you’re trying to change your students.

Now that I’ve been in youth ministry for a while, people ask me for ideas for their youth groups. The first thing I suggest is 30 Hour Famine. I haven’t found anything else that does so much. Youth learn about compassion, how they can change things one child at a time, and how to be more like Jesus.

Objective and strategy:The goal of the End Malaria campaign is to help readers recognize the serious global health threat perpetuated by an insect that is merely a nuisance in developed countries. Edgy, in-your-face visuals catch the reader’s attention; straightforward, fact-based copy communicates the truth about the problem and prompts readers to respond.

Objective and strategy:Micro is an evolution of World Vision’s microfinance work (till now funded predominantly through major donors) that reaps the benefits of Web-based mass marketing. Creative Solutions worked rapidly with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to develop a site that allows individual donors to connect one-to-one with hardworking but poor entrepreneurs: after selecting a loan to fund, the donor receives online updates on the loan repayment and their entrepreneur’s success. The Micro site is search-engine optimized and designed in a modular method to allow for the testing of offers and content and to facilitate the purchase path.

Objective and strategy:This campaign exposes child slavery for what it is: a violation of human rights and therefore a “human wrong.” The power of the creative comes from punchy, direct copy and a clear call to action coupled with striking images of the specific types of injustices perpetrated upon children.

The 30 Hour Famine has been life-changing for so many of our students and has directly resulted in more and more students (and adults) signing on for mission trips and service projects. I once read that in order for students to see themselves as disciples of Jesus, we need to give them opportunities to BE disciples. The 30HF provides that opportunity—they see they CAN make a difference!

– Marlene, youth leader

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Motivated by our faith in Jesus Christ, we serve alongside the poor and oppressed as a demonstration of God’s unconditional love for all people.

In 2008, 87 percent of World Vision’s total revenue was used for programs that benefit children, families, and communities in need.

The 30 Hour Famine is just one way World Vision fulfills its commitment to change lives and seek justice in the name of Christ.

about World VisionThis experience for me was a life-changing event. I got to know some of the other members of my youth group that I didn’t talk to as much before. I got closer to God, and felt His presence there with me that whole time . . . I cannot wait to do it again next year.

– Alicia, participant

All I can say is that we encountered God in a whole new way. We know the funds raised will help save lives—but during our Famine, some of our young people were saved, too. We can’t wait till next year! – Matt, youth leader

30 Hour FamineA few empty stomachs can change your students.A few empty stomachs can change the world.

Today, close to a billion people won’t get enough to eat. And for more than 13,000 kids, there will be no tomorrow because of something completely preventable: HUNGER.

Every year, roughly half a million students raise their voices—and raise funds—to fight hunger. Thousands of children around the world are fed and cared for. But while you probably know that’s important, it’s not why you should do the Famine.

We know that budgets are tight, and that the number of youth programs competing for your attention is large. What World Vision offers you is a partnership with your ministry. We’ll provide you with a life-changing event that will bring your students closer to Christ and each other—while they raise funds to help feed hungry children through World Vision.

here’s how it works . . .We provide everything you need—FREE. Thus, no hit to your budget. All the tools you need are there.

When you’ve done the Famine, you’ll see an impact on your students that almost no other event can accomplish. And as your group raises funds to help provide food and care for children around the world, you’re supporting our ministry in return.

do the Famine?why should I?

Famine works

Love God. Raise funds. Feed the world. (It really is that simple.)

Every $30 your students raise through 30 Hour Famine can help feed and care for a hungry child for a month.

Did you know the average Famine group raises

enough to help feed and care for 60 kids for a

month? What will your group’s goal be?

in five simple steps . . .1. Sign up. Visit www.30hourfamine.org or call

1.800.7.FAMINE. We’ll send everything your group needs. FREE.

2. Raise funds. Before your Famine event, group members find Famine donors and collect funds to help feed hungry kids.

3. Get hungry. Your group will experience the reality of hunger by going without food for 30 hours. Activities like this year’s all-new TRIBE game will open eyes (and hearts) to the needs of those affected by poverty and hunger.

4. Send help. After your Famine, send the money you’ve raised to World Vision—and start changing lives right away.

5. Celebrate change. Your students will grow closer to Christ and each other as they help save lives. Get ready to see new levels of compassion, caring, and commitment—change that will last long after this year’s Famine is over.

Go ahead. Challenge your group. Discover the difference 30 hours can make.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. You and your group can do something about it.

World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine is a worldwide movement of students who are serious about serving God and fighting hunger—all on an empty stomach. And when they take on this challenge together, you’ll see them grow closer to Christ and each other.

Objective and strategy:This year’s theme, “On an Empty Stomach,” encourages youth to defy the conventional wisdom that running on empty means you can’t make an impact. In fact, through the 30 Hour Famine, teens can love God, raise funds, and feed the world—a simple idea with a life-changing impact. The design and messaging for this campaign is fun, bold, and empowering. The theme was integrated into over 60 print, video, and co-branded pieces, including preview materials that build excitement, event materials that keep the momentum going, and fulfillment materials that close the loop and set the stage for 2010.

Estate tax laws are changing in 2009

Dear Friend,

I love a good story.

Whether it’s a child

rescued from hunger

or the testimony of

someone like Pat (see below), who’s been

helping children in need for well over 40

years, stories have the power to change lives.

Maybe that’s why Jesus told so many

parables. His stories lingered in people’s

hearts, never to be forgotten.

What will your story be? Whether you’ve

been blessed with a prosperous estate or

feel more like the woman who put her

two small coins into the temple treasury

(Mark 12), you have a legacy to leave.

You have a story worth telling.

At World Vision, we are honored to be

part of your story.

Sincerely,

Rich StearnsPresident, World Vision U.S.

Are your plans up to date?A new tax law went into effect on January 1, eliminating the federal estate tax for most people. As a result, many Americans stand to benefit from immediately updating their plans.

New tax laws are one of many reasons to review your estate plan regularly. It may be time for an update if you’ve experienced changes to any of the following:

•Yourfinancialsituation

•Yourlovedones’needs

•Yourcharitableinterests

•Yourbeneficiarychoices

To learn how new tax laws or other life changes may affect your estate plan, call one of our gift planning staff today at 1.888.511.6441.

Blessing. Gratitude. Generosity. These are the defining marks of Pat’s life. “God has always given me plenty so I can be a blessing to others,” she says.

Having been a child sponsor for the best part of five decades, Pat recently decided to

add World Vision to her estate plan, too: “You’re the beneficiary on my IRAs, CDs,

and even my house when my husband and I no longer need it.”

Now, she says, “I can have the satisfaction of knowing that the money I don’t need

will be put to good use. Supporting children through World Vision is by far the most

rewarding and secure investment I have ever made.”

Objective and strategy:The “My Legacy” campaign was developed to cultivate donors and establish the Gift Planning team as a resource and partner for them. The campaign comprises mobill inserts, Web testimonies, ads, and three mailings that include newsletters with information on topics like estate planning and gift annuities, plus tips such as changes to estate-tax laws and key questions to ask attorneys about planned giving. The creative strategy is based on donor testimonies told in the donors’ own words—compelling, third- person endorsements of the impact and lasting legacy made possible through planned giving.

Objective and strategy:This year’s campaign theme, “… not my HIV,” highlights the uni-que bond between mother and child. The tone communicates warmth and strength—calling to mind a mother’s love and quiet determination to protect her child from harm. Rather than por-traying HIV-positive mothers as victims, the copy is hopeful and empowering, encouraging readers to imagine “what could be” if we join together to end mother-to-child transmission. This is not only what HIV-positive mothers hope for their children; it is a rallying cry for everyone who is determined not to allow HIV to be passed to an innocent generation.
