CURAÇAOKINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS

Originally inhabited by the Arawak Indians,Curaçao was settled by the Spanish in 1499and was later colonized by the Dutch. Thecapital city, Willemstad, has the look andfeel of a tiny tropical Amsterdam, with colorfully painted buildings, magnificentred-tiled-roof houses, airy churches andflourishing docks. ST. MAARTENKINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS

St. Maarten is the Dutch side of an islandshared by France and the Netherlands. Thisis the smallest piece of land in the worldthat has dual sovereignty. On the island apeaceful coexistence is shared, with a bor-der that seems invisible. Its cosmopolitancapital, Philipsburg, boasts a myriad ofshopping opportuni-ties, while the outlyingarea features breath-taking scenery and historic sights, such as buildings with theunique West Indian“gingerbread” trim.Nature lovers might wish to scuba dive inthe coral reefs teeming with marine life or take an invigorating hike throughwindswept hills. Visit the French side of the island to fully experience its culturaland scenic differences.

In the early 1900s, Miami was nicknamed the Magic City because it seemed to havesprung into a metropolis from the beaches of Biscayne Bay. Today, this glitzy urban play-ground is also regarded as the Gateway toLatin America.

ST. THOMASU.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

The most developed of the U.S. Virgin Islands,St. Thomas is often referred to as Rock City, because of its prominent mountain. The maintown, Charlotte Amalie, is the capital of theU.S. V.I. and is renowned for its tax-free shopping. The town’s architecture reflectsthe island’s diverse heritage with Dutchdoors, Danish red-tile roofs, French iron grillwork and Spanish-style patios. Filigreebalconies and brightly painted houses give the city the feel of the New Orleans FrenchQuarter. The island’s white sand beaches arefamous for calm, turquoise waters and areembraced by gently rolling emerald hills.

Sixteenth-century Spanish explorershoped to find a shortcut from theAtlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean via acanal at the Isthmus of Panama. Balboa con-ceived the possibility in 1513, but the prospect of sculpting such awaterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps unsuccessfully attempted to build acanal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption andthe jungle took their toll. An estimated 16,000-20,000 workers died.

By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once thetreaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested thestrength and intelligence of more than 35,000 men.

Col. George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps ofEngineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed.Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatenedlives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Col. WilliamGorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow feverand reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague.

The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel calledthe “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet. To this day, it remains a remarkable engineering feat.

In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canalownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999.

This narrow ribbon of bright water cutting through distant greenhills is an enduring marvel. Traversing the canal—feeling the ship riseand descend as the locks are opened and shut while cruising throughthe narrow passage—is an unforgettable experience!
