The Jurisdiction of Saint-EmilionWithin easy distance by bus, passengers can explore the medieval village and surrounding chateaux of Saint-Emilion, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 for its historic vineyard landscape.

The Gironde EstuaryRich in treasures such as the remains of the region’s third UNESCO classified site: the Citadel de Blaye was built as a fortress by Vauban, Louis XIV’s military architect. Facing Le Verdon, the Cordouan lighthouse at the mouth of the Gironde estuary is the oldest one. It was classified as historical monument in 1862 together with the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris.

The Médoc Wine RouteThe famous “Chateaux Road” winds the visitors through most of the revered names of the Médoc - from Chateau Margaux to Chateau Mouton Rothschild offering the chance to explore the secrets of wine-making and wine-tasting in this most iconic of regions, and to understand the personalities and the politics that have shaped Bordeaux.

BordeauxThe Atlantic gem

Bordeaux offers a rare ability to accommodate all size and types of ships on one of its four key berthing locations

Bordeaux is ideal for small to medium sized boats, ideally up to around 255 meters in length. And as soon as you step off the boat, you are in the heart of the city.

Bassens is perfect for medium-sized craft up to 255 meters in length, 15 minutes from Bordeaux center via the brand new Chaban Delmas bridge, and on the way to the vineyards of Cognac or Saint-Emilion.

The biggest ships are best served by Le Verdon, from where the most prestigious chateaux of the Médoc are just 30 minutes away, while the city center of Bordeaux is a short 90 minutes by coach.

A fourth smaller berth is also available in the town of Pauillac in the Médoc, for smaller specialized crafts.

Central BordeauxBordeaux has the immense advantage of a city center berthing that allows passengers to easily discover the charm of the town. Your crew can also take advantage of this proximity to the shops. Getting around is easy with the modern designed tramway which runs all along the quays, plus there is an attractive car-free old town, full of cobbled streets and pavement cafés. Taxis are also available for longer explorations.

MuseumsIf they want to stay within easy reach of the ship, Bordeaux has a rich and varied number of museums and art galleries that are both dynamic and inspiring. From the exciting CAPC Contemporary Art Museum to the classic calm of the Musée d’Aquitaine, this is a town that is rich in treasures.

Wine classesBefore heading out to the vineyards, the Bordeaux Wine School offers a range of short classes. A 90 minute class that is held in the wine bar of the flat-iron Bordeaux Wine Bureau building will leave your passengers confident enough to take on any chateaux owner.

Health and WellnessA little further afield but worth it for the glamour, the famous Wine Therapy spa, in Pessac Léognan, is just 25 minutes from Bordeaux.

GolfYour passengers may also enjoy a round at the Golf du Médoc: with two 18-hole courses, one of which has been selected for the French Open, plus tuition for all levels, a fully equipped driving range.

ThePerfectBlend City and VineyardAn example of a day tour: Explore the treasure of a UNESCO city and its world famous wines

The tour will start with a panoramic drive of Bordeaux: The WWII German submarine base, the Chartrons river front where the wine trade started, the ‘Esplanade des Quinconces’, one of Europe’s largest squares (12 hectares) and the 18th century ‘Place de la Bourse’. Architecture can be followed through history from the 13th century Cathedral of St André, up to the 18th century Grand Théâtre built in 1773.

Passengers will then be transferred to nearby vineyards South of Bordeaux. They will stop at prestigious estates to visit their cellars and enjoy a wine tasting.

After lunch, the tour of the Médoc will start just north of the city, and follow the magnificent Médoc wine road, located between the Gironde estuary and the Landes forest.

Passengers will have the opportunity to drive through the world famous names of Saint Estèphe, Pauillac or Margaux and to visit the cellars of renowned chateaux where the techniques of wine making will be explained during the visit, followed by a wine tasting.

A Taste of WineInsider’s Saint-EmilionAn example of a half day tour: A taste of Saint-Emilion, a once-in-a-lifetime experience in and over Saint-Emilion district

Departing the pier aboard your air-conditioned vehicle, enjoy the approximately 45-minute journey to the launch site, located near the village of Saint-Emilion. Anticipating your memorable adventure, you might wish to roll up your sleeves and assist in the preparation of your flight, which will include the filling of your hot air balloon.

With preparations made and the winds checked, step aboard and gently lift off as your balloon makes its slow, quiet ascent. From this unique vantage point, you will be mesmerized by views of the countryside and lush vineyards unfolding below. The whole Saint-Emilion region is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to winemaking traditions and superb medieval architecture preserved through the centuries. Soon, your expert pilot will guide the balloon back to solid terrain, where snacks and Champagne will be served.

Afterward, return to your vehicle and enjoy the short transfer through the heartland of the Merlot grape and up the vine-covered “hill with a thousand châteaux” to the town of Saint-Emilion. Pass 13th century city walls and a moat carved out of solid rock as you enter this remarkable city. Here, view the Collegiale Church with its magnificent 12th century cloister and ramparts. Browse the bustling marketplace before exploring the underground church. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, this house of God is unique in Europe for its size and tremendous transformation from natural caves into a monolithic hermitage. As you continue to stroll through Saint-Emilion’s winding streets, your guide will point out the Cadene Gate and the King’s Tower before providing you with time to independently browse through the local boutiques, and then rejoin your vehicle for the return trip to your ship.
