 "O Come, O Come Emmanuel "

This familiar hymn reminds the church of the season of Advent, a time traditionally marked for remembering the years of preparation and consecration prior to the coming of the Messiah. For many centuries, the Church has identified the beginning of the Christmas celebration with a time of reflection and expectation called Advent. The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival" and, when used in conjunction with Christmas, reminds us of the anticipation and expectation held over hundreds of years by the people of Israel for their Messiah and promised King. For centuries before Christ, Hebrew rabbis methodically and passionately taught the Jewish people that Messiah was coming. They taught that the people should be ready to embrace their King when he appeared. They emphasized the need for holy living and obedience to God's law. This explains how the lowliest shepherds and fishermen of that day were acquainted with the promises of a Messiah. This season of preparation was all by God's design. Today, we mark Advent in the Christian church with the display of a wreath - its circle reminds us of God Himself, eternal and endlessly merciful. It is evergreen - reminding us of the hope of eternal life. The four outer candles incorporated into the display represent the time of waiting and preparation for the Messiah during the four Sundays of Advent (thought by many theologians to represent the four hundred years of prophetic silence between Malachi and the angelic visitations of the Gospels). The light of the candles reminds us of the Light of world, and the prophetic promise of His coming. The white central candle of the Advent wreath, lighted at Christmas, reminds us of the fulfilment of His first Advent and the pure, humble means by which He came.

Christians today have tasted of His first coming as Saviour, experiencing His forgiving grace and saving power. Through study, we have learned about and embraced the truths of His virgin birth, His sinless life, His atoning death, and His glorious resurrection. The first Advent was the glorious manifestation of incarnation - the uniting of God and man in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, born of a virgin in a lowly stable in obscure Bethlehem. This indeed was a magnificent and redeeming event without comparison! But all Christians must also appreciate and embrace another significance in this season of Advent. This Church season is also a prime opportunity to affirm the promise of Jesus that just as He came once, He would one day in the future return to the earth as Sovereign Ruler. The day He ascended into heaven, two angels appeared and gave His disciples peace and comfort with this promise: "This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11NKJV). The Apostle Paul revealed that "the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God" (I Thessalonians 4:16). May all Christians in this season of Advent do more than observe a lifeless church tradition. May the Church passionately encourage each other with the awesome promise that Jesus readies Himself even now to return in splendour and majesty - in a much different manner than His first advent. He will then be revealed as Sovereign of the Universe - King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and Victor over death, hell and the grave. There is a variety of theological thought and belief concerning the timing of Christ's return, and the events preceding and following His soon-coming return. Those discussions are valid and important. Yet, the Church must never lose sight of, nor lessen the value of the basic belief of His Second Coming, so lovingly and longingly held since the Early Church age. Then, as now, reminding one another of Christ's promise to return is not only a strengthening message of hope, but also a call to holy

living and righteous expectation of His potential revelation in glory. Paul taught his followers to say, "Maranatha! O Lord, come!" (I Corinthians 16:22). We read these words once again and in these days of tragedy, uncertainty, and war, let the Church arise to her renewed hope and expectancy. In this Advent season, may we be even more encouraged, hopeful, and purposeful, looking with passion for the second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ. May our lives, our thoughts, and our words reflect our desire for the soon-coming return of Jesus, our glorious King! Have a blessed Advent and a peace filled Christmas! November has been a busy month for Guild Members. On Saturday 5 th November 52 Members and friends had an enjoyable afternoon at the Civic Theatre seeing Calamity Jane performed by Our Lady’s High Musical Society. On 1st November Major Chris Connelly from the Salvation Army was the Speaker. His talk gave Members an insight into the problems many people in Scotland had to cope with. He described his introduction to the Salvation Army and his decision to becoming an Army Officer. He told us about the varied jobs he had had as a Serving Officer. His illustrated Talk showed the different ways his organisation helped people with chaotic and difficult lives. He talked about some of the failures and of the successes of their interventions in their clients’ lives. By the end of the evening Members had a deep insight to the excellent and rewarding work being done in the Lanarkshire area by Members of the Salvation Army. On 15th November Sarah Quinn from Visibility Scotland was the Speaker. She gave a very interesting illustrated talk on the work of this organisation. She explained the assistance they can give to people with sight problems. She explained about the different groups they have – some teaching those with limited sight to read, play a musical instrument, sing in a choir or meeting together with others with similar difficulties to find out what kind of help is available to them. She described the various aids available to make it easier to live in your own home, from talking watches to smartphone apps on phones accessing talking books or making phone calls. She showed the best way to assist blind or partially- sighted people to move about in crowded areas. Her talk gave members an insight into the valuable and useful work done by her organisation. Sunday 20th November was Guild Sunday and there was a good attendance of members at the front of the Church when three Guild Members took part in Morning Worship- Mary Gray and Anne Uprichard doing the Bible Readings and Betty Usher the closing prayer. THE AGM AND CONFERENCE OF THE SCOTTISH FAIR TRADE FORUM WAS HELD ON SATURDAY, 10 SEPTEMBER 2016 AT GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY . The main points were: Over 400 companies now work with fair Trade. There were £1.67 billion retail sales in the UK in 2014. In 2014, £25 million premium was generated (the additional sum that is

paid and is to be used for community projects for the benefit of the whole community).

There are over 600 FT towns in the UK with a population of over 350,000. The UK is the biggest market for FT in the world. 4 out of 5 people in the UK trust the FT mark. BUT, there are new challenges, for example, the effect of climate change on, for example, coffee and honey. However, the Waitrose Foundation has entered into a partnership which will be launched during FT fortnight, 2017. The guest speaker was Dom Omondi Odida, the general secretary of the Microdepo Miners’ Association, Midgori, Kenya. He told us what life was like for his community both before and since the relationship with the FT Association was begun. 90% depend on gold mining for their living. Microdepo was founded in 1999. Before 1999: Gold mining was illegal, informal and on a small scale. There were many accidents and one death per month. There was carbon monoxide poisoning. There was no organisation. There was mercury poisoning. There was environmental degradation on a huge scale. There was no proper disposal of the waste which was washed into the rivers

which affected the people and the fish on which they depended. There was no proper parental control – child labour in school hours,

Page 9: cro Web viewThe word Advent means "coming" or "arrival" and, ... J MartinS SmithRoy Gardiner G NeilsonG SheridanH Sheridan

school drop-outs and teenage pregnancies. There was a lack of support for those injured or for the families of those

killed. Women were not involved at all; men had control of the money. There was a high rate of HIV/AIDS and many widows and orphans. Middlemen provided equipment and capital and bought the produce at very

low prices. The miners had to rely on them and so had no independence.

No thought was given to other ways of generating income; there was no diversification. The objectives of MICRODEPRO. To support formalisation and legalisation of artisanal and small scale

mining. To promote a saving culture. To mobilise resources for equipment and the opening of new mines. To promote health and safety in the mines. To diversify income generation. To mobilise support for those injured in the mines and for the families of

those killed. Progress 1999 – 2102In 2012, the journey towards FT certification began. Equipment to extract the minerals was bought to avoid manual labour. Waste was collected and stored safely in cemented ponds not the rivers. Electric pumps were used thus cutting out the emission of noxious gases. There has been no carbon monoxide poisoning. There have been no deaths in the mines (since 2012). The current situation All work is on common – all work together. There are no middlemen. FT standards prevail. In 2014, the average gold mined by each miner was 580 gms. However, at the end of 2014 production dropped because new sources of gold could not be found. Microdepro pulled out. There was no capital and no support.

Page 10: cro Web viewThe word Advent means "coming" or "arrival" and, ... J MartinS SmithRoy Gardiner G NeilsonG SheridanH Sheridan

BUT by the end of 2015, optimism returned. There is diversification (vegetables) but buyers are needed. The benefits of FT gold; It is mined fairly and responsibly. It is clean and traceable – who the miner was, where, when and how it was

mined. The health and safety of the miners is guaranteed and health care

provided when possible. Child labour is eradicated. There is gender inclusion. There is fair payment for the work. The community is satisfied with the benefits of the premium. ARGOS is now selling FT wedding rings and 200 upmarket jewellers and retailers have begun to use this gold.

Church lets – it was agreed that Sporting Memories who now use the church halls on a Wednesday afternoon be approached about paying for the use. S. Sheridan will get in touch and advise that the hall let will be thirty pounds a week. Bank accounts – G. Neilson has looked into the options of changing the Current account held in the Clydesdale Bank into a charity account. Doing so would not give any benefit to interest and would incur extra charges. It was decided not to change at this time. Property ReportFire protection – Fire Door Maintenance Ltd will visit the church over the next few days with regards to the fitting and work required to be done to fit the required fire doors throughout the building. Boiler Ventilation – No further contact has been made regarding the new ventilation requirement for the boiler. The Environmental Health agency have been out to do the inspection in the kitchen. There were no immediate concerns. But the report back has highlighted 4 areas to be looked at.1. Elementary Food Hygiene Training – This required to be done by the main

handler to allow food preparation in the premises. This will need actioned.

2. A list of BS standard cleaning materials is attached to the report. Current cleaning products all meet the relevant standards.

3. Various records about food preparation, temperatures and cleaning must be kept.

Dishwasher – although no dishwasher is required it is advisable. Further investigation on types, costs and requirements to be looked into. Church hall – A quote has been received for work to be carried out to move the light switch in the large hall. Letter box – The possibility of putting a letter box on the Airbles road door will be looked at. Manse roof – following on the home report on the manse Bromac Ltd had

Page 15: cro Web viewThe word Advent means "coming" or "arrival" and, ... J MartinS SmithRoy Gardiner G NeilsonG SheridanH Sheridan

been out to inspect and give a quote on the cleaning/treating of the manse roof. A quote of 2200 pounds has been given for the treating to be done. This comes in at around what was expected from the home report. Possible manse sale – A plan needs to be put in place regarding the possibility of selling the manse. The plan needs to look at what property is currently available, what the current requirements are for a manse and the procedures to be taken. It is very apparent that the cost of maintenance on the manse is going to increase sharply over the next few years so selling the manse for a newer building should be looked into now.Contact to be made with Presbytery and CofS with regards to putting manse on the market. AOCBG. Hunter has informed the managers that due to health issues he is struggling with some of the duties he carries out. A volunteer has come forward and offered to help out where it is required. Gardens – Now that the gardens have been tidied up we will require to spray the ground with weed killer at the start of spring. As industrial weed killer will be required a company with the correct licence to spray will be required. Communion cards – some new communion cards are required Hall keeper – the hall keeper will be on holiday from the 31 st Oct – 11Th Nov. Organisations will be made aware and arrangement will need to be made for the duties normally carried out. Hall lets – Scrabble Club to use the halls on Saturday 7 th OctoberTrefoil Guild looking for a date for a coffee morning in March 2017. A system to allow organisations to book halls or meeting rooms online is being looked into. There being no further business the meeting was closed with the saying of the grace JOINT SESSION & MANAGERS CONFERENCE – SUNDAY 30 TH OCTOBER 2016 PresentA. Steven, S. Sheridan, C. Sheridan, W. Talbot, J. McDonald, R. GardnerA. Dunn, W. Millar Apologies – H. Sheridan, G. Hunter The managers joined members of session for this conference Moderator Rev G. Black welcomed everyone and opened the conference with prayer The purpose of the conference was to explore further the findings from previous regarding the Constitution and Title deeds of the church. The Moderator reported that after several meetings and discussions there is no clear route as to how we should proceed. The constitution as it stands meets the current guidelines from the Church of Scotland and OSCR as long as decisions made regarding the finance are explained clearly to all of the trustees. The Moderator went on to report that there is a major shortage of Ministers to serve all of the current churches throughout the country. The Church nationally will need to go through some major changes in the next few years to be able to continue to serve. It was proposed and agreed that we should put on hold any further movement on the changing of our constitution until we see what changes and what further developments come from the Church nationally. The conference split into groups to discuss the hopes of Crosshill Parish Church in the near future. After discussion the key points from each group were listed and discussed by everyone. These points will be looked into and brought back at a future meeting. The Conference finished with the saying of the Grace.

THANKS FOR THE DONATION!Dear Mr Neilson Many thanks for passing the kind donation of £251.83 on to us from Crosshill Parish Church, Motherwell. I will write to the church directly to thank them and to send a certificate. Your kindness will make a real difference to the lives of people living in Scotland with Motor Neurone Disease. More than 160 people will be diagnosed this year, and MND Scotland ensures people do not go on this devastating journey alone. Our vision is of a world without Motor Neurone Disease, and together we can reduce the impact of MND on the lives of those affected today and provide hope for a world without MND tomorrow. Because of your help we can support everyone in Scotland who is affected by MND. We offer a variety of practical, financial, and emotional support throughout the country, including; one-to-one counselling, benefits advice, complementary therapy, a loan of our communications equipment, support groups and more. Your support is also funding vital research, in Scotland, to help take us a step closer to finding a cure for this devastating illness. We can, we must, and we will find a cure for MND, and together we will reach this goal. Many thanks again. Yours sincerely Rosie WilsonFinance Assistant
