There was an article in the San Antonio Express a few weeks ago about a new group formed called the Death Café. It is essentially a group of people who get together and talk about death and dying. There are about 700 chapters of Death Cafés around the world.

So far, attendance has been rather low – about 7 people - and most of them are in the “business of dying” (funeral homes, embalmers). The leader said, “It’s been an uphill battle because people don’t like to talk about it.” I don’t in any way mean to throw cold water on this idea, but I think people are more interested in talking about life after death!

It seems that no matter where you are spiritually, everyone is rightfully interested in “what’s next.” This new four-week sermon series in July is going to be a no frills, open our Bibles, and answer that question series.

Some of it will be hard to hear. Some of it will be so exciting to hear that it will be hard to stay in your seats. All of it combined will hopefully invoke the same response from everyone – cling to the offer of Jesus.

I hope you come all four weeks and bring a neighbor along with you.

LIFE

What would it take for you to move your family across the country for a new job? Imagine your home is in Colorado, surrounded by an amazing view of majestic mountains, and you enjoy your job. How easy would it be for you to pick up your family and move to the Texas hill country for a new job opportunity?

That would be a tough call for any of us to make, and only one thing could make that decision easier and crystal clear. What if you could see that the past several years had been preparing you for the new opportunity? That is what Tom and Cami Anthony were able to see when Tom was offered the opportunity to serve at Oak Hills Church as our Minister of Community Life.

We are so excited to welcome the Anthony family to San Antonio! Tom joined the staff in February as the Minister of Community Life, leading a team of ministers who are committed to bringing the presence of Christ to every neighborhood in San Antonio and Fredericksburg. Tom previously served as the Neighborhood Pastor at Pantego Bible Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and most recently as the Executive Pastor at The Ascent Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

We asked Tom to share with us where his passion for bringing the love of Christ to the neighborhood came from and this is what he shared:

“In 1998, I was driving out of my neighborhood heading to yet another church event or meeting, and I was waving to my unchurched neighbor, Craig, as I drove out. He was standing in his yard playing catch with his boys, and I thought, ‘Why would Craig want my life? I actually want his life!’ It hit me how I was so busy with doing church I didn’t have a chance to be the church to my neighbors. That started a journey for me, my family, and our churches to make outreach in our neighborhoods an intentional part of our daily lives. Since then, we have seen and experienced some unbelievable blessings in seeing neighbors grow closer to Jesus Christ and church members experience all God has for us. God is truly at work all around us!”

We are blessed to welcome the Anthony family to Oak Hills Church and we are confident you will be blessed as you get to know them.

WELCOME TOM ANTHONY!

The Anthony Family

A mother wonders, “How will I provide Christmas gifts for the children since their father is in prison? How will they know he loves and misses them?” Our OHC family answered those questions for 1,075 children this past Christmas by purchasing and delivering gifts, CHF food boxes, educational materials, Bibles, and a message from the incarcerated parent as part of the Angel Tree Ministry.

Oak Hills families opened their hearts to 725 Angel Tree children. The Women of the Word Bible Class, led by Joy Pruett, adopted 20 of these families and shared the Christmas Story along with the gifts. Many made multiple visits, taking Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas trees and decorations, shoes and clothing for the children. Some even scheduled and paid for maintenance work on their homes.

OHC members also encouraged their employers, employees, and colleagues to become involved – Turean (Jeff Jaime); Texas Liver Institute (Scarlet Membreno); 210 Workers (Blanca Corrie); Aerial Athletics (Heather Schnelzer); Rawlinson Middle School (teachers and staff); and Coyle Engineering (Mike and Beth Coyle) blessed 350 children with gifts.

Even as blessings were given, blessings were also received by those who served. Here’s what they said:

• The children were thrilled to hear from their incarcerated parent!

• We received lots of hugs and thanks.• These gifts were the only ones the

children received this year.• The children listened attentively to the

Christmas story and asked questions.• The family requested prayers.• We are going to continue to stay in

touch and help this family.• It was wonderful for my children to

meet this family.• It is the highlight of our Christmas

season to be able to visit and help these children.

• We love doing Angel Tree and can’t wait to participate again next year.

Our OHC members responded to Jesus when he said “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

Many thanks to Irene White for her devotion and leadership of this ministry!

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

At Oak Hills Church, volunteering is not what we want from you, but what we want for you. If you have an interest in serving others, we want to provide you an opportunity to use your gifts for God’s vision. As we grow larger as a church, we want to work hard at growing smaller—finding connecting points for people and letting each person know how much they matter. It is our desire for every person to Belong in community, Grow in Christ-likeness and Serve with their gifts.

Volunteering on the HOST Ministry team is a family endeavor! Not only do we support each other, but it is a great way to serve with your family. Currently 20 couples and 11 families serve together on the HOST Ministries team each weekend.

To volunteer on our HOST Ministry team, email Denise Gardner at [email protected] to sign up! Orientation will explain opportunities for serving in order to help find your

best fit. The initial commitment period is six months. Once you have volunteered in a role for six months, you may choose to continue in that role, try something different, or take a break from volunteering. Most of our volunteer teams are on a monthly rotation.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

“A great joy and blessing to our family is that my 9 year old granddaughter, Camdyn, has been helping in the Host ministry alongside me for over 3 years now. She loves to wear her black vest… The Host Ministry is a great way for families to serve Oak Hills Church.”

This summer, the women of Oak Hills will study Lysa Terkeurst’s Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions. Often, women hold their feelings inside until we reach overload and explode, subsequently speaking in anger and saying words we later regret. Through this study, we will learn how to resolve conflict in healthy ways and improve communication with those around us.

Milestone Celebrations take place along the path of our lives. Well known speaker and author, Jim Wideman defines a Milestone as “an event proceeded by a period of instruction from parents which celebrates a spiritual development point in a child’s life.” These are treasured moments where significant teachings and values are shared and passed on to our children as part of our legacy. At Oak Hills Church they are spiritual stepping stones and life affirming events that we value for our families campus-wide.

As a church we are committed to our children, and more importantly to our families. From birth to graduation we seek to come alongside parents to encourage and equip them to take the lead as spiritual trainers for their children. If the church and family are to work together to equip the generations, we need strong stepping stones to help sustain us on a common path. Everything we do through each of these milestones at OHC helps mature and grow our people spiritually. This is not a passive experience. As parents, we participate in every aspect of our children’s spiritual milestones and in the process our own faith is enriched.

We are blessed under the volunteer leadership of Phillip Wiley and Robin Saunders by their commitment to help

define and more intentionally implement our Milestone Celebrations across our six campuses. These occasions offer us an opportunity to create and evoke rights of passages that celebrate our children as babies and as they continue to grow in their journey of Faith.

If we as Elders, leaders, parents, and the Body of Christ, place an importance on these Milestones, so will our children. It shows our children that we value them as part of this body – and want to celebrate them in each facet of their life. We are marking their maturity from a biblical worldview according to God’s Word – instead of the cultural worldview. This is not only for our children, it’s for us, the church. It not only holds us accountable to the children of Oak Hills, but to each other as the Body of Christ.

As a Family Ministry Team, we pray our legacy for the next generation is deep love and value for God’s Word as absolute truth for their lives. May each spiritual milestone serve to teach them the importance of loving God with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their mind and strength. There is no greater gift, no greater legacy and no greater joy than to know that our children walk in truth (3 John 1:4).

Agape Trail is designed to bring our 5th graders into a greater understanding of who they are in Christ. Agape Trail also aids our 5th graders and their families in the transition from Bibleland to Student Ministries.

Through monthly Bible lessons (September-April) students are reminded of the love that comes from Jesus, their parents, and their church. They also learn important virtues and Bible truths. In addition to the weekly 5th grade class, we offer a monthly class to help encourage and equip parents to be the spiritual leaders of their children. Agape Trail culminates with a three-day retreat in April that reinforces the teachings and brings students closer together knowing they have the love and support of family and friends.

Our prayer is that through these teachings their faith and beliefs will be increased so that they can withstand the upcoming social pressures of middle school.

The Baby Blessing Milestone exists to encourage and equip parents, and bless our newest babies, primarily newborns to age two. The Baby Blessing Milestone consists of the Parent Training Class and the Blessing Ceremony.

During training, parents receive tools that empower them as primary faith trainers of their children. Moms and dads hear from parents who give wise counsel in the primacy of prayer, and in raising and spiritually training children.

The weekend after parents complete the training, the Blessing Ceremony commences as a part of the weekend worship service. The Blessing time includes parents making verbal responses to commitments read by an Oak Hills Church Elder followed by a time of prayer over the babies. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to a reception.

The Pathway to Kinder Milestone is an evening for parents and children entering Kindergarten. The evening includes a workshop where parents hear from an Elementary Administrator about what they can expect once their child begins Kindergarten. Parents also hear from an Elder couple encouraging parents to pray with their children, value the Bible as their guide for living, build trusting relationships with their children, and encourage the value of family worship.

While parents attend the parenting workshop, children hear from a Kindergarten teacher, make new friends, and enjoy a banquet celebration. The celebration concludes with a charge to the parents from Deuteronomy 6 and a blessing from our Elders.

Statistics show that the people you meet in the first 72 hours on a college campus will be the ones to most likely mold and shape your college experience. Because of this, College Ministry takes an opportunity each fall to intentionally welcome and bless all incoming freshman. They are celebrated through the “First 72 Hours” Milestone.

In this Milestone, students are connected to upper classmen who are members at Oak Hills Church in order to formulate discipleship relationships during their freshman year. The First 72 Hours Milestone occurs at the end of August in the Student Center on the Crownridge Campus.

The Senior Celebration Milestone consists of preparation and celebration. The goal of this milestone is to rejoice in a student’s faith journey and provide them with practical tools to walk out their faith as an adult.

In early spring, we encourage all high school seniors to experience College Ready with their parents. College Ready is a study to help students see their college experience through clear and practical eyes. It helps both students and parents work from the same set of biblical priorities as they prepare for college.

Each May, Student Ministries hosts the Senior Celebration, a formal send off dedicated to honoring our graduates and their families. Parents and students share a meal with friends, family, Elders, and staff. A special message offers a final challenge to seniors and their parents, and parents are given time to pray and share a blessing with their son or daughter. This is a Milestone celebration you will not want to miss!

Challen8e is a two-part Milestone for 8th grade students and their parents. Part one is an evening experiential seminar with guest speakers that includes dinner. Part two is a one-night retreat for both parents and students that culminates with a time of blessing. Challen8e gives parents structure to guide their children through three topics:

Truth: Equip students with the knowledge that their relationship with Christ, the Truth, will be their guide through life.

Family Identity: Encourage families to grow together as their children grow to be independent young adults.

Purity: Empower a commitment to purity in all of life through the power of Christ.

One of the best ways we can lead our families is to serve others together. Through serving, we learn about God’s grace, experience the power of His spirit in us, and grow in faith.

We have seen this powerfully over the last year in OHC’s global outreach, where more and more families are serving together on short term missions. In 2013, Oak Hills had 23 family units traveling together, totaling 52 people. That is over one-quarter of all our total short-term missionaries traveling with someone else from their family.

Many trips saw mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, or some mix traveling together. I had the joy this past December of joining my ten-year old daughter, Camila, on her very first mission trip. We were part of a team delivering Manos de Cristo boxes to communities in rural Nicaragua. It was a joy to see my daughter grow in confidence, explore her faith, and reach out to others.

We were joined by a father-son pairing, as well as a mother and daughter. In both cases, the child was a senior in High School, giving the trip added significance for them and their parents.

Whole families have also traveled together. Eric and Mayra Long and their two daughters, Naomi and Mia, were part of a team that worked with troubled youth in El Salvador.

“The meetings, preparation, and learning leading up to the trip

was instrumental for our family,” said Eric. “We were able to spend more time talking and being together while completely aligned on a goal. It gave us an opportunity to talk about our faith, our relationships, and the reasons for mission work…The effect has been transformational,” he said. “We are looking forward to making smaller commitments in our community as well as repeating the cross-cultural trips. It was just an amazing blessing to be a part of God’s work.”

Waylan Owens joined his two teenagers, Austin and Emme, on the same mission to El Salvador.

“The biggest impact to our family was experiencing God through the power of prayer while we ministered to these young, hurting teens together. Though our hearts and energy were focused on the youth as we witnessed the Holy Spirit work through us, we were impacted in the same powerful way as those we were there to serve,” Owens said. “The humility we gained in understanding how God views the world was tremendous. We came home, not with feelings of guilt by being blessed in living in the USA, but with an immense amount of responsibility to serve those in need, utilizing the tools and blessings God has given us to do His will.”

THANK YOU, OAK HILLS CHURCH! Your Acts 1:8 offerings have helped three families complete the adoption process. Two little girls and one little boy from China were taken up, up, and away from their orphan beds and into the arms of their forever families.

Last August, Randy Frazee and Steven Curtis Chapman announced the partnership between Oak Hills’ Tapestry Ministry and Chapman’s Show Hope organization. The partnership provides grants to qualified families to help offset the costs of adoption. The hope is that families who are called by God to live out the mission of James 1:27, to care for orphans and not see the financial aspect of adoption as a barrier to providing a loving home to a child.

The first grant recipients reflected, “While lives were unfolding in China, we were praying - about adoption, about finding the child that was meant for our family, about faith and trust, and following God’s will for us.” After receiving the grant,

they wanted Oak Hills Church to know: “We left feeling so very encouraged and supported. It was just what we needed. Being the first family to receive a Tapestry /Show Hope grant is an honor for us and such a blessing to our adoption. You are the hands and feet of Jesus. We are obviously thrilled and cannot wait to meet this little girl. Chosen by us - but truly chosen by God. ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.’ James 1:17.”

As we delivered the good news of the adoption aid grant to the second family, there was much rejoicing. There was also a fair amount of worry as this sweet family expressed the reality of still being separated by 10,000 miles and an ocean from their three year old child in China. In response, parents, brother, and sisters wrote prayers for him on brightly colored, helium-filled balloons. The rainbow of colors reminded us of God’s promises from Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I

have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” We went outside and released the balloons up into the sky. We watched them until they disappeared. Up, up, and away we sent the concerns to the God of the 10,000 miles between the family members.

Congratulations to the Simpson family of Boerne, the Coriell family of Kyle, and the Holcombe family of New Braunfels.

The Tapestry Ministry mission is connecting, encouraging, and equipping families called by God to make a difference in children’s lives through adoption, foster care, and/or orphan care. In addition to the Show Hope grant partnership, Tapestry educates the body of Christ through Foster/Adopt 101 classes, and offers parenting classes through Empowered to Connect.
