On Saturday 7th December Cromer’s Christmas Lights were switchedon by Dr Who star John Hurt in front of thousands of cheering people. Before the big switch on at 5.30pm visitors to the town enjoyed enter-tainment throughout the day including a Christmas Tree Festival andCharity Stalls in Cromer Church, a Nativity Festival in the MethodistChurch and stalls, dancing, music and fayres in other locations acrossthe town. From 4.30pm proceedings were conducted by Tony Shipp, Chair ofCromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation in the centre of the town.Crowds were treated to an appearance by Olly Day and the cast of TheCromer Christmas Show who havebeen unable to perform the Show sinceThursday night’s storm damaged thePavillion Theatre on the Pier.Plenty of crowds joined in as the RevCanon David Court then led people insinging a host of traditional carols, ac-companied by the ever popular Salva-tion Army Band.

After the carols it was over to JohnHurt to press the button and bathe thetown in colourful light with the help oflocal schoolboy Ollie Robinson. Mr Hurt said “I’m delighted to say thatCromer provides a big red button! Ishall enjoy squashing that”. As the lights went on the crowd cheered and

clapped as Christmas was officially welcomed in. Mr Hurt then spent thenext few hours meeting fans and signing autographs in the Parish Hall.

A host of community groups have joined forces this year for Cromer’sChristmas celebrations which has seen Cromer Town Council, CromerChristmas Lights Committee, the Chamber of Trade and many other

community groupsworking together toplan the events.

Paul Stowe, Chairof the ChristmasLights Committeesaid “this is the firstyear the lights havebeen switched on

without Vera Woodcock and we have put up twonew lights at the entrance of the parish hall in Vera’smemory – an angel and a bell. An angel becauseVera was one and a bell because Jingle Bells wasVera’s favourite Christmas song.” Vera, who waspresident of the Christmas Lights Committee diedearlier this year at the age of 86, having been in-volved in the illuminations for over 38 years.

Mr Stowe went on to say “today is the culminationof eight weeks of hard work by a dozen volunteerson the lighting committee who this year have put upeight new set pieces throughout the town”. Tony Nash, Chair of the Christmas Event committeesaid “this year we decided to move all the Christ-mas stalls and activities indoors. It has been very

successful with plenty of people visiting throughout the day”.Cromer, which has received severe damage along its seafront in recentdays, caused by the storm, saw thousands of people visiting the town.Tracey Khalil, Chair of Cromer Chamber of Trade said “the day hasbeen marvellous, there have been lots of people about and, as always,Cromer has pulled together as a community despite the exceptional tidalsurges of the last few days”. The lights will be on until January 5th.

REGULAR EVENTS

If you have been put off by the adverse, somewhat unjustified, comments about theSummer Seaside Special, don't be becausethe Christmas show is BRILLIANT!

It is a truly wonderful Christmas extravaganza with the traditionalChristmas carols and vibrant andlively show numbers.

Norfolk funny man, Olly Day, in hisown unique style is great at leadingthe show, along with comedy illusionist, Martyn James doingsome amazing magic, especiallywith Martini bottles.

Cromer's own Eddie Bushell andJane Watkins, the solo singers capture all the moods of the showfrom the atmospheric Silent Night to the fast moving show numbers.

The dancers yet again this year are fantastic, and it is better that there are four girl dancersagain for this show. The show would not besame without them.

This great cast are assisted, once again, byMarlene's School of Dance they really providethe "ah" factor.

The show has been devised, directedand choreographed by Di Cooke andNigel Hogg is the Musical Director.

The colourful and stylish costumeswere designed and produced byLaura Whyte and Beryl Patterson. The set design by Ian Westbrookadds greatly to this show. The skillful lighting design by AmandaHill really compliments all thescenes.

I would suggest that you quickly go and buy tickets as there is something for all ages and you will be thoroughly entertained by everybody involved with thissparkling show.

Cromer Pier Damaged -Christmas Showtemporarily suspendedThe record surge tides that hit Britain and in particular the coast of Nor-folk & Suffolk severely damaged Cromer Pier. With one of the best ever Christmas Shows only just opened less than aweek before, the damage to the pier and the Pavilion Theatre has forcedthe show’s cancellation at least for a few days. The worst ever surge tide damaged a number of businesses small andlarge right around the coast as well as requiring the evacuation ofsubstantial numbers of homeowners from the worst-hit areas. As we go to press, the North Norfolk Distrcit Council doing all they canto get damage assessment from structural en-gineers.It is to be hoped that the damage, which in-cluded many decking planks being rippedfrom the pier, can be fixed quickly so that theChristmas Show can continue, hopefully evenbefore you read this story.

Council calls for guarantee on‘crucial’ Coasthopper serviceNorth Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has called for Norfolk CountyCouncil to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the Coasthopper bus service that links isolated towns across the district throughout the year.In a motion approved at a meeting of NNDC Full Council last monthcouncillors agreed to urge the County Council not to cut the service, andthat if there were any proposals for changes to the service there shouldbe full and meaningful consultations with residents and stakeholders inNorth Norfolk before any changes could be implemented. The Coasthopper bus service, currently run by Norfolk Green, carried545,523 passengers in 2012, with an estimated increase to over 570,000this year. Norfolk Green has said that any cuts in County Council funding over the next two years would force them to reduce the level of service, most especially in the winter.Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Leader, said “The Coasthopper bus serviceplays a crucial role in the district, providing essential links between ourcoastal and neighbouring inland communities.“It is a vital component of the North Norfolk economy, making it possible for people to travel outside their towns and villages throughoutthe year. We are very concerned by the County Council’s proposals to drastically reduce the funding of this core service. Any cuts will potentially lead to further rural isolation for many people across the district and threaten to make life more difficult for our tourism and business communities.” The full wording of the motion as passed is: “North Norfolk DistrictCouncil calls for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the service and to consult fully with the residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk on the details of any potentialchanges when these are known.”

Council gallery hosts new exhibitionNorth Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is currentlypresenting a debut exhibition entitled ‘Mixed Media Exhibition’featuring a collection of observational and creative works byyoung local artist Charlotte Rowlands. The exhibition runs until27 January 2014.Self-taught 24 year old North Norfolk Artist Charlotte Rowlands, fromRoughton, near Cromer, has achieved an inspiring portfolio of mixedmedia from original portraits and wildlife to stained glass 3D work. Shehas been encouraged and creatively nurtured by her artist mother KarenRowlands, who formally exhibited at NNDC last year.Charlotte said “I love the challenge in drawing portraits of observingand capturing the subtle details that make each individual person unique. The simplicity of colour and rawness of pencil I feel brings an honestyto the portraits. When drawing animals I like to use pastel and charcoalto achieve the quality of light, fluffiness in the fur. Making stained glasspresents a very different challenge to drawing. An image needs to becaptured in a few simple lines, then developed by the choice of coloursand textures of glass.” The exhibition will provide original and great value seasonal gifts ranging from £8 to £180, with the additional offer of commissions for drawings and stained glass. NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normaloffice hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm; Wednesday 10am – 5pm; Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Overstrand and CromerCommunity First RespondersHello, my name is Ronnie the Responder. I am writing this article in order to clarify the question that I and my colleagues haverecently been asked, which is:

Is the community Public Access Defibrillator (cPAD) scheme and Community First Responder (CFR) scheme the same?

The cPAD scheme is an independent scheme thatallows communities to fund raise in order to establish an Automated External Defibrillator in a high visibility cabinet that is attached to theexternal wall of a building, although they can also be placed within public buildings such as sporting venues, shopping complexes and doctor surgeries, in fact in any location where people are likely to congregate and is for use by the public.

The defibrillator is accessed by a code given by the ambulance servicedispatcher when you dial 999, (In all cases dial 999 first as it is reallyimportant that the professionals are on their way). Your local ambulanceservice will notify you if there is a cPAD box near to you and if it is easily accessible, and give you the access code to the box. If you arewilling they will ask you to get this and commence the relevant actions. No training is required to use the defibrillator as, once activated, it willgive verbal instructions. However, awareness or training sessions inbasic CPR and use of AEDs are useful and can help with confidence in using a defibrillator.

A Community First Responder is a volunteer who is trained by the ambulance service to attend emergency calls in the area where they live or work. Our aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergencyin the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives on scene. Weare sent by ambulance control to life-threatening emergencies such ascardiac arrest, heart attack chest pains, severe asthma attack, diabeticHypoglycaemic attack, epilepsy and anaphylactic shock.

We live or work in area where a group is set up and can get to an incident in just a few minutes while an ambulance resource is on its way.Our role is to help stabilise the patient and, in doing so, keep the patientalive until the arrival of the more highly skilled ambulance crew, whoare trained to undertake further life saving techniques. An ambulance

will always be mobilised to every call that the First Responder attends. Once the Ambulance arrives on scene, the Community First Responderwill hand over to the crew and may be asked to assist. After the case iscomplete and the patient is on their way to the hospital, the Responder isrequired to telephone Ambulance control to notify them that they areclear of the incident.

First Responders utilise their own vehicle, pay their own insurance, roadfund licence, MOT and fuel. They also provide their own protectiveclothing. We carry our own AED and Oxygen along with a variety oftherapy masks, airways, bandages and dressings. The only medicationthat we carry and are authorised to administer is Dextragel for use whensomeone has very low blood/sugar levels.

i hope that you have found this information useful and should youhave any further questions the please let me know by email, c/o [email protected] or phone me on 01263 576539.

Norfolk MPs and Lib Dem councillorscondemn council proposal to cut funding for student transport in NorfolkNorfolk Members of Parliament have expressed their concern at the proposed changes to post 16 school transport. In a letter to the Leader of Norfolk County Council, George Nobbs, all nine Norfolk MPs urgedthe Leader of NCC to look at other ways to achieve savings rather thanincreasing the cost of transport passes. Norfolk County Council is currently conducting a consultation into the proposed changes. The consultation closed on 12 December 2013.

six years ago norfolk Cleaning was founded by Peter and Diane Murther, offering a domestic cleaning service to the local community.

This soon changed and what developedwas, The Norfolk Cleaning Group. This ismade up of; Norfolk Cleaning, NorfolkLaundry Services, Norfolk Holiday HomeManagement and now The Norfolk Cleaning Centre.

Peter and Diane started Norfolk Cleaning when they were unable to find a professional cleaning company to lookafter their own office and home in NorthWalsham. Peter has been in managementfor almost all of his working life, withmany years running his own company. The Group has grown phenomenally yearupon year. What started as a small opera-tion has turned into something on a much larger scale with a wide range of services being offered throughout Norfolk, including;Complete Holiday Home Management Package, Washing and Ironing,Dry Cleaning, End Of Tenancy Cleaning, Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning and the job everyone hates… Oven Cleaning.

Norfolk Cleaning first started in a small unit on Douglas Bader Close,North Walsham but shortly after was forced to move to much largerpremises at 2A Stanford Tuck Road. With the significant expansion ofthe laundry, 2A just wasn’t big enough and they have now taken over the

unit next door. With half of this unit being used for laundry, there wasstill half of the unit left to form The Norfolk Cleaning Centre.

The Norfolk Cleaning Centre launches in December selling Janitorialand Cleaning Supplies that have been tried and tested by their cleanerson a daily basis. These will be available for sale both on-line andthroughout their retail outlet. They really believe their products work, and not only that it’s next day delivery. Who knows what’s next…?!

The jolly team look forward to helping you soon!

On 11 November Fred Corbett, a cabi-netmaker from West Runton, returnedfrom a successful 18 day trek toEverest Base Camp, to raisemoney for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund.He flew from the UK to Katmanduthen on to the notoriously short airstrip at Lukla, high in the Himalayasof Nepal. From there he trekkedthrough the pine forests and over longsuspension bridges spanning deepgorges, gradually climbing higher intothe more bleak mountainous regions.

There were 20 people in our party saidMr Corbett, plus guides, a doctor, sherpas and 5 yaks, and we stayed intea houses in small remote villagesand Buddhist temples. Of the 20 people in our party 18 made it through to Everest Base Camp. One person who becameseriously ill due to altitude sickness had to be

air lifted out to Katmandu Hospital.

We were extremely lucky with the weather,

most days having a sunny, still, cold morningand cobalt blue skies. The previous parties had

not been able to make Base Camp because ofover 4ft of snow. The steep uneven stone pathscombined with headaches, nausea, tiredness

and lack of sleep which is common athigh altitudes, made for tough going, but a thoroughly rewarding tripthrough stunning scenery and friendlywelcoming local people.

Having funded the whole trip myselfwe initially hoped to raise £1000 but at present we have raised over £2500for The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fundat Epilepsy Research UK.

A huge thank you to everyone whohelped with invaluable training and amassive thank you also to everyonewho has generously sponsored me anddonated money.

People have been amazing and mywife and I have been overwhelmed by

people's generosity.

Norfolk Car EnthusiastsThe second meeting of the newly formed Norfolk Car Enthusiasts clubtook place on November 27th at the Bluebell Inn in North Walsham andattracted an keen group of 13 people with an eclectic range of interestsfrom supercars to classic cars.

A spokesman said that apart from the regular monthly meetings, for2014, the group hoped to organise a trip to the Lotus factory, arrange

Sunday runs, visit or participate in car shows, do quiz nights, invitespeakers with special technical expertise, or those who want to do a slideshow presentation of motoring trips they’ve been on. Other suggestionsranged from a day’s karting to organising longer trips to Scotland, Walesor even Europe.

The next get together will be a pub lunch at the Rising Sun pub inColtishall on December 15th at 1pm. All are welcome.

all eyes will be on the skies above CromerPier at 5pm on 1 January 2014 for the traditional new year’s Day Firework display, and organisers hope as many peopleas possible will again come to Cromer for theday – but urge them not to leave it until thelast minute to come to Cromer.

“We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantagepoints to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says FireworkCommittee Chairman Jim Bond.

“The idea has always been to bring people up tothe coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

"This year, 1 January is a Wednesday, so lingerlonger and enjoy the evening. Cafés, pubs andrestaurants will also be open, so there'll be plentyof places to get a cuppa or something stronger."

There will also be teas and coffees in the Churchwith mulled wine outside Cromer Museum.Raising over £3,000 for local good causes – andfunding the following year’s display – the annualdisplay attracts up to 8,000 people into Cromeron New Year’s Day.

"This year’s show will be as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have beenplanning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever toproduce effects that will light up the sea in a variety of colours, but this, as always, is allweather dependent.”

This year’s display has been specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, representing thepoppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100thanniversary of the commencement of the FirstWorld War in 1914.

3pm Fun runWork off those New Year’s Eve excesses with agentle jog along Cromer Prom – or a five minutedash if you’re up to it! North Norfolk BeachRunners are organising their annual One MileFun Run as a curtain-raiser for the firework display at 5pm.

Starting from the pier forecourt at 3pm, the runis open to all ages and abilities, with categoriesfor under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will takeplace from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.

sPenD tHe Day in CroMerPrior to the fireworks there will be illuminated light-sabres and lanterns available to buy during the afternoon out side Cromer Museum

(next to the Church). Mulled wine will again beserved outside the museum, with tea, coffee, andhot soup available in the church.

Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will alsobe open and other vendors are planning to ensurethe crowds who descend on Cromer won’t gohungry. Please see the Town Council website(www.cromertown.org) and facebook page(‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) for a listof some of the traders who will be participating.

“PLease GiVe GenerousLy”Donations from spectators last year raised over£8,500, which is divided between funding thefollowing year’s display and local charities.

“Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as theycan,” says Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can makea lot of difference to local charities and goodcauses – and without everyone’s help wecouldn’t continue the annual display.”

Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early aspossible on New Year’s Day. All three town carparks will be open. Runton Road car park will becharging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all dayparking from 2pm on the day. Normal car parkfees will apply on all other car parks.

Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8amon New Year’s Day until after the display (7pm approx) although Tides Restaurant will be openfrom 10am – 4pm.

The cast of this year’s pantomime have arrivedat Sheringham Little Theatre in a blaze ofcolour.

As costumes are fitted and rehearsals for SnowWhite begin, familiar faces are being welcomed back and new performers being introduced to the coastal venue.

This year’s festive production beginson Friday, December 13 and runsuntil Saturday, January 4.

Written by West End star KillianDonnelly, who is currently starringin The Commitments, and has appeared in blockbuster film LesMiserables alongside Russell Crowe,it looks set to be a lively production.

Pantomime director Simon Thompson said Killian’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk was sosuccessful last year that the theatrewas keen to work with him again.

“Killian really understands pantomime – thetradition, the use of dialogue and what peopleare looking for in terms of pace,” he said. “Hiswriting appeals to young people because it iscontemporary but at the same time it has theright balance for adults too.”

The production stars Rachel Waring, as SnowWhite, Loraine Metcalf, as the Wicked Queen,Kyle Fraser as Prince Charming, Rik Warren as

Muddles and Russel Hicken as Nanny KnottyKnickers.

Russel said “This is my fourth year playing thepantomime dame at Sheringham so it feels likecoming home for Christmas!

“It looks like the show is going to be a lot offun. It is a great script, which had me laughingout loud from the very first moment I read it.”Rachel is also returning the venue for the festive season. Last year she played Jill in Jackand the Beanstalk.

“I started out in panto as a child so it is lovelyto be playing the Princess and it is nice to be

back in Sheringham for the second time,” sheadmitted. “I am looking forward to gettingstuck into the role of Snow White and reallymaking it my own.”

Wicked stepmother Loraine has not appearedin panto at Sheringham before but is a regular

in the Summer Rep.

“I can’t wait to get started. I haveplayed the evil character in otherpantomimes and I just love it. Allthat booing and hissing is just wonderful!” she said.

Simon said Snow White promised as much singing, dancing and greatfamily fun as last year’s Christmasshow.

“This panto will be packed witheverything you would expect - and a lot more,” he added. “There will be some fabulous surprises in theshow and some wonderful visualgags. It will be a pantomime like

no other!”

With Christmas fast approaching it is time to reflect on the past yearand to mention some of the cats that we have looked after.

With nearly 300 cats being cared for by the branch this year and over 210having been found new homes, our fosterers have been kept very busy. Twocats which came into care as strays were reunited with their owners becausethey had been chipped, five cats were returned to their owners and sadly welost six cats because they had serious health problems. Much to our delightseveral of our long term residents have been re-homed as have all of theolder cats, apart from one. Max, the oldest cat still in care is, however, notavailable for re-homing as he is a “golden oldie” cared for by Pauline, one ofour fosterers, and at nearly 19 years old is very happy to retain his positionas a Cats’ Protection cat but also continues to enjoy his freedom and homecomforts.

With so many cats, our vet bills have been considerable as all cats have a“vet check”, are vaccinated, micro chipped and in some instances blood

tested for FIV/FELV. With several cats also needing operations, X rays, etc,our fosterers are familiar faces at the vets. For example, Caramel, a dear littlekitten, who required cage rest after damaging one of her legs, and Mickeyand Jim two of the older cats who needed dentals.

Fortunately, fundraising has gone quitewell despite raising less money at two ofour major events. As well as car bootsales, street collections, bingo and tabletop sales we have also been selling someof our goods on line and these sales areproving very successful. Our final fundraising events for this year, a table topsale and a Quiz night, will have takenplace by the time you read this. Wewould like to thank everyone who hasbeen involved during the year, helpingcats in their own special way.

With Christmas now only a few daysaway we need to remember the cats in our care and make sure that everythingis safe for them. Securing the ChristmasTree (in case your kitten decides to climbit), making sure the decorations are shat-terproof and the cat does not eat anythingit should not (eg tinsel, chocolate) willensure that everyone has a very HappyChristmas and large emergency vet billswill be avoided.

We wish all our cat loving friends a veryHappy Christmas and a Healthy andProsperous New Year.

If you are looking for a cat or kittenplease give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visitwww.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for adescription and photographs of the catsbefore giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particularcat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if youare eligible for a voucher).

Veteran former club championJohn Baker rolled back the yearson Friday evening when he regained the Club’s prestigiousOver 35 title which he previouslywon nine years ago in 2004. Baker, who announced himself as a teenagerwhen he won the club’s handicap tournamentin 1984 and went on to win four club championships in the late 1980s and early1990s just had the edge over fellow veteran,Gary Spruce coming out on top 9-7, 7-9, 9-7, 10-8 in an entertaining and well contestedfinal.

The Over 35 tournament was first contested in1985 and is held in memory of former clubmember Jeff Morris who died at the club earlier that year and it was fitting that Jeff’sdaughter Debbie, was among the large and appreciative crowd who watched the matchfrom the balcony.

Baker, who Technical Director Barry Starlingsays “Still hits the ball cleaner than any otherplayer in the club”, started the match as thoughhe was going to storm to victory as he openedup a 7-0 lead in the opening game and had“game ball” at 8-3 before Spruce rallied towithin one point only for Baker to take the

game 9-7. The second game was almost a mirror image of the first as Spruce opened up a 6-2 lead as Baker served no fewer than ten times before being able to win his thirdpoint. He clawed his way back to 5-6 butSpruce always just had the edge and he drew level as he took the game 9-7.

The third game turned out to be crucial as thetwo players traded point for point with veryfew mistakes until Spruce made a couple ofvital unforced errors. With the score at 7-7 helost his serve when he “tinned” a routine backhand drop and then, more importantly, havingregained the serve and serving at 7-8 he sportingly called a double hit against himself to return the serve to Baker who went on totake the game 9-7.

The match looked to be heading for a decisivefifth game when Spruce opened up a 6-1 leadin the fourth and then twice went on to servefor the game at 8-6 before Baker regained theserve and, at the second attempt, closed out thegame 9-8 to win the match 3-1 and regain histitle.

After receiving his trophy Baker, who had tosettle for the runners-up trophy in 2008, said:“To win this title again means a lot to me sincesome thirty years ago it was Jeff Morris whoactively encouraged me to join the Fire Serviceand I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’tfor him. The final was hugely enjoyable to playin and Gary proved himself not only a terrificopponent but also a terrific sportsman when heheld his hand up at such a crucial time in thethird game.”

Intrepid campers raisemoney for Cromer RNLISue and Mick Crick, who hail from Holt near Norfolk, spent more than 12 weekstravelling around the coast of England in 2013, visiting more than 70 lifeboat sta-tions along the way. The couple also took their Labrador, Nell, along for the ridewhich started in Cromer on 24 March and finished at the same station on 1 July.Sue and Mick said they were inspired to do the trip by their many happy memoriesof their visits to lifeboat stations in the past. They carried RNLI buckets and had of-ficial stickers in the van to let people know about their challenge and were delightedto find that money was donated by people they met on campsites as well as whenthey stopped. So far they have raised approximately £1200.They left Cromer RNLI station to travel along the coast road and by the time theyhad reached Aldeburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station in Suffolk, it was snowing. Suelaughingly said, ‘There was snow on the beach, it was very cold and at one time thetemperature in the campervan was -7 degrees, but we were determined to continue.’ A special presentation was made to them on Sunday 1 December in recognition ofthe money raised through voluntary contributions given to them on their travels.

ThanksVal & John Laker, on behalf of East Anglian Air Ambulance, would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made our eighth EAAA dinner, which was held at the Constantia Cottage Restaurant East Runton on Thursday 21 November, so successful.

Thank you to the media who advertised the event, theConstantia staff, those who supplied raffle prizes and especially those who came to & supported the dinner. A big thanks also to Graham Jones who was our auctioneer for the evening.

Everyone had an enjoyable time. East Anglian Air Ambulance was presented with a cheque for £400. Watchout for the announcement of our ninth dinner in 2014.

Cromer Music Evenings have again brought toTemplewood an ensemble of young musicians ofthe highest calibre, forming the Albany PianoTrio. The Trio, after a busy summer coaching in thesouth of France, as musicians in residence atAbbeyfield House, Kew, and performing aroundthe UK in festivals as part of Live Music werenow are today in North Norfolk playing in theMusic Room at Templewood.Mozart’s Piano Trio in E major K542 opened theconcert - immediately it was very obvious thathere was an ensemble of sheer musicality, technical skill, total rapport between each player, which was maintained throughout the next two movements.

In complete contrast were two pieces by the composer Lili Boulanger, who died at the age of24 years. The two works were written just beforeher death, namely A Sad Evening and SpringMorning, both being in impressionistic style andtexture and very much influenced by Debussy’swritings with dissonant harmonies, majestic chordclusters deep in the bass register supported themost beautiful melodic lines shared by both violinand cello. The wonderful compositions surely‘painted’ the meanings of these two worksthrough the medium of music.Turina Joaquin’s Circulo Op 91 in three movements, but played through without breaks -titled Dawn Sun Up, Day Unfolding and Fiesta -all having a true Spanish flavour. Again such a descriptive work which invites the listener to

imagine what they will. Beethoven’s Piano Trio in C minor Op 1 No 3confirmed that these young artists were fully incontrol in a great variety of styles, rhythms, interpretations and whatever the composer demands. The performance of this work was superb in every movement and a testimony thatportrays the wonderful work that is going on inproducing young people with such consummateskills. Their efforts today resulted in rapturous applausewhich was answered with an encore - Penniesfrom Heaven - which included a 16 bar improvi-sation (violin) in the style of the great StefanGrappelli - wonderful indeed!

Masked Winners RevealedThe Norfolk Pigeon Loft ran a fun festive competition, to decorate amasquerade mask.Katie from the NPL asked, Olly Day, Martyn James and Eddie Bushell, stars of the Cromer Christmas Show at the Pavilion Theatre, to judge theentries. They all expressed their amazement at the skill and enthusiasmfrom participants. As i walked into the Pavilion I was greeted by the very high spirits ofthe three gentlemen, who had just finished a performance of the Christ-mas show and were still in full costume looking very dapper. The atmos-phere was festive and jolly as they poured over the superbly decoratedmasks. Some reflected the season and were very Christmassy, otherswere very glamorous and others looked as though they belonged in theRio carnival!

The decision was eventually and difficultly made. To give the winnersmasks full credit the Gents decided to don them, and Eddie looked readyto sing on Broadway in third place winner’s Trinity Sayer, aged 11 fromCromer festive ‘Merry X-mas’ mask. Martyn conjured a woodland illu-sion as the ‘Green Man’ in second place winners mask Amy Lawson, aged 10 from West Runton , and Olly magically turned into a butterflywith the winning mask of Evie Richardson, aged 8 from North Wal-sham.The winners received goody bags ranging from £10 - £20 from the Nor-folk Pigeon Loft, the place for that perfect fashion accessory! All masks can be seen displayed in the NPL’s Christmas window, andOlly, Martyn, and Eddies talents can be seen at Cromer pavilion theatreall throughout December.Norfolk Pigeon Loft, 22 Church Street, Cromer open mon-sat 9:30-5:00

Dear Margaret,I am saddened and angry to hear that a popular and busy little store in Cromer High Street is to close in favour of a national chain store. What makes it even worse is that the national clothing store already has premises in Cromer and ismerely seeking to expand, so we are, in fact, losing a shop in thehigh street. We cannot afford to do this. Moreover, I have just read recently in the national press that property in small townswith access to small shops actually commands higher prices.

But my real annoyance is that this shop was friendly, useful andcheerful and to see it go is a real loss to Cromer, its visitors andthe employees.

Yours sincerely,Maureen Edwards

OPEN every day until ChristmasOPEN every day until Christmas

Cute, Cuddly and Affordablethe headline refers to the relativelynew shop that opened in West streetback in august. three months on andowner brenda taylor can happily saythat all is going well.

Cute & Cuddly is specialising in recyclinggood quality clothes, toys and accessories especially for babies and young children.Brenda was inspired by her daughter. "My daughter had her third girl, but wasstruggling to buy clothes for her. There's nosecond hand shop in Cromer, which wouldbe really useful for young mothers to exchange, buy or sell clothes and toys that are no longer needed but perfectly good quality," commented Brenda.

"I wanted to get back to work after looking after my partner Steve during his illness, and thisseemed like a really good idea."

The shop is crammed with useful items from buggies to cot bumpers. The cot bumpers are madeby Brenda's sister Monica, who also does any repairs that are needed, being a dab hand with asewing or knitting needle.

"We will try to help everyone, to get good quality at an affordable price, so necessary in thesetough economic times." So true, there's a telephone number on the door, and even if you callwhen closed Brenda will try to help out as she did recently. "I also use local suppliers where I canfor almost everything from flyers to new stock."

In December, Cute & Cuddly will open seven days a week in the run-up to Christmas, before taking a break until January 2nd, and then reverting to 'Winter hours' of 10am-5pm, (closed onWednesdays and Sundays).

Need good quality items for your kiddies at fair price? Then pop in and tell Brenda what youneed, even if not in stock she will try to find it for you.

Cromer WI Our November meeting is also our Annual Meeting so before the seriousstage we were entertained by our own Drama Group ‘The ShoestringPlayers’. We enjoyed a review of poems, readings and even Christmascracker jokes. There was a reading of an AA Milne poem about KingJohn, Glenice Knight gave a great rendition of ‘Old Sams Christmas

Pudding’, Penny Jeffries told a lovely Nativity Tale and Judy Roberts caused a laugh dressed asthe unwanted fairy replaced by a flashing rocket. Thanks went to Trish Loth and Cheryl Tait forthis production of ‘40 Days to Christmas’. After tea we had our normal meeting combined withthe Annual Meeting. Our President Miriam Ireland had to step down and an election took placeand Glenice Knight was voted on as our new President. Thanks were given to Miriam for all herhard work over the last three years. Departing members of the committee were presented with floral thank you’s. Pat Fisher, whose son in law, completed a trip to the base camp at Everest, brought in some photographs of the event. Many members had sponsored him. Hazel Patricksonwon the competition for a key ring and for accumulating the most points in the competition overthe year a trophy went to Jill Betz. Arrangements were discussed for a visit to Ely Cathedral for a Christmas Craft Fayre and a group Carol Service in Sheringham.
