7 NIGHT ‘SPRINGTIME ON THE MOSELLE’ ULTIMATE RIVER CRUISE ■ 28 APRIL - 5 MAY 2011

Another first for Cruise In! An exclusive seven night charter on the brilliant 4-star MPS Statendam at prices you wouldn’t believe! As one of the largest vessels cruising the Rhine and Moselle with a capacity of 186 berths, we have waited over two years to get back on this ship, a favourite with many of our friends who remember so vividly our Basle to Dusseldorf cruise and our terrific Christmas Market

charters. ‘Springtime on the Moselle’ promises to be a wonderful cruise visiting many of the small towns and villages along the banks of the river as well as stops along the Rhine. Some of us have already experienced the beauty of Cochem, Beilstein, Traben Trabach and Bernkastel from our cruise in 2009 on the Heinrich Heine. The scenery is stunning. Every stop offers a different view of the meandering river. As a wine growing valley there is a chance to sample many different wines from the region. We hope that our weather will be good to go with the light nights. Above all, the companionship of all the Cruise In friends and clients always adds to the ambiance of eight wonderful days. Both Rose and I can’t wait to greet you on this one-off special charter!

Day 1 Cologne, Germany

Travel by your chosen route to Cologne in time for late afternoon embarkation. Our coaches will remain with us for the whole of the cruise, offering a variety of optional excursions for various villages on the rivers Rhine and Moselle. This evening we will have a leisurely buffet dinner enabling you to relax after your journey from the UK. After dinner enjoy a stroll around the Cathedral and market place.

Day 2Königswinter and Andernach

An early start, if not for the passengers certainly the crew and the ship as we leave Cologne and head for our first stop at Köningswinter, a charming summer resort town situated on the right bank of the Rhine. The town is opposite Bonn, at the foot of the Siebengebirge, the famous 'seven mountains', a range of hills east of the Rhine. After our morning stop in Köningswinter we travel on to Andernach. This is another charming town. All the towns we'll visit are charming. That's why we're going. If your German is a bit rusty, don't worry, Andernach has its own local dialect. It also has its own coat of arms, lots of medieval fortifications, such as the 183 feet tall 'Round Tower', and a must-see 16th century tread-wheel tower crane, 29 feet in diameter, 31 feet high.

Day 3Cochem and Beilstein

Another early start for the crew as we leave for Cochem. This is a fascinating sail, especially if you're interested in locks. There are three en route: Koblenz, Lehmen and Müden. Locks may be interesting but nothing compares with Cochem. It's one of our absolute favourite stops, with its feudal fairy-tale castle, the Reichsburg, set on a hill, surrounded by vineyards, overlooking the river. We tear ourselves away from Cochem in the evening to sail to Beilstein. We overnight in Beilstein, overlooked by the romantic ruins of Metternich Castle, in one of Europe's loveliest stretches of landscape. Don't miss an after dinner walk around this delightful village.

Andernach to Cochem 05.00 - 12.10 Via Koblenz, Lehmen and Müden locks Cochem to Beilstein 18.30 - 20.30 Via Fankel lock

Day 4 Traben-Trarbach

An hour more in bed for the crew this morning as we head for Traben-Trarbach. The countryside here, in what's called the Middle Moselle, is just gorgeous. The river meanders, looping and swooping through wooded hill sides as if it hasn't a care in the world and doesn't care who knows it. Traben-Trarbach once was two towns - they joined together back in 1904. Traben, which stretches in a broad strip along the river, is on the Moselle’s left bank at the foot of the former fort, Mont Royal. Traben certainly gets its priorities right. This is wine-growing country and there'll be the chance to sample so many! It even has its own 'wine railway', the Moselwein-Bahn. The original station building, built on the model of old timber-frame houses, is still standing.

Beilstein to Traben-Trarbach 06.00 - 12.30 Via Aldegund and Enkirch locks

Day 5Bernkastel and Zell

Leaving Traben-Trarbach we head to Bernkastel, the town of which it has been said, the word picturesque was created to describe. The architecture is straight out of Hans Christian Anderson. There are gabled half-timbered houses, pointy-headed roof lines, and a colourful medieval market place that is just heaven for anyone who loves medieval market places. You expect to see Hansel and Gretel wherever you look. Especially if you've wine taken, which you may have as we'll be there up to lunch time. Then we're off again back through, first the Zeltingen, and then the Enkirch lock, onwards to Zell. Mention Zell to a wine buff and the words 'white Riesling' will light up in their eyes.

Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel 06.00 - 09.30 Via Zeltingen lock Bernkastel to Zell 13.00 - 16.30 Via Zeltingen and Enkirch locks

Day 6Alken and Winningen

As the famous song line has it, 'oozing charm from every pore', Alken sports a number of old houses and the remains of medieval walls. The sharp-eyed among you may find yourself wondering if the castle above the town is the only twin-towered example along the Moselle. You'd be right. The Burg Thurant, built around 1200, with much later alteration, is just that. It was constructed, so the history books tell us, on the site of a Roman fort by the brother of King Otto IV. Mind you, he probably didn't build it all on his own, being a prince and all. He probably had help. But onwards and upwards. Come evening we're off again, this time to Winningen.

Day 7Koblenz and Bonn

Having overnighted in Winningen you may have already found out what a brilliant place it is. If not, here's what you missed. More charm, more half-timbered houses, a spectacular bridge, and lots and lots of witches. Or so they say. In the 17th century, the area was notorious for its witch hunts. You don't have to hunt for them these days. They're everywhere, as tourist trinkets, wood carvings, souvenir dolls, fountains. Every which way you look there are witches. But now it's on to the 2000-year-old town of Koblenz, Germany's most beautiful 'corner'. History, you want history? Koblenz is full to bursting with history, with cultural monuments and historic buildings, tiny lanes and narrow alleyways, romantic open squares and river walks, plus an optional tour to Stolzenfels Castle.

Winningen to Koblenz 07.00 - 09.00 Koblenz to Bonn 18.00 - 21.00 Via Koblenz lock

Day 8Disembarkation at Cologne

How come, with the river flowing so slowly, that time passes so quickly? It seems like only yesterday we were in Cologne and here we are heading back there again to disembark. All good things come to an end. Soon it’s time to say good-bye to Frans and the wonderful staff and crew onboard MPS Statendam after we’ve enjoyed our final breakfast together.
