The proceeds from the event — which was a sell-out before it even began — will go to the team’s participation in this fall’s walk. To date, the Cosmic Girls team has raised more than $250,000 for the cause. Focus on the heart on Feb. 16 As matters of the heart take precedence in February, a local cardiologist will get to the heart of matters of the heart on Feb. 16. Dr. Michael Heffernan, a cardiologist with Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), which operates Oakville- Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Milton District Hospital and Georgetown Hospital, will speak about Advances in Cardiac Care. The free, public seminar will take place at 7 p.m. at Southside Community Church in Milton. Hosted jointly by HHS and The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the seminar will open at 6:30 p.m. with displays. Heffernan will take the podium at 7 p.m. His address will be fol- lowed by a question and answer period. Cardiovascular disease is reported as the leading cause of death in Canada. Recent declines in the number of heart attacks and strokes in Canada can be attributed to changing lifestyle patterns, more effec- tive medications, and better treatment strategies that are occurring in this country, according to a release from HHS. Those attending the semi- nar will learn about risk fac- tors and how to improve heart health. Hear about the specific cardiac care advances that have taken place in this com- munity and how the timeli- ness of treatment improves recovery and reduces heart damage.
