The breathtaking display saw over 500 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in the country’s biggest New Year’s Day firework show. The event attracted thousands of people on a wet and windy day which saw a clear and dry spell for the dazzling evening display. Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 15 minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea. Clive Casburn from Premiere Fireworks said “the display has become for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier has proved a marvellous setting, by rigging the whole length of the pier the show can be seen all along the shoreline. Also, by suspending material from the pier, it adds another dimension to the display. The use of aquatic fireworks, surprises the audience every year. The reflections of the fireworks in the sea create a really unbelievable atmosphere”. Continued on page 5... A Dazzler of a Display

A Dazzler of a Display“We take great pride in firing this show, which helps in bringing a realcelebration to the town and North Norfolk, to welcome in the NewYear.”

This year’s display was specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, representing poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100thanniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914. Onevisitor said “It is a lovely start to 2014, and the raft of red lanterns at theend was just beautiful.”The afternoon’s activities began with a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners, which saw 18 brave people line up to run amile along Cromer’s recently storm battered promenade. The race waswon by Catherine Longe from Holt in a time of 7mins 24secs.

Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said "This year’s showwas as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have beenplanning and building the show over the last few months and producedeffects that lit up the skies and sea in a variety of colours.” Local attractions and traders opened up their shops, eateries, museumsand businesses on what is now one of the town’s busiest days of theyear.

Thorpe Market ChurchThe Craft Fair event held on 16/17 November raised £293.08 for churchfunds. The Tastes, Smells & Sights of The Holy Land presentation on 23 November given by Janet Balfour raised £70 for the benefit of thechildren of Bethlehem.Thank you to all who attended.

Is your Tattoo stopping youfrom moving forward inlife?Would you like to have it removed in a painless, scar less way withthe latest technology?

Look no further - the answer is right here…

In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It isestimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them re-moved within 10 years of their application. Tattoos can have negativeassociations and can be a hindrance in obtaining certain jobs. Whateverthe reason, the best technology for tattoo removal in now available.

Coltishall Clinic is very pleased to announce the arrival of a new state-of-the-art q-switched ruby laser from polaris medical. It is a heavy machineweighting at 125 lbs and taller than most of us with its articulated laserarm. It is very expensive too but we believe in offering only the best. And when it comes to laser tattoo removal-shortcuts are simply not worth it!

The market has been flooded with cheap poorly tested laser devices in recent years. We have seen more injuries, inadequate treatments and even keloid scars after tattoo removals attempted by non-medical establishments recently.

There are also a number of non-laser tattoo removal options availabletoday and a lot of these are dangerous. It does not make sense to injectstrong alkaline solutions into tattoo ink. It might remove some ink but itwould certainly remove normal tissues with risk of scarring.

Q switched ruby laser is renowned for its ability to remove green as wellas dark inks. It is also used for removing unwanted skin pigment. Withour q-switched Nd-Yag laser and the ruby laser, we now have a fullrange of advanced lasers to offer the very best in Laser tattoo removal.

For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall CosmeticClinic on 0800 0430737 or http://www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Overstrand Evening WIOur November monthly meeting also incorporated the Annual Meetingwhere reports were read, Financial Statements presented and a newCommittee and President appointed for the following year.

In December members enjoyed a social evening with a ‘Bring andShare’ supper followed by member Liz Crane demonstrating a simpleChristmas table decoration, a short light hearted quiz, all rounded offwith a dip into the bran tub.

We welcome visitors and prospective new members to our meetings; these are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Cromer WI We started our December meeting early with a Christmas buffet prepared by the Committee members. Plenty of turkey sandwiches, sausage rolls and mince pies. It was all rounded off by a visit from Father Christmas who issued out gifts to all. There was a lovely displayof creative hanging Christmas trees that had been made with colourfulChristmas material and milk bottle tops. These had been created at oneof our craft sessions with Val Lodge.

We then had our meeting and the speaker for the month was Mrs.Shirley Rees with her talk entitled “Sewing Inspirations”. We were toldhow it all started with a patchwork course at Wroxham Barns and thatled to embroidery, appliqué and all other forms of sewing. She lovedusing colour and this showed in her work. There was a display of quilts, wall hangings, bags, cushions and greeting cards.

We were told that our collection during the Christmas tree and Nativityfestival raised £142 for the Cromer Skatepark fund. We had a draw for a bursary to help two members attend a course at Denman, Oxford. Thisis the WI’s own training centre. Frances Lee and Doreen Wood bothwon the drawer to qualify. Our competition of a Christmas tree decoration was won by Pat Fisher.

New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of themonth at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

The Cromer and Sheringham Probus Clubchairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed fellowmembers and their guests at the ChristmasLunch held at the Links Hotel West Runton on 3 December. Everyone then tucked in to an excellent meal.

The loyal toast was proposed by Brian Bullockand then the chairman made a few remarks.Dave Vickery said that, at the half-way point inhis year in office, he was thoroughly enjoyingit, particularly as the standard of the speakersand the food had been high.

Dave thanked Barry Tomlinson and GordonHatchett for their work as treasurer and secretary respectively. He also thanked all themembers for their efficiency in lettinghim know on the occasions when theyare unable to attendthe monthly lunchmeetings.

In conclusion, Daveintroduced his guestof honour, KeithSkipper, and proposed a toast to all the guests.

Keith Skipper responded in his

usual witty and humorous manner with a mixture of truthful and fictional stories which included some real crackers. He concluded by thanking the members for their hospitality on behalf of himself, his wifeDiane and all the other guests.

Our lunch coincided with the day of Keith’smonthly mardle with Matthew Gudgin on BBCRadio Norfolk, so just after 6 o’clock he wascalled upon to explain on air why he hadturned up at the radio station in suit and tie. This gave him the opportunity to thank us again, rather morepublicly, and he referred to theforthcoming visits by David

Clayton and Greg Powles to our lunches in theNew Year.

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 4February featuring a talk after lunch by AlistairMurphy, the curator of Cromer Museum, onthe subject of the photographer Olive Edis.

The club is open to gentlemen who are retiredor nearly so. If you are interested, or knowsomeone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.

Having the responsibility for historically accuratecostumes for a well known play is quite a responsibility, but Nona Gray, who lives in Cromer is taking the task in her stride. Nona has researchedthe Bernard Pomerance play The Elephant Man,which is set in the 1880’s, and provided the correctcostumes for the period. The cast, all of whom arelocal, will enjoy wearing the clothes of the time, which, for the ladies, will mean bustles! The costumes will certainly enhance John Merrick’samazing story.

This well-known and deeply moving play tells thetrue story of John Merrick, whose severe deformitycauses him to be abandoned in a workhouse at theage of three. As an adult he is paraded as a ‘freak’

in a carnival until a doctorrescues him and provideshim with a home at his hospital. Underneath hisdeformity Merrick is intelligent and sensitive. Introduced to high Victoriansociety he finds himselfconfused by hypocriticalVictorian values and attitudes. This play raisesuncomfortable questionsabout society’s morality, the nature of charity andthe relative importance of spirituality versus science.

The audience are left to find their own answers.

The production is being put on by theCromer and Sheringham Operatic andDramatic Society at Sheringham LittleTheatre in February. The Society will beraising money for the charity ChangingFaces, which helps those with facial disfigurements. The Society, whoachieved charitable status themselves last year and who celebrate their centenary in 2014, hopes to raise £500 for Changing Faces.

The Elephant Man will be on fromWednesday 12 to Saturday 15 February at Sheringham Little

Theatre. Box Office: 01263 822347.

The Elephant Man....a heavy responsibility

Congratulations Are DueNew Year’s night in Cromer by the seaIt was surely just the very top place to beAnd the incredible show above the pierWas the all time best, that is very clear. This famous jewel of the north Norfolk coast2014 New Year`s night they could really boastFifteen minutes of a wondrous sheer delightAn extravaganza of a Cromer New Year sight.Congratulations to the organisers of this eventFor those displays despite the recent weather intentA show of sound and colour as we looked up highAnd thousands of eyes turned towards the night sky.In Sydney and Dubai great fireworks you would expectBut it is Cromer town we must now really respectAbove our damaged and historic promenade and pierOur sadness and blues were made to disappear. And then as the multitudes were homeward boundThey were accompanied by a melodious soundThe great parish church bells began to peelMaking the evening`s entertainment almost unreal.Congratulations to all concerned

It’s a couple of weeks since those New Yearresolutions …. Did more than the goose get alittle bit fat? Did you, like me, make a NewYear resolution to be healthier, be fitter? Andare you still keeping it? Well, if going to thegym or striding round North Norfolk in thedark evenings for that after work, work out isnot for you, how about singing?

Did you know that exercising those vocalchords is actually an aerobic exercise that benefits the heart and circulation, decreasesmuscle tension and, because it exercises ourlungs, tones up the body? And… singing has been found to improve sleep, tone facialmuscles and improve posture…. “What?” I hear you say, “Singing could make me morebeautiful!”

Well, yes! And there’s more. The latest researchshows singing in a choir causes a calming effectthat is as beneficial to your health as yoga. It canhelp reduce anger, depression and anxiety andhas been shown to improve balance issuescaused by illness. Then there are the social andemotional benefits. Singing enhances mood, increases positive feelings and is without doubt spiritually uplifting. It certainly brings peopletogether and encourages a sense of communityand if you sing with Cantamus CommunityChoir, I can promise you it is most assuredly a forum for fun & laughter. And we all knowlaughter is the best medicine!

Still not convinced? Well perhaps the more formal, scientific explanation will persuadeyou. I quote Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education, University of London, whohas studied the medical aspects of singing for30 years “Singing has physical benefits becauseit is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercisesmajor muscle groups in the upper body, evenwhen sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effectin reducing stress levels through the action ofthe endocrine system which is linked to oursense of emotional well-being. Psychologicalbenefits are also evident when peoplesing together as wellas alone because ofthe increased sense of community, belonging and sharedendeavour."

Cantamus Community Choir is a non-auditioned, friendlycommunity choir andalways welcome newmembers. You may have heard us sing the “Hallelujah” chorusor the magnificentcoronation anthem,

“Zadok the Priest”. Some of our members don’tread music and some haven’t sung since school, whilst others are accomplished singers with a wealth of experience. So if you want the benefits (and beauty treatment) of singing, docome to a rehearsal - Thursdays at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church, NR11 8NR. More information from [email protected] 07785 782498. Our members come from North Walsham,Thorpe Market, Sheringham, Happisburgh, andtowns and villages in between so if transport isa problem, a lift may be possible.

We look forward to growing healthier and morebeautiful, singing with you…

It’s not until you get the RNLI bug completelyunder your skin that you realise the commitment, bravery and selflessness that theyall have, and it’s been a privilege to spend timewith them. The boss is, however, slightly concerned that the alarm will go at seven thirtyon a Saturday night when my hands are full of steak, but I’ve assured him that Icarus’ steakalways takes priority!

This recipe has been a firm favourite on our a la carte menu for a while now, and if you’veever wanted to know how to cure salmon –now’s your chance.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Grovethis winter – we are open for dinner Thursday,Friday and Saturday nights, plus of course thebest Sunday Lunch in Norfolk!Best wishes,Charlie

You will need to purchase half side ofsalmon, scaled and pin boned (any fishmonger will do this for you).

► Place the salmon on a piece of parchment big enough to be able to fold over the fish.

► In a food processor, blend 5-7 good size sprigs of dill

► Add crushed black peppercorns, a handful of pink peppercorns, half a squeezed lemon, a good squeeze of Norfolk honey (if possible from hives that have been located near rape seed, as the honey tastes scrummy, and just a bit more fragrant).

► Blend all the above ingredients until a finepaste, like a pesto-type consistency, and put aside.

► Sprinkle a good handful of Maldon Sea onto the fish with the dill paste and spoon spread across the top of the salmon until even, as you need to have a consistent flavour through the whole of the flesh.

► Fold over the parchment, and then wrap gently with cling film length and width-wise until fully sealed.

► Leave in fridge for 10 days… (no longer!)

► When cured take your salmon from the fridge, unwrap and slice very finely using a carving (or if you have a long fish) knife.

► For the simple Horseradish crème fraîche,

grate onewhole horse-radish (can bepurchasedfrom a goodfarm shop although youmight need to order in advance),being careful not tograte too farinto the core asit becomesvery hard andstringy.

► Add to the horseradish one teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt and pepper and a touch of castor sugar.

► Mix all together with a good couple of largetable spoons of crème fraîche and an equalamount of sour cream. ► Finally squeeze your other half of lemon

(or probably a fresh lemon, given that the last half was used ten days before!) into the mix.

Simply serve your salmon with your freshHorseradish sauce and toasted sourdoughbread.

Over the Christmas holiday we were luckyenough to see a wonderful production ofLeonard Bernstein’s musical version ofVoltaire’s ‘Candide’ at the Menier Chocolate Factory, which is close to Southwark Cathedralin London.

The hero Candide is young and naive but maintains his belief that we live in ‘the best ofall possible worlds’, even as he travels aroundthe world being conned and abused by almosteveryone he meets. The wonderful score endswith the song ‘Make our Garden Grow’ whichis so stirring that it should inspire us all to getoutside into our gardens as soon as the weatherallows.

All the gardening organisations and seed companies are sending out advice and details

of their new introductions at this time of yearand here are some of the suggestions I haveseen:

SUTTONS SEEDSThis seed company has introduced new flowers and vegetable seed including Tomato‘Firecracker’, a compact, naturally trailing variety for pots, basket or patio whichthroughout the season promises 60-80 fruits,

each weighing around 30-35 g. They are alsopromoting a new plant Didiscus ‘Madonna’which has lace-like flowers. It is a border plantproducing domed clusters of tiny flowers. It can also be grown in a cold greenhouse or conservatory.

UNWINS SEEDSUnwins are selling the Rose of the Year 2014which is called Lady Marmalade. They are alsopublicising the BBC2 TV programme’ TheGreat British Garden Revival’ which providesa great winter tonic and reminder of warmertimes to come. Gardening programmes are reportedly losing viewers with Gardener’sWorld particularly badly hit.

MARSHALLS SEEDSWith the dramatically increasing price of potatoes in the shops Marshalls are encouraging people to grow their own and reminding us allto get in our orders for seed potatoes while allthe different varieties are available. To go withthe new potatoes Marshalls are selling Brundell’s Mint, which comes from a specialistgrower outside Norwich.

They also have an Extra Early Brassica Collection which promises early delivery of the plants which allows harvesting as early asMay/June.

ROYAL HORTICULTURALSOCIETYThe RHS suggests that in January we shoulddo the following jobsHelp the Hungry - Putting out food over thewinter is a great way tosupport the wildlife in your garden especiallythe birds.Apple and Pear tree pruning – To ensuregood crops of fruit it is best to carry out pruning of apples and pears in the winter. Theoverall aim is to remove dead, old and less productive wood and to reduce congestion.Plants for winter cheer – Even in the depthsof winter it is possible to have plants in bloomin the garden some of which are highlyscented. A visit to the winter planting at theCambridge Botanic Gardens is highly recommended.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIESWhy not start the New Year by joining yourlocal Garden Club or Horticultural Society andtaking part in all the activities they arrange?I must finally return to Voltaire, ‘that is verywell said’, replied Candide, ’but we must cultivate our garden’. The photograph is of the famous Borough Market in Southwark atChristmas that shows what we can produce ifwe cultivate our gardens and allotments.Bob Wilkinson

2013 was a year of very contrasting weather! Snowand ice for the first few weeks, then a lot of coldrain followed by hot sunshine with very dry conditions. Then, of course, a storm surge to finish.

During the early bad weather we became involvedwith Cromer Railway Station. Jim Bond, Stan Foxall (who has been tending the platform plantersfor several years) and Monica Gepp, together withJohn Dennis and Carole Blake, who have been appointed Station Adopters, met with Alan Boageyfrom Greater Anglia Railways to discuss ways toimprove the look of the Station. Painting and newsignage has been carried out. Litter bins and largeplanters (although second hand from Norwich Station) were supplied, with large amounts of compost and plants donated by HomebaseCromer. At the recent Greater Anglia Awards Ceremony Cromer won the Most Improved StationAward thanks to John and Carole for keeping theStation clean and tidy and Stan for looking after allthe planters. We are told more improvements areplanned for 2014.

As mentioned earlier the weather held up most ofour planned planting, however we did manage tofinish before the really dry weather as watering isvery difficult. We are gradually changing to moresustainable schemes which we can establish in theAutumn and early Spring. Around the Tourist Information Centre, for example, we are changingto hardy shrubs. Also the island beds are due for a complete replant. There will, of course, still beseasonal bedding. As we are all volunteers we dowhat we can when we can.

We were very sad to lose our good friend VeraWoodcock this year. Vera was Treasurer for Cromer

in Bloom for many years and always supported ourwork. We are hoping to arrange a small garden containing ornamental trees in Suffield Park inmemory of Vera who as a Councillor represented and lived in the area. The Annual Competition wasnot so well supported this year both in the amountof entries and the attendance at the PresentationEvening. This was again held in the walled gardenat Felbrigg Hall, thanks to Ray Sandham, General Manager, National Trust. A raffleraised £75 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.Perhaps it is time to re-think this Competitionand give it a new look.

We have managed to do most of the Winter tidy up and planting. Mrs Liz Leeder bought ussixty double tulip bulbs which should brightenup the TIC planters this Spring.

In December we again took part in the Christmas Tree Festival. Our tree was sponsored by Homebase Cromer and £180 was raised inour bucket collection for the East Anglian AirAmbulance - our thanks to everyone who contributed. Cromer in Bloom also decoratedthe entrance hallway and corridor at the ParishHall for the Christmas Market.

We were pleased to welcome two new ladies to our ranks this year. Debbie Simpson hasbeen doing a great job with the concreteplanters at the Bus Station all Summer and Alison Porter (very new) helped with theChristmas arrangements. Many thanks also toSally Tipple, Secretary, Jackie Land, Treasurer,Committee Members John Pretty, Stan andBetty Foxall, Viv Bateman, Roger Tipple, with

occasional help from Alan Gepp. Our Chairman,Jim Bond, is still improving and has been able to do some planting this year.

And so another 'Blooming ' year has come to a close. We all hope 2014 will be a good to us all.Our best wishes for a Happy and Peaceful NewYear to everyone in Cromer.

Students in years 10 and 11 are having a cracking good time taking onthe challenge of the National Cipher Competition 2013. After 006rounds they find themselves in joint first place with other schools fromall over the UK including tertiary colleges and universities, and they arefeeling pretty confident about round 007. This is an annual competition organised by the University of Southampton and supported by TrinityCollege, Cambridge and GCHQ with numerous companies sponsoringthe challenge. The students Andra Chirnicinii, Harry Dennison, JordanTruong, Joe Wynne and Wei Xu can be found every Thursday from3.15pm, when the new challenge is published, until very late breakingthe code and secretly posting their solution. They have not had breakfastin a classroom yet but it has been very close at times. This is just an-other example of Cromer Academy students taking on the challenge andbeating it. Who knows, maybe the next Alan Turing is studying atCromer right now.

ROTARY SLEIGH RAISESNEARLY £1,200The Christmas Sleigh collection organised annually by Cromer andSheringham Rotary club raised £1,173. This year’s collection was in aidof the Cromer and Sheringham Lifeboat Stations.

The Academy prides itself on itsfundraising activities having alreadyraised thousands of pounds for localcharities such as the East AnglianAir Ambulance, ‘About withFriends’, Cromer RNLI, RainbowTrust, Cromer Foodbank and MacMillan Cancer Trust. Each year the Shoe Box Appeal goes from strength to strength, allowingstudents to do something for children their own age, many hundreds of miles away. For the fifth year running, Cromer Academystudents, supported by their friendsand families, and members of thelocal community have produced byfar the largest number of boxes ofany school in the County. This years'total of 201 Shoe Boxes surpassed all expectations, and proved that whatever hardships the current economic climate bringsto youngsters in the area, they are always willing to help those less fortunate.

Pens, notebooks, toothpaste, toothbrushes,

hats, scarves, gloves, and cuddly toys wereamong gifts included in the boxes, along withmessages of goodwill which have this weekleft Norfolk on the long journey by lorry acrossEurope. Nearly 10,000 boxes were collectedacross the county from schools, church groups, and individuals this year, all put together,

checked, and organised by a willing band ofvolunteers, before they arrive in Novi Sad intime for Christmas.

Cromer Academy Assistant Headteacher ChrisCarey, who organises the Shoe BoxAppeal each year, was once againamazed at the efforts of the students.

"Each year we put out this appeal to our students, with information regarding the plight of other childrenin cities across Europe less fortunatethan themselves. Every year theyamaze us with their reaction. We areby no means the biggest of schoolsbut the number of boxes our studentsmanage to put together astounds useach year when we put them all together for collection. To onceagain produce such a huge numberof boxes says an awful lot about theschool and its students. They can beextremely proud of their effortswhich go such a long way to providing something for children

who otherwise would have nothing. I can onlythank the students, their families, and everyoneelse in the local community who have contributed to this year's effort."

Collection at Morrisons Supermarket in aid of MacMillanWe would just like to say a huge thank you to Morrisons Supermarket in Cromer, the staff and Manager, our collectors and finally YOU - the very generous people of North Norfolk!

The magnificent sum of £1622.90 was collected over the two days, 19 and 20 December, and has been given to the North Norfolk Branch of MacMillan. We really appreciate everyone’s generosity whether itbe their time or money!

What a great place to live!

Thank youDiane Evans & Elaine Twinn Committee members of North Norfolk Committee for MacMillan

Cromer Academy Shoebox AppealCromer Academy students once again provided some Christmas cheer for the homeless and poor children of Serbia in their annual Christmas Shoe Boxappeal. For the last 8 years, students from the Academy have been filling shoeboxes full of gifts and toys for the children of Novi Sad, one of Norwich's twinCities, for the Samaritan's Purse charity.

Although the message on the answer phone says that we are closed overthe Christmas period there are still some messages left, which Stephaniedoes listen to. A call from a gentleman regarding a “stray pregnant cat”on a car park obviously needed a return call to assess the situation. Afterspeaking to the gentleman Stephanie contacted one of our volunteerswho kindly agreed to go and pick up the cat so that she was safe shouldthe birth of the kittens be imminent. This was not just a two minute visitdown the road but involved a round trip of about 20 miles.

On reaching the car park our volunteer found the cat sitting next to a plate with a cat basket close by. She secured the cat and put her in her car. On going back to the place where she found the cat she was approached by someone who asked if she had just taken the cat. On confirming she had and the reasons why, the person, who lived near thecar park, stated it was her cat (apparently the dish and basket are therefor another cat). She became very aggressive to our volunteer, statingthat the cat was not pregnant, we should have put up posters, checked

with the vets and knockedon all the doors nearby tofind out whose cat it was.Can you imagine the response our volunteerwould have received if shehad done this, particularlyas it happened to be Boxing Day? Bearing inmind we were under theimpression the cat waspregnant (she did have one of those low undercarriages neutered cats often have), our main aim was to ensure thecat was safe in case she needed veterinary care. Contacting vets to letthem know the cat was in our care would have been a priority once theyhad opened after the holiday but not possible while cover was being offered by another practice, not in the immediate vicinity. Most peoplewould be relieved to learn that their cat’s welfare had been considered tobe important but, sadly, not in this instance. From our point of view itwas a blessing not to start the New Year with a pregnant cat and to thank

our volunteer to coming to the rescueand responding to a request for help.

If you are looking for a cat or kittenplease give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visitwww.cats.org.uk/northwalshamfor a description and photographs ofthe cats before giving us a call on theabove number to find out where anyparticular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see ifyou are eligible for a voucher).

REVIEW - SOUTHREPPS CHORALE ANDNORFOLK BRASS - CROMER PARISH CHURCHStephen Richards, the musical director and conductor of the SouthreppsChorale, along with Geoff Barber, the director and conductor of NorfolkBrass, presented a programme so appropriate, especially as we move intoAdvent with Christmas fast approaching.A rousing piece - Intrada for Antiphonal Brass by Melchior Franck - openedthe concert where the players were divided - performing within the north andsouth aisles, which apart from some initial intonation problems, really captured the attention of everyone in the church, and probably outside! The Chorale performed a set of four pieces, Ava Maria with soloist KathrynTillyard, Music Alone Shall Live, All Ye Who Music Love and Panis Angellicus - Cesar Franck. Here the Brass accompaniment somewhat overpowered the voices, a lesson to be learned perhaps.Following this, Norfolk Brass played Frere Jacques and Beethoven Beano, the latter a fun piece involving snippets of well known Beethoven writingswith pieces by other composers. The programme continued in the same format throughout the evening withthree more sets from Norfolk Brass and four sets from the choir - with outstanding performances by both choir and brass - these being Rhythm ofLife from Sweet Charity, trombone solo in Jeannie with the Light BrownHair by Stephan Foster, arr Roger Harvey, Wherever You Are by PaulMealor, Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen and Coventry Carol and Maleguenaby Ernesto Lecuona, arr Stuart Malcolm. The choir brought this very entertaining concert to a close in performing theHallelujah Chorus and Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis. A fitting end indeed, albeit the tempo of the Hallelujah Chorus was rather slow.David Hillery, pianist accompanist, must be mentioned because of his obvious musicianship, especially in the Handel where one’s hands need to bewarm! How encouraging it is to know that the Southrepps Chorale has only beenformed in the last two years, bringing together approximately 50 plus singerswho so obviously enjoy what they do. Great credit must be conveyed toStephan Richards and David Hillery for what must have been many hours ofdevoted tuition and practice sessions - Gareth Malone for Southrepps? Notrequired! The concert was in aid of the Cromer Bells Restoration project which, according to Dr Maureen Gardiner - the driving force behind the fund raising - has almost reached the requirement to restore and add to the bellswithin Cromer Parish Church. A tremendous achievement.

REVIEW - CYAN TRACES (JAZZ QUINTET)- THE ROCKET HOUSE CAFE, CROMERThe Christmas spirit was alive and well within the walls of this popular seaside venue. Every table was booked, accommodating the enthusiasticgathering of food, wine and jazz devotees.Cyan Traces, led by Dave Amis (trombone), backed by Tom Harris (piano),Ivars Galenieks (bass) and percussionist Alex Best, played a programme ofnumbers all having a festive flavour.Holly Graham (vocals) sang in almost every number in the two sets in hereasy going style, although it was difficult to appreciate her performance because of so much chatter from the gathering of people, determined toenjoy the occasion. It is a shame that an ensemble of such talented musiciansbecame providers of background music, but this seems to be the norm thesedays. The band played music by Irving Goodman, Billy Hayes, Johnny Marks,Jack Fox, Leroy Anderson, Mel Torme and Joan Javitts, to name but a few. The highlights for me in the first set was Have a Holly Jolly Christmas inwhich Tom Harris, a truly gifted jazz pianist, produced superb improvisatorypassages with Ivar Halenieks matching this with some wizardry on acousticbass.Mary’s Boy Child in calypso style, where all soloists excelled in this secondset especially in Holy Night in 12/8 time and Away in a Manger, followed byWe Wish you a Merry Christmas closed the sets. Dave Amis who was responsible for arrangements, added codas and ideasand interpretations created an interesting impression on the two sets of basicChristmas music. As the evening drew to a close, and conversations waned, it was really goodto hear the music!

The presentation was made byMr Peter Sladden, right ofphoto, the Band’s President, at the Christmas Concert in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham. Due to unfortunate circumstances,Peter s having to retire his cornet to its case and his seatin the Band has become vacant. A respected and very skilled musician, Peterwill be greatly missed.

If there are any musicians who feel they have the skill to occupy the vacated position, or any other position in the Band – beginners are alsowelcome – please contact Steve Askew, the Band’s Secretary on 01263838411 or [email protected]. Alternatively visit the Band’swebsite at www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com.

Ned NimbusThe past year has been as varied as usual but this time, unlike 2012, we had along run of fine weather from July onwards and very little in the way of coldweather in the last three months of the year. The first six months were generally cold/cool but with an above average con-tent of high pressure especially to the north, rainfall was below average . Ofnote was the persistence of a north or north-east wind off the cold North Sea . As we enter 2014 expect a continuation of what we have been having in De-cember as the Atlantic still has plenty of energy in this year. Towards the middle of January we start to see overall pressure rising givingrise to more stability in the atmosphere so subsequently there will be more

chance of some less olatileweather. To sum up for February andMarch it looks like tempera-tures will average out a littlebelow average and under highpressure conditions there willbe some decidedly coldovernight temperatures inMarch. Only towards the end ofMarch will there be any fine, warm weather and this is likely to be short lived. Ned Nimbus

You have found that perfect property to buy, and your offer hasbeen accepted. You have beenround the house a few times andeverything looks lovely and thecoffee smelt wonderful! So, do you need to spend all that money on asurvey? Well, it depends. If you are borrowingmoney from a bank or building society, a valuation survey will be required, and yourmortgage offer letter should explain the cost.

If it is only your money you are using to buythe property you do not have to have a surveydone; it is your important decision. Some reasons to consider are set out later, but first, what are the different types of surveys?

There are four main types and they increase incost from £150 or so, upto and beyond £1,000.

MORTGAGE VALUATIONThis is just the lender checking that the valueof the property is sufficient to cover its loan to you. It does not offer you, as a buyer, any protection.

A HOME CONDITIONREPORTThe report will provide you with clear “trafficlight” ratings indicating the condition of different parts of the building, services, garageand outbuildings drawing attention to obviousdefects that require attention. This survey will

not go into a great amount of detail nor will itgive you a valuation of the property. These areoften used if you are purchasing a modernproperty in apparent good condition.

A HOME BUYER REPORTThe report includes all of the features in theHome Condition Report as well as a more extensive inspection, a valuation of the property by the surveyor, an insurance reinstatement figure for the property, a list of defects or potential defects that could affectthe value of the property, advice on repairs

and maintenance, a list of issues that requireinvestigation so as to avoid future problemsand defects and identification of any legal issues that require addressing and informationon the location and local environment. Theseare often used if you are purchasing a standardolder or modern property that appears in reasonable condition.

A DETAILED BUILDING SURVEYAlso known as a ‘structural survey’. This report includes a thorough inspection and a detailed report, a description of visible defects and potential issues, the repair optionsavailable and the implications of taking no remedial action. These are often used if you arepurchasing a larger, or older/run down, alteredor unusual property or if you are intending tocarry out major works to the property

Shall I have a survey?• The purchase of a

house is, for most of us, the single biggest financial commitment we will ever make.

• Failure to have a survey may leave you

with having tospend thousands thatyou

had not budgetedfor, and to problems

selling on in duecourse .

• On the other hand, estimated costs of repairing identified problems, set out in a full survey, gives you important budgeting information, and if the problems have come as a surprise to you, may result in you not going ahead, saving you from an expensive mistake, or justify a renegotiation of the agreed price.

Our advice is simply to make sure you learneverything you can about the property you are buying, and that should include gettinga survey.

Which Surveyor?Look for a surveyor with Royal Institute ofChartered Surveyors (RICS) membership who is used to surveying properties in thisarea. Any surveyor should give his or her professional view up front as to the most appropriate survey for the property you are interested in.

If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact the team at ourSheringham office on 01263 825959 or [email protected].

Lydia Greenway and Heather Knightboth spent Tuesday 10 December atCromer Academy, before finding outthey were both in the squad for thenext Women’s Ashes series yesterday.Left-hand batter Greenway scored the winningruns in the fourth match of this summer’s successful Ashes series for England with a knock of 80 not out from 64 balls in the deciding one-day match.

England captain Charlotte Edwards describedGreenway’s performance, which saw Englandbounce back from 9 for 3 when chasing down128, as “probably the best one-day innings I’ve ever seen.”

Cromer Academy’s Assistant headteacher andPE teacher, Chris Carey, said “The girls wereabsolutely fantastic, the pair of them. Theyshowed some video clips of them performingin the summer and then led a Q&A session, and it really was good. The girls of CromerAcademy really are inspired by them.”

Both players stayed for another event atCromer Academy in the evening, hosted byCromer Cricket Club, who invited other local clubs Bradfield, Sheringham and

Ashmanhaugh & Barton to come and meet the England stars as well.

They also led a three-hour coaching sessionwith the Cromer Academy girls in the afternoon, with Mr Carey explaining “it was all part of an initiative we are part of throughthe Norfolk Cricket Board and Chance toShine, which is to encourage more girls to getinvolved in cricket. So we’ve started a girlscricket club within the school, with all the different usual roles of a club, like secretary, treasurer, someone being responsible for thekit. So it’s not just about training, it’s aboutgetting the girls involved in cricket, not justplaying. We have some girls who don’t actuallyplay but because their friends do, they get involved with the non-playing roles. It’s to

encourage the girls to get into the game and get them interested in joining a local club.”

The Cromer girls were themselves givingcoaching on the day, with 90 pupils fromMundesley Junior, Northrepps Primary,Roughton Primary and Cromer Junior attending as part of the project.

The project sees the girls make decision onhow best to use their funding. Mr Carey, whois also manager of Cromer Town FootballClub, added “it’s been going really well. We’vehad 24 girls from the outset and coming toevery session, and the numbers haven’tdropped off.
