THE CROWN INTERVIEWCROWN: Where did you grow up?Danny: We grew up in a poor part of Dublin, near the Guinness1 factory.
CROWN: What was life like? What did kids do in that part of Dublin?Danny: Most of them played football and got into trouble*. Mark: They stole cars, the usual stuff*. Our love of music saved us.
CROWN: Did your teachers encourage* you to be musicians?Danny: No, they said, “You can be an electrician or a plumber*.” Mark: We said we wanted to be musicians. But they laughed at us.
CROWN: You went to America when you fi nished school. How did that happen?Danny: The manager of U2 heard our music. He liked it and got jobs for us in a studio in Los Angeles.

CROWN: Great! What did you do there?Mark: It wasn’t very exciting! We just made tea and helped in the studio. We lived in a horrible house with cockroaches* inside and gun fi ghts in the street outside.Danny: Then Glen came from Ireland and joined us. He is the best drummer! We started The Script.
CROWN: Why did you return to Ireland?Mark: My mother was ill. And a few months later, Danny’s father died suddenly. Danny: That was a bad time. Music helped us in our darkest moments.
CROWN: And now you live in London and tour* the world?Mark: Yes, we live in London but Dublin is our home.
