cruising the waters around patmos
TRANSCRIPT
A Fascinating HistoryPatmos is steeped in a fascinating history and myths abound with legends being part of
the island’s heritage and culture. Alexios Comnenos, the Byzantine emperor gave the island to monks who built the impressive Monastery of St John which to this present day
dominates the island. Today, the monastery houses an important library which houses ancient manuscripts
Gorgeous Coves and BaysSailors are spoilt for choice when it comes the number of delightful coves and lovely bays
around the coastline where it is safe to drop anchor. One such bay is Aspri which is a little to the north of Skala and which is quite well sheltered from the winds when they blow. It's a great
place to drop anchor away from the hustle and bustle of the island's main harbour with the added bonus being that it's within easy reach of the town.
The downside is there's only room for two yachts and being so popular, space is at a premium on a lovely sunny day. In short, it’s best to get there very early or very late in the evening.Another bay which is also quite well sheltered from the meltimi and which is close to Skala, is Agriolivadho. With a sandy bottom, it's one of the easier bays to drop anchor without the risk of it dragging. Kambos Bay which is to the north east of Agriolivadho is another nice bay that boasts having a few tavernas along the beach. However, it's not so easy getting an anchor to hold unless you find a patch of sand amongst all the weeds.
Great Snorkelling
Vagia is one of the prettiest coves and it's a great place to snorkel. The waters are crystal clear which makes swimming and snorkelling a really pleasant experience and is one of
the reasons why it can be hard to find any space in this delightful, albeit small cove on a busy day.
Secluded Bays and Coves Around Every Corner
The lovely part about sailing around Patmos, is that you'll find a secluded bay or cove around every corner. Livadhi Geranou is just one of the many that tempts sailors to drop
anchor and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and gorgeous scenery.
Popular Coves
Livadhi Kaloyiron is a very popular cove that's favoured by local fishermen and although more exposed to the wind, it offers good anchorage. The cove is delightful, but it's the surrounding landscape that's really gorgeous and which draws visiting yachts in
Exploring Skala
Skala is a bustling vibrant harbour with cruise ships arriving and departing regularly throughout the day. The Old Town is a definite place to explore, but it’s best to do this
in the evening when the temperature is a lot cooler than during the heat of the day.
LastlyExploring Patmos by yacht offers you the chance to visit an exquisite island in a very
unique way.
You get to discover little corners of paradise along the coastline that offer safe anchorages and which are sheltered from the winds when they decide to blow. Charting a course through
the Greek islands on a sailing holiday has to include visiting this delightful island so you get to sample all it has to offer.
