The locals among you will probably already be aware of the Alan Partridge fever that has gripped North Norfolk recently, reports Carla Marfleet.. The fictional Norfolk based radio DJ, Alan Partridge, played and created by Steve Coogan, is making the leap from his TV series to the big screen! And where better to set a chase and gun fight sequence, than Cromer Pier! One of the producers of the film, Kevin Loader said "Cromer Pier is such a gorgeous, historic, architectural landmark. We felt that to do the movement to the big screen justice we needed something that would register properly cinematically and I think Cromer Pier will do that job brilliantly." A 140 strong film crew have been working hard (and trying to keep warm!) on the pier for 5 days from Saturday 23rd to Wednesday 27th February. It was a very interesting and exciting time for the staff on the pier, as we were able to catch a glance of the stars, and get a great insight in to the making of a real British film. It also proved a little difficult as we in the Box Office did end up getting trapped inside a few times while they filmed right outside our door, which I must admit, had us slightly distracted from our computers to watch the filming! It was fascinating to see the amount of time they take setting up, and how many takes they shoot, for a shot that may only last seconds in the final edit. You can begin to see why films cost so much! We still managed in the box office, taking phone and internet bookings, despite the pier being closed to the public from Sunday to Tuesday. We all brought our packed lunches too for when we were trapped in! You may have seen some interesting changes to the pier during the filming. Continued on page 6... Partridge on the PierContinued from front cover...You may have even worried that the theatre had gone a little ‘high brow’ with posters forShakespeare plays in the box office windows. Or that you would be unable to exit the pier aftera show as gates had been installed. These were all set dressings for the film. The gates at thefront of the pier featured in the script, yet normally we have no gates. The art team installedthem, painted and aged them so that they looked like there had always been there. It’s all veryclever! All of our posters had to be replaced by pretend shows for copyright reasons. (We wereexpecting a few phone calls from people trying to book for Hamlet!) but don’t worry ourspring/summer season will run as scheduled in your latest Cromer Pier Live brochure. Thewhite shelters on the pier were also transformed into a shooting gallery and a coconut shy. They looked great and left us wanting to keep them!

The scene being shot on the pier saw a police chase sequence and even gun fire. The top of theslopes outside the Hotel De Paris was filled with police and their cars, blue lights flashing andall. These were mostly all extras and fake police cars, but there were some real police aroundto help keep people from coming on to the pier or slopes. We enjoyed a good game of ‘Spot thereal police man’ through the windows in the office.

All in all it was a great experience for us and Norfolk in general. Cromer's mayor, GwendolineSmith, said use of the locations will attract visitors and be "good for the economy". And with140 people descending on Cromer in the winter it has been good business for the local hotelstoo, in a usually quite season. Filming is also taking place in Sheringham and Norwich, so benefiting the wider area also.

So if you are a fan of Alan Partridge, or even if you are not. The film is due for release in cinemas in August. They should be sets for good returns at the box office, as most of the residents of Cromer will go just to see the pier!

It is great that we can be involved in something like this and in so doing supporting the talented British film industry. And of course Norfolk and our Pier will look beautiful up on the big screen. It’s enough to make you quite proud.

We have a great Easter coming up at theGrove, with a Good Friday Fish Night, theEaster Egg Hunt on Saturday (perfect for kids)and a superb selection of best Icarus Hines’roasts for Sunday lunch – phone to book on01263512412.

This is a lovely starter that’s extremely popular whenever it’s on, and will certainly be featuring throughout the Easter period. When it first appeared the manager made asmall mistake on the menu, and word spreadthat The Grove was serving the most delicioushoi-sin Guck (much to the amusement of bothour diners and our front-of-house staff). However, this Gressingham duck is the bestaround and I love cooking with it.

Serves twoIngredients:2 Gressingham duck legs

(available at Icarus Hines)1 small jar of duck fat1 white onion (diced)

1 carrot (diced)1 leek (diced)1 stick celery (sliced)1 litre vegetable oil20g Chinese five spice20g-35g Jubberwacky plum sauce (available at Cromer Farm and Health Shop)to serve-I spring onion finely sliced200g cucumber (diced)

Method:Take both duck legs and trim around thetop of the leg joint to remove the tendons. This will ensure the duck stays nice andtender thoroughout the cooking process.Removing the tendon makes it less likelyfor the leg to contract throughout thecooking process, keeping it nice and tender.Place all the duck, the vegetables, the oiland duck fat in a saucepan and simmer for

six hours on a low heat - confiting theduck in the process. The oil will be very hot so remove the duck with a pair of tongs and drain the excess oil in acolander or cooling rack. Once the duck has cooled a little (but notall the way) strip, discard any fat andshred. Put the duck on a roasting tray and sprinkle the Chinese five spices over. Roast until the duck is crispy, and whilestill warm add the delicious Jubberwackyplum sauce.

This can be served with your spring onionand cucumber as a salad, or you couldeven make some pancakes to go with it.

The best thing about this dish is you now havethe remaining oil and duck fat for roasting yourpotatoes for your Easter Sunday lunch (if youhaven’t booked to have it with us!)

The exhibition looks at the history of souvenirs andconsiders what makes objects special to us. Anevent held on the 23 February encouraged visitorsto bring in their own mementos, especially anystraw donkeys! The chosen highlights from this dayare now on display alongside their personal stories.

Sadly no donkeys appeared but an interesting variety of souvenirs were discovered. These includeKeith Wiles’ beautiful Cromer related milk jug,Cromer lifeboat crew member Paul Russell’s

collection of RNLI souvenirs and souvenir secretary Victor Brett’s1960s lifeboat man doll.

A brass ‘Escape’ sign salvaged from the SS. Teddington and mountedupon a carved wooden block also forms part of the exhibition. The Teddington was a steamship attacked by German aircraft in 1941. The plaque was retrieved from the ship by a fireman, given toJack Rounce from the lifeboat committee andlater donated to the museum. The plaque hasbecome a decorative ornament showing howevents are commemorated.

Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick willmake an entertaining visit for all the family andincludes plenty of child friendly activities. There will be dressing up hats, an interactiveSeaside Sally, a Punch and Judy theatre and visitors will be able to design their own postcard.

Drop-in creative sessions will also run on Saturday 9 and Saturday 16April. These will take place throughout the day between 10am and 4pm.Visitors will be able to create their own Seaside Sallys which consist ofdecorated frames with peep-holes for the face. It will be a real chancefor children, and their parents, to get crafty.

Museum Manager Jacqui Palmer said: ‘This is a very exciting exhibitionwhich displays the RNLI collection alongside souvenirs from the public. We look forward to hearing people’s responses and hope they will find itinteractive and engaging.’

Rebecca Fletcher, Exhibitions Assistant said: ‘It has been great to workon this exhibition especially as it has involved so many wonderful stories. I hope it will prove enjoyable for all.’

Admission to the museum is free, but donations are always appreciated. Please remember that the museum is closed on Mondays. For further information please visit www.rnli.org/henryblogg.

Now in its second year, Rock Bodham was setup to showcase local live music from all overNorfolk and this year features eight live bands.Rock Bodham, which takes place on Sunday21 July on Bodham Playing Field, is part ofBodham Big Weekend which runs from theevening of Friday 19 July through to Sundayafternoon 21 July with a feast of activities forall the family.

The first Bodham Big Weekend, set up by Chairman Peter Bedell and a team of community stalwarts, took place in 2008 and coupled the original Village Fete alongsidean evening of live music.

Peter said ‘In 2012 Rock Bodham was formedas part of Bodham Big Weekend and the rest is history. The Big Weekend has gone fromstrength to strength and 2012 was the largestevent in Bodham's History. 2013? We can'twait!’

Bodham Big Weekend Sunday Funday beginsat 12noon and is followed by Rock Bodhamwhich runs from 4pm – 11pm on 21 July. RockBodham was started by local music promoterBen Carpenter, Callum Ringer and Peter Bedell to expand Bodham Big Weekend and to showcase hidden talents from across Norfolk.

This year’s line up includes The Yows Yows,BrickRed Cardio, Drop the Clutch, Jake

Morrell, Kamikaze Radio, The Wreckoning,Johnny Romance and the Lovers, JackDanieland DJ Hagster.

In 2012 six bands played to over 800 people.Darryl Bliss, drummer from Drop the Clutchwho also played in 2012 said ‘It was great tobe a part of Rock Bodham last year and we'rereally chuffed to be invited back again thissummer. When you spend your time playinglate at night in pubs and clubs you don't get toplay to such a mixed audience, which for usmakes this a cracking event. It's an ideal opportunity for local people to see some amazing local talent too, and maybe it will influence some of the youngsters to take up an instrument, get practicing, join a band andget on stage’

It is hoped that in 2013, with an expanded lineup of live music, Rock Bodham will be evenmore successful for the village. With ticketprices only £2 for adults and free for U12s it isa fabulous event for all the family to enjoy. ABBQ and bar will be available from 12 noon.Organiser Ben Carpenter said ‘Rock Bodhamis dedicated to the local music scene givingbands a chance to get a feel of what it's like toplay a mini festival. All acts and volunteershave given their time up for free. So if you area fan of entertainment and live music then thisis for you, it truly is a wonderful event, so be

sure to come alongand support it’

Monies raised overthe whole weekendwill go towards Bodham villagecauses such as thePlaying Field, theChurch and VillageHall as well as a mealfor the village OAPsand a Children’sChristmas Party. Adonation will also bemade to Holt FirstResponders whocover the event.

The audience can expect a day filledwith entertainmentand live music from avariety of different acts, with feedback from2012 overwhelmingly positive, organisers arelooking forward to this year’s event. CeridwenSmee who attended in 2012 said “having witnessed the vibrant, eclectic mix of fantasticlive music I was thrilled to have attended thejam packed day set in some of Norfolk’s most beautiful countryside. Unique, fun and appealing to all ages it is amazing value formoney”.

Ceridwen went on to say ‘I simply can’t waitto rock it out this year with my family and I shall not hesitate to rave to others and spreading the word that Rock Bodham 2013will most definitely be one event not to miss!’

Rock Bodham is sponsored by Starlings Toymaster for the second year running. JonStarling from Starlings Toymaster said aboutthe event ‘it was such a popular event last yearI can see this year being even bigger. Not onlyare we sponsoring because the event raisesmoney for local causes but because the eventlets lots of up and coming local talent play abig stage which they otherwise wouldn’t getthe chance to do. Being a musician myself Iunderstand how important this is. We’re reallyexcited about being part of this mini festival!’The event is also sponsored by SandersCoaches who will be putting on a bus to getpeople home after Rock Bodham. From11.15pm Sanders Coaches will be runningbuses for only £1 to Cromer, Sheringham andHolt.

Other sponsors for both the Big Weekend and Rock Bodham include The Crown Inn,Sheringham, CT Baker, Graphic Edge Crayford & Abbs and local residents.

Grants for the Arts awards are for activities carried out over a set periodand which engage people in England inarts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out theirwork. Such support is crucial to the success of this project and the Choral Society is now seeking additional grantsand sponsorship to cover the remainingcosts.

The new work will be performed for thefirst time in 2014 to commemorate thecentenary of the outbreak of WW1.Based upon Edith Cavell’s own notesand annotations in her personal copy ofThomas a Kempis’ Of the Imitation ofChrist, the composition will be largescale choral work with solo soprano, chorus, children’s choir and chamber orchestra and organ. We plan to have thefirst performance on Saturday 12 July 2014 in Norwich Cathedral where Edith Cavellis buried and remembered especially on the anniversary of her death/execution in 1915. We are delighted to have the support and encouragement of the Dean and Precentor atthe Cathedral as well as the local Edith Cavellcommemoration committee. This premiere performance will provide a unique way ofcommemorating the outbreak of the Great War by recalling the life and faith of Norfolk’scourageous WW1 heroine.

It is planned that the performers will includethe celebrated soprano, Elin Manahan Thomas, and the English Chamber Orchestra. The children’s choir will be provided by studentsattending the international Britten MusicCourse at Gresham’s.

Following the premiere performance in Norwich there will be a special performance in St Peter’s Church Sheringham on Remembrance weekend 2014. We plan to liaise closely with veterans associations andother groups to ensure that this is a significant

occasion. There is already the possibility offurther performances in 2015 in Norwich andPeterborough to mark the centenary of EdithCavell’s execution.

During the development process Patrick Haweswill hold a workshop in May 2014 at the AudenTheatre in Holt for adults and school children. He will talk about the composition processand provide the opportunity for thosepresent to sing someof his newly composed music.Patrick Hawes who is ambassador for The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts is probably best known for composing the Highgrove Suite for Prince Charles’sixtieth birthday.

Nathan Waring, Musical Director, said “ThisArts Council England funding makes it possible for us to move ahead with a tremendously exciting opportunity for ourchoral society here in north Norfolk .

As the Society celebrates its 80th anniversary we prepare to break freshground. This is definitely a once in a life-time opportunity and we are hugelyhonoured that Patrick Hawes has chosento work with us. As a community choirwe intend to involve as many local people as possible in this project. I amparticularly pleased that Patrick intendsto involve a children’s choir alongsidethe approx. 100 adult singers in ourchoir. We expect there to be very closecollaboration between Patrick Hawes,SCCS and Gresham’s throughout thecomposition, rehearsal and performanceprocess.”

It is the intention that the new work will be published and made extensivelyavailable to other choirs in the hope that it will be widely performed elsewhere throughout the four year

WW1 commemoration programme. There arealso plans to record the work so that it canreach a wide audience through the likes of classic FM where Patrick Hawes has an extensive following having been composer in residence for several years.

Taller cultivars are suitablefor mixed or herbaceous borders, the smallercultivars for rock gardens, raised beds andtroughs and water irises for the margins ofpools and streams.

At this time of year it is the brave, bright flowers of the early flowering bulbous irisesthat bring life to the gardens. Whatever theweather in late winter or early spring clumps of these brave, bright flowers are ideal for banishing the winter blues. To see them poking

through a blanket of snow is a joy. They arequite simply indispensable and fortunately relatively cheap and widely available either asdry bulbs to plant in early autumn or growingin pots at this time of the year, all ready tobloom.

Recommended varieties include‘George’. Sturdy rich purple flowers are

borne in early spring. 12cm.‘Harmony’. Royal –blue flowers with

a yellow central mark on each fall. 10-15 cm.

‘Major’. Deep blue flowers‘Joyce’. Deep sky-blue flowers‘Iris danfordiae’. Yellow flowers with

greenish yellow markings on the fall.‘Katharine Hodgkin’. Delicately patterned

blue flowers with yellow and blue marks on the fall.

‘Cantab’. Pale blue flowers with deeper blue falls, each with a yellow crest.

‘J.S.Dijt’. Reddish-purple flowers with a central orange mark on each fall.

(Falls are the reflexed outer petals)

The early irises associate well with early crocuses and can be used in groups underneathdeciduous shrubs such as Daphne mezereum, the fragrant Chimonanthus praecox and thewinter noneysuckle Lonicera x purpusii. The

irises are not heavily scented and would combine well with winter-flowering violas in containers.

Cultivation notes• Grow in well – drained, neutral or

slightly alkaline soil in full sun.• Keep just moist during dormant period.• After flowering, feed with a high potash

fertiliser to encourage large bulbs to form• Slugs and snails may be a problem, as may

grey mould and thrips.• Bulbs planted in potscan be brought into

the house to flower but not until the buds show colour to avoid them drying out.

• Most of these bulbs usually flower well, but after flowering once, some break up into bulblets of varying sizes. The largest of these may take one or two years before they get to flowering size, and the smallest may take twice as long.

Propagation• Plant Reticula bulbs 5-10 cm apart at a

depth twice the height of the bulb, or deeper.

• Lift and separate bulbsin mid-summer to early autumn.

• Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn or spring.

Grumpy Old Man- Medical AffairsI have had occasion to visit both the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and the new Cromer Hospital variously in recent times. What a contrast they represent.

The car park at Cromer is always unexpectedlyempty perhaps because you have to buy threehours time for two quid, even if you are onlynipping in for an x-ray or a blood sample, sothe road outside is cluttered with vehicles.

Arrive at Norwich Hospital and it is like tryingto park near the football ground on match day.

Our enormous county hospital is overwhelmedwith unremitting demand day and nightwhereas Cromer Hospital is in reality a parttime very posh clinic dealing in the main withblood sampling and x-rays, and takes no strainoff the Norfolk & Norwich.

Still, there it is, newly built and very imposing, but A&E and hospital beds are still 30 milesaway from us coastal dwellers who still face a long and uncertain wait for an ambulance to get us to Norwich. It is no fun – I have madethe trip.

What amazed me most having arrived at A&Ewas that our ambulance crew were idle for anhour before being freed only after booking in their patient. As I recall there were six ambulances crews queuing up at the same time, all kicking their heels. If the system allowedthem to hand over on arrival to a third party todeal with the waiting time they could load on a new trolley and get back on standby. Toosimple, I suppose.

Trying to change the NHS is difficult and inefficiency is perpetuated because of apathy. My daughter, 25 years withthe NHS, highly qualifiedand experienced, is wastingher skills now, forced todeputise for a departmenthead who has been onleave for over three years(not in Norfolk). She regularly gets her reportsand forms completed on time, but as all theother departments are less efficient, she has, unbelievably, been asked to make late returnsso as not to show the other laggards up.

The same principle applies here as GP surgeries no longer take blood samples, butissue an instruction for patients to trail off to Cromer Hospital instead, which gives theplace work, but wastes time and makes muchinconvenience for patients. Will it change? Don’t bet on it …

Why worm our pets?Spring is fast approaching, the daffodils will soon be flowering, the grass will needcutting and the WORM EGGS will be hatching! Yes, the WORM EGGS!The large amount of dog mess seen on the streets of our towns over the wintermonths will start becoming a real health issue as the weather warms up. One dogcan pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, that’s a lot of eggs going bythe amount of faeces on the streets. The council will issue on the spot fines of £80to anyone caught leaving dog mess in a ‘scoop the poop’ designated area, with court action if the fine is unpaid.Heavy worm burdens may cause anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting and malnutrition. There is also significant risk to humanhealth when dealing with Toxocara Canis (dog Round Worm) as this worm may be transferred to humans by poor hygieneafter contact with your pet, especially if your dog likes to lick your face and hands. Worm eggs in the environment maysurvive for many years, when in the larval form they are infectious to animals and humans. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) recommends a MINIMUM worming frequency of at least every3 months for dogs and cats or monthly treatments in higher risk situations (i.e. if your pet scavenges/hunts or is inclose contact with children). Regular worming of your pet is a fundamental part of responsible pet ownership as well aspicking up after your dog in public places. With our March promotion at Miramar Vets, we are trying to encourage thedog and cat owners of North Norfolk to worm their pets by offering15% off worming tablets throughout the month.Pets need to be registered with the surgery and an accurate body weight mustbe recorded on their record card.New clients will need an appointment with the nurse before treatment can bedispensed. You will receive a reminder through the post when your next treat-ment is due. We also have some poo bags and dispensers to give away to en-courage owners to pick up after their pets for a cleaner, healthier town. There is limited stock so hurry along to the practice for your freebie.

We recently had to have three cats put to sleep because they had FIP, afatal disease which is caused by the feline corona virus. Infection withcorona virus is very common in cats but generally does not cause anyproblems, other than mild self-limiting diarrhoea. It is only when thevirus changes (which does not happen often) that it mutates and causesFIP. The corona virus itself is common, and experts believe that between25 to 40 per cent of household pets are infected. The virus is shed in faeces and cats become infected when grooming or eating. Although a cat may be infected with the virus it does not mean it will mutate andthat the cat will develop FIP; in fact the number that do is very small. The reason why this happens is not clear and there are several factorswhich could be involved

This is the first time we have had any experience of FIP and it was heart-breaking to lose them. Two were young cats, littermates, which hadjoined us from a feral colony. One other kitten from the litter is still inour care and will stay with us until we have the all clear to re-home him.Although there is no blood test whichcan indicate whether or not a cat has FIPwe can check for the corona virus. An-other kitten from the same litter found ahome before these three came into careand his owner was informed. She de-cided to have him blood tested to see ifhe had the virus and his blood tests cameback negative. The other cat in carewhich had FIP was much older and came to us from a multi cat household.Fortunately the other cats which came in with him are both fit and well.

On a happier note we were delighted to

be nominated as one of the “Community Matters Charities” for Februaryat our new Waitrose Store and have now been advised that, thanks to their customers putting their tokens in our box, we will be receiving a donation of £318. If you put your tokens in our box, we thank you.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalshamfor a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a callon the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Perhaps deep inside you there is an undiscovered skill for playing a brass bandinstrument, just waiting to burst forth. Well now is your opportunity to find out!

On Saturday 6th April The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band have an open day at St Peters Church Hall, Sheringham. From10am to 4pm members of the band will bethere to answer any questions you may haveabout playing in a brass band. Further more, when you pop in you can, if you wish, have ‘a blow’ of one or more of the instruments, from the cornet, the smallest instrument in theband, up to the one of the big basses. Why nottap or rattle something in the kitchen section -percussion to you and me, drums, cymbals andthings like that. You can even have a cup oftea or coffee and a biscuit.

However, on the other hand, you might be aone time player who remembers those pastdays when playing along with fellow musicianswas fun, and have been wishing you couldenjoy those days over again. Well, wish nomore, come and enjoy again the pleasure ofholding a cornet, or wonder how you everlifted a B flat bass. We will look forward toseeing you.

But it does not end there, The Cromer AndSheringham Brass Band will be appearing from7.30 pm in St Peters Church that evening, toplay a selection of popular pieces. There is no entry charge, we just ask that, if you haveenjoyed yourselves, you make a contribution to the retirement collection.

The band looks forward to seeing you.

Might you have a hidden talent?

MORE MUSIC MAESTRO PLEASE!Although we are surrounded by the most amazing music on our radios, TVs, iPods and tablets, there are still lots of people who like to hear quality LIVE music, which is probably why the Briston Organ Shows always prove so popular! The next show is on Friday 22 March at the Copeman Centre, Briston, and will feature the very popular Jon Smith. John plays organ, keyboards, piano, melodica, and sings as well (but not all at the same time!) and always attractslarge crowds to his performances, probably because he plays everything from pops to classics -and everything in between too - and he also has a great sense of humour as well!

As with all the Briston Shows, proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments will benefit the Hall'songoing improvements. The show starts at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). Tickets are £6 each (juniorshalf price) and you can book yours by calling Carol on 01263 860844. We advise advance book-ing, as tickets sell out quite quickly.

Overstrand Evening WIWith the cold and icy weather in January our meeting was cancelled and theplanned guided walk postponed a week. Although it was raining on the morn-ing we set off across the cliff tops on the walk, this soon cleared and following refreshments inCromer, the group enjoyed a leisurely stroll back along the beach in the sunshine.

Dog trainer Barbara Swarbrick from Animal Magic was the speaker at our February meeting. After explaining Animal Magic’s training ethos Barbara answered questions from members andprovided a practical training demonstration with assistance from a member’s pet dog.

On 20 March Jacqui Palmer will talk about Henry Blogg and The History of Cromer Lifeboatsand on 5 April starting at 10.30am from the Foundry Arms in Northrepps, there will be a guidedcircular round the village, taking in points of interest. Our monthly meetings commence at 7.30p.m. in the Parish Hall in The Londs. Visitors are always most welcome.

Supporting your local traders has a really positive impact on your localeconomy. The retail champion campaign data below:For every £1 you spend with a local, independent business, between50p-70p circulates back into your local economy. Shopping locally sup-ports local traders, their suppliers and the people they depend on to runtheir businesses. Buying locally boosts your local economy, rebuildingconfidence in the community, enabling local businesses to prosper andgrow.Shopping online or out-of-town may save you a little time but for every£1 you spend, only 5p trickles back into your local economy. When youshop with your local independents you are doing ‘your bit’ to keep yourhigh street, town or village centre ‘open for business’..Sadly it really is a case of ‘use it or lose it’.So, Thank You for choosing to spend with us this Easter, we look for-ward to seeing you again soon.
