Cruise Bordeaux Maximise Your PotentialBordeaux, the capital of Southwest France, has changed beyond all recognition in recent years, and is today an unmissable stop on the Atlantic coast, ready to provide you with unparalleled service and an unforgettable experience. Bordeaux is an internationally known name, instantly associated with great wine, great food, great living. In 2007, the city’s “Port of the Moon” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the largest urban area ever to receive this acclaim.

Cruise ships have a long history of being welcomed here in one of the four berthing sites (Bordeaux City Center, Bassens, Pauillac, Le Verdon). A typical year sees around 40 ships enjoy the region’s hospitality and unique experiences in the vineyards around.

In Bordeaux, new technical installations are available, right in the center of the city, facilitating the arrival of cruise ships and ensuring that the welcome of the technical team, crew and passengers is seamless and efficient. During the call, all activities and excursions are designed with the dual intention of providing lasting memories for your passengers, and healthy margins that allow you to operate successfully over the long term. The harbour is within easy walking distance of the 18th century historical old town, and offers excellent security for your staff and passengers. It is one of a handful of destinations worldwide that can offer this convenience, this heritage, and this allure.

Bordeaux,A UNESCO World Heritage City“When we first came, we drove around all the vineyards in the area and really found it most enjoyable, so we come back

here to visit. It‘s a very pleasant city, classified by UNESCO, very beautiful, close to the sea; it offers all you need for a great

call...” An American passenger calling in Bordeaux on the Crystal Symphony

Bordeaux: An Unforgettable MixUNESCO World Heritage city, a city center port, world famous vineyards, world-beating wines. The downtown area with its quays and historical old town center has maintained its classical and neoclassical architecture almost unchanged for over two centuries. Wonderful churches are to be found in the heart of the city, some of them on the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage routes. Intense renovation in recent years has seen the city bring its architectural, culinary, and cultural heritage to the 21st century.

Bordeaux: A Living TreasureToday, Bordeaux stands proud among the most beautiful places in France, boasting more protected historical buildings than any other French city after Paris. A waterfront redevelopment has introduced a new public tramway for quick travel across the city. The port itself has new berthing facilities that run the length of the docks along the river downtown. The very heart of the city is pedestrian, allowing passengers to easily discover the town on foot, participate in the many festivals throughout the year, enjoy a drink at an outside café or shop at international boutiques that offer special duty free terms.

Port of Bordeaux: an Atlantic HubAs part of the “Atlantic Alliance” that gathers 16 ports on the European western coast, Bordeaux can be seen as a profitable and engaging destination through all four seasons of the year. It makes the perfect starting point for an Atlantic Tour (with calls, for example, at Lisbon, Vigo, Jersey, London). Indeed, Bordeaux is one of the most tourist-friendly destinations: over 800,000 visitors per year are welcomed by the Bordeaux Tourism Board, while the region itself records around 10 million tourists per year. Bordeaux is also a member of Cruise Europe association. Atlantic Port of Bordeaux is also a member of Cruise Europe Association which gathers over a hundred member ports between Gibraltar and the Baltic.

Beyond the CityFurther Exceptional Treasures to Discover

The Jurisdiction of Saint-EmilionWithin easy distance by bus, passengers can explore the medieval village and surrounding chateaux of Saint-Emilion, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 for its historic vineyard landscape.

The Gironde EstuaryRich in treasures such as the remains of the region’s third UNESCO classified site: the Citadel de Blaye was built as a fortress by Vauban, Louis XIV’s military architect. Facing Le Verdon, the Cordouan lighthouse at the mouth of the Gironde estuary is the oldest one. It was classified as historical monument in 1862 together with the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris.

The Médoc Wine RouteThe famous “Chateaux Road” winds the visitors through most of the revered names of the Médoc - from Chateau Margaux to Chateau Mouton Rothschild offering the chance to explore the secrets of wine-making and wine-tasting in this most iconic of regions, and to understand the personalities and the politics that have shaped Bordeaux.

The Dordogne ValleyKey archaeological sites and Prehistoric remains are rightly celebrated there with cave paintings at Lascaux in the Valley de la Vézère, also UNESCO protected and dating back 16 000 years.

BordeauxThe Atlantic gem

Bordeaux offers a rare ability to accommodate all size and types of ships on one of its four key berthing locations

Bordeaux is ideal for small to medium sized boats, ideally up to around 255 meters in length. And as soon as you step off the boat, you are in the heart of the city.

Bassens is perfect for medium-sized craft up to 255 meters in length, 15 minutes from Bordeaux center via the brand new Chaban Delmas bridge, and on the way to the vineyards of Cognac or Saint-Emilion.

The biggest ships are best served by Le Verdon, from where the most prestigious chateaux of the Médoc are just 30 minutes away, while the city center of Bordeaux is a short 90 minutes by coach.

A fourth smaller berth is also available in the town of Pauillac in the Médoc, for smaller specialized crafts.

Central BordeauxBordeaux has the immense advantage of a city center berthing that allows passengers to easily discover the charm of the town. Your crew can also take advantage of this proximity to the shops. Getting around is easy with the modern designed tramway which runs all along the quays, plus there is an attractive car-free old town, full of cobbled streets and pavement cafés. Taxis are also available for longer explorations.

Services available on request Bordeaux tourism desk on board to offer key information and advice on what to do in the region Guide joining the boat from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean offering passengers, a guided visit of the Estuary and the vineyards

alongside it.

A city center call, a Unesco Word heritage city, the most renowned vineyards in the world, 4 cruise berths to accommodate all types of ships.“When we have a cruise ship berthing in Bordeaux, Bassens, Pauillac or Le Verdon, there is a festive mood in the air. The

residents love to come down to the quays to watch the big ships arrive; they are committed to help the visitors around. The

Port of Bordeaux, the Municipality, the Tourism Board and all the institutions and partners involved in the process work

hand in hand to constantly improve the welcoming of the ships, of their crew and of their passengers.”

A Taste of WineInsider’s Saint-EmilionAn example of a half day tour: A taste of Saint-Emilion, a once-in-a-lifetime experience in and over Saint-Emilion district

Departing the pier aboard your air-conditioned vehicle, enjoy the approximately 45-minute journey to the launch site, located near the village of Saint-Emilion. Anticipating your memorable adventure, you might wish to roll up your sleeves and assist in the preparation of your flight, which will include the filling of your hot air balloon.

With preparations made and the winds checked, step aboard and gently lift off as your balloon makes its slow, quiet ascent. From this unique vantage point, you will be mesmerized by views of the countryside and lush vineyards unfolding below. The whole Saint-Emilion region is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to winemaking traditions and superb medieval architecture preserved through the centuries. Soon, your expert pilot will guide the balloon back to solid terrain, where snacks and Champagne will be served.

Afterward, return to your vehicle and enjoy the short transfer through the heartland of the Merlot grape and up the vine-covered “hill with a thousand châteaux” to the town of Saint-Emilion. Pass 13th century city walls and a moat carved out of solid rock as you enter this remarkable city. Here, view the Collegiale Church with its magnificent 12th century cloister and ramparts. Browse the bustling marketplace before exploring the underground church. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, this house of God is unique in Europe for its size and tremendous transformation from natural caves into a monolithic hermitage. As you continue to stroll through Saint-Emilion’s winding streets, your guide will point out the Cadene Gate and the King’s Tower before providing you with time to independently browse through the local boutiques, and then rejoin your vehicle for the return trip to your ship.
