You’ve been like that for weeks.” Mary moaned. “It’s none of your business.” “But I want to help. Besides, I am your friend.” “All right. I’ll tell you.” Then I told her the whole story. “That was foolish of him. Oh! That Fred. I’m going to kill him now!”

Cross My Heart

“I promise! Cross my heart.”

So there goes the last line Fred and I said when we made our truce. We agreed to help each other with the girl we want and do anything to win her heart. Fred is my very best friend and classmate since I was a child and I’ve never doubted him nor got angry with him ‘til one day ...

We’ve made friends with a girl named Mariel when we were on our first year in high school. Fred fell in love with her and with regards to our pinky promise, I helped him out.

“Come on now, James. I really love her. What should I do? Ask her out?” Fred asked.

“No! You’re kinda fast. Let me think”

“What? What is it?”

“How about giving her chocolates and roses first. Then, when she got inquisitive, tell her what you feel and when she said she feel the same way too, ask her permission if ever you can court her.”

“That’s not bad but I’m nervous. I imagine myself doing that with my whole body shaking. I think I don’t have the guts.”

Then I gave him some more tips that I’ve read from the internet. I made plans for them to have their quality time. Then, there it goes. They become the best of lovers and I was left behind. Fred forgot everything about our pinky promise. He’s with Mariel all the time and he had no time for me.

On day, I was all alone in the room. Everyone went home and I was having my moment. Suddenly, Mary came out of nowhere and she noticed my absence of mind.

“What’s wrong with you? Is there a problem? You’ve been like that for weeks.” Mary moaned.

“It’s none of your business.”

“But I want to help. Besides, I am your friend.”

“All right. I’ll tell you.”

Then I told her the whole story. “That was foolish of him. Oh! That Fred. I’m going to kill him now!”

“No, don’t! I don’t want him to feel guilty. It’s not his fault. He just love Mariel and he doesn’t know how to manage his time. That’s all.” I tried to joke and smile but my tears betrayed me.

Mary patted my shoulders. From then on, I learned to mingle more with my classmates and I joined Mary and her friends. I decided that I don’t need a girlfriend to fill the empty part of my heart. Friend are enough. Friends who can understand me.
