Instructor BiographiesMaureen BeckerI have a BA in Communication Studies from UC Santa Barbara and am also certified in Conflict Mediation. I worked in hospital administration before leaving for Kenya in 1994 with Africa Inland Mission, who we have now served with for over 20 years. Our family lived in Kenya for 8 years and then in England for 7 years. Whilein England, it was my great privilege to be involved in reviving the inner city schools that my children attended.

I’m fascinated by the varying learning styles of my own children and this is what has inspired my interest in teaching at Crossroads. My boys' desire for hands on learning, and for science, is what prompted me to offer classes in these areas. We have four children and will be entering our 7th year of homeschooling. We have been blessed to learn and grow together, and to have the blessing of the Crossroads community all these years.

Michelle ChabraMy major at Stanford University was Human Biology, concentrating on Child Development. After graduating I moved to San Francisco and taught in multicultural preschools in San Francisco and then Seattle while working towards my bilingual multi-subject teaching credential. I received my credential in 1992 and taught in public elementary schools in San Francisco for 7 years until the birth of my first child.

We have homeschooled our children from the beginning and are currently entering our 12th year homeschooling. My two boys are entering 8th and 11th grade in the coming school year. We have been so blessed to be able to learn and grow together in these years.

I am a Certified Barton Tutor, tutoring for the last three years using Barton Reading and Spelling. This programis an Orton-Gillingham based method designed for students who have difficulty with reading and spelling, especially those with Dyslexia. I am also available to consult with parents who suspect their child may have Dyslexia or related difficulties.

As I educate two active boys, I have been motivated to explore new multisensory ways to learn. I am excited about offering classes that allow students to develop using their unique learning styles and to celebrate their many God-given strengths and talents.

Katrina LinnI am currently a Junior in High School, and have been homeschooled since 1st grade. My introduction to music came when I began piano lessons in 1st grade, but transitioned to guitar when I asked my mother to let me try it.She agreed to let me switch and I began playing acoustic guitar in 2009. My focus has mainly been classical butI enjoy exploring other styles such as pop and country. My passion for guitar has developed as I've progressed and I am eager to introduce students to this wonderful, versatile instrument.

Jennifer Martin *My teaching experience commenced in 1987 when I began teaching pre-kindergarten at a local preschool for under-privileged children. I was working toward my multi-subject elementary teaching credential during that time, which I obtained in 1991. I taught public elementary school for eight years until my husband and I decided I would stay home with our three young children. We now have four wonderful teenagers.

I began homeschooling my own children in 2000 and have been homeschooling ever since. In the 2013/2014 school year I will have a high school freshman, sophomore and junior as well as a high school graduate who will be enjoying a gap-year in other parts of the world. It has been an awesome privilege to be an integral part of the unfolding of wonderful young adults.

My favorite subjects to teach in the public school setting were history, current events and geography. As a homeschooler, my favorite subjects have been history, Bible and literature. I absolutely love reading and experiencing great literature of varying genres with my students, and I have been continually amazed at their depth of understanding and insights as we read many fabulous books.

Kayla SchleiningI have been homeschooled since kindergarten and have been attending Crossroads Enrichment Center for as long as I can remember. Currently, I am a junior in high school. One of my many passions is the intellectual andpractical application of the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world (alsoknown as science). I have had experience teaching many classes before including TA-ing for Mrs. Efting, teaching multiple Bible classes for children, and private tutoring.

Instructor: Gail K. EftingContact: [email protected] Length: 90 Minutes class for two semestersAge: 7th to 12th GradeClass Fee: $70 per month, payable first class of monthMaterial/Technology Fee: $40 per student (one time fee)

Credit: Successful completion can be used to satisfy requirements for studies in Rhetoric, Logic, Biblical Hermeneutics, Micro Economics, Life Management Skills, Philosophy and World View, or elective credit, depending on hours spent on the various aspects of the coursework.

Course Description - In order to do their best as unto the Lord in every aspect of their lives, our students will need to know how to apply Scripture to every situation, every day. They will need to be able to think clearly, with discernment, to work through issues logically, to respond effectively and appropriately, and to make sound,Biblical decisions based on accurate observations and conclusions. They will also need to be prepared for typical life management tasks.

Biblical Application to Life Management is simply applying Biblical principles to real life situations. This course will give students the tools they need to "think Biblically" as they build useful life skills related to the many practical, "every day" life issues they will face as adults. It will encourage them to develop their critical thinking skills and teach them effective, Scripturally based strategies for life management. Every class session will focus on a different aspect of life management skills. Socratic and Pauline discussion, practice in Logic andRhetoric, interactive activities, experiential learning, and written analysis will provide the students with opportunities to absorb, process and use the material presented. writer was doing to create the affect he wanted. You will analyze the literary techniques the various authors used, and experiment with them in your own projects. You will need access to the internet for the reading assignments.

College Prep. Advanced Literature (g8-12)Instructor: Lynda DavidsonContact: [email protected] Length: 90 minute class for two semestersAge: Grade 8-12 (Permission if younger and has more advanced skills).Class Fee: $15 per class, due monthly at first class of month

Course Description: This class will explore the five basic literary genres: novels, plays, short stories, essays and poetry. Each category will be viewed from multiple perspectives in regard to the author's purpose, general form of the genre, history of the form and cultural influences on the form. There will be class room discussions looking for themes, archetypes, literary tools and generally what makes a genre work.

Be prepared to discuss the the various assigned works in the classroom. There will be general background research on some selections and always group sharing of ideas during class meetings. We are looking at the various genre from the author's point of view and how did he create his particular affect and what literary tools did he use.

Current PSAT, SAT tests and college preparation classes use these methods of analysis instead of the usual simple comprehension reading. That does not mean that the reading will be any less enjoyable as you move through a compelling novel or dramatic work. Literature should also always be appreciated for its pure entertainment value. The classics are memorable for this trait and are enjoyed years after the novel or poem was penned.

If a student would like honors work in this class please notify the instructor and additional material will be supplied to meet those requirements.

The student will keep a weekly journal for the class terms It will include discussion notes, definitions, and personal observation on the various genres. It should be in a three ring binder so papers can be added and removed. You may be assigned various readings on the web so you will need to access these sites to complete assignments.

Course Description - High School and College work requires the ability to read well, write well, and study effectively. In this class, students focus on learning how to accomplish the “job at hand” well, regardless of the task. Integral to this format is a substantial meta-cognitive dialogue with the teacher and other students, practical application of material learned, and ongoing peer discussion, in response to student questions and observations. The work is tailored to each student. Students who choose to be held to Honors standards will be provided with additional academic and challenge work in all areas of study. This class may be repeated.

Course Content - Using On Writing Well by William Zinsser as a foundation, students create new pieces, simplifying and de-cluttering them, editing for style, redundancy and usage. They will learn to tailor each piece to their audience, focusing on its unity, lead and ending. They will examine principles and practices of writing, such as authorial purpose, audience needs, generic conventions, plot, themes, character development, point of view, style, revision, coherence and the variety of uses of the English Language. Encouragement is provided to build good habits; to write clearly, cogently and appropriately. Students develop a strong foundation for proficiency in all types of writing necessary for college and adult life. They also discover the correlation between experience, ideas and point of view. They learn that good writing includes creating thematic patterns and insightful connections.

Course Description: We are surrounded by electromechanical systems and most of us know little or nothing about how they work. This course is designed to start the student on the path to understanding the building blocks of such systems. With the goal of building a simple wheeled robot we will explore how electrical circuits, switches, sensors, motors, LEDs, microprocessors, and simple programs can be combined to make interesting remote controlled and semi-autonomous robots.

The central focus will be on using an Arduino board to read signals from the real world and use those to control, first individual pieces and then, the behaviors of the robot. The learning objective is to get the student to the point where they understand enough that they can use the literature to continue building and programming devices on their own. The Arduino is currently one of the most popular control devices for robot hobbyists and experimenters.

Programming the Arduino is done using a subset of the C programming language with the user interface

typically housed on a laptop and communications between the computer and the Arduino using a USB cable. No prior programming experience is assumed.

The course will be taught using hands on directed learning. After an initial familiarization with terms and techniques, students will be guided through a difficulty graded series of projects that lead to a robot. Movementthrough the projects will be self paced with the final accomplishment being open ended based on student aptitude, preparation, and interest.

Costs:

There are three fundamental costs to the course.First, the student must have access to a computer, ideally a laptop, which is capable of hosting the development environment. This machine must run Windows (XP or later), Mac OSX, or LINUX and it must have a USB port (2.0 or better). If the student does not have this, used laptops which are suitable can be obtained for less than $150. The development environment is open source and free.

Second, the student must have a target set of hardware. This would include an Arduino Uno Kit, a breadboard, assorted components, and a robot base with wheels. The price for this fluctuates with changes in component costs but the basic package is typically available for $75 to $90. The robots are battery powered and there will be some cost for batteries. An excited student could spend considerably more but it is not necessary for this course. There are numerous texts available for Arduinos and robotics. They typically run from $20 to $50. Handy if the student wants to continue exploration on their own but not essential to the course.

The laptop and the hardware could be shared between two students (siblings?) who are going through the courseat the same pace.

Acquisition of the hardware can be done by the students or, by arrangement, by the instructor for the students.

A text is optional. The one that most closely parallels what I do is:

http://www.amazon.com/Make-Arduino-Controlled-Robot-Projects/dp/1449344372

Make an Arduino-Controlled Robot by Michael Margolis for ~$20.

We will actually start with a workbook included with the basic Arduino parts kit. There is also lots of stuff on the net.
