    RegionalTrailisduetothediversityoclimate,

    topography,geology,andsoils.Theseincludeold-

    growthDouglasfrorests,oakwoodland,serpentine

    grasslands,nativebunchgrasses,areasocoastal

    scrub,andchaparral.Trailsidehabitatshostawide

    varietyoplantsincludingninerare,threatened,and

    endangeredspecies.

    WildlifeOpportunitiestoseewildliealongthetrailare

    abundant.Trailuserscanspotseveralspecieso

    songbirds,ducks,andraptorsincludingbaldeagles

    andgoldeneagles.Squirrels,rattlesnakes,coyote,andotherwildliecanalsobeseen,includingthe

    occasionalbobcatormountainlion.

    Sevenrare,threatened,andendangeredanimalsare

    oundinthearea,includingthreespeciesobuttery

    andtheSanFranciscogartersnake.Springtime

    visitorsmaycomeacrossyoungdeerseparatedrom

    TheSawyerCampsegmentisthemostpopular,usedby

    bicyclists,joggers,skaters,andhikers.The6-milesegment

    beginsatHillcrestBlvd.inMillbraeandcontinuesto

    CrystalSpringsRoadinSanMateo.Thisportionothe

    trailisassociatedwith1800slandownerLeanderSawyer,

    whooeredoodandlodgingtotravelers.ThistrailoersviewsotheCrystalSpringsReservoirandthePeninsula

    Trailuserscanadmirethetreewhileusingnearbypicnictables.Restroomsarealsoavailablehere.

    ThisdramaticlandmarkwasbuiltbytheCityoSanFranciscoasamonumenttotheengineeringachievementthatbroughtwaterromHetchHetchytotheBayArea.

    Themonument,whicheaturesutedcolumns,Corinthiancapitals,andareectingpool,ismanagedbytheSFPUCandisopenweekdays9am4pm.Specialusepermitscanbeobtainedbycalling650-872-5900.

    Bicyclists,joggers,hikers,skatersandamilieswithstrollersocktoaportionothetrailclosedtovehicletrafceachSunday,seasonally.ThesectionrunsalongCaadaRoadbetweenHighway92andEdgewoodRoad.Thisisagreatopportunitytoenjoyspectacularviewsromthis2.5-milestretchoroad,reeocars.Forinormation,call

    JuanBautistaDeAnzaNationalHistoricTrailThis1,210-milehistoricroute

    romArizonatoSanFranciscocommemoratesthe1775-1776SpanishexpeditionthatledtotheoundingothePueblooSanJose,theMissionandPresidiooSanFrancisco,andtheMissioninSantaClara.

    TheexpeditionexploredaportionotheCrystalSpringsRegionalTrailbetweentheSanAndreasandCrystalSpringsreservoirs.TimberromtheareawasusedtobuildtheSanFranciscoPresidioandMission.

    PeninsulaWatershed

    The23,000-acrePeninsulaWatershedisownedandmanagedbytheSanFranciscoPublicUtilitiesCommission(SFPUC),andisdesignatedasaStateFishandGameReuge.TheCrystalSpringsRegionalTrailiswithintheScenicandRecreationEasementotheWatershed.Trailusersarerequiredtostayonthedesignatedtrail.

    RunoromtheWatershedfllstheCrystalSprings,SanAndreas,andPilarcitosreservoirs.Toprotectthewatersource,accesstotheWatershedislimited.However,guidedtoursalongtheFifeld-CahillRidgeTrail,aportionotheBayAreaRidgeTrail,providearareviewotheWatershedandcanbescheduledatwww.swater.orgorbycallingtheSFPUCat650-652-3203.

    ThestunningCrystalSpringsandSanAndreasReservoirsfllaritvalleyormedbytheSanAndreasFault.Twodams,oneatthesouthernendotheSanAndreasReservoirandanotheratthemidpointotheCrystalSpringsReservoir,holdwatercapturedromthePeninsulaWatershedandwaterdeliveredromtheHetchHetchyReservoirinYosemiteNationalPark.ThereservoirssupplywatertoSanFranciscoandthePeninsula.
