I'm always intrigued by the waysour readers help to promote thecollecting of antique radios. Mike Katzhas found a unique way of promotingour hobby through his local library. He went to 2 libraries in his area andsuggested they do a display of hisradios. Libraries are always looking forthings to promote local citizens. Checkout the article in this issue. It costsnothing and will get you and the hobbynoticed. Congratulations to Mike on anexcellent idea.
The Kutztown Radio Show is nowone of the most popular radio meetson the east coast. It takes place in Mayand September. A.R.C. has a coupleof tables at the meet. One of the nicethings about the meet is how easyit is to work with Renninger's - theorganization that runs the show. Theymake it simple, just sent the moneyfor your table(s) and then show upand have fun! The Delaware ValleyHistorical Radio Club is the sponsor
and holds the auction. The auctioneeris Richard Estes (www.estesauctions.corn). See the photos and auctionresults in this month's issue.
Paul Moens has a nice article thismonth on "The Portables of my Life."Paul looks at some nice portable radioshe has owned like a Continental orRambler. He even is showing hisgrandchildren about technology beforecomputers!
This month we also make a specialvisit to Bonham's Auctions house inNew York City. In December they hada special radio auction of 133 catalinand plastic radios belonging to RichardBalsbaugh. The radios in this auctionsold for between $1500 and $37,500for an Air King Skyscraper! Whilemany of us don't collect this style ofradio we can all appreciate their beauty.
Until next month, happy collecting.

The "Portables" of My LifeBY PAUL R. MOENS
0 ver the years whenever I discussand share my radio collection withothers, the most frequently asked
question is "How long have you been col-lecting radios?" I usually respond "Sincethe 1970s." Actually, I acquired 3 batteryportables much earlier when I was a teen-ager. They are a 1946 RCA Victor model54B3, a 1959 Continental P-50 and a 1964Star-Lite Rambler 6 Transistor.
The Continental was purchased as a giftfrom my father. Mine was red in color. They also came in other colors such asBlack, White, Blue and Green. The RCAwas owned by an elderly gentleman whogave it to my brother who later gave it to me.Both of these radios were somewhat similar. Each used a 1.5 volt "A" battery and a 67.5volt "B" battery, however, the RCA used aNo.467 and the Continental used a No.416.The tube compliment in both was the verycommon IRS, 1T4, 1U5 and 3S4. I honestlybelieve reception was better with the RCA.The biggest shortcoming of both was theCarbon -Zinc 1.5 volt battery during the 50'sand 60's used for the tube filaments. Untilalkaline technology arrived, battery life wasnot that good.
Both were really nice AM radios andeasy to operate. The RCA was unique inthat you turned it on by raising the flip openlid and lowering it to turn it off. It weighsabout'3 1/2 pounds, so some people may notthink of it as a portable. The Continentalhas a collapsible handle and weighs in at 2pounds, made with lighter plastic. My par-ticular RCA was in a maroon simulated al-ligator case. I've heard that other color op-tions existed although I've never seen any.
My Star-Lite Transistor was the first ra-dio I ever purchased. That was in 1964 withmy summer job earnings. It was small, 23/4" X 4" X 1", weighed 9 ounces and wouldeasily fit in a shirt pocket. It was poweredby the very common and affordable 9 voltbattery of the day. There was a fad aboutthat time in that many teenagers carriedtransistor radios with them to school, on thebus, at the beach, everywhere it seemed. I
actually had a better use for my transistorradio. My first car was a 1960 Corvair andit didn't have a radio, but it did have an ashtray on top the dash in the center. If youremoved the ash tray insert, the transistor fitperfectly inside. It was my car radio and Icould listen to music by The Monkees, The

Seekers and other popular artist whenever Iwas driving.
As with most radios of this era, capaci-tors eventually start to fail and restorationis inevitable. I'm fortunate that I turn tomy good friend Dave in Liverpool, NY atDave's Arttique Radio and TV Restorations. He is a service advertiser in ARC and hasbeen in the business over 40 years. He hasrestored both the RCA and the Star-Lite forme. My Continental will be his next resto-ration project. He has a couple of good websites also.
Just before the holidays, I spent an af-ternoon with my two granddaughters,Madison age 6 and Emily age 3, shar-ing my portables with them. I asked bothof them what they thought the RCA was.Their responses were jewelry box, cameracase, lunch box and mini suitcase. WhenI opened the lid and sound emerged, theywere amazed. I explained to them that thisradio was older than Grandpa. Their facialexpressions seemed to indicate that nothingcould be that old! Emily liked the Conti -

nental the best. Madison thought listeningto the transistor radio thru the earphone wasvery "cool." I finally showed them a RadioTube from the 1930's and explained whatthat was. They thought it was a light bulb.As their Grandpa, I enjoyed my "Show andTell' very much.
Radio technology as we know it haschanged many times over the years. Aftertubes, Transistors gave way to Solid State. In fact, radios got larger again before theygot smaller. Remember "Boom Boxes?"Then there was Walkman, Discman, Por-table Music Players, iPods; the list goes on.
My three portables occupy space on mykitchen table and I listen to at least one ofthem with my morning coffee everyday.Because I live in Upstate New York, I wasin the path of Hurricane Sandy's trek up theeast coast this Fall. Facing potential poweroutage and other devastation, I was glad"The Portables of my Life" were still on thejob. I will never part with them.

A "Novel" Way to Promote AntiqueRadio Collecting
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the libraryMike Katz of Long Island, NY hasfound a "novel" way of promotingantique radio collecting as well as
his collection.Within the last year he approached 2 librar-
ies in his area and asked if they would like toset up a display of his radios. Both the Levit-town, NY and Garden City, NY public libraryhave displayed his radios.
Mike simply approached the person whowas in charge of exhibits at the library andthey agreed to display the radios for onemonth. According to Mike, libraries are al-ways looking for new ideas for their exhibits.
Mike has always been a collector and nowhas over 100 radios. He specializes in rare andunusual radios both from the U.S. and manyforeign sets.
Why don't you approach the public libraryin your community? There is a good chancethat they are looking for something new toexhibit.

This does not includethe mounting lugs as I will cut them off. The sec-ond transformer needs to fit into a space of 3 inchesby 2 inches by 2 inches. This does not include themounting lugs as I will cut them off as well. The firsttransformer measures 15 ohms on the orimary and1000 ohms_on thgaggoskry. The second transformermeasures ohms_on_the orimary and 1800 ohms onthe sewn rm. y. Tolerance is +/- 10%. Flying leads.so er tabs, binding posts, solid or stranded leads areall acceptable. Open core, mounted core and pottedtransformers are also acceptable. Original A -K unitswill get top dollar. I intend to sell these to my fellowcollectors if they work well. These transformers arethe missing link for many A -K Model 5 projects. Youmay benefit from my projevor cs. My resultswill be shared with anyone who requests them. Thankyou very much for reading my email. I hope you canhelp my radio come to life and make you some mon-ey doing it! Mark A. Vess, 303 High St., Hanson. MA02341. (781) 294-1647. Free ads are OK via e-mail but for your protection, please use our secure website for longer, paid ads.
Faxed & e -mailed ads: Please see additional information on opposite page. When including ads with other A.R.C. correspondence, write the ads on a separate piece of paper. Include SUB#
with ad. Ads may be sent in advance; but, write each ad on a separate piece of paper and indicate the month (or successivemonths up to your subscription expiration; 12 -months, maximum) you want the ad to run.
To minimize our typing errors: Please write legibly. Use both capital and small letters. Do not use a dash between words.Carefully write the following numbers and letters (especially in model numbers) since some can look alike; for example 1,1andI (the number one, the capital i and the small L.) Also: 0, 0 , o, 0 and D; v, r and n; 6, band G; V, U, u, v and Y; A and R; 5, S
and s; 2, Z and z. We try to correct spelling errors, so when using an uncommon word or manufacturer which we might mistakeas a more common word or manufacturer, note it so that we do not "correct" it. Editor's annotations are in [brackets] in ads.
Advertising is accepted only for early items related to radio, communication, etc. All items must be described fairly;reproductions, reprints and not -original items must be so identified. Advertisers must agree to respond promptly toinquiries and orders, to resolve problems promptly if the buyer is not satisfied, and to comply with a buyer's refundrequest on unaltered returned items.
Classified ads must have a standard heading such as WANTED, FOR SALE, FOR TRADE, FOR SALEITRADE,SERVICES, MESSAGE, HELP, AUCTION, MEET, FREE. This heading is the only bold or all -capitalized words allowed in thead. Capitalize only manufacturer names, model names, etc. This standard ad format makes scanning the ads easier.
Before writing your ad, please look over the ads in a recent issue of A.R.C., and try to write your ad in the same style. Full
name (or company name) and address are rewired in all classified ads; we will add it if you forget. The publisher reserves the right to edit ads without notification to the advertiser and to reject ads for any reason. Names
other than the advertiser will be edited out of ads. Ads with non -radio -related items will be returned or edited unless the non -radio -
related items are for trade of radio -related items, or they are incidental to and appear at the end of an otherwise acceptable ad.The publisher is not responsible for errors due to illegibly written ads or for any other reason. See also Publishing Rights onopposite page.
Clubs: Since club activities receive free coverage on the Coming Radio Events pages, the free 50 words may not be usedfor club activity ads. A discount on display advertising is available for clubs.

These have included both our print subscrib-ers as well as our online edition subscribers. The only difference between the print and onlinesubscribers is that the online subscribers pay areduced subscription rate and don't receive theprint magazine.
Many of the people I spoke with didn't knowabout our subscription benefits.
Let's take a look at them:
