June 2009 Trip to Kenya

Major Initiatives: - KipKeino Schools- Kenya Athlete Scholar Program

(KenSAP) - Let’s Get Ready International SAT

Program- Micro-finance - Ithaca-Eldoret Sister City- 2nd KipKeino Mile & Health Fair- Cornell University Sports Equipment

KipKeino Schools

Project coordinators conducted site visits to inspect the work in progress, and completed, on the Kipkeino High School.

Project Focus: to support the on-going construction of the school, and to furnish teacher-specific high priority needs.

Conducted needs assessment with HS to determine number, quality of computers needed.

Purchased 17 computers and established ‘free’ site maintenance with local computer company.

KipKeino Middle & High School

Kenya Scholar Athlete Program (KENSAP)

CWA team members, Aaron Merrill and Dr. Michelle Thompson, participated in first round of applicant interviews with KenSAP site team coordinators in Iten, Kenya.

Remaining CWA ‘Big Red Travel Team’ members assisted in evaluating potential student-athletes for the KenSAP program.

Let’s Get Ready International Scholastic Aptitude Test Workshop

LGR-international students were provided ‘tips and techniques’ on how to master the SAT while being provided skill development in English and Math.

Held roundtable discussions on college life as an international student.

Diagnostic testing and one-on-one essay form and structure critiques.

Provided materials and teacher guides for local SAT Instructors in Kapsabet, Kenya.

Micro-Finance

Dr. Thompson presented a donation of five cows to the women of the“Kamobo Women Farm Collective” as a priority project and inaugural micro-finance project.

Program includes cow care workshop and on-going veterinary care.

Program continues with calves in Spring 2010.

August UPDATE: Dr. Benadette Tiony reports that the cows have been successfully de-wormed, injections of multivitamins, ear tagging, etc..

Sub-Saharan Africa Micro-Finance Program for Women

Sister Cities: Eldoret, Kenya - Ithaca, NY

Dr. Thompson presented gifts on behalf of the City of Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson to the City of Eldoret Mayor Sammy Ruto.

The development of a Fall Book Drive will allow local Ithacan institutions to participate in the collection of new and used books to be delivered to KipKeino Schools.

September UPDATE: This project is being led by Board Member Mary Winans, who assisted in the preparation of the 2007 KipKeino Mile event in Ithaca, NY.

2nd KipKeino Mile and Health Fair

Saturday, 28 November 2009 Will provide ‘goody bags’ to Race

participants and event attendees with information on reproductive health(i.e. birth control, etc.) and prevention of HIV/Aids.

Races will be run with co-sponsorship with Martin Keino’s company, Keino Marketing

Collaboration with Moi University Hospital, Office of the Mayor - Eldoret, Kenyan Olympic Committee.
