UCML(S) – An Introduction
The University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) is the HE equivalent of SALT.
It is a professional organisation funded through membership fees
Represents the interests of staff working modern languages, linguistics, cultural and area studies in UK higher education.
Also works with corresponding bodies in other countries.
UCMLS is the Scottish branch of UCML.
Our Aims for Scotland
Work towards a national integrated lifelong learning languages strategy, (focusing on all sectors: nursery, schools, FE/HE, business, adult, workplace- and community based provision)
Implement a sustained national awareness raising campaign highlighting the benefits of intercultural and language learning. There needs to be a society-wide recognition that Scotland (like the UK as a whole) is a multilingual country and that languages are a beneficial resource.
