Rumor: I’ve heard that our deployment schedule may shorten due to other ships’ schedules and current operations. Is this true?

Answer: We have no indication that our deployment length has changed, and it would be highly unlikely that our deployment would be shortened.

Cruise books: cherished memories for you and your family

USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – For many Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the ship’s 21st deployment is their first, and with every aircraft carrier’s cruise comes a ‘cruise book’ of memories. Cruise books are a naval tradition reaching as far back as World War II, offering Sailors a great way to reflect on their experiences and remember their younger days. “Cruise books are kind of like a high school yearbook – years down the road it gives you a great way to look back and remember the people you knew and the things you did,” said Victor Rodriguez, head photographer of the Gloucester, VA based Bluewater Publishing, the company in charge of producing Enterprise’s 2011 book. Cruise books are also a great way for Sailors to show their loved ones where they went and who they deployed with. These albums will be prized possessions for the rest of Sailors’ lives. Too often, Sailors that don’t buy one end up regretting that decision years later. “Sailors bring them

home and show their family and friends, and it gives them a way to visually explain some of the things they went through and did,” said Rodriguez. “You’d be surprised how many memories you have in your mind that will be recalled when you see it in a cruise book. It’s a way to relive some of the most memorable experiences of your life.” Rodriguez said cruise books can also be a great way to look into the past, and see how different things used to be. “Media Department has kept just about every cruise book since Enterprise’s commissioning. It’s interesting to look at the ones from the 70’s and 80’s. It’s like a window into the past, right in front of you,” said Mass Communication Specialist (SW/AW) 1st Class Isaiah Sellers, Media Department’s production leading petty officer. With so many benefits to ordering a cruise book, the ship’s Fun Boss, Brooke Newton, said she would like to remind Sailors that they can order today. “Sailors can come by the MWR ticket window and pay with their Navy Cash card, and if they

want they can have their names embossed on the cover,” said Newton. Newton also reminds Sailors that using their real full name is required, and no nick names or call signs will be accepted. Cruise books provide Sailors with a way to keep their memories from their deployment aboard Enterprise. Whether this will be the only

deployment memory from a Sailor’s time in the Navy, or just part of a large collection of cruise books throughout their careers, buying the Big ‘E’s 21st deployment cruise book is an opportunity for Sailors to let friends and family back home know about the experiences they had while embarked on a historic cruise.
