Carnival cancels TriumphCARNIVAL Cruise Lines has cancelled all
Carnival Triumph departures from now until 13
April, in the aftermath of an engine fire which
in turn resulted in what is being dubbed the
cruise from hell.
The ship lost propulsion and most of its
onboard power on 10 February whilst sailing
on a four-day cruise in the Gulf of Mexico,
leaving guests without working toilets and
forcing the cruise line to rely on food drop-offs
from other ships to feed the hungry hoards.
According to guest reports, some passengerseven ended up sleeping outdoors on the ships
deck to avoid the smell and sickness pervading
the vessel.
The four night cruise, which departed
Galvestone on 07 Feb, was initially due sail
around the Gulf of Mexico before returning to
Galvestone, however the four night holiday,
turned into a seven-night ordeal, as tow boats
were enlisted to pull Triumph into the port of
Mobile in Alabama.
To add insult to injury, whilst towing the ship,
one of the towlines broke and had to be
reattached, adding further delays.Passengers who suffered through the voyage
have been given a full refund, had their
onboard expense account tab covered by the
company (excepting gift shop and art
purchases, and casino charges), and have been
given US$500, and a future cruise credit to the
value of the amount paid for their fare.
Guests transportation post cruise was also
covered by the cruise line.
In terms of cancellations, Triumph has
dropped a total of 14 four- and five-day
voyages, scheduled to depart Galvestone
between 11 February and 13 April.Guests booked on the affected cruises will
receive a full fare refund, as well as non-
refundable transport costs, pre-paid shore
excursions, gratuities and Government fees
and charges.
The guests will also receive a 25% discount
on a future three- to five-day Carnival cruise,
or a 15% discount on a six- to seven-day voyage.
Australians should prepare
themselves for the latest word
n river cruising, Riva
Waterways.THE brainchild of Australian-owned Scenic
Tours, Riva Waterways cruise product will be
exclusively chartered to Scenics sister
ompany Evergreen Tours for voyages on the
Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers, as well asome voyages through Basel on the Moselle
River.
Our 2013 European river cruising program
was a sell out and we saw a hole in the
market, Evergreen Tours General Manager
Angus Crichton told Cruise Weekly.
There is clear consumer demand for this
ype of product and these ships will truly be
outstanding, he added.
Having spotted this gap, river cruise pioneer
and Scenic Tours Founder Glen Moroney,
decided to fill it through the creation of Riva
Waterways, and construction has commencedon the company's first two sister ships, Riva
Royale and Riva Princess at the De Hoop
hipyard in the Netherlands (also used to build
Scenic Gem).
When complete, each of the ships will
measure 135 metres, feature 91 cabins and
have capacity to host a total of 180
passengers.
More than 30 million has been invested to
ensure these innovative ships wow guests.
Crichton told CWthat the Riva Royale and
Riva Princess will each debut a revolutionary
mid-level 6x4m pool with a bar, located at theear of the ships, that by night will convert to a
inema with seating for over 30 people.
Crichton also said that these brand new
vessels will offer superior inclusions and on
board comfort, and greater value than those
offered by competitors.
Getting down to the nitty-gritty of what
nclusions guests can expect Crichton told CW
that cruisers will enjoy guided excursions in
ports of call and wine and beer with dinner
every night.
The other unique feature is that Evergreen
Tours is the only operator who can link a wide
range of exciting land tours with our cruises,
Crichton said.
With the Riva Royale set to launch at the end
of April 2014 and the Riva Princess due to
launch mid May 2014, Evergreen Tours will no
longer need to charter their river vessels fromother companies.
Evergreen Tours 2014 European river cruising
and escorted touring programs are on sale
now, and guests who have already pre-
registered for the season can expect to be
upgraded to the Riva ships.
Meanwhile the company has also released a
special Earlybird offer for guests who book by
28 March 2013, whereby they will secure 2014
voyages at 2013 prices.
Earlybirds can also benefit from a Fly Free
offer as well as the exclusive bonus of $250
onboard credit. For more information, visit your Evergreen

Changes ahead for luxury cruising2013 is predicted to be a big yearfor small ships, adventure
expeditions and Northern Europe.
THE world's highest rated cruise lines have
emerged from a challenging period to see
stronger demand from consumers.
Karen Christensen, Silversea's GM Australasia,
told CWWe are definitely experiencing an
increase in guests wanting a truly memorable stay
but with greater expectations of value for money.
Guests will be looking for those additionalluxurious touches thrown in along the way, like
personal butler service for every suite and
stocked mini-bars with guests' preferred
tipple.
Christensen also believes Silversea's all-
inclusive offer will appeal to a wider range of
travellers.
With the increased popularity of adventure
travel, we expect this level of luxury to be a
huge attraction for potential clients looking for
an expedition cruise experience, she said.
Seabourn's Director of Sales, Tony Archbold,
tipped Antarctica to be very hot this year. There's a lot of excitement about Seabourn
Quest's Antarctica debut in November, he said.
Our recent fleet expansion has seen us
introduce an array of new cruises, and
northern Europe is another region that's
proving popular as a result - I think we'll see a
lot of Australian passengers sailing the waters
of the Baltic and Scandinavia this year.
Jackie Foggitt, who represents Sea Cloud Cruises
in Australia, also selected Northern Europe as
very popular for the Australian market.
Julie Denovan, Director Business Development
Australia & New Zealand, SeaDream YachtClub, noted that early bookings were booming
for its new itineraries in Asia and Australia, as
well as a 2014 return to London and the Baltic,
on its 100-passenger megayachts.
SeaDream is seeing more small groups of
friends and family, often celebrating a special
occasion, she added.
Meanwhile, Hapag-Lloyd is seeking a more
international mix for its new all-balconies ship
launching this year.
Europa 2 will be positioned as the modern,
lifestyle-orientated sister ship to the world's
only five-star-plus ship, the MS Europa, and
will cater to a sophisticated and cosmopolitan
audience, said Gerd Wilmer, the company's
Australian representative.
Andy Lovering, Director of Sales and Marketing,
Star Clippers, forecast a fair wind and following
seas for its luxury/adventure clipper ship niche,
with 45% repeat guests.

A pair of holidaying daredevils in
Jiaozuo, in Chinas Henan province, have
caused a stir after they were
photographed riding on top of a cable car
3,000-feet above a mountain precipice.
The duo got to the top of the car after
climbing out of its door and maneuvering
up, just a few minutes after it started its
mountain descent.
They were snapped eating snacks,
chatting and dangling their legs over the
edge by passengers in cars behind them.
Although the duo did not get caught,
park officials have since warned against
copycat stunts, saying
the daredevils were
lucky not to have had
anything happen, as
the cars usually jerk
and sway due to the wind and mechanics.

P&O Cruises encourages mini-SpielbergsTHE key to the success of a cruise line is notust the variation and excitement available in
he ports they visit, but also in the
kind of entertainment made available
o its passengers while at sea.
P&O Cruises Australia last week fired
a massive offensive in the ongoing
battle for the lucrative families market,
unveiling an amazing new onboard
kids film-making activity - Broad
Shorts.
The concept has been brought to life
hrough a partnership between theruise line, Sony and claymation film-
making company Stop Motion Pro,
who played key roles in the making of
he family favourites Wallace & Gromitand
Pirates claymation movies.
Carnival Australia Vice President of Hotel
Operations Sture Myrmell said the Broad
Shorts program was a first of its kind in the
Australian cruise market.
Our new activities like Broad Shorts are
designed to stimulate kids and leave them
eeling like they not only had a great holiday
with P&O Cruises, but that they also had somegreat new experiences, he said.
Broad Shorts aims to bring the concept of
top-motion short film making to the range of
hildrens activities available onboard a P&O
cruise, allowing kids to build, design, produce
and record whatever their imaginations can
create using clay figurines.
Initially being rolled out to 11-17 year olds,
the Broad Shorts program sees kids having the
option of using pre-made clay figures, or designing
their own from a wide variety of pieces and
putting them on camera, using the Stop Motion
software to bring their characters to life.
The program is included in the cost of cruise
and if it proves to be a hit, will be made
available to cruisers of even younger ages.Three stations consisting of a Sony laptop,
camera and film sets will be available during
scheduled activity sessions, with groups of
three or four children and teens working, fully
supervised, on their project in different stages.
Completed projects will then be screened to
parents in a special session towards the end of
the voyage, with kids then able to take their
movie home on DVD.
A second phase of the program, to be
launched later this year, will see teenagers
provided with access to individually-filmed
content from around the ship which they canincorporate into their films.

Cape Horn: the end of the worldby: Louise Goldsbury
Adventure ship Stella Australis Monument at the summit Rounding the stormy Horn
On the bucket list of any die-hard cruiser is the opportunity to round
Cape Horn, the furthest tip of South America.
Part of the allure is the notorious history of these dangerous waters,
known as the sailors' graveyard.
As the northern border of the Drake Passage, the Horn has claimed
the lives of 10,000 men in more than 800 shipwrecks.
Little more than a century ago, this shipping route, between the
Pacific and Atlantic oceans, was vital to the world's trade.
But the construction of the Panama Canal 100 years ago hasrelegated the experience to extreme yachtsmen and cruise
passengers, albeit in a much safer way.
The MV Stella Australis steers clear of trouble and its scheduled
landing at Cape Horn National Park is 'weather permitting'.
On my voyage, we are fortunate to have calm seas and blue sky, but
conditions are still blustery enough to feel a sense of achievement.
Taking zodiac boats to the shore, we are amazed to see the crew
standing in the freezing water, complete with wetsuits, which sets the
appropriate adventurous tone.
Assisting with a precarious disembarkation, they help 100
passengers first step foot on 'the end of the world'.
We climb up the hill to reach the summit, where an albatross-
shaped monument honours the sailors lost at sea.A couple of hours is enough to see the Chilean Navy station,
manned by one man and his family, and its lighthouse and chapel.
Grinning passengers are thrilled to have made it.
Glaciers and penguins
If a landing is not possible at Cape Horn, the cruise offers more than
enough other highlights: glaciers, penguins, dolphins, beaver dams,
the Strait of Magellan, lectures about the native Yamana people,
known to Europeans as the Giants of Patagonia, and the history of
Charles Darwin's expedition on the HMS Beagle.
The natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego is worth the journey in itself.
Guided tours include an easy walk around the sub-polar forest to
view the Marinelli Glacier and unusual flora.
The next day, we hike to the huge Pia Glacier and then spend the
afternoon sailing through Glacier Alley, as amazing as the name
suggests. On a rainy morning, the zodiacs take us to see a colony of Magellan
penguins and cormorants.
It's almost like Antarctica (if you've never been to Antarctica)
without having to spend two days crossing the Drake.
