On 8 June I will be running my 100th official marathon, which will be a trail marathon of 30 miles organised by the LDWA (Long Distance Walk Association) at Sheringham called the "Poppy Line Marathon", normally 26 miles but this year, to celebrate the 30th year of the event, the course will be extended to 30 miles taking in Felbrigg Park, Holt Country Park, Sheringham Park and the cliff tops from Weybourne to Sheringham. I am hoping that some fellow runners from my local running club the North Norfolk Beach Runners will be joining me on the day - I know quite a few have signed up already. I still have number 99 to go as well which is going to be the "Dukeries 40" a 40 mile ultra in and around Sherwood Forest, on11May - this will be my 9th marathon this year. 100th Marathon SupportsNelson’s JourneyContinued from front cover...

My total of 98 so far is made up of 57 marathons (26.2m) and 41 ultramarathons ranging from 30 miles up to 145 miles. I have run marathonsup and down the country, in London, Edinburgh, Loch Ness, Bungay,Halstead, Northumberland , Portsmouth and even around a 400mtr athletics track in Crawley. I have also run some crazy long distanceraces such as Caesers Camp, an off road 100mile race of 10x10 milelaps on army training land in Hampshir, taking in the equivalent heightof three Ben Nevis's. The longest race I have done is the Grand UnionCanal race, a 145 mile nonstop race from Birmingham to London alongthe canal towpath. The most I have done in a year was 21 in 2011 andmy quickest time was at London 2013 when I managed to finish in 3 hours 15 mins and 26 seconds.

Once I have completed the marathon on 8 June, I will be able to wearthe club colours of the 100 Marathon Club (an official UK running clubdedicated to people who have run 100 official marathons or ultras (ultrasonly count as one, no matter how many miles).

I have chosen to use this to also raise some money for Nelson’s Journeywho have recently helped members of my extended family with their excellent support. Nelson's Journey is a registered charity providing aservice for children and young people aged 0-17 years inclusive, livingin Norfolk, who have experienced the death of a significant person intheir life such as a parent or sibling. They aim to improve the emotionalwellbeing of bereaved children by: increasing their confidence and self belief, providing education about the causes of death and enablingfamilies to talk openly about their bereavement. Based in Norwich, theywere founded in 1997, since which time they have helped hundreds ofchildren.

Farewell Dave & LouiseIt is with some sadness that we must announce The Jetty Café will bechanging hands. We wouldn’t have missed the last two and a half yearsfor the world. However, it feels like the right time for a change, and weare looking forward to moving on and pursuing new challenges.

Thank you to all our supporters, casual and regular. Without you, there’dhave been no plaudits, no accolades, no popularity transmitted by wordof mouth. We have thoroughly enjoyed being able to build ties with somany of you, here in the Cromer community and beyond. Indeed, wehave made friendships while running the café that we will carry with uswell into the future.

We would like to say a huge ‘Thank you!’ to our regular suppliers, without whom we simply could not have succeeded as we did. Majorthanks to Icarus Hines, Cromer Farm Shop, Brays Cottage, NVCS, Dudley’s Bakery and Davies’ Fish Shop.

And to all the other great cafés and restaurants in Cromer, thank youtoo, for making sure we always kept our standards high. We still feel, as we have always felt, that the friendly competition was good for us,and good for Cromer.

We wish the new owners every success. They are adamant that they will be making very few changes to the way the café operates. Even theloyalty card scheme will be continuing uninterrupted. The lovely Esmeand Hayley who have worked so hard with us and made the café a special place to visit will be staying to work with the new café team.

We urge you to give the new owners your support, and keep visiting theJetty Café. We certainly shall. Perhaps we may see you there.

REGULAR EVENTS

This month sees the return of the ever-popularCromer Carnival Art Week. From 23 – 28 Maythe Parish Hall will host the exhibition ofpaintings, crafts and photography, to view, enjoy and buy.

The exhibition will celebrate over 400 worksof art and craft by over 90 artists and sevenschools and community groups and is a wonderful celebration of local creativity.

The event is one of the early highlights inCromer Carnival’s calendar which is now in its 45th year.

With over 90 artists and numerous communitygroups taking part it is clear to see that north

Norfolk is a hive of culture with applicationscoming from across the region.

Most items are available for sale and proceedsgo to Cromer Carnival.

Chairman Tony Shipp said “Art Week is one of the longest running events in the Carnivalcalendar. It was already up and running whenCromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisationtook Carnival on back in the early 1970s. We have continued to try and make it a shopwindow for local art groups and artists bothnew and established an over the years we havealso seen the addition of a growing number ofexcellent quality craft stalls. It also has the

added attraction ofwork done by ourlocal schools andyouth groups and thisyear there will be a shield, for the best display as decided by our judge for this year, Gita Dickinson.”

The exhibition is open Friday 23 – Wednesday 28 May, every day from 10.30am – 5.30pm apartfrom Sunday 25 May (2.30pm – 5.30pm)and Wednesday 28 May (10.30am until5.00pm).

We have had a very busy spring and are looking forward to a great summer of sunshine and great food. We are planing ournew menus and wine list so that we can ring the changes and follow our policy of only serving fresh produce from ourlocal suppliers.

The White Horse is now the home for Overstrand Together the new funding raising group set up earlier this year to raisefunds for the village as well as creating a number of fun events that we hope everyone will support. One of the alreadyplanned events is the White Horse Car Wash on Saturday 12th July 8am - 2pm. It’s just £5 per car with all the money raised going to Overstrand Together. And while you wait for your car to be washed you can enjoy a tasty bacon roll or slice of cake served with tea or coffee. The day is alwaysgreat fun with villagers and locals all gathering to have their cars washed and if the weather is fine sitting together chatting while watching the volunteer car washers work on their vehicles.

It's taken the owner of the Ship Inn at Mundesley less than ayear to return the Ship to its historic roots. Since taking overin April last year, the almostderelict rooms, not used for thelast 15 to 20 years, which oncehoused holiday makers or wearytravellers, have been transformed into modern guest rooms. The Ship Inn can boast of being one of the oldest Inns in Norfolk, with well over 200years of history trading as a pub orhotel or combinationof both andof course its seasidelocation hasalways madeit a popularvenue forvisitors looking for a holiday beside the sea.

Now the excellent restaurant, catered for byhead chef Aiden and his staff, can handle 200

diners in an evening, features a large bar and function room - for weddings orprivate parties in fact all occasions.

And of course they use thevery best local produce.

They have a substantialstaff and that makes surethat their guests receivethe very best of customerservice.

Owner George commented, "We are already filling our reservations for the mainpart of the summer, and

the response so far from our guestshas been very positive. We havemodernised our guest rooms, but the

Ship overall retains its old worldcharm and its great location."

George continued, "Most of therooms have spectacular seaviews, asthe Ship is so close to the beach thatif you step out of the garden you'reon sand. Most are also en-suite too.All have been kitted with pine furniture and TVs with Freeview."

Four Beeston Hall School boys go Barefootfor the day to raise awareness of the plightof millions of children who have no shoesto wearOn Tuesday 29April four BeestonHall School pupilsdecided to go without wearingshoes at school forthe whole day tohelp support ‘OneDay WithoutShoes’.

The four Year 6boys Dougie, Anamu, Ned and Bertie, read about how millions of children around the world live in poverty and don’t own a single pair of shoes. Many suffer from diseases that could easily be prevented bywearing shoes. For example, in Ethiopia and at least 14 other countries, more than four million people suffer from a painful disease calledpodoconisis. This disease causes extreme swelling of the feet and legsand is caused by an irritant in the soil.

The boys joined people worldwide who went without shoes to highlightthe important issue of children who are growing up without a single pairof shoes to wear.

Every year, One Day Without Shoes calls on people to join them in taking off their shoes for a day to raise awareness of the issues faced by those who don’t own a simple pair of shoes.

At the end of their day without shoes the boys were very relieved thatthey are lucky enough to be able to wear shoes.

‘We had to be very careful about where we walked and our feet were really cold by the end of the day’, explained Dougie.

The Sheringham Players go“ON THE RAZZLE”To celebrate their 50th anniversary The Sheringham players will stageTom Stoppard’s masterpiece ’ON THE RAZZLE’ directed by JuneCooper assisted by Julian High (both founder members of The Sheringham Players).

June Cooper together with otheryoung, enthusiastic actors (includingJulian) formed The Sheringham Players in 1964 with a production of Noel Coward’s ‘Blythe Spirit’.Little did they realise that 50 yearson they would still be producingplays. Their aim has always been toentertain local audiences and visitorswhose loyal support has ensuredtheir survival.

‘ON THE RAZZLE’ – a prime example of Tom Stoppard’s mastery offarce and language consists of two hours of slapstick, shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendresand romantic complications. Set in Vienna in the 1880s and packed fullof laughter it promises to be an unmissable production.

The Sheringham Players invites you to join in their celebration of 50 years of theatre between the 11th and 14th June at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre.

Tickets are now on sale at £10 (to include a special souvenir programme) and are selling fast. To book ring the box officeat Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or book onlineat www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Cromer and Sheringham Probus ClubAt the May meeting last year, we invited ladies as guests to one of ourspeaker lunches for the first time and it proved to be very popular. Wedid it again this year and it was another success.

A total attendance of 50 members and guests enjoyed the three courselunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton. This was followed by a thoroughly entertaining performance by Greg Powles, who gave us a marvellously energetic account of some of his experiences behind the scenes in cinema, theatre and radio broadcasting. There were somedigressions and his one-man Norfolk version of Romeo and Juliet was a particular joy to witness.

Our next meeting on 3 June will not feature a speaker, as lunch will be followed by the AGM. The usual monthly meetings will resume fromthe first Tuesday of July along with the new programme of talks.

The club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.

Openwide Coastal have taken delivery of a smart new temporary Box Office while the repair work continues on Cromer Pier after thestorm surge last December. Councillor GlynWilliams Cabinet Member responsible forLeisure and Cultural Services officially openedthe temporary office on Saturday 3 May.

Also on hand to help celebrate the openingwere members of the Cromer and SheringhamOperatic and Dramatic Society (CSODS)whose soon to open run of Oliver will be one of the first to benefit from the new Box Office. Marlene’s School of Dance were alsorepresented by children from the various Saturday classes, some of whom will be hopingto perform in this year’s Cromer Pier Showwhen it opens for the summer run on 21 June. This year’s show has an all new cast and promises to return to the more traditionalroutes of Seaside Special bringing plenty ofmusic comedy, song and dance and of coursethe first half finale with children from Marlene’s School of Dance.

To help the celebration along members of theOperatic Society brought along a cake to sharewith those attending the opening. Ruth Elliott, one of the publicity team from CSODS said‘It’s wonderful to have the Box Office back atthe land end of the pier. Our tickets sales aredoing extraordinarily well and having the box

office at this location willmake booking tickets mucheasier for everyone. Wehave had a very long andhappy relationship withPavilion Theatre and lookforward to continuing thatrelationship long into thefuture. Our first show at thetheatre was in 1952, wethen missed two years because of the Great Stormof 1953 so this occasion inour 100th year of the Society makes this occasion rather special’.

Commenting on the Box Office, CouncillorGlyn Williams said ‘The Property team atNNDC is hoping to have the repair works tothe shop, office and restaurant area completedbefore the schools break up for the main summer season."

There was more good news for staff membersof the Cromer Pier this month when they received a Commendation award from theMayor and members of Cromer Town Council. The award was presented in recognition of thevalued and outstanding contribution to thecommunity of Cromer in getting the Pier andPavilion Theatre up and running so quicklyafter the December storm surge so that

When cats come into care we hope that they will soon find new homesbut unfortunately this is not always the case. Some cannot be put up foradoption straight away for various reasons. This may be because theyhave not been socialised properly before they come into care or theymay have a health issue which needs to be resolved before they go onour website. Cats like Smudge, a lovely grey and white boy. He cameinto care with companion Mitzy as, when his owner split with her partner, she left the cats behind. They had been fed and had shelter butwere not wanted and, when they arrived after a year without any lovingcare, Smudge in particular was a very stressed cat. Although the older ofthe two cats, Mitzy soon settled and left us for a new home some timeago, Smudge took longer to learn to trust his fosterer but finally wasready to receive a thorough examination at the vets where it was discovered he needed a dental as his teeth and gums needed attention. As his fosterer volunteers at his vets she was able to be there whenSmudge had his operation and said his mouth was in an awful state. She cannot believe the difference thishas made as he is now so much friendlier and it is obvious thatSmudge is now a much happier cat.Because we are happy that he is readyfor a new home, we will be puttinghim on our website so that people cansee what a handsome lad he is andhopefully he will soon find a lovingnew home.

Other cats tend to remain with uslonger than normal, although it is not

always obvious why they get over-looked. Working with the cats, we tendto judge them by their temperamentand character rather than the colour orlength of their coat and often find our“favourite” is still with us while his/herfriends have left. Cats like Horatio, Fernie, Dash, Summer and her daughterSquall, have all been with us some timeand are really delightful cats to lookafter. However, like recent residentsBentley, Magic and dear little Bijouthey too will find new homes, giventime.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on01692 535858, or visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on theabove number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

The campaign to build a skate park in Cromercontinues to gain momentum. Two highly successful events over the last two weeks haveadded significantly to the campaign’s coffers, and brought it that much closer to achieving itsstated aim of enabling construction work tobegin later this year...

On Friday 2 May, a large crowd of musiclovers of all ages packed into Cromer Community Centre for a gig by local iconsthe Sweetbeats, an eight-piece dancehall bandspecialising in the melodic, soulful groove ofrocksteady ska.

The evening began with an opportunity to learnsome of the original dance moves from the1960s and ’70s,courtesy of Marlene’s School of Dance. By thetime the Sweetbeatshit the stage, thejoint was alreadyjumping, and energylevels remainedhigh throughout theevening. The bandplayed two extended sets, andthe experience wasaugmented by visuals in the formof films. A DJ kept the crowd dancing betweensets. The bar did a roaring business, with anexclusive Caribbean punch proving a particularhit with the punters. For those seeking a less alcoholic source of energy, Bray’s Cottage pork pies and homemade chocolate browniesconstituted further highlights.

The gig was the brainchild of ‘Cromer SocialServices’, a group of Cromer residents unitedby the common aims of organising socialevents in the town while trying to raise moneyfor good causes at the same time. Despite thisbeing the group’s inaugural event, it was aroaring success. The evening realised profits ofover £800, which the group has donated to avery grateful Cromer Skate Park campaign.Cromer Social Services expressed their sinceregratitude to the Sweetbeats, who made it anight to remember for all who were there. They also extended thanks to the various localbusinesses and organisations that showed faithin their new venture, and so helped to make itall possible – Co-operative Food, Marlene’sSchool of Dance, Morissons, Bray’s CottagePork Pies, the Jetty Café, Wet Dog and theLighthouse Community Association.

Little more than a week later, the Cromer SkatePark committee hosted a quiz night in supportof the campaign. On the evening of Saturday10 May, some 100 people, organised into 19teams of up to six people each, filed in to theParish Hall on Church Street in Cromer to dobattle.

The quiz was devised and presented with greatpanache by Steve Downes. The scores were

recorded by Steve’s wife Yoly, who surrendered her place inone of the teams in orderto fulfil this crucial role.

During the interval, morethan three-quarters of theattendees took advantageof the opportunity toenjoy delicious fish and chips from MaryJane’s Fish Bar. Young committee members BenGasse Coope, Joe GasseCoope and Adam Spruce, together with their friendsZeke and Noah Downes, collectively made up

‘Pepsi Sprite’, theyoungest team in theevent. The five boys beetled round to therestaurant to collect themeals, and return them tothe waiting quiz teams.

At the end of an extremely enjoyableevening, the winners wereannounced as ‘Linford'sQuiz Team’ – a team thatjust happened to includethe Vice Chair of the committee! The

runners-up were ‘Let's Get Quizzical’. Poor ‘Pepsi Sprite’were last, despitehaving excelled during the ‘textacronyms’ round. However, they wereawarded consolationprizes of chocolate aswell as the customarywooden spoons!

The evening offeredthe opportunity forthe campaign to raffle many prizesleft over from theCharity Ball held in March this year.Once again, the committee extends itsthanks to all thoselocal businesses whogenerously donatedprizes.

The night’s entertainment raiseda profit of £304 towards the CromerSkate Park campaign, but this was boostedto £531, due to a generous and entirelyunexpected donationof £227 by GrantZelos, the owner ofMary Jane's Fish Bar.

The committee would like to thank Grant forthis great show ofpublic spirit, whichturned what wouldhave been merely avery good night forthe campaign into anexceptional one.

The Cromer SkatePark campaign is aregistered charity, with the specific aimof providing a skatepark in Cromer forthe young people of

the area. These are particularly exciting timesfor the campaign. A site has been acquired, anda design for the skate park has been drawn up.The campaign is now very close to having thetotal funding required, and anticipates beingable to start constructing the skate park withinthe next few months.

Nevertheless, new participants are always verywelcome. Could you be one of the people tohelp the campaign, even in a very modest way,on its last few steps to success? If so, pleasecontact the committee via any of the following: www.cromerskatepark.co.ukFaceBook: Cromer Skate ParkTwitter: @CromerSkateparkTelephone: 01263 511724

Richard Howitt, the Labour MEP for the East ofEngland, has backed calls for more EU money to be made available for coastal defences in thefuture, and criticised the UK Government for not claiming in time EU solidarity money made available for Norfolk immediately after the flooding.

He was recently given a tour of parts of the NorthNorfolk coast and met residents still suffering following last year's devastating floods.

Following the floods, North Norfolk Labour Partylaunched the 'Protect Our Coast' petition callingon the Environment Agency to reinstate and improve coastal defences.

Richard and North Norfolk Labour’s parliamentary candidate Denise Burke were shown the erosion

that led to a Happisburgh house falling into thesea last December.

Mr Howitt said “Climate change is not just anidea for Happisburgh and North Norfolk, it issomething that is happening to them right now.Coastal erosion has a devastating effect on communities such as this, and Europe needs to make more help available.

“Local communities rallied together after thefloods, and I was one of the first donors to theEDP’s flood appeal, but I was shocked that theUK Government refused to put in a claim for EUmoney made available to help flood victims.

“With less money made available for councils tohelp prevent coastal erosion, and with cuts to

flood defencesfrom the EnvironmentAgency highlighted byNorth NorfolkLabour’s“Protect our Coast”campaign, Europe has a real opportunity to makea difference in coastal towns and villages.

“I will continue to fight for EU money to be madeavailable to make these communities sustainablefor years to come.”

Norfolk pupil reaches finals of a national song writing competitionRomy Sipek, a Year 8 pupil at Gresham’s Prep School inHolt has just been named as one of the finalists in a nationalsong writing competition with her song, Devil from Above. As a result, Romy who is one of 10 finalists in the 7-12 yearold category of the Young Songwriter Competition 2014,will perform with a professional band at the Song Academy showcase in London in June 2014.

The national competition which is now in its third year is an exciting platform for aspiring young songwriters to havetheir songs heard by industry professionals, with an opportunity to release their own single. Director of Music,Nathan Waring said, “Romy has shown considerable flair asa singer/songwriter since her early days at Gresham’s Pre-Prep. She regularly performs her ownmusic, accompanying herself on the piano or guitar in school concerts and I’m thrilled that shehas now achieved some national recognition for her talent.”

Romy wrote her first song when she was 10 years old and has written six songs to date. She iscurrently working on her seventh song! Her musical influences are electronic chart music and she also likes Taylor Swift.

Having received the news of her selection Romy said "It's always been a dream of mine to be a songwriter. I didn't expect to make the final but now I have, I'm very excited".

The judging panelwhich includes suchsongwriters as JamieScott (One Direction), DebbieWiseman MBE, Rob Davis (KylieMinogue) and producers Lyn Goddard and DenzylFeigelson (AppleiTunes), will shortlybe choosing the winner of the competition who willget to record theirsong at a Londonrecording studio.

Eg White, British musician, songwriter and producer and best known for his work with Duffy and Adele commented “Normally upon listening to the results of a song writing competition, what comes across is howthe competitors are trying to write commercial sounding music or impress with their cleverness orcatchiness, but listening to these songs, I just really enjoyed the music, and could actually feel thepeople behind the songs, which has to be pretty close to the whole point of writing!”

To listen to the songs by the 2014 finalists visit the website at www.songacademy.co.uk/says14where Romy Sipek’s composition, Devil from Above is featured.

People walking into Cromer Parish Churchwere met with the exciting sounds from thisvery talented jazz ensemble as they "warmedup" in preparation for the evening concert, having been invited to play by Rotary as acomplete change from the usual organ concerts- an experiment which was certainly justified.

Under the direction of Josh Daniels, being thesuccessor to Dave Amis, the founder of theNorwich Students Jazz Orchestra, they performed a programme of exciting jazz idioms from swing to rock, Latin American and blues.

To witness such expertise from these youngmusicians was very impressive. Every

instrumentalist had a very short improvisatoryslot and matched the demands of this skill, announcing in turn each number to be played. Here, it must be said, that the microphone technique was not good, coupled with no programmes being issued, it was difficult to ascertain the composers and arrangers of themusic played. It would have been good if JoshDaniels had been free to "front" the band - hadhe not been busy playing the bass parts on keyboard!

Dave Amis was guest artist on this occasion, playing with the band an arrangement ofAmazing Grace - displaying his improvisatoryqualities in both Amazing Grace and a piece in

Blues Idiom.

The female vocalist seemed confident in holding her own against a skilful obbligato by Dave Amis and a subdued accompanimentfrom the band in performing "It’s only a PaperMoon".

The audience responded at the close with prolonged applause in appreciation, not only ofthe instrumental skills each player obviouslyhad, but of the enthusiasm and confidencewhich was evident throughout the concert, probably the first ever jazz concert in CromerParish Church.

Patricia Williams, on behalf of Rotary, thankedthe orchestra, Josh Daniels and the audiencefor what proved to be a most enjoyableevening, declaring that proceeds from thisevent will augment the local community pot tobe distributed to various causes.

Dear Margaret,Thank you for advertising the fundraising afternoon tea on Saturday 24 May.Unfortunately due to an unforeseen family situation (nothing todo with Ella-grace) we have to cancel. We are hoping it may be possible to fit another date in towardsJune but this remains to be seen.

Yours sincerely,Kelly Leeder

Dear Margaret,I am pleased to see that the Labour Party's petition for later trains to and from Norwich in the evenings has reignited a debate on public transport here in North Norfolk. Over 500 people have now signed the petition online atwww.leavelater.info because they recognise both the benefits topassengers and to the local night-time economy. It is good to hear that Greater Anglia are considering timetabletweaks but we do not think this goes far enough. Many who have signed the petition would like to see trains rununtil midnight rather than the present 10.45pm time. We haveheard from passengers who attend shows at Cromer Pier who alsowould like to see trains beyond 8pm on a Sunday evening. There are passengers who want to see a better deal for those trav-elling to Worstead and Gunton too. This passenger input should be crucial in deciding future rail con-tracts, and also when drawing up bus timetables in and out of thecity too. By making these adjustments we will encourage more togive up their cars to use public transport.

Yours sincerely,Jono Read, Press Officer for North Norfolk Labour

Dear Margaret,May we through The Cromer Times say that the sum raised at the MS Coffee Morning at Thorpe Market Church raised £377.80. Many thanks to all who donated, helpedand bought.

Yours sincerely,Mandy Hayward and Hazel Patrickson

Cromer WIMay is always our resolution meeting and the meeting was opened with plenty of lively discussionover the proposal of “Organ Donation”. We want theWI to make friends and relatives aware of our

wishes regarding organ donation. Coral Batchelor, our Advisor from theFederation Office in Norwich, came along and guided us through thesystem. We voted for the Resolution and it will now go forward to ourAnnual Meeting in Leeds in June.

Next month members will be going on a river trip in Norwich and inSeptember we hope to get a trip arranged to Sandringham.

Our competition was a jar of homemade lemon curd and Coral enjoyedtasting them all before declaring Val Lodge as the winner. Hazel Patrickson and Jill Jessop were a close second and third.

Maureen Strong had just celebrated a very special birthday and she waspresented with a plant arrangement.

Our speaker in June is Esme Wilson-Staniforth on Massage and Aromatherapy. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

…where the league season has started. In the Federation County league theCrabs were at home to Sheringham Morley and started off the season with a

very good 7 – 2 win. The following week however they could not keep up the good work andon a green new to most of the players, Swanton Morley, they crashed to a 0 – 9 defeat. TheCrows playing away at Aylsham for their first game had a very close encounter which theyjust lost 4 – 5. The next game at home to Blakeney saw a reversal of fortunes however and anexcellent 5 – 4 win. The Wednesday evening team in the Hansells County League played athome against Reepham Nomads and managed a very good 4 – 1 win. This against the teamthat finished last season second in the league only one point the behind the eventual winnersR G Carter .A’. The next game away to County Arts ‘B’ in Norwich however was a differentstory. The team had some difficulty getting to grips with the running of the green, and despitetwo rinks each coming within a few shots of their opponents the overall result was a 0 – 5 defeat. The NANSA League game due to be played had to be cancelled as unfortunately theopposition were unable to raise a team. As you will gather the scoring system is different forthe various leagues, but I will not go into detail about that as it’s the final result that matters.Vice President Keith held another well supported Spoon Drive on a vacant Saturday. It’s goodto see members old and new joining in these friendly competitions. On Friday 23rd May theclub is involved in the Lord Fermoy Cup. This competition is one where one rink of four menplay at home and another rink of four play away on the opponents green. The opposition inthis case being Martham BC. Both rinks play 21 ends and it is the aggregate score over thetwo games that decides the winner. In what is an amazing coincidence the ladies of the clubalso meet Martham BC in their own version of a similar competition The Webb Trophy. Theywill be playing their games on Wednesday 28th May in the afternoon. In another competitionon Friday 30th May the club have been drawn away to Aylsham BC in the Bales Cup. Bothteams play 3 rinks of men, the overall number of shots scored decides the winner. This is thecounty Club Championship in which historically the club has a good record, but not I have tosay in recent years. So Captain Graham will be looking to his team to progress this year albeitthat the team is playing away. In yet another county competition the club will be at home onSunday 1st June against Aldiss Park BC in the Jermy Cup. This is a mixed competition, twomen and two ladies in each of three rinks. The overall shots scored again decide the winner.

As usual the morning club roll ups continue and I remind you that the free Friday evenings on the green are available for anyone who would like to come along and try out the game. Remember “Don’t Say No Before You Have Had a Go”.

And so to that list of the matches being played on the green that you may wish to come andwatch, and support.
