The Rules of Mus
1.What´s the mus?
• The mus is a card game which has to be played with an official Spanish pack of cards (40 cards in total).
• The mus is a social game which is not lucrative (you do not usually bet money on it). But if you lose sometimes you may have to pay the drinks. The honor of the ‘musolari’ (the player of mus) is what is at stake.
1.What´s the mus?
•The mus is a card game which is a spoken game. You play it fast but you can talk about irrelevant things while you are playing it. You try to confuse your opponent telling things such as:
-Hey man, you are full of ‘beards’ (kings) -I guess you have 31 at least
-The one who cuts the mus being the
hand (‘la mano) is a pig (‘marrano).
-You are clearly cheating on me (Vas de farol)
The one who plays the small game (chicas), it’s a mus loser. But with 3 cards of small game for the first time, cut the mus and shout!
If your opponent is getting angry because of the mus you can politely tell him, hey man I have a room to cry up there if you
want to go!
2. The Rules of Mus
INTRODUCTION
• The mus consist of 4 stages in the same hand. • A hand begins when somebody cuts the mus and finishes when the 4 stages are over. • The game finishes when you get to 40 points in the same cow (‘la vaca) or when you bet everything (you throw down an ‘ordago’ and your opponents accept it).
2. The Rules of Mus
• The game has to be played with 4 people (2 pairs of 2 people each). So, one pair of 2 people is playing versus the other pair of 2 people. You can only play mus with 4 people, the watchers just watch and give tobacco if they are required!
2. The Rules of Mus
• You give 4 cards to each person and if everybody says Mus, then you can discard all the cards you may want to. You have to take into consideration that the kings and threes are the most valuable (they are the best at the big game, pairs, and point for the game) whereas a four or a five is quite useless.
2. The Rules of Mus
• If you have a 4, a 5, and two 7 is quite nasty. (you have no game, not a big game and a shit of pairs) It’s not good. If you have 4,5,6 y 7 (then you get the perete)
2. The Rules of Mus
• You’d better cut the mus if you have (2 kings, 1 horse and one Ace). You have 31 at game, you have good big game, and good pairs)
Let’s see the 4 phases of the hand
First Stage: You play the big game
KINGS AND THE THREES HORSES
THE JACK
First Stage: You play the big game
THE ACES AND THE TWO
Second Stage: you play the small game
• It’s just the inverse order from the Big Game.• THE ACES AND THE TWO: The most valuable in
the small game. Remember that aces and twos are the same!
• THE REST: 4,5,6,7. • THE JACK, THE HORSE AND THE KINGS AND
THE THREES. (The order of the least valuable ones in the small game)
Third: The PairsDUPLES
Third: The Pairs
• KINGS AND THREES (ALWAYS THE MOST VALUABLE AT PAIRS). 4 KINGS OR THREES IS THE BEST AT PAIRS.
Third: The Pairs
• HORSES, JACK, THE REST, ACES AND TWO (THE DESCENDING ORDER).
• REMEMBER THE DUPLES ARE FORMED 2 PAIRS WITH 2 PAIRS.
• DUPLES (TWO KINGS-TWO ACES); TWO HORSES- TWO 6, who wins? The duples with two kings wins.
Third: The Pairs
• A TRIO
Fourth: The Game
• You only have game if you have more than 30 POINTS counting the value of the cards.
• What’s the damned value???? Hey man, do not get stressful. Relax! I know you are getting mad with all this strange rules, however when you get used to playing mus you’ll see they are not as difficult as it seems and you’ll really enjoy it. Be careful! It can be an addictive game and many students play it in stead of going to the class.
Fourth: The Game
• KINGS-THREES; HORSES AND THE JACK COUNT THE SAME: 10 POINTS
• THE REST COUNTS WHAT IT IS, 7 COUNTS 7, 6 COUNTS 6, 5 COUNTS 5 AND 4 COUNTS 4.
• ACES-TWO: THEY COUNT JUST ONE POINT.
YOU HAVE 4 CARDS: You have to add them up.
• TWO KINGS, ONE HORSE AND ONE TWO: 10,10,10, 1: 31
• ONE ACE-ONE TWO; ONE HORSE AND A 6: 1,1, 10 , 6: 28 (YOU HAVE NO GAME)
• ONE KING-ONE THREE; 2 CARDS OF 7, ONE JACK: 10,10, 7,7,: 34
• TWO HORSES, ONE CARD OF 6, ONE CARD OF 4: 10,10,6,4: 30 (Sorry, you have no game)
What to do with this?
• The best game is when you have 31. • The descending order is: 32, 40, 37, 36, 34, 35,
33.• If nobody has game (it can happen!) Then you
play it. REMEMBER: YOU PLAY IT ONLY IF NOBODY HAS GAME, IF JUST ONE PERSON HAS GAME YOU DON’T PLAY!!!) THE GAME IS PLAYED VERSUS PEOPLE WHO HAVE GAME IF NOBODY HAS IT THEN YOU PLAY WHAT IS CALLED: THE POINT.
• THE POINT: The best is to get 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24…….. (It follows the logical order)
ARE YOU CRAZY BECAUSE OF THE RULES? YES, ABSOLUTELY.
THE BEST WAY TO PLAY MUS IS PLAYING ‘MUS’, THE EXPERIENCE IS ALWAYS THE HIGHER GRADE.
Open your “Rules book” and look at the page 6.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HAND (THE BETS, THE ORDER AND OTHER QUESTIONS)
The Value of the Cards
• DUPLEX, 31, = 3 POINTS• TRIO, WIN THE GAME (NOT WITH 31) = 2
POINTS• PAIRS= ONE POINT• BIG GAME, SMALL GAME (NOBODY BETS) 1
POINT IF YOU HAVE THE BEST ONE.
The Value of the Cards
• YOUR COUNT YOUR BETS (5 POINTS WERE PLAYED AT BIG GAME AND 7 POINTS WERE PLAYED AT PAIRS) YOU ALSO HAVE TO ADD ALL THE BETS YOU MADE;
RULES ARE MORE OR LESS EXPLAINED, LET’S PLAY AND LEARN WHILE WE ARE PLAYING.
CONCLUSIONS
• Let’s take non Spanish people or Spanish people from Barcelona and let’s play some mus with them, just to teach them how to play mus! The sense of humor is something basic when you’re playing mus!
• The mus is always a practical experience, the best way of learning is playing with someone who knows and who can explain everything to you while you are playing! To sum up, try to understand the theory and then apply it under the wisdom of a well experience Musolari. But old musolaris, do not be so arrogant and be very careful with the usual luck of debutants!!!!
The aim of this and conclusion
THE CROSSCULTURAL METHOD THROUGH A SOCIAL CARD GAME IN SPAIN
(THE MUS).
Benefits
• You can use the foreign language while you are having a social activity. You can meet new people and friends while you are into this activity.•You can learn different habits and cultural aspects about the activity you are developing. It is very important for your cultural background about the habits and traditions in a country.
Benefits
• You may get very involved because you may have a lot of fun while you are in the cross cultural method, you use the language in an appropriate context while you are having fun; this can be great motivation to use the language and can improve your conversation a lot.
• You can use your grammatical background in a real context; it’s time to show your knowledge!
Benefits• After this experience, your motivation for the
language may increase, you learn new interesting things about the country in which you are while you are constantly using the foreign language in which you are interested. In this cultural exchange, there is a wide range of topics and stereotypes you can discuss with your partners.
• The mus (in this case) can be just the excuse to get together, speak while you are playing it and after going out to any other place with your friends.
Benefits
• The cross cultural method involves any other social activity: trips, excursions, outdoor activities, dinners, sports, going to the pub or make parties for getting some fun all together… The conversation through a friendly atmosphere is the most important thing
Any disadvantage?
• Life is not always fun; so a language cannot be only learnt through this method; sorry! It works just as an extra-activity in your language formation. The grammatical rules and all the exercises are essential to speak properly; whereas the social activities in this method are a great excuse to put all your knowledge in practice.
Any disadvantage?
• Sometimes it can be quite hard to form a group for an intercultural exchange. The teacher has to plan the activities and know how many people are interested in; which is not an easy task.
Any disadvantage?
• If the topic or the habit you are trying to show seems to be too unfamiliar or stupid to the student; in that case, the student will not pay any attention at your exercise.
• To sum up, this method works just as an extra-activity for using the language in a friendly atmosphere.
Debate
• 1.- What do you think of using an Spanish card game to get people together and make them talk to each other?
• 2.- Could you constantly use this method in your learning?
• 3.- Is this method useful?• 4.- Has anyone ever done some kind of cross-
cultural method? Would you mind telling us about your experience?
