Flying Start After a week off from Flying Start, due to the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday, it was great to see many students attend our 6th session for the year. We have 2 more Flying Start sessions this term and another 9 sessions next term. Most students are now feeling rather comfortable in the school environment. They know where the toilets are and where the Kindergarten classroom is situated within the school grounds. They are forming some lovely friendships and getting to know one another well. This week, we counted to 5 through songs, read “The very hungry caterpillar”, and listened to some videos on the Interactive Whiteboard. We used our fingers to represent the numbers we were counting. Our next Flying Start session will be on Monday morning from 9.30am until 11.00am.

Koa Haynes is all rugged up ready to walk back to SDN

Preschool after Flying Start.

Elouise went straight to the easels for painting, after arriving

at Flying Start.

Ginny Webster creatively built a tall structure out of the foam

blocks.

Maaz and Leo are forming a nice friendship after spending

most of the morning sessions with each other.

Halla Price-Jones was impressed with her colouring in of a

truck.

Carter Langdon likes playing with the cars and the car park.

We are all ready to walk to Preschool in the cold weather.

Thanks for another fun session!

Gymnastics Kindergarten and Year 1 enjoy developing their gymnastics skills with Vaughn every Wednesday. This week we practised our balance using the balance beams. It was lots of fun crawling forwards and backwards through the colourful tunnels. We performed handstands with the help of Vaughn, and some of us even learnt how to skip. We look forward to the fun things we’ll learn next week!

Vaughn helps Tommy Dunn perform a handstand.

Aria Bailey waits for her turn in the tunnel.

Oliver Keith’s smiling face emerges from the tunnel.

Jack Frost loves using the balance beam.

Levi Nieves and Alvin Pearson look forward to gymnastics

every week.

TEN Activities in the classroom Students across all stages are actively involved in the Targeting Early Numeracy (TEN) program during their maths lessons. Students focus on identifying numbers, counting, skip counting forwards and backwards and addition and subtraction mental strategies. Materials including dice, cards and dominoes are used to reinforce these strategies. The program motivates and encourages children to engage in mathematics by beginning all lessons with a short and explicit game that aims to develop a specific skill.

Alfie Haynes and Jordan Tate loved 1/2 Kangaroo’s TEN

game this week, ‘2 Dice Subtraction Bingo’.

Procedural writing in 1/2 Emu We have been working hard on writing procedures in 1/2G. On Monday, students collected a variety of natural ‘ingredients’ to make a Bush Stew. Students then planned and wrote a recipe for their own tasty Bush Stew.

Tommy Dunn and Lane Cunningham-Rowell set to work

planning their Bush Stew.

Nathaniel Hockley carefully drafts his recipe.

Gemma Chandler and Briah Cluney attempt to decide

whether or not to cook their stews in the bush or in a kitchen.

Samuel Frost and Tully Price-Jones attempt to figure out

how to turn their leaves, acorns and sticks into a tasty bush stew.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking School Final

Congratulations to all of the primary students in Years 3-6 who have presented their multicultural speech during literacy time over the last two weeks. This year the quality of speeches were outstanding and teachers found it a very difficult task deciding upon who should go through to the school final. Eleven students in total presented their speech in front of a large audience of CPS students and staff on Tuesday afternoon. Evelyn Dark, Anthony Barber, Ruby Butler and George Willis were the finalists from Stage 2. Luke Palmer, Charlie Colley, Issy Cole, Flo Dark, Kiarna McCarten, Annie Knight and Stirling Inder were the finalists from Stage 3. Each student, with growing confidence, highlighted some very important messages about multiculturalism. We applaud their maturity and the effort they all made towards putting together their ideas… some in a very creative way! The two Stage 2 students going through to the regional final at Jerrabomberra on Monday are: Evelyn Dark and George Willis. Charlie Colley and Stirling Inder are the successful finalists from Stage 3. We wish you all the best and are so proud of how far you have come already in the competition. Congratulations school and regional finalists!

The amazing Stage 3 school finalists: Flo Dark, Luke Palmer, Kiarna McCarten, Annie Knight, Charlie Colley, Issy Cole and

Stirling Inder.

The impressive Stage 2 school finalists: Ruby Butler, Evelyn

Dark, Anthony Barber and George Willis.

Congratulations Evelyn, Stirling, Charlie and George who

have progressed to the regional final!

Woodlawn Bioreactor Excursion Stage 3 students and staff had a lovely day visiting the Woodlawn Bioreactor on Wednesday. The Woodlawn site was once a mine which operated from 1978 to 1998 and extracted gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc from deposits formed within the Lachlan Fold Belt.

The mine is now reused with developments in green energy and provides for Sydney's waste disposal. The Woodlawn Bioreactor currently manages around 20% of Sydney’s putrescible waste and captures its emissions to generate clean energy for up to 30,000 homes.

The owners of the mine, Veolia, harvest methane gas and use it for electricity to cut down the greenhouse gas emissions. The company also uses organic waste in the site, once broken down, for fertiliser.

The Woodlawn facility has prioritised sustainable and innovative waste management practices including:

7 landfill gas engines that recover up to 7

megawatts of clean energy from what would otherwise be gas-emitting waste material.

Agriculture incorporating a working farm that

applies nutrient and grazing rotation to help manage and understand impacts on the site.

Aquaculture and horticulture capturing waste

heat from energy production and using it for fish farming and hydroponic horticulture.

Mechanical and Biological Treatment extracting

organic content from the waste to produce compost for environmental rehabilitation.

Windfarm (operated by Infigen Energy) that

harnesses 48.3 megawatts of clean energy per year.

Solarfarm utilising increased sun exposure from

cleared land to produce 2.5 megawatts of clean energy per year.

Many thanks to Veolia for the opportunity to visit the

Woodlawn site and learn more about renewable energy! This is going to help us with our upcoming STEM projects. Thanks for a great day Stage 3, you were all outstanding!

Victa Woods and Thomas Kelly learn about the Woodlawn

site (6 thousand acres worth) from this amazing aerial photograph before venturing outside.

Cody, Charles, Cameron, Keeley and Betsy view their

reflections and the 3D model of the Woodlawn site in the glass cabinet.

Maddy and Abigail connect their learning at Veolia with what

we have been learning at school.

Charlotte and Sophie look at the waste disposal in the ‘void’.

It will only take 35 years to fill this hole with waste.

Charles and Tyler find a large nugget to rest on while they

enjoy the view of wind turbines in the distance.

Ava and Ben visit the Aquaculture and see the barramundi in

the fish farm.

Girls PSSA Hockey Knockout V Bradfordville On Thursday morning, a nervous bunch of Crookwell girls arrive at a frosty Goulburn Hockey field ready for their knockout game against Bradfordville Public School.

From the first whistle, our girls went out in force! Sophie Ward, Emma Robertson and Sianabel Anderson were determined not to let anything past them and played terrific games. Mackenzie Gauci and Isabelle Cole were hungry up front and had several powerful shots at the Bradfordville goalie, making our girls even more determined to score.

Finally, Annie Knight scored a beautiful goal, hitting the ball strongly into the back of the net. A few uneasy minutes were had by our defence, battling strongly, they managed to clear the ball out, thanks to Betsy Willis, Abby Merryfull and Regan Selmes.

At the end of the game, Crookwell had a very exciting 2-0 win! A big thank you to the parents who supported the girls and Mrs Suzie Anderson for her amazing coaching. Congratulations girls on your win and all the best for your next game!

Goal Keeper: Louise Robertson was happy she didn’t have

much work at her end of the field.

Kiarna McCarten takes on the opposition.

The Crookwell team were very strong in the attacking circle.

Proud Winners!

‘We are the World’ - Stage 2 Assembly Item

Last week’s, Stage 2 students shared their ideas of how to make our modern world more sustainable. Students spoke about sustainability on farms including returning nutrients to the soil and planting more trees for wind breaks, as well as to clean the air. Ideas about reducing waste through minimising the use of single use plastics, recycling and up-cycling items were promoted by the students. The item concluded with a rendition of the song ‘We are the World’.

Michael, Elle, Cooper and Mele spoke about planting more

trees to promote sustainability.

Joe, Montanna, Poppy and Alyssa taught us how the fashion

industry can contribute to the environment through using sustainable materials such as bamboo.

Erik Skelly and Alex Anderson want to be farmers in the

future.

Earn & Learn Returns Woolworths are running Earn & Learn again this year between 1 May and 25 June. If you spend money at Woolworths during this period don’t forget to collect the stickers. Sticker sheets can be collected from the office for you to fill up and return to the school. The more stickers we get, the more equipment we can buy.

Pyjama Day – Year 6 Fundraiser! On the very last day of term, Friday 5th July, Year 6 is hosting a pyjama day! All students and staff are invited to wear their warmest pyjamas to school for the day and bring along a gold coin donation. Please remember to wear appropriate footwear that is covered and has strong soles for the playground. Dressing gowns, bed socks and teddy bears are all acceptable! The monies raised will go towards Year 6 camp. We hope you will support us and join in on our fun! Thank you, Year 6 Fundraising Committee

Home and Emergency Contact Details The colder weather has now set in and the chance of having to evacuate the school due to heavy snow or extreme weather increases. It is important that we have current contact details in case of an emergency. If you have recently changed your mobile phone number, changed address or any other emergency contact details please contact the office and have these details updated as soon as possible.

Some Benefits of Regular School Attendance

For Students:

The development of skills and attitudes such as self-discipline, punctuality, and being organised will optimise life choices.

Regular attendance leads to making friends and learning how to maintain relationships over a length of time.

Regular attendance leads to learning social skills necessary to live and work with others.

It’s safer at school than on the street.

The more students attend, the more they will learn and the more they will like school.

How many days of school has your child missed this term?

Book Club Issue 4 We have received two orders for this issue that have no name on the order form. If you did an order for $37 or $15 could you please contact the front office and leave your details with them and we will get in contact with you to confirm. Once these orders are confirmed they will be ordered but they will arrive separately from the rest of the schools order.

School readiness talk If you are unsure if your child is ready to commence to next year, in 2020, please come along to a school readiness talk by our Kindy teachers, Miss O’Neill and Ms Caffery. The talk will be held at Crookwell SDN Preschool at 3.30pm until 4.00pm on Wednesday 3rd July 2019. We will be discussing how to know when your child is ready to commence school and what to do to prepare them.

2019 Semester 1 Reports – An Explanation Dear Parents/Carers,

On Monday 24th June reports are being sent home for each student. Each year we refine our reports to suit not only changes in curriculum, but also acting on feedback from staff and parents. Our reports must adhere to departmental guidelines in many respects.

One of the main focuses for our staff is to ensure consistency with our assessing and reporting. Our teachers have spent many sessions working together to analyse student work samples and evaluate the levels of achievement. Students are tracked on syllabus outcomes in order to identify where each child sits at this point in time for the grade expectations. These identify what the expected outcomes are for students by the end of the semester. Teachers can then determine the level of achievement for every student.

OVERALL LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT

Kindergarten – Year 6 reports:

The Department of Education mandates that all student reports are to use a standard achievement rating scale. Below is our interpretation and how we will report to our families:

Outstanding Achievement For a student to attain Outstanding they would have an extensive knowledge and understanding of

the content and readily be able to apply this to other areas. They would be working on an individualised or adjusted learning program and be achieving well beyond stage level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be

working at and achieving at Year 4 or higher).

High Achievement For a student to attain High they would have a thorough knowledge and understanding of content.

The student would be working at and achieving above grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be

working at and achieving at Year 3 level).

Sound Achievement Students achieving Sound are working at achieving at their appropriate grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they

are working at and achieving at Year 2 level). It is the expected level of achievement according to the

child’s grade.

Basic Achievement For a student to receive Basic they would have a basic

knowledge of the content and be working at and achieving below grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be working at

and achieving a Year 1 level).

Limited Achievement For a student to receive Limited they would have a very limited knowledge of content covered and be working at and achieving well below grade level, even at an earlier stage

(i.e. if in Year 4 they would be working at and achieving at Year 2 or lower).

Parents should note that a ‘sound’ grade is a good grade! It means that your child is working where they should be at this point in time.

EFFORT

All students will also receive an effort rating for each subject area. Effort reflects how well a student has tried, the persistence and determination to achieve at the best level of which they are capable. Effort will be rated as:

5 – Excellent 4 - Very Good 3 - Acceptable 2 - Needs Improving 1 - Little/No Effort

I trust that this has provided you with some explanation of what to expect when sharing reports with your children. Any parents wishing for further clarification are most welcome to contact the school.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Class teachers are busily preparing student progress reports. These reports will be posted home on Monday 24th June, 2019 and will form the basis of the parent/teacher interview discussions which will occur on:-

Mon. 1st July from 9.00am to 6.00pm for parents of Year 5/6 Dingo, 5/6 Kookaburra and 5/6 Magpie students.

Tues. 2nd July from 9.00am to 6.00pm for parents of children in classes 3/4 Koala and 3/4 Echidna.

Wed. 3rd July from 9.00am to 6.00pm for parents of children in classes 1/2 Kangaroo, 1/2 Platypus and 1/2 Emu.

Thurs. 4th July from 9.00am to 6.00pm for parents of children in Kindergarten.

The timetabled 10-15 minute interviews will be conducted in the school library until 6.00pm.

When you receive your child’s report you will notice that the report format has changed this year. We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the changes we have made. There will be a short survey that we would like parents to complete at Parent/Teacher interviews in relation to the new report format. We thank you in advance for your participation in the survey.

Enrolling Now For 2020

If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2020 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form promptly. This will allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

Some teachers taught the curriculum today,

other teachers taught students today.

There’s a big difference!

Staffing arrangements for Terms 3 & 4 Mrs Jade Bell will be beginning maternity leave in Term 3 and will be enjoying time with her baby, when he or she arrives, until next year. We implemented an Expression of Interest process to identify who could take Mrs Bell’s class for the remainder of the year and also fill the role of Relieving Assistant Principal (Primary). I am very happy to say that Mr Greg Atfield will be replacing Mrs Bell for the remainder of the year in these roles. He is more than qualified for this role with over 40 years of teaching experience and we will benefit as a school with his knowledge and experience on hand. All other staff members will continue as normal.

K-2 Excursion to Canberra Theatre 06/09/2019 On Friday 6th September 2019, students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be travelling to Canberra Theatre to

watch the live production of ‘Possum Magic’. For more

than 30 years, Mem Fox’s Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people all over Australia.

Students will be leaving school at approximately 9:30am and returning to school by 4pm. This will not be in time for

students to catch the bus home, alternate arrangements need to be organised to collect students from the school at 4pm. Children will need to bring a packed recess and lunch in separate plastic bags clearly labelled with their names.

Disposable drink containers are a handy idea on this excursion. We will be eating our packed lunch at Commonwealth Park at Lake Burley Griffin.

The total cost for this excursion is $50.00 per child. This includes the theatre ticket and bus fare. To assist parents in making the payment for this excursion, a payment plan has been set up:

First Instalment of $20.00 per child is due on Today!

Second Instalment of $15.00 per child is due on 5th July.

Last Instalment of $15.00 per child is due on 2nd August.

Alternatively you may choose to pay the $50 in full by the 2nd August. If there are any questions relating to this excursion please feel free to contact the school or come and talk to one of the K-2 staff members.

Many thanks, K-2 Teachers - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
