DESCRIPTION
Last year we were asked to create a mini magazine for Crystal Ski. They asked us to write and design this for them, as they love our approach to the slopes. It was inserted into the Telegraph newspaper and also used at the Scottish, London and Birmingham ski shows as well as Freeze. Copies were put into there high street stores and sent to all Crystal customers who book trips.TRANSCRIPT

We’ve been putting together ski and snowboard magazines for 21 years, giving us a real feel for what UK skiers want, no matter where on
the globe you’re headed. Every season, our writers, photographers, fi lmers and bloggers, are in the thick of it, fi ring back snowy reports from the skiing front-line.
Despite this, we know that choosing where to go is tricky, no matter how informed you are. Number of lifts? Skiable terrain? Crèche at the bottom of the slope? Ski-in, ski-out? Height of the bottom lift station? Only you’ll know how to juggle these priorities, but we’ve picked out plenty
of safe bets over the following pages to help with the decision-making.
Once you’ve chosen, there’s nothing more for it, than to sit back and relax. Some of you will have great snow; others won’t. But we know from taking thousands of trips over the decades, the vast majority of you will come home tired and very happy, no matter what the conditions. And that’s why we keep returning to the mountains, time and time again. Have a great season, wherever you ski.

Italy has been a hot tip for years with its amazing value
So even as the snow stayed average rather than brilliant and the season reneged on its early promise, we felt strangely fulfi lled after our December snowfest, which ties in with almost every early season experience we’ve had for years. Selva, in Val Gardena, Italy, hosts the fi rst European downhill in mid December and we’ve been there before that to catch some early turns.
ITALYItaly has been a hot tip for years with its amazing value, but it’s a different experience to the more packaged French resorts. We’ve had every experience in the Dolomites from Easter family trips to full on off-piste explorations, with usefully-placed leg-aching pistes, immaculate beginner slopes and one-euro coffees over the past two seasons. A fi ve-euro pizza at the top of the hill? Try Val di Fassa, sir. Followed by either a) the inevitably undercrowded cable car to a selection of super-long reds, b) a bombardino (egg, whisky, cream… sleep) or c) a series of south-facing runs zig-zagging up and along the valley?
Northern Italy, generally accessed from Turin, is a more Alpine experience (we’d guess that it’s because the resorts are in the Alps rather
than the Dolomites). The smart set aim for Courmayeur at the head of the Aosta Valley, under the shadow of Mont Blanc. Well, the Italian smart set head all over Italy to resorts that we Brits know well enough but barely visit, like Cortina, Madonna di Campiglio and Corvara; laden with Michelin-starred restaurants on unlikely mountain tops and terrifi c hotels.
Another Aosta regional, Cervinia – sort of across the valley and down a bit from Courmayeur – has a useful trick up its sleeve. Seriously good value (with very decent grub if eating out) the already-decent ski area, directly under the Matterhorn, links directly into Zermatt.
SWITZERLANDI’d gladly be dropped into the Dolomites and challenge anyone to a view-off, but the iconic Swiss resort of Zermatt tips everywhere else into second. Making the most of the magnetic appeal of the most mountainy-shaped mountain around, the resort hasn’t stinted on the ski area which is, frankly, vast. Every level of skier is sorted; epic height guarantees snow with beginner areas near the top, a whole valley dedicated to freeride powder and, we suspect purely to catch out the apres ski crowd, near-silent electric cars.

Linking resorts is all the rage
europe
Yes, it is a bit of a stroll to get around and make the most of the resort, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who begrudges wandering around, surrounded by 4000m peaks and skiing up to just 700m shy of them.
FRANCEYou don’t have to stretch to get great service: until recently, Italy had focussed on getting Germans and the odd disaffected Austrian who’s fed up with St Anton’s endless terrain, onto their slopes. Given the high standards our Teutonic cousins expect, every Brit ski tripper comes back deeply impressed with piste quality, hospitality and value. La Thuile, hovering on the French border and linked to La Rosiere, is at the high value end but still delivers a vast ski area and range of accommodation. We’d head there with our families, but as with all these destinations it’s too easy to pigeonhole them.
La Plagne is plonked into the family bracket yet I spent a trip early season tree skiing, off-piste and as a base for overnight touring in the Vanoise National Park. Link up with Les Arcs via the Vanoise Express and there’s frankly too much for a beginner to gets to grips with.Linking resorts is all the rage. The classic is the
Espace Killy. Well, one of the classics – there’s also the Three Valleys (now four and a bit, after a bout of enthusiastic lift construction), the Portes du Soleil, Dolomitiski, Skiwelt… See, we said it was catching. Anyhow, back to Killy and up to the very top of the Espace, Tignes. Home of glacier skiing, hugely Brit-friendly and indeed hugely huge, Tignes is a resort almost every UK skier visits, often at several times in their skiing career. As a nipper it’s a bit large, but as a second or third timer the variety, simplicity of navigation and ability to ski never-ending reds makes it compelling. As skills develop and families grow in ability and confi dence, the scope for exploring keeps increasing. Val d’Isère has more at the fabulous end of accommodation but then you pay more to be there. Hotels, ski-in, ski-out, apartments – Tignes takes it.
THE PYRENEESThe Pyrenees tends to hover on and off the map for popularity. A few years ago, more package skiers went to Andorra (population 75 plus a freshly-released pack of wolves) than to Switzerland (certainly more than 75, but less wolves). Andorra has but four resorts, with Pas

de la Casa and Arinsal taking the majority of visitors. A lot has happened in the past fi ve years, with accommodation and pistes being developed to make southern European skiing more, well, northern European. But tax-free… Because the Pyrenees is the closest mountain range to the Atlantic, it can get some highly enthusiastic dumps of snow. Thanks to the improved infrastructure, this is now retained for much longer so the variety of skiing is pretty consistent throughout the season.
FRANCE – SOUTHStaying south-ish, Serre Chevalier, Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d’Huez are the biggies in the French Southern Alps, with the latter edging the family and better accommodation end of the market. There’s a lot to go at with lifts up to the mighty Pic Blanc at 3330m and the “are my legs going to last out?” Sarenne Glacier run. At 16km, it’s only just shy of the skiable length of the more famous but increasingly curtailed Vallee Blanche in Chamonix.

OUR PICK: ZERMATTA perennial Fall-Line favourite, this swanky Swiss resort is rather brilliantly the place you can win an amazing, once-in-a-ski-life £5000 holiday to (simply turn over for details).
Why do we rate it so highly? Well, put simply, it’s a fantastic traditional alpine destination; packed with steeps, moguls, and pistes you can ride all-year round, thanks to the Matterhorn glacier. We’ve no idea why the slopes are not more clogged come Spring either, as we’ve not found a late season destination with better snow conditions. But it’s not something we are complaining about!
Other stuff? Well, we normally can’t be bothered with all that, get up early, pay a small charge, and ride the perfectly-groomed runs before the lifts open. But here, with the Matterhorn towering over you, as the sun breaks through, it does feel pretty special. Plus you get a gut-buster breakkie in the Ice restaurant at Trockener Steg thrown-in too.
Once that’s gobbled, we like to do the resort’s mega ski-safari, descending a monster 12,500 metres in one day, hooning as far as Valtournenche. No lift or slope is used twice, so you get to see a huge amount of hill, while following the route couldn’t be simpler, with signs at each cable car exit. All you need do is keep your planks well-waxed, decide which of the mountain’s 38 restaurants to have lunch at, and tell your brain to shut up when your thighs relay the message that they’re on fire!➥ www.crystal.co.uk/r/zermatt
If you’re trying to pluck up courage to get booked, bear in mind that the US, utterly submerged in snow until May, had a howler the year before with resorts closing earlier than they did in Europe this season just gone. The one bit of snow forecasting I can confidently make is that no-one has the faintest idea what’s going to happen, season on season.
What I can briefly describe is the experience we had at the end of April this year. That was in a lowish mini-resort, barely open and with a balance of rattling down early-morning rock-hard pistes and
then bouncing through afternoon slush. Very few runs were open, yet our mixed ability group finished every day feeling very skied out. We knew what to expect, we still wanted the skiing experience, took some lessons to adapt to the conditions and collectively had a blast. Not that surprising, really – we were on a ski trip with friends, and that never fails to feel right.
The snowy US had a howler the year before last

T he dream of every skier is to lay down a ripping great series of powder turns. And nowadays, fatter skis with big wide
noses plead to be taken out in the deep stuff, whispering: “How about keeping your weight centred, pressing gently and evenly as you move from ski to ski?”
You’ll spot here that David Odencrants is not leaning back to pop his tips out. In light powder you’ll be skiing below the surface of the snow, which seems disconcerting, but the top layers are so light they don’t have much effect – ignore them, gently press down on the outside ski and set yourself turning. At speed, you can feel where your tips are and tweak your fore and aft balance accordingly.
Keep your weight centred, look where you want to go and let your skis take you there. You won’t really accelerate down the fall-line because the snow will slow you down, so you’ll never feel out of control.
Powder skiing. These days it’s so easy it’s almost rude!
1 Find a flat area. 2 Practice skiing at walking speed, visualising where to plant your poles.3 Approach your chosen spot, poles out, hands on the top of the grips.4 Plant both poles at same time, on the side you want to spin.5 As your poles enter the snow, lean all your weight forward.
6 Keep everything strong and tensed. No crumpling!7 Once on the tips of your skis, spin in your chosen direction.8 Keep looking the way you want to rotate.9 At 180, pop off your skis and lift your poles at the same time.10 Finish the rest of the spin. Ride off looking smug!

Oh, Canada!East Coast, West Coast, even tiny Newfi e, Fall-Line’s Jonny Richards loves it all
BEST START with the biggie. And wherever you go in the world of skiing, there’s no escaping Whistler. The mega-resort boasts a stellar long-term snow record (with no
Canadian resort getting dumped on more), has a vast 8000-acres of trails, and boy, can they spend, splurging on goodies like the longest, highest and most expensively built gondola on earth. Oh, and they recently held a little event you may have heard of… the Olympics!
Given all the above, it’s no surprise that plenty see the billion-dollar ski behemoth as the fi nest resort in North America, if not the world. Now, we’d not go quite that far - having it amongst, rather than the best - but there’s no doubt it’s Canada’s headliner; and that’s in a seriously
strong line-up.Not everything is perfect. Like any big resort,
the base/main lifts can get busy at peak times in the morning, when everyone is desperate to get on the slopes. But it’s such an amazing hill (or rather two mountains, now Whistler’s linked to Blackcomb by the aforementioned Peak 2 Peak gondola) that you soon forget the niggles. And who can stay grumpy when you’ve got 200-plus trails to explore, with enough terrain to keep any standard of skier happy for weeks rather than the usual few days? Then there are the sorted snow parks, huge swathes of British Columbia’s backcountry… we could go on. Let’s just say, if you’ve not been, you’re missing out.
Just as celebrated, but rather more organic in creation, is Banff, 800km to the east in
neighbouring Alberta. One of the world’s best known ski spots, it’s tiny, thanks to fi erce national park building regulations. But what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in relaxed buzz and access to amazing slopes. All you need do is decide which burger joint is best (Bison Bistro gets our vote), and which of the three nearby resorts - Norquay, Sunshine or Lake Louise – you want to try fi rst.
Norquay is so close to the north-west, that you get a prime view from pretty much anywhere in the former rail-road town. It’s far from huge, with just four chair-lifts and 28 runs, but that can be a strength if there are learners in your group or you just fancy a mellow day’s hooning after the eight-hour fl ight from the UK into nearby Calgary.
Sunshine Village is an easy trip too - less than

15 minutes, and ten miles from Banff. Compared with Norquay, it’s a monster, boasting over 100 trails, excellent infrastructure/base and some of Canada’s best steeps. Plenty of the latter are packed into the Delirium Dive, an experts-only area, with transceiver, probe, shovel and partner all mandatory. The snow conditions were poor when we rode it, but it’s easy to see in even an average year that the options under Lookout Mountain would be brilliant; as rewarding as any we’ve skied in Europe. Plus it’s avalanche controlled, so relatively safe, and you can hire all the necessary backcountry gear; making it a really good off-piste introduction for decent skiers.
Lake Louise, surprisingly, is just as strong for those who like a bit of pow and pitch. And while it’s best known for holding a World Cup downhill on packed trails, the back bowls are what we love most about Canada’s friendliest ski spot. Head over the top of the 2672m Mount Whitehorn and you’ve got runs as tasty as any in North America. In good snow, a 15-minute hike opens up the North Cornice too, and with it the perfect compromise: fresh tracks, on steep, controlled, challenging terrain.
At 35 miles from Banff, it’s not quite as convenient as the other two resorts it shares an
overall pass (and 7500 acres of skiing) with, but it’s still under an hour’s journey and well served by ski bus. Just like Sunshine, it’s also rammed with excellent options for beginners and especially intermediates. We had a laugh blasting in the tracks of Cuche and co down to the traditional Canadian-style base (all pretty, low rise, wood), while under the south side’s
Grizzly Express gondola and Glacier Express quad, the likes of Eagle Meadows and Wiwaxy are perfect for improving, or learning to ride switch/carve on. The Larch area, with 600 acres of trees, is a cracker too. As good as any of Colorado’s best glades.
But we can’t really get all revved up about glades, and bowls, without mentioning Fernie and Panorama. The latter offers Canada’s best tree-skiing, yet somehow manages to be family-friendly too. And by mixing brilliant beginner trails, with super-gnarly stuff like the double black diamond, heavily wooded, Extreme Dream Zone they manage to keep everyone smiling. In many ways, it’s the perfect resort for a mixed group, with the better skiers able to pop into the trees edging the pistes for an adrenaline fi x, before joining up with everyone again on a fl owing blue or red further down the hill. And even if you don’t fancy skimming under the branches, the resort has America’s fi fth longest continuously skiable vertical, making it hooning heaven.
As for Fernie, well, you know all about that don’t you? And this former BC mining town is legendary for its powder and fi ve bowls, perfect for riding shin-deep fresh in. In terms of overall size it may not be able to match the biggest (with 2500 acres of terrain and 10 lifts) but boy are the hills beautifully constructed. And if we could only have one day of skiing, in one resort, this would be our pick.
Just like we said for Whistler, you should go. But the same could be said for Sunshine, Lake Louise, Norquay, Panorama, Fernie… and plenty we’ve not had space to mention here, with Revelstoke, Kicking Horse, Tremblant, Jasper, Stoneham, and even Newfoundland’s Marble Mountain all brilliant… That’s how good, and packed with skiing Canada is.

ASPEN, Breckenridge, Jackson, Copper Mountain, Steamboat, Squaw, Park City – the United States is packed with quality ski destinations. The sort of places
riders who know their stuff dream about visiting. Boy, do they get some snow too. And if you’re planning a trip, best bring your powder skirt, with US resorts snaffl ing the top eight places on the annual average snowfall list; each carding an incredible 12 metres-plus per annum. That’s as high as a three-storey house, and a third more than even Chamonix, the snowiest ski destination in Europe.
As to where you should head for from the above list – and other crackers we couldn’t quite shoehorn in like Vail and Winter Park - depends on what you’re after.
The easiest category to get defi nitive with is steeps. Not for everyone, we know. But if you love vert, and snow sluffi ng past as soon as you bang in the fi rst jump turn, it has to be
Jackson Hole (run a close second by Squaw Valley’s 4000 acres of chutes, bowls and mega tough-stuff like the Palisades).
The Wyoming terrain, both on and off-piste, is legendary. And well worthy of its status. Plus they’ve pumped a ton of money into infrastructure recently too, without - so far, anyway - losing the wildness, and feeling of adventure, that makes the place so special. The downside is that this part of America is a ball-ache to get to, with no direct UK fl ights. But if you’re an experienced skier, and want a real challenge, it’s more than worth the hassle.
If you’re not quite that handy, but love the idea of freeriding and/or getting some air, you’d be better at somewhere like Copper Mountain. The Colorado resort built the world’s fi rst – and still best – indoor freestyle facility, Woodward, a few years ago. And a morning or two fl ying off the snowfl ex kickers into the foam pit, will have you well on the way to spins; or at least solid grabs.
If getting away from parks and pistes is more your thing, over the back of the regular 125 trails, and huge half-pipe (again, they run excellent learner clinics) is Tucker Mountain. Ride to the bottom of this series of bowls and there’s a free cat service. (We know, we didn’t quite dare believe it either, until in the cab, rattling uphill.) And because you’re so close to traditional marked-trails, and lifts, it’s perfect for backcountry beginners. While hike an extra 30 minutes from the drop-off and experienced shredders can access a load more descents (with The Taco area our favourite).
Also in Colorado, Aspen Highlands can’t quite match Copper Mountain’s free cat, but again, has fantastic off-piste that’s inbounds. The resort’s other three hills are tasty too. Aspen mountain has masses of terrain and great tree runs, Snowmass is even bigger with the lion’s share of the quartet’s combined 300-plus trails, while Buttermilk is brilliant for beginners with a park good enough to annually host the X Games.
American dreamsDesperate for pow? You’ve come to the right place says Fall-Line’s Jonny Richards
THE RESORTSThe United States is packed with fantastic ski destinations. Powder, steeps, miles of perfectly groomed pistes, glade runs, amazing parks - they’ve got it all. In huge amounts! Here are some of Fall-Line’s favourites.

Breckenridge has fi ve parks and 25-acres of kickers, rails and tabletops
And we can’t talk about freestyle in the Rockies, without give a plug to Breckenridge’s fi ve parks and 25-acres of kickers, rails and tabletops. The place is not all about jibbing – we love Peak 10’s blacks and the off-piste chutes and bowls above Peak 7 and 8 – but only Utah’s Park City comes close if you love a trick.
Finally, fi nishing off the Fall-Line selection box, comes bumps and glades. The former is easy. Winter Park. No place we’ve ever skied on earth has more moguls. It’s not just basket-of-eggs stuff, but let’s just say, your technique will be dialled by the end of the week. It’s maddening at times, and constantly testing, particularly around the Mary Jane area, but we loved it. Even on a snowboard.
As for tree-skiing, that’s a tougher call. If we had more time here, we’d give a proper review of
Utah’s 14 resorts, all clustered around Salt Lake. As it is, we’ll just have to stick to saying that the Canyons is world class for glades, with Park City not far behind.
For our favourite though, we’re back to Colorado. We know, we know, there’s lots of it here, but access is easy (via Denver) and there’s a huge amount of terrain compared to pretty much any other US ski state. And while Steamboat is not quite as large as some (with 165 trails and 20 lifts), cut through the wooded-areas under Sunshine Peak and the pitch is perfect, the snow usually shin-deep and the options seemingly endless.
And that last sentence sums up skiing in the United States. Plenty of powder. Plenty of amazing trails. You just need to decide which from all the fantastic resorts to visit fi rst.
THE RESORTSThe juicy destinations continue, with options for every type of skier, and shredder...
