Ian Hall, General Manager of Norfolk’s iconicCromer Pier is set to move to pastures newafter seven years at the helm of one ofNorfolk’s best known landmarks and for Openwide Coastal, the company that operatesthe attraction on behalf of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), the search is on for Ian’s replacement.

During Ian’s time at the pier he has seen itchange from a summer season visit withouteven a cup of tea available for up to fivemonths of the winter to becoming an all yearround attraction with a diary of shows and alevel of support and customer loyalty that is the envy of many other theatres.

Ian has this to say about his impending departure next month “I am sorry to be leavingCromer and my biggest regret will be to leavebehind the many friends, colleagues and wonderful people that I have met and whofrom the start made me feel so welcome. Thepier is an incredible place to work each day, thelocation is fabulous and it has been an honourto be involved with the continuing success of the famous end-of-the-pier show SeasideSpecial. The pier team under Openwide management has lots of fresh and exciting initiatives underway to ensure that the businessmoves forward and has even more appeal to itscustomers. I feel strongly that the future for thepier is a very bright one.

“With the current major refurbishment of thepier on target and due to be completed this year

it is clear that NNDC, the owner of the pier, sees a sustainable and thriving future for thepier too. An exciting job opportunity combinedwith family reasons now take meaway from Cromer, but I lookforward to being one of the mil-lions of people who enjoy theirvisits in the years to come.”

Steve Cutbush, Managing Director of Openwide, is equallyenthusiastic about the future ofthe pier. With these excitingprospects in mind he will be enlisting Ian’s help during his remaining time in Cromer toseek a suitable replacement tolead this much-loved venue. Hewishes Ian every success for thefuture.

John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisureand Cultural Services, said “Weare very sorry to hear that Ianwill be leaving Cromer Pier. Hehas not only acted as anexcellent link betweenthe District Council, which owns the pier, and his employers,Openwide Coastal, whomanage the PavilionTheatre and other business outlets on it,

his work has also ensured that Cromer Pier, and especially the iconic Seaside Specialshows, remain incredibly popular and some-thing we are all very proud to be associated with. His successor will have a hard act to follow.

At our February meeting Ian Groves gave a talk on “Deserted Villages in Norfolk”.There are over 3000 deserted villages inBritain and 245 of these are in Norfolk. There are relatively few deserted villages in North Norfolk as the good soils in thearea meant that villages could generallythrive but in Breckland there are manymainly because of the very thin soils.

The estate maps produced from the 17th century onwards are a good source for thoseseeking deserted villages. The easiest way ofseeking them out today is by looking at GoogleEarth. The Archaeology Unit at Gressenhall

regularly receives information from individualsabout possible sites apparently.

What do deserted villages look like? Well, mainly lumps and bumps in the landscape it seems although closer investigation may provide signs of tracks, house platforms, roadswhich seem to go nowhere or field boundaries.Pudding Norton and Godwich have these features.

Why were villages deserted? Only one in Norfolk, Little Ringstead near Fakenham, has positively been shown to have been deserted because of the Black Death. It was a contributory factor in the decline of many

villages but led to thedesertion of very few.Climate change iscertainly a factor. The 14th century was

very wet indeed, it seems, and this was fol-lowed by a mini ice age that lasted until about1800. These were more likely to lead to deser-tion than the Black Death. Landowners are themain factor for the decline of villages in many areas. TheTownshends at Raynham Hall bought up landas it became available in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Fermoys at East Barshamcleared villages to make way for sheep whilethe Walpoles at Houghton Hall movedHoughton when they were extending the parkland on their estate. Fortunately they built New Houghton as a replacement. Morerecently, of course, the Ministry of Defencecleared the villages of West Tofts and Tottington to make way for the Stanta BattleArea during the Second World War.

Cromer Museum organises visits to archaeological sites in the course of the yearand anyone interested should contact the museum for details of this year’s visits.

Spring into action forMother’s DayAs Mother’s Day approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think about new mothers and babies when they makea date to give blood.

Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures inhospitals. In addition to accident and emergency situations, blood isoften essential to new mothers during or after pregnancy. Premature babies may often need a blood transfusion as well, to replace the bloodthat is taken for essential testing as premature babies do not make manynew blood cells in the first few weeks after birth.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, Derek Carr, said “During this month we would like people to think about not only their own mother, but also the mothers and families they can help with their blood donation. As one donation can help threeadults or seven babies, donors really can make a difference and help tosave a life. We have made it through the winter months due to the dedication of our existing blood donors, but the need for blood doesn’t stop and we still need donors to come forward throughout the year.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) andin general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming ablood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated inthe last two years.

For more information, to book an appointment or to find a local blooddonor session please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Now that most people who require neutering vouchers contact us on the “neutering line” most of the calls which Stephanie receives are for people looking for a new cat to join their family or for cats to come intocare. However, a high proportion of the calls relating to cats to come in relate to “strays” and I use this term loosely as so very often the catconcerned has a home not too many doors away from the caller.Stephanie was recently contacted by someone who had been feeding a stray for several weeks and was assured that neighbours had been contacted to check it had not got a home in the area. When a space became available Josh came into care and fortunately for him his fosterer checked to see if he had been micro-chipped (this is normal procedure with all strays that come into care). A few phone calls later we were able to reunite Josh with his family, who lived just a few doorsaway from the person who had handed him into care. Unfortunately theyhad misguidedly started to feed him when he was passing through theirgarden. They have now been advised not to encourage Josh to stray fromhis home by offering him food. We do now micro-chip all our cats.

Kittens may also be chipped depending on their age, or canhave this done when they go fortheir second vaccination. Thosealready chipped when theycome into care are registered totheir new owners when theyleave for their new homes. Thisgives them a better chance ofbeing reunited with their familyshould they go missing. If youhave not had your cat chippedplease consider doing so.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalshamfor a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a callon the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

On Friday 25 January Fireworks committeeChairman Jim Bond and four other judgeshad the pleasure of judging the entries to the first New Year’s Day Fireworks photography competition. In total over 169 entries werereceived from across England. The judges, who also included EDP Photographer Antony Kelly, fireworks committee member Tony Shipp, Manager ofBennetts Simon Morton and photographerDavid Morris, were impressed by the veryhigh standard of entries. Antony Kelly said “I was really impressedwith the quality of photos. Photographingfireworks well is not an easy task, so to getso many outstanding entries was great tosee. Although that did make choosing threewinners very difficult”.First place went to Mark Bunning fromWatton in Norfolk. Mark who was visitingCromer especially to see the fireworks is a regular visitor to the town. Mark said “I love the opportunities Cromer gives meto take fantastic photos”. Mark’s winningimage will also be transformed into the official event poster for 2014 and he also receives a Panasonic Lumix TZ30 cameraprize donated by electrical store Bennetts. Mark said “Winning the photo competition is a great feeling, knowing that other peopleenjoy the images I take. I have always beeninto photography from an early age, alwaystrying new techniques and trying to capturenew ways to view the world”.Manager of Bennetts in Cromer, Simon Mortonsaid “The Panasonic camera we have donatedfor first prize is an item we highly recommendin store. It has been a real pleasure being involved in the sponsoring and judging of thecompetition this year. As an East Anglian basedcompany Bennetts does like to offer support tolocal community projects”.“The number of entries, quality of pictures

and the evident talent made the judging quite adifficult process. I think the three winners werewell deserved and it was particularly rewardingto see after they were chosen how far afield thewinners were. It's exactly what you wouldhope for the Fireworks event to do, draw people from near and far to our lovely town”.Judge Antony Kelly said of the winning image“It has everything right about it. The composi-tion is perfect, it shows the crowds on the

beach, and all of the fireworks are clearlyshown. Technically it is faultless”.

Entries to the competition were received fromas far and wide as Lancashire, Suffolk, Buck-inghamshire, Surrey and locations across Nor-folk proving just how popular the event is tovisitors and locals alike.Second prize went to Katherine Hodgson from Upton in Norfolk. Katherine, 20, who is currently studying mathematics at the University ofSheffield, said “I do photography in my freetime and am currently partway through my second 365 project (taking a photo every dayfor a year). For this reason, I am rarely withoutmy camera, and use it as often as I can. I’m

thrilled to have come second. Photography is amuch-loved hobby of mine and the fact that ithas placed in a competition is amazing!”Judge David Morris said Katherine’s photo “Ablood-red sky full of excitement and a great close up on the crowd. You really feellike you’re there in the middle of the action.Terrific shot”.

Third prize went to Patrick Hudgell fromAmersham in Buckinghamshire who is a fre-

quent visitor to North Norfolk and has at-tended the fireworks for a few years.Patrick said “It is such a superb show thatwe now try to come every New Year. I ama keen photographer and found it a greatchallenge to try and capture the amazingspectacle of the fireworks going off overthe sea while all the spectators line thebeach and sea wall. I am delighted that thejudges like my image. I am an active mem-ber of our local photography club, Amer-sham Photographic Society, and wasdelighted when the same image wasawarded first place in this month's clubcompetition”.David Morris said of Patrick’s shot “This is

a considered photograph, further away and including parts of the town, it works really welland has a terrific sense of scale. And that riotof colour on the pier shows the photographerknew just when to press the shutter”.The competition, which was launched to markthe 14th New Year’s Day fireworks, has beenhailed as a fabulous success. Firework commit-tee member Tony Shipp said “contestants have obviously put a lot ofthought into composing their pictures. Everycontestant should be proud of the photographsthey have entered”.All the entries can currently be viewed onthe events Facebook page ‘New Year’s DayFireworks, Cromer’.

Emms Stems at Southrepps is muchmore than a florist.

Yes they do specialise in floral displays of allkinds - for Weddings, Funerals and special occasions such as the up-coming Mother's Day.As well they are part of the Eflorist network socan make UK and International arrangementsas well as delivering locally across North Norfolk. However they have many lovelyhandmade items from local suppliers and from far afield too.

"We have unique gifts, many from local suppliers such as 'Wooden It Be Lovely' whomake handmade seasonal items such as heartsfor Valentine's Day, handmade bunting anditems with a seaside theme."

Handmade jewellery from Aviv in Israel is lovingly crafted in silver and semi-preciousstones to suit every occasion. There are glassand ceramic vases, chocolates, helium balloons, Teddy Bears, local honey from Gimingham, handmade goodies from Bali, even Kew Gardens.

Something different for the gardener (or non-gardener) with special greetingscards which you plant in the ground fromwhich flowers will grow.

"We're not difficult to find," said Emma."Coming from Cromer, take the left turn atthe crossroads (signed for Southrepps) justbefore you get to Thorpe Market, then turnimmediately left again into the unmarkedHall Road and you will find us on the righthand side a few hundred yards down the road. And there is plenty of parking space."

Emms Stems also has a really useful ReminderService, which help to make sure you don't forget that important person or occasion. Justvisit www.emmsstems.co.uk and fill in the reminder service form or call into the shop and see Emma about filling the form in withyou. Then Emma will send you either a text or email a week before the event to remind youto order your flowers.

Any business needs thepersonal touch whendealing with the big special occasion(full wedding service, corporate) and Emmahas now a comfortableseating area so that customers can taketheir time and talkthrough their

requirements for the big day.

"This seating area is vital for making arrangements for weddings and funerals, we can now relax and take the time needed to understand what is needed to get thearrangements right for the occasion."

Final word from Emma, "After two yearsbuilding up Emms Stems, I would like to thank all my friends and close family that have helped to grow our fledgling business, without them we would not have done so well so quickly."

Much more than Flowers

Cromer and Sheringham Probus ClubOur first meeting of the year took place on 5 February when Nick Walmsley gave us a talk entitled “R101 and the Norfolk connection” after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton. As well as telling us about the construction of the airship, Nick related the story of its disastrous finalflight in 1930. The speaker was astonished to hear that two of our members had seen the R101 flyoverhead on that night in North London and Tonbridge respectively. There were two visitors and oneguest at the meeting and it is pleasing to report that all three have applied to join.

The next meeting will be on 5 March which will feature Dr. Ian Keymer giving an illustrated talk entitled "A vet's adventures in Colonial Africa".

If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followedby a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an establishedresident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.

For our February meeting the Society welcomed back RosemaryWard to speak to us on gardens to visit in Norfolk. The garden at East Ruston is very structuralwith a series of themed gardens but we wereencouraged to look particularly at the manycontainers dotted around the garden. These canoften be overlooked but are a considerablepresence in their own right. The Bishop’s Garden in Norwich is frequently open at weekends and as well as seeing a beautiful garden visitors are also helping to support themany charities which benefit from its opening.

Staying in Norwich, Will Giles’ Exotic Garden

on the Yarmouth Road is unique with its collection of plants and shrubs not usuallyfound in Britain. It is best seen in August andSeptember as many of the tender plants theretake a little while to recover from our Norfolkwinters.

Fairhaven Garden at South Walsham is famousfor its displays of primulas and Chestnut Farmat West Beckham is a must for lovers of snowdrops but should also be visited for itscollection of daphnes. The variety “JacquelinePostle” is in flower at the moment and shouldnot be missed apparently.

Village garden days are a popular feature ofsummer weekends in Norfolk and Rosemary

was particularly impressed with the efforts ofgardeners in Blofield and Wells. It is certainlyworth keeping an eye out for these events asthey can provide an ideal opportunity to seewhat amateur gardeners are capable of and provide us with interesting ideas for our owngardens. Some gardens are only open on one ortwo days a year and we were encouraged totake the opportunity of visiting Voewood atHigh Kelling and Hunworth Old Rectory if wehad a chance.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 14 March at7.30 in the Community Hall, Cromer. PaulineHarper will give a talk “U2 can grow Vegetables”. All are welcome. Cost £2.

When the second world war ended in 1945,Britain’s railways were worn down and wornout. There was a vital need to design and buildhundreds of steam engines as quickly as possible.

Now some of the biggest of the engines thatgot Britain going again will be running at thePoppy Line’s double-weekend Steam Gala,March 8-10 and 16 -17. They’ll be led by theiconic Britannia, first of a class of massive engines that helped restore express servicesthroughout the country. Alongside Britanniawill be wildlife artist David Shepherd’s BlackPrince – an even more powerful engine, builtto haul essential supplies of iron ore to the

steelworks from the docks.

Four other large engines from the early periodof the nationalised British Railways will beshowing their paces, giving an unforgettablesnapshot of the time when the railways (andthe country) were struggling to restore standards after the ravages of war.

Britannia is scheduled to come over Sheringham level crossing on Thursday 7th March. The timing has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to be during the afternoon.

Rover tickets offer unlimited travel all day onall the trains, and there’ll be an intensive steam

service every day. Book before March 1st toqualify for 15% off ticket prices (go online towww.nnrailway.co.uk or call 01263 820 800).Walk-up Rover fares are £21 adult, £20 seniorcitizen, £13 child 5-15. Under 5s are free, andthere’s a special family ticket at £54, covering2 adults and 3 children or 3 adults + 1 child.Tickets give free entry to the William MarriottMuseum at Holt Station.

Cromer WI We opened our February meeting with a talk by Mr.Steven Brooks on Travel. It was not the sort of talk weexpected and we were soon all wiping our eyes with

tears of laughter. Mr. Brooks has been a travel agent for 32 years andowns his own company “Glenfield Travel” He is the longest servingtravel agent in Leicester and puts his success down to his dad. He nowhas over 400 books available in his shop. Did you know that seventeenand a half thousand flight fly out of this country every day and thatcruises are now taking over as the favourite type of holiday? For nearlyan hour he kept us amused and we came away with aching sides. Wethen continued our meeting where we discussed our forthcoming visitsto the theatre in Norwich to see an Agatha Christie play, “Spider’s Weband a trip to the Van Dal shoe factory. We are also taking part in theCrab and Lobster Weekend and one of our members has agreed to decorate our Lifebuoy. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street. Judy Roberts, Secretary

The key thing now is improvements for patients – Norman LambThe East of England Ambulance Trust is to bring in more full-time ambulances to provide extracover for towns and villages including Cromer and Potter Heigham.

Commenting on the news, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I welcome this news, which isa sign that the Trust is taking these issues seriously. I have persistently highlighted the problem ofunacceptably slow response times, taking up concerns from the public and from ambulance staffthemselves. The key thing now is that these steps bring improvements in the service for patients. I pay tribute to local paramedics who have consistently raised important concerns. They deserveour thanks.”
