Long, long ago, in the time before computers or cars or even you and

me, there was a crow in a tree at the top of a hill.

Although the crow was quick and clever, he was stuck in that tree frommorning till night, because he didn’t know how to fly.

Of course, this made it much harder for him to find food to eat, andmost days his tummy rumbled so loudly it made mountains fall over.

One day, a mouse sat down at the bottom of the crow’s tree.

“What are you doing, little mouse?” asked the crow.

“I’m having a picnic,” said the mouse, “It’s cheese!”

The crow looked at the mouse’s picnic and his tummy rumbled like this: BADABADA-PLIPPER-PLONG-PLOOP!

“Your tummy sounds freaky, dude,” said the mouse.

“I know,” the crow said, “I’m so hungry I could eat a moose. Could Ihave a some of your cheese?”

“Positootley!” said the mouse. He broke off a piece of cheese and held itup for the crow. But the crow was too high up to reach it, so he leanedover the edge of his branch. He stretched further and further, until –

 yeep!

 – he slipped and fell!

The crow fell down: “AHHHHHHHHH!” but right before he hit theground, he spread out his wings as far as they could go, and a gust of wind picked him up and he soared into the air!

“I can fly!” said the crow.

“You can fly!” said the mouse.

“Yippee!” said the crow.

And then he swooped down and snatched all the cheese out of themouse’s hands.

“Hey! What’s up with that?” said the mouse.

The crow landed on a branch and looked at the cheese, feeling veryproud of himself and how well he could fly.

“I’m quite fantastic,” he said to the mouse, “I can fly! I have inventedflying! I am truly amazing!”

“Okay, now wait a minute...” said the mouse, “LOTS of things can fly.You didn’t make that up just now.”

The crow got very angry.

“What do you mean, LOTS OF THINGS CAN FLY? I invented it!It’s mine! Why, if anybody else wants to fly, they need to ask ME first!”

“Uh huh,” said mouse, “I think you’re looney.”

“I’m not looney, I’m fantastic! Everyone thinks so! Why, I’ll make you adeal: if you can find any creature that will say I DIDN’T invent flying, I

will give you back your cheese!”It was good cheese, too, so the mouse sighed and went off in search of someone that would tell the crow he was wrong.

That afternoon, the mouse came back with a butterfly. The butterflyfluttered up and landed on the tree next to the crow.

“Hallo,” said the butterfly, “The mouse tells me you can fly.”

“Yes I can!” said the crow, “And YOU have stolen the idea from me!”

“Stolen it?” said the butterfly, “Mr Crow, butterflies have been flying

since before you learned to yabber. I did not steal anything from you.You are insane.”

Page 8: Crow Who Could Fly

”I INVENTED FLYING!” yelled the crow, “and if you want to keep onflying, you had better be nice to me! If you don’t, I will fly after you nomatter where you go, and gobble you up!”

This scared the butterfly so much that three spots fell right off her wings. Just then the crow’s tummy grumbled like this: WAKAWAKA-BIDDLY- DOO-DAH!  He thought to himself: “Oh boy, I’m so hungry I could eat a

hippopotamus!”

So he said: “I have an idea, little miss butterfly... if you bring me a snack every Monday at noon, I will not eat you at all, and you can keep onflying.”

“Oh thank you! Thank you!” cried the butterfly, and flew away as fast asshe could.

Later that day, the mouse came back with a sparrow. The sparrowzipped up and landed on the tree next to the crow.

“Howdy,” said the sparrow, “The mouse told me you started flyin’!”

“Yes I did!” said the crow, “And YOU have stolen the idea from me!”

“Sorry, stolen?” said the sparrow. “Crow, ol’ buddy ol’ pal, sparrows have

been flyin’ since before you cracked your egg. I didn’t steal nothin’ from you. You’re crazy like a cucumber.”

“I INVENTED FLYING!” yelled the crow, “and if you want to keep onflying, you had better be nice to me! If you don’t, I will fly after you nomatter where you go, and scratch you and bite you all day long!”

This scared the sparrow so much that his beak dropped open and hestarted to drool all over his feathers. Just then the crow’s tummygrumbled like this: WINK-WONK-WINK-WONK-BUMBA-DUMBA-DOO!

He thought to himself: “Oh man, I’m so hungry I could eat twoelephants and a cheesecake!”

So he said: “I have an idea, little mister sparrow... if you bring me asnack every Tuesday at noon, I will not scratch you or bite you, and youcan keep on flying.”

“Oh thank you! Thank you!” cried the sparrow, and flew away as fast ashe could.

Later that day, the mouse came back with a penguin. The penguinsoared up and landed on the tree next to the crow.

“Aloha,” said the penguin, “The mouse says you learned to fly!”

“Yes I did!” said the crow, “And YOU have stolen the idea from me!”

“What? Stolen?” said the penguin. “Crow, old bean, penguins have

been flying since before you were an egg in your mama’s nest. I didn’tsteal anything at all. You’re nutty like a snowman with his nose left off.”

”I INVENTED FLYING!” yelled the crow, “and if  you want to keep onflying, you had better be nice to me! If you don’t, I will fly right after youno matter where you go, and... and...”

The crow saw how big the penguin was, and knew he couldn’t eat him orscratch him or bite him. So he said: “I’ll fly right after you and poop on

 your head!”

Page 12: Crow Who Could Fly

The penguin was shocked! He certainly didn’t want to be pooped on allday. So he said: “Crow, you didn’t invent flying, and I’m not giving youpresents just because you’re mean. If you want to be silly, be silly by

 yourself.”

So the penguin packed up his stuff and got on a boat and sailed to Antarctica, where he learned that sliding around on your tummy all day

is a lot more fun than flying, anyway.

After a few more days, the crow had managed to scare so many creaturesthat he had a snack for every day of the week. Everywhere he went, people said,

“Hello, crow! You’re fantastic!”

and

“Hiya, crow! What a guy!”

But when he was gone, no one was happy.

The butterfly and the sparrow and the owl and the flamingo and allother creatures were sad. Sad and hungry. The crow took so much of their food that they didn’t have enough for themselves.

Page 14: Crow Who Could Fly

The next day, the mouse called to the crow: “Hey, crow! Now that youhave snacks every day of the week, could you PLEASE give my cheeseback? You don’t need it anymore!”

The crow just laughed: “I don’t think so, my smelly little friend! I’mgoing to eat it for dessert RIGHT NOW!”

And just as the crow was about to pop the cheese into his mouth, themouse shouted:

“STOP! There’s one more creature! One you haven’t seen! One whostill thinks you didn’t invent flying!”

Page 15: Crow Who Could Fly

The crow glared down at the mouse, mad as a pig without buckets.

“WHO?” he growled.

“Welllllll ,” said the mouse, “I don’t think you want to talk to him. He’sbeen flying for a VERY long time, and he gets kinda cranky. He won’tlike it if you’re bossy.”

The crow laughed loudly.

“Don’t be silly!” he said, “I’m not bossy, I’m fantastic! I inventedFLYING! EVERYONE that flies should come here and say ‘thank you’to ME!”

The pterodactyl didn’t think so.
