THEY’RE GOING STREAKING Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s and men’s cross country teams have had a national presence for quite some time. Th e Mountaineer men have been every Top 25 poll since Sept. 30, 2009, which is 19 consectuive ratings. Th e EOU women have been in the Top 25, 13 straight polls. Eastern Oregon’s men’s team have at least received a vote in 24 straight polls, while the women appear in at least the receiving votes category 16 consectuive ratings.

EASTERN OREGON NOTEWORTHY• Th e Mountaineers are running in the Erik Anderson Invite for the fi rst time.• Th e EOU women came in third two weeks ago at the Roger Curran Invite last season, while the men were fourth.• Th e fi nish matched their fi nishes a year ago.• Eastern’s Karlee Coff ey was second overall in the women’s race.• Boise State, College of Idaho, Eastern Oregon, Northwest Nazarene, and Treasure Valley Community College competed in the meet.• Th e Mountaineer women return 11 runners from last year’s team, while the men bring back 12.• Eastern’s men return one of the seven runners it had on the fi ft h place fi nish at the NAIA Championships.• Eastern’s men opened the season ranked No. 18, while the women were No. 19.• EOU is one of only three Cascade Conference programs running in an event this weekend.• Fellow CCC member, Northwest Christian, has its women’s cross team ranked No. 5 in the NAIA. THE MOUNTAINEERS LAST TIME OUTEOU HARRIERS BEGIN SEASON IN NAMPANov. 10, 2010

NAMPA, Idaho – Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s and men’s cross country teams began their seasons Saturday at the Roger Curran Invitational.

Th e men’s raced fi rst on a slightly modifi ed course just over 6000 meters. Th e EOU men ran well to fi n-ish fourth behind Boise State, a club team and host Northwest Nazarene.

Brian Bragg led the way for Eastern with a 10th place fi nish. His time was 47 second faster than his 2010 time on the course. Isaac Updike came in 21st

place (20:16), he was followed closelyby Brian Nelson (23rd in 20:24).

For the women, course record holder Karlee Coff ey, while hampered by a nagging hip problem, ran con-trolled to fi nish second in 14:59 over the 4000-meter plus route.

Alma Garcilazo ran a strong race to fi nish 15th in 15:55, with Cristal Delgado crossing the line in 23rd in 16:40. Laura Hansen came in 31st (17:09), with Christy Roe rounding out scoring in 42nd (17:45).

Welch enters his 21st year at the helm of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and 2011-12 will mark his 10th year as head coach of track & fi eld team.

In that time, he has guided the men’s team to the NAIA National Cross Country Championships 16 out of the last 20 years, where they have fi nished in the top-20, 14 times and the top-10, eight times, including a second place fi nish in 2002. In 2004 they placed seventh out of the 28 team fi eld. In 1993 and 2000 the men placed sixth, in 1994 they fi nished eighth and 10th in 2001 & 2003.

En route to the national meet, the men have won two NAIA District II Championships and 12 of the last 17 Cascade Conference titles, including the 2007 title. Along the way, the Men’s Cross teams have earned their coach two NAIA District II, 12 Cascade Conference, and four NAIA Regional Coach of the Year honors.

On the women’s side, Welch has guided the team near the top of the NAIA cross-country ranks. In 1995, EOU’S women’s team earned their fi rst national ranking in school history and in 1996 qualifi ed for their fi rst trip to the NAIA National Championships. Th e 1997, 1998 and 1999 teams all advanced to the national meet where they fi nished 6th, 9th, and 3rd, respectively. Along the way, the team won fi ve consecutive Cascade Conference titles from 1995-1999. Th e women’s teams have earned Welch eight conference Coach of the Year awards, one women’s con-ference All-Sport award, and one NAIA National Coach of the Year honor.

In 2004, the women fi nished 16th at the NAIA National Championships aft er a second-place fi nish in the confer-ence that earned Welch his sixth CCC Coach of the Year award. Th ey then followed up with a Conference title, Conference Coach of the Year award, and 22nd place National fi nish in ‘05.

While coaching the women in 07 they also won the con-ference title, earning Welch another CCC Coach of the Year award and the Mountaineers went on to place 22nd at Nationals.

Prior to coming to EOU, Welch spent three years as the men’s cross country and track coach at Highline Com-munity College in Des Moines, Washington and two years at the University of Kansas in Lawrence as a student as-sistant cross country and track coach. Welch and his wife Talia have three children: Amanda, Nick, and Bennett.
