I really enjoyed the Celebration of Us at the last

Program Meeting. Thank you to Janet Borst for her

hard work in putting the program together!! It was fun

to hear about all the people who started our Guild and

the changes in the quilting world. The question that

keeps sticking in my head is “Where were you in

1983?”

Were you hand quilting like the makers of the first

Opportunity Quilt? Were you learning to machine

piece with calico fabrics? Were you carrying on a

family tradition by teaching your children about

quilting? Did you even think about how quilts were

made or were they just something that covered the

bed and kept you warm at night?

No matter where we were in 1983, we all obviously

enjoy quilting now, otherwise we wouldn’t be part of

the Guild. And even with all the changes in the

industry in the last 30+ years, the basic designs and

skill of the traditional quilts are still an inspiration. I

started my quilting journey in 1989 with a Log Cabin

pattern in red, white and green. I wasn’t really thinking

of Christmas when I picked out the colors. I then

moved on to a Trip Around the World pattern. I

remember spending hours in the fabric store trying to

decide on fabrics for that quilt. Both quilts were tied

because I that was the way I was taught. A few years

later I actually attempted a Grandmother’s Fan

pattern for a wedding present. I honestly can’t

remember if I finished it. I just remember trying to

hand quilt it on a hoop. Maybe that was when I quit

quilting for a while. I loved the idea but the execution

was a lot harder than I anticipated.

Wherever you were in 1983, or whenever you started

your quilt journey, think of all the progress you have

made and the things you have learned along the way.

Maybe that is a good theme for your Hot August

Nights challenge!?!

Keep stitching,

Angie Gohn, President

From Our Vice Presidents

It is amazing that June is around the corner. I thought retirement slowed down

time! It goes by faster than ever! A big thank you to Janet Borst for being our

program speaker and facilitating such an interesting and fun celebration of our

guild! A special thank you to Yvonne Jones and Pat Cole for arranging the

wonderful refreshment table with all those delicious and fattening desserts!

Our next program speaker will be Sue Seifkin sharing a wonderful story of her quilt

journey. Paddy Shopher will be instructing the June workshop on Saturday, June

13 and June 27. Contact Teri Harman if you want to attend the workshop and/or

need more info. Hurry, there are only a couple of spots left!

Carolyn Huff has opened a wonderful photography studio at 1224 K St. in

Modesto. She has started to feature different artists and quilters each month. This

month Janet Borst has a wonderful exhibit of her quilts. Carolyn's work is

phenomenal and so check out the new studio!

Don't forget our July Free Sew on Thursday, July 16th, at Ladybug’s Quilt Shop in

All the publications in our guild library have been

reviewed and a large number of older quilt books

have been culled out. Consideration was given to

each book as to its relevance to current quilting

techniques and trends, and whether many guild

members had used the book. We will be holding a

Book Sale at the Business Meeting on June 23,

where the culled quilt books will be sold off in a silent

auction. Bids will start at $1 and increase by 50¢.

You may browse through the books from 6:45 p.m.

until meeting time, during the break, and after the

meeting adjourns for about 10 minutes. Don’t miss

your opportunity to sort through the books and find an

interesting summer quilting project.

We will no longer hold fiction books in our library

inventory. If you donated fiction books and would like

them returned to you, email Ann at

[email protected] with the title and author

information. Any unclaimed fiction books will be put

on the Free Table on June 23.

After the June 23 Business Meeting, all leftover books

(quilt and fiction) will be donated to Hope Chest Thrift

Store at 1241 McHenry Ave, Modesto. Many thanks

to Louise Nelson and Janice Skiles for their

indispensable help in this project!
