    CDU Update

    Is Asia Australia’s

next source market?THE 2015 Cruise Down Underconference, which takes place nextweek in Darwin, will be the platformfor a number of critical discussions

around the future of the cruise

industry, one of which is whetherAsia will be our next major source

    market.Star Cruises announced recently

that it was returning to theAustralian market for the rst

time in 10 years (CW  26 May) withSuperStar Virgo embarking on a48-day round trip from Hong Kongin November calling at more than

20 ports. The itinerary will visit veAustralian states and showcase theWA ports of Geraldton, Fremantle

and Albany plus key cities includingMelbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

SuperStar Virgo will carry up to2,500 passengers, all visiting from

Asian markets. If the itinerary issuccessful, it’s likely more cruiselines will follow. Indeed Norwegian

Cruise Lines is already planninga return to Asia in December2016 and onto Australia and NewZealand from January 2017.

As an industry we are getting abetter understanding of what theAsian traveller is looking for whenthey come to Australia, but how

is this dierent for cruisers? AreAsian cruisers big spenders? Whatshore excursions do they enjoy? Are

they water lovers? What culturalexperiences are they looking for?

These, and many more questions, will be put to CDU Conference

speakers including MichaelHackman from Star Cruises, andAsian expert Dwain Wall.

    P O R T H O L E

CRUISE ship operators havegained signicant insight intothe scourge of the dreadednorovirus, via a research projectin the US where scientistscreated a “vomit machine”.

The totally gross device(pictured) aims to answer thequestion of what happens to the

virus which has caused so muchgastrointestinal drama on someill-fated voyages.

    Norovirus is notorious

for spreading like wildre, particularly in closedenvironments such as cruiseships - but it’s not exactly clearhow it spreads, with speculationthat it is “aerosolised” when asuerer blows chunks.

The scientists from NorthCarolina State and Wake ForestUniversities in the US useda range of “vomit metrics”(perhaps including the fact thatit ALWAYS contains carrots),which allowed them to controlthe “volume, viscosity andpressure of the simulatedvomiting incidents”.

They found norovirus denitelydoes have the potential to becarried as an invisible mist byair currents and thus to travel“many metres and land on manysurfaces at infectious levels” -so make sure your clients keeptheir hands to themselves!

    Do you have the

    Cruise Weekly app?

    p&o’s Pacifc Jewel  unveiled

its new look on Tue, with its rst

    passengers embarking to view the

    much-ancipated Pantry.

    The 245m ship recently returned

from dry dock in Singapore and is

the rst P&O vessel to roll out the

    new dining concept.

“It’s me to banish the buet

    and really introduce a casual

dining concept that you feellike you really want to dine in”

    said Bre Annable, P&O Cruises

    entertainment director.

    The Pantry is an internaonal

    food market, where guests

    can choose from eight outlets,

    oering cuisine ranging from sh

and chips, burgers, Asian and the

    most popular so far, Mexican.

    “The concept is not about

    grabbing that tray and moving

    along and pung everything

on your plate and geng onechance at it.... you might try some

Mexican for entrée and then go

back and have some curry or you

might then go and have some sh

and chips and some desserts from

    the sugar bar,” Annable said.

The concept will be on P&O’s

new addions arriving later in the

year, Pacifc Eden and Pacifc Aria,

and will then be rolled out onto

the rest of the ve-ship eet.

Guests on Tue also had a sneakpreview of the latest producon

    show, “O the Charts” (lw)

    and P&O’s latest onboard evening

    entertainment concept, the

    Gatsby Party ( 1).

The ship is also the rst to

introduce a Pandora store at Sea.

    Pantry showcase are Ewe Sefel,
