again. Every test that GOD helped me to overcome is now a TESTIMONY for me...do you want to know why...It is because HE set me FREE! GOD took the burdens in my life and made things brand new.

My sisters and brothers as you pray, let GOD know the desires of your heart!! Write down on a piece of paper what you are seeking GOD for and BELIEVE with all your heart that if it is in the will of GOD it will be awarded unto you.

When you step outside today, look to the sky...throw your hands up...and yell...GOD I AM READY FOR MY BLESSINGS!!!!

Talking Points

Life by Don Brock

Life can be defined as “the entire period during which somebody is, has been, or will yet be alive” (Encarta Dictionary). Life is Epoch in nature! It’s built on a stage and lived in a phase among people in an age, or moment of time. Once born we as humans, the recipients of life, are given a set amount of continuation in this life to modify and amend all that exist around us. Without a doubt every person has a purpose and each individual an idea of the significance and essence of their existence. It is with that thought in mind that

all persons search out not only the cause for their lives but the fulfillment of his/her life inside their new found purpose.

Today whenever I ask the question “what were you born for?” many different answers are relayed. I was born to be a teacher one might say, a doctor, a pilot or even a car salesman. Many feel that their vocation is an indication or Inclination of purpose and fulfillment. We often equated great passion with great purpose and arguably rightfully so. But what if I said that the job you do at church, home, work, or school is not the “real” reason you exist. What I’m about to say will astound you but mostly cause your perception of reality to change. What if I said that every man, women, boy and girl has the exact same reason for living yet unaware? To be continued…

If you try to suppress a sneeze, you can rupture a blood vessel in your head or neck and die.

Praise Him in AdvanceBy Bishop Calvin Lockett

Hebrews 11:1 (TLB) What is faith? It is the confident assurance thatsomething we want is going to happen...

When the announcer would call someone's name as the next contestant on “The Price is Right”, the person called would begin to celebrate. The individual called on stage whose bid was closest to the actual retail price didn't just"stroll" to the platform, but they celebrated as they went up to stand beside Drew Carey. When the announcer showed this lady a new car that she'd be playing to win, she screamed and shouted as if she'd

already won it!The contestants on, "The Price is Right" praised in advance as if what they wanted was already theirs.

Those contestants gave me a benchmark to where my faith needs to ascend. The Living Bible's translation of Hebrews 11:1 asks the question and then answers it with this rendering, "What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen..." (Hebrews 11:1) My prayer for all believers today is that our faith will mature to the point that we can, "Praise God in advance" for what we are believing Him to do.

Let's Pray: "Father, help us to praise You in advance for what we believe You're about to do, in Jesus' Name, amen."

Is Your Fatigue and Shortness of Breath Symptoms of Early Heart failure? (Part 5)

Convenient Shopper Magazine presents “Your Health Today” with Dr. Gregory Fryer

Dr. Gregory Fryer, M.D. is a board certified Family Medicine physician who has been in practice for over 16 years.

Today we will focus on medications used to treat heart failure and avoid heart failure exacerbations. Most of the time a person who has heart failure will need

ongoing medication to treat the diseased heart. It is essential that the person with heart failure stay on the medications and use them as directed by his/her physician. It is also important that the person understands why he/she is taking the medication, the action of the medication, and discuss any side effects with his/her physician.

Heart failure is basically a worn out heart because of damage and/or disease and the treatment goal is to rehabilitate and recondition the heart and help it work less but more efficiently.

The mainstay of medicinal treatment for heart failure is a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). ACE inhibitors and ARBs reduce the amount of work the heart does by decreasing the pressure against which the heart has to work in order to pump blood throughout the body.

Another class of medications used to treat heart failure is beta blockers but only certain beta blockers have been proven to reduce death rates of people with heart failure. Beta blockers reduce

the work of the heart by slowing the frequency which the heart beats.

Depending on the person’s underlying heart disease and/or hypertension the person may also be treated with diuretics to decrease the amount of fluid in the blood vessels or digoxin which helps the heart squeeze/pump more effectively. There are other classes of medications used for heart failure but this is the extent to which we will discuss medications in this series.

If you have heart failure, remember, know what medications you are taking and why you are taking them and discuss your treatment with your physician and understand your treatment.

Next time we will conclude our discussion about heart failure.

Increased Fatigue and Shortness of Breath May be Heart Failure

Today we will start a serious discussion on heart failure. Heart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by signs and symptoms resulting from a failure of the cardiovascular system to adequately receive and/or deliver blood to the body at rest or during exercise.

Death from cardiovascular reasons is the number one cause of all deaths in the United States. Although all other cardiovascular disease prevalence and incidence are decreasing, heart failure is the only one that is increasing in both prevalence and incidence. The rising incidence of heart failure is related to several factors like the increased survivability of people who have heart attacks and an aging population. Although people are surviving heart attacks more because of improved treatments, the heart attack often damages the left ventricle which is the main pumping chamber. The five-year

survivability rates for heart failure are only 50 percent.

The death rate from heart failure has increased 35 percent in the past 25 years. Unfortunately, the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure are often delayed because many people do not recognize the early symptoms of increased feelings of tiredness or fatigue and shortness of breath. Many people consider these symptoms a part of getting older and do not seek immediate attention. If you or someone you know have coronary artery disease, have had a heart attack, or have risk factors for coronary artery disease (history of smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, positive family history of heart disease) and start to experience increased feelings of tiredness or fatigue and shortness of breath, then seek or get your loved one to seek medical evaluation. Team PurposeTeam Purpose recently visited The Tennessee Prison For Women in February to celebrate their Black History Month Program. Visiting members were Treva Gordon, Eva Barnes, Toney Dabney, and our student intern Ashley Sisco. Special thanks to Chaplain Yolanda Walker and to Ms. Hill. The purpose of Team Purpose is to provide outreach services to those who are incarcerated. To also assist with programs and support. We minister at the Tennessee Prison For Women on average 4-5 times per year. We are blessed to have our community support.

Our Student Intern Ashley Shares Her Experience: “When I was told I was going to go to the Tennessee Prison for Women I was a little shocked. I didn’t really know what to expect, but the only thing I could think was why would we be going to this place. I was a little worried,

but I didn’t really think too much about it. Being here was completely different than what I thought a prison would be like.It seemed as if these women in the prison were very happy to be around “regular” people. It seemed, also, as if they had a lot of respect for the guards and teachers that were there. When I think of inmates, I think of people who always want to cause problems, and this was the last thing that I saw. Being here was an eye opener. There were so many women who looked like

they longed to have the life I have, but will never have the opportunity because of the decisions they have made.I just want to point out that I do not agree with what these women have done, but they are not all bad people. They have just made some bad decisions. Coming here was a very rewarding experience for me, and I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to go, to do that.” -Ashley Sisco

In the course of an average lifetime you will, while sleeping, eat 70 assorted insects and 10 spiders.
