Colleagues at NNDC joined with neighbours, friends and acquaintances both in Cromer butalso the surrounding area to offer condolencesto the family of Keith and Andrea Johnson.

Christmas SeasideSpecial reviewThe Christmas Show opened at The Pavilion Theatre Cromer on the 1st Decemberwith a spectacular performance of variety entertainment.Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed, has created a highly profes-sional and massively entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg, MusicalDirector and arranger.Olly Day linked the whole show brilliantly in a lighthearted and entertaining way, assisted in no "little" way by Jo Little, comedienne, who's personality and talentshone through. The two lead singers, Lulu Alexander and Cromers own Eddie Bushell gave ustremendous performances with great solo efforts, but also featured in the wholecompany scenes. Lulu also gave us a brief glimpse of her talent as a championshipskater. Helen Gulston and James Morgan who are part of the superb SeasideSpecial Dancers joined Lulu and Eddie to great effect as the Christmas Quartet. The Seaside Special dancers gave their usual talented, enthusiastic and high octane performance supported by the delightful and extremely talentedchildren of Marlene's School of Dancing. Marlene also provided the brilliant members of the Youth Choir who linked well with the professional castmembers. We can certainly be proud of our local performers. The scenery was designed by Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations, costumes by Laura Whyte and sound and lighting by Amanda Hill added greatly to theenjoyment of the show. A very talented bunch. This is a fantastic show which runs until 30th December so book early to get into the Christmas Spirit.WARNING: DO NOT BE LATE TAKING YOUR SEATS AS YOU WILL MISS A VERY SPECIAL OPENING WHICH INCLUDESSOME LOCAL CHARACTERS YOU MAY RECOGNISE.

Council launches EmptyProperty MatchingService to mark EmptyHomes WeekNorth Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a new free serviceto help put people with an empty property to sell in touch with thosewho want to buy them.

The North Norfolk Empty Property Matching Service will provide particulars of empty properties and alongside it a list of people seeking to buy empty properties in the North Norfolk district. Generalparticulars (personal details will be kept confidential) are available onthe NNDC website and the service also has its own dedicated phone line and email contact address.

The launch took place during Empty Homes Week at the end of November. The week is organised by the charity Empty Homes to highlight the waste of empty property nationwide, and to celebrate the success of numerous examples and new initiatives to bring emptyhomes back into use and to encourage more widespread action.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing Trevor Ivory said, “Thiscouncil is determined to bring empty homes back into use. We have 887long-term empty properties on the NNDC Council Tax records and Ihope schemes like the Empty Homes Matching Service will help peopleto bring them back to life. Houses should be lived in, not left empty, andif people aren’t willing to take action themselves, then we are perfectlyprepared to take enforcement action at the appropriate time if we haveto.”

Cromer MusicEveningsReview of concert held on Sunday, 25 November at Templewood, NorthreppsBogdan Vacarescu (violin) and Heidi Parsons (Cello)Cromer Music Evenings maintained the high standard now expected atTemplewood in presenting two world class artists who delighted almosta full house with a well chosen programme.

Contrary to the order, Heidi Parsons opened with J S Bach’s Cello SuiteNo 1 in G Major. The Prelude to begin this set of dances is usual but isnot always the case, as often the Allemande is the first item followed byCourante, Sarabande, Bourees and Gigue the suite of five dances. Beingunaccompanied this can leave the performer exposed to the listener regarding intonation and tone quality - both were absolutely sublime in the hands of this master of the instrument.

The Chaconne from Partita ll for Violin solo by J S Bach, again unaccompanied, captured an intimate rapport with the audience, adding even more to an atmosphere of musical excitement.

Maurice Ravel’s Sonate for Violin and Cello in four movements waswritten in memory of Ravel’s friendship with Debussy. This piece encapsulated almost everything required of accomplished string players. This, amongst the dissonant passages and the beautiful unusual lyricallines from the wailing sounds of the Lento movement to the aggressivedouble stopping where the chords played, with almost a percussive effect, was riveting to witness.

After the interval, Niccolo Paganini’s Duetto ll (Tre Duetti Concertanti)for violin and cello displayed the magnetic rapport between the twoartists and was unblemished, as they accompanied each other’s playingof the melodic line.

The Concert Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer" by H W Ernstfor solo violin consisted of a myriad of improvisatory snippets and wasperformed with ease and yes, humorous ideas, conjured up, I’m sure, asthe performance progressed by none other than Vacarescu himself!Passacaglia (frei nach Handel) by Johan Halvorsen was the final piece in what proved to be the highlight of Cromer Music Evenings currentseries.

The warning comes as ACPOs (Association of Chief Police Officers) National BurglaryAwareness campaign focuses on distractionburglary – crimes where people trick or distract residents in order to gain entry to their property.

The most common form is for people to pretend to be from a water company, gas orelectric provider and trick the homeowner intothinking they need urgent access to his phone. Other methods include pretending to be doingrepairs or maintenance or impersonating figures of authority to enter homes.

Detective Sergeant Pete Jessop, from NorfolkConstabulary’s Operation RADAR team, which specialises in doorstep crime, said whileoffences had fallen significantly in recent yearsit still pays to be vigilant.

“I would urge people to remain vigilant whenthey receive a knock on their door. Cold callersare men or women or make up stories to gainaccess to a person’s home to steal and willoften prey on the vulnerable such as the elderly.

“If you do decide to open the door to someone, ensure that you ask for identification and certainly think twice before inviting anyone

into your house. A genuine caller should not mind youchecking.”

Police would alsogive the following advice:

• Close and lock the back door before answering the front door

• Use a spy hole or window to look at the caller before answering the door.

• Elderly householders should be on their guard and members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should be vigilant.

• Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are.

• Phone the company or organization the caller claims to be from while the caller waits outside.

• Tell someone you trust about uninvited callers to your home.

• If necessary, report it to police with a description of the people involved and details of their vehicles if possible.

Further crime prevention advice isavailable at www.norfolk.police.uk.

Police cold caller warning Police are reminding residents to be vigilant to cold callers in the run-up to Christmas.

Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas ChildSometimes we watch the news, see people in need and think, 'But whatcan I do?' In 1990 a man in North Wales saw a report about orphanagesin Romania.

He decided he would organise a relief collection. In among the toys andtoiletries sent were some shoeboxes, covered in Christmas paper andfilled with treats.

Operation Christmas Child was born! By 1995 the annualevent had grown so much thatan international charity, Samaritan's Purse, was approached to take on whatwas a logistical nightmare.

Last year 1.1 million shoeboxes were sent to twelvecountries and hopefully byChristmas Day this year the100 millionth gift-filled shoe-box will have been delivered.

And yet the need is so great thata child who receives a shoebox this year is unlikely ever to get another. The charity which began with one person continues to be about individuals.

Each person who fills a shoebox is making a difference.

On Sunday 18 November members and friends of St. Andrew`sMethodist Church, Sheringham, brought a total of 121 gaily wrappedshoe boxes which they had filled with toys, toiletries, hats, scarves, gloves, educational items, to the church, ready to be sent to this veryworthwhile charity.

Harry with one of the many boxes piled upand ready to go to Samaritans Purse.

On 17 November we held our Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall,North Walsham and I am happy to report that £1623.32 was raised forthe cats in our care. Despite the rain, the sale was very well attendedand a steady stream of customers passed through the doors.

We always enjoy this event as so many friends and fellow cat loverscome and support us and those who have had cats from us update uswith news of their beloved companions. Cats like Vikki, re-homed by us in 2004, had always lived outside until she came into care but nownever attempts to set a foot outdoors, even when she goes round thecountry with her family in their caravan. Vikki sends us postcards fromthe many places she visits and is a much travelled cat. Also, looking atphotographs of two kittens which left for a new home in the summerwith two of our new volunteers, Rachel and Ant, and seeing how muchthey have grown; or talking to the couple who asked for our help, havingbought a holiday cottage and discovering they had a feral colony livingclose by, which was rapidly increasing in size and using their garden asa toilet. They trapped all the cats, took the adults to be neutered and

brought the kittens to us to be re-homed. Somany stories we couldtell and so many catswe have helped overthe years.

As this is the last edition of The CromerTimed before Christmaswe would like to thankeveryone who has supported us during theyear and wish them aHappy Christmas and aHealthy and ProsperousNew Year.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalshamfor a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a callon the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

We would like to wish all of our clients a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year

Christmas is coming…………..The tinsel is out, the tree is up and fairy lights are a plenty!

In the canine and feline world however, Christmas is not such a fun time. There is sometimes a lot of disruption to everyday life with more people in thehouse, some of them not very well known. The cat’s usual sleeping place on the

spare bed is suddenly unavailable and there is a great big tree in the front room! So, sometimes our pets get upset at Christmas and when you really stop to think,

it’s no surprise why. With so much sudden change, a dog or cat with an already nervousdisposition may well be tipped over the edge and start protesting with strange and somewhatunwelcome behaviours. Cats may start to urinate or ‘scent mark’ in the house, they maybecome more vocal and start picking fights with their housemates – of any species.Dogs tend to get vocal and disruptive; the tree may be used as a lavatory, after all that’swhat trees are for outside – silly humans for bringing them inside! There are things you can do to relive the stress on your pets but most of all you need toconsider them in your plans. Try to keep their routine as close to ‘normal’ as possible.Provide an alternative bed if the spare room is unavailable, maybe a crate with a blanketdraped over. The cat may insist on sleeping on top of the wardrobe for the duration of the festivities, let them, as this is where they feel comfortable with everything that is going on.

Some other tips for Christmas with animalsDon’t buy a pet as a present – so many end up as unwanted gifts and in rescue homes by New Year.Don’t feed your dog chocolate – it is toxic to dogs – they can become extremely unwell and somequantities of dark chocolate can be fatal.Provide a den or use a plug-in calming device (available from the surgery) to ease the nerves ofstressed animals when everyone arrives for Christmas.Keep routines as normal as possibleIf you are worried about your pet’s behaviour during Christmas or at any other time during the yeardo get in touch with the nurses at Sheringham for some sound advice.

The future of motoring has arrived in NorthNorfolk after local car retailer Crayford andAbbs Ltd was appointed to join Nissan’s expanding elite band network of specialist EV (Electric Vehicle) outlets last month.

The exciting appointment means the Bodhamdealership is now able to sell and service thegroundbreaking Nissan LEAF – the world’sbestselling 100% electric car.

It follows a period of intensive manufacturer-ledtraining for dealership staff and the appointmentof James Abbs as a dedicated Electric Vehicle Relationship Manager on hand to assist customerswith all driving and ownership queries.

And Kevin Abbs is predicting no shortage ofinterest in the stunning LEAF – the 2011 Worldand European Car of the Year – from potentialcustomers eager to experience its winningcombination of zero-emissions, ultra low running costs and effortless practicality.

A spacious and generously equipped familyhatchback, the LEAF is capable of travellingup to 109 miles on a single charge which could cost as little as £2.03 on an overnightelectricity tariff. In addition, its zero-emissionbattery-powered motor means it’s completelyexempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge.

Meanwhile, Crayfordand Abbs Ltd willalso become a popular destinationfor existing LEAFdrivers as it has beenfitted with a high-techcharging point – partof an ever expandingnationwide network.

Kevin Abbs said:

“This is absolutely fantastic news for our business and for the region’s motorists. By becoming a Nissan specialist EV dealer wehave effectively made 100% electric motoringan affordable and practical reality for the motorists of North Norfolk”

He added: “The Nissan LEAF is an incrediblevehicle which drives and handles just like aconventionally-powered car. But the benefitsare amazing. The running costs are super lowwhile trips to the filling station and forking outfor things like road tax and congestion chargesinstantly become a thing of the past.

“Plus, of course, LEAF drivers have the added benefit of knowing they are not addingto their carbon footprint and are helping the environment.”

The Nissan LEAF is available now priced from£25,900 (including a £5,000 governmentgrant).

For more information about the NissanLEAF, or to book a test drive, visit Crayfordand Abbs’s Bodham showroom or callJames or Kevin now on 01263588160

He has just come out of Phantom of the Opera,is currently starring in Billy Elliot and will appear with Russell Crowe in January’s bigscreen sensation Les Misérables.

But Killian Donnelly says what he is mostlooking forward to at the moment is Jack andthe Beanstalk at the Sheringham Little Theatre. It was back in June that the Irish performer waspersuaded to write and direct the seasonalshow for the Norfolk town’s venue, when theatre director Debbie Thompson’s 14 year-old daughter Katie contacted him via Twitter.

“I love doing panto – coming up with the stories and writing the sketches,” he admits. “I was so pleased when Katie asked me if Iwould be involved. I was excited to be takingmy work to such an intimate venue and I hadnever been to Norfolk before.”

Katie, a pupil at Sheringham High, had beenfollowing Killian on Twitter since seeing himstar as Raoul in hit musical Phantom of theOpera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket. And, to her surprise, he responded to her suggestion and sent her mother a script for Jack and the Beanstalk.

Originally, says Killian, 28, the plan was that he would direct the entire show but now aco-director, Damien Douglas, has been broughtin to help out. “I was really looking forward todoing the whole thing but was then offered therole of Billy’s older brother Tony, in Billy

Elliot,” he explains. “I realised I would not beable to dedicate as much time as I had hoped tothe panto so this seemed a good solution.”

Killian, who comes from Kilmessan, in CountyMeath, Ireland, joined West End show LesMisérables as “a swing” (a cast member who isalways ready to substitute a number of minorroles) but quickly won more major parts in theproduction. He then moved into Phantom andwon roles in television shows including TheLast Furlong and The Tudors.

“I started in Billy Elliot in November and amfinding Tony a great part to play,” he says. “Heis a very driven character, who, unlike Billy, issimilar to his dad – and doesn’t understandwhy his brother is into ballet.”

But, says Killian, 2012 has also been an exciting year for him as he has been filming for the new Les Misérables movie, whichopens in January, and stars Hugh Jackman,Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sacha BaronCohen and Helena Bonham Carter.

“I play Combeferre, one of the students at theABC Café,” he explains. “I spent two monthsof the summer filming and I loved workingwith Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. Theywere both so down to earth. I had to get into a fight with Russell Crowe’s character, whichwas great fun.”

Killian says he likes to “put his fingers into

a lot of different pies” but stresses panto remains a passion.

“It is such a joy to do something like a pantomime and to be able to take it to childrenin Norfolk at Christmas. There really is something quite magical about it all.”

*Jack and the Beanstalk runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 5 to Saturday, January 5. For more information or for tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

Students of Cromer Academy, led by the EcoTeam, took part in SwitchOff Fortnight from 19- 30 November.During this time, the EcoTeam led a very informative and thought provoking assemblyfor the whole school and patrolled corridors, ensuring that staff and students had remembered to ‘Switch Off’ any electrical items in their classroom and around theschool which were not being used. The results were positive with many classroomsscoring very highly on the EcoTeam’s audit sheet. During the weekly SMSC activity, members of forms were encouraged to make a personal pledge to switch something off at home when they are not using it.

On 28 November, the heating was switched off and students were allowed to wearscarves, coats and hats in lessons to raise awareness of the need to conserve energy. Many students were shocked at how warm the school was! One year 8 student said: “I can’t believe how energy efficient the Academy is. I’m sitting here in my shirt, lovely and warm in the middle of winter, with no heating on. It’s great!”

Cromer Academy Switches on toSwitching Off!

........ and Switches on toSwitching On tooCromer Academy student Natasha Smith, one of the Olympic torchbearers in the summer, and the winners ofthe Christmas poster competition, were on hand to turn on the town’s Christmas lights this year.A rainy day it may have been but not for the evening’s festivities. that did not prevent everyone from havinga good time with the street entertainers and at the many Christmas stalls at the Parish Hall and along ChurchStreet and the High Street. There were carols too from Reverend David Court backed by the Salvation ArmyBrass Band.Chairman of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation Tony Shipp commented, “I’m sure you wouldlike me to say a big thank you to the team who spent so many weeks putting up the Christmas lights. We alsohave the crab-pot tree, so a big thank you to John Davies and our local fishermen who gathered 150 pots tomake it.”And the crab-pot tree? Well, you either like it or you don’t, but for sure it is different and appropriate for thetown. One thing is for sure it’s not the only one - Provincetown, Cape Cod Massachusetts was apparently theinspiration for Cromer’s fishermen. A fun year for Natasha Smith

Bootiful!By Miranda MarshallPartner at Hayes + StorrIf a decade or so ago, you’d asked your average visitor to Norfolk to name a famousNorfolk person, the chances are they wouldhave chosen either Horatio Nelson or BernardMatthews.

Bernard has recently posthumously regainedmedia attention, by leaving his English andFrench estates in such a way that led to somebig legal battles between his adopted childrenand his mistress. Limited space requires me tosimplify the facts.

The dispute arose over Bernard leaving hisFrench villa (with a value of Euro 15,000,000)to Odile, his mistress of 20 years. French succession law imposes ‘forced heirship’, (i.e. you are restricted as to whom you canleave your assets). The French rules requiredBernard to give 75% of his French assets to hischildren and he was only free to leave Odile

25%. Three of his four children insisted on exercising their rights, and on that basis, Odilecould only have a 44% share of the villa. Thosechildren (who had received substantial assetsfrom their father during his lifetime) alsobrought a claim that the English estate shoulddischarge their liability for French inheritancetax on the villa. It is worth mentioning as partof the wider picture that the son who agreedthat Odile could take his share of the Frenchvilla had received his father’s residuary estateworth £40,000,000.

There was abundant evidence that Bernardknew that he was required under Frenchforced- heirship rules to benefit his children by his French estate; but, there was also goodevidence that he did not intend that his Englishestate should bear the tax on his French estate. The French succession rules were applied to the villa and the children received their enforced share; however, under English law the children had to pay the tax on their Frenchinheritance from their own resources as theywere unsuccessful in disputing the EnglishWill. It was quite clear that Bernard had neverwanted his children to benefit further from his

English assets.

Felbrigg HallThis December (Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December 11am-2.30pm last entry 2pm) Felbrigg Hall’s popular Christmas event is taking a nostalgic trip back to the early 1940s. With the help of the Civil Defendersre-enactment group and Felbrigg’s volunteers, the Hall will be brought to life tocelebrate a wartime Christmas. Members of the Home Guard will be carryingout exercises in the grounds and vintage vehicles will be on display.

The Felbrigg Hall volunteer choir will be performing popular numbers from theperiod along with traditional Christmas carols. The ground floor rooms of the Hall will be decorated for a Christmas in 1940s wartime style. As you walkaround the house, marvel at the determination to celebrate Christmas, despitethe hardships of life on the Home Front.

Cuts to the ambulance fleet in north Norfolk should be overturned afterthe ambulance service failed to reach vital targets for another month,North Norfolk Labour Party has argued.

The local Labour party, which created the Act on Ambulances petitionwith over 8000 signatures, was assured by the East of England Ambulance that if demand continued to increase and response timeswere not addressed in the rota shake-up they would request more funding to ensure all cuts are overturned in north Norfolk.

However, it was revealed in November that the ambulance service innorth Norfolk had failed to reach the A8 target to reach at least 75pc ofmost serious calls within 8 minutes, and fewer than a quarter of Norfolkstroke victims had reached hospital within the 60 minute guidelines.

“These figures confirm what we have been hearing on the ground from

patients who have suffered from long waits for an ambulance," saidDenise Burke of North Norfolk Labour Party. “They highlight the pressure the ambulance service is under with the £50m of governmentcuts they have to make. The data also shows that even before these cutswere made the ambulance service did not have enough resource to copewith an aging population and increasing demand in north Norfolk.”

The local Labour Party has also been campaigning for MP and HealthMinister Norman Lamb to drop his support for cutting ambulance funding. They recently handed in a petition signed by hundreds of constituents urging him to rethink.

The day’s work starts at 8am on New Year’sDay when Clive Casburn’s team from PremiereFireworks pull up at the Pier forecourt to unload two vans worth of fireworks anddoesn’t end until counting the collection is complete, often not until 8pm.

Clive said “we are looking forward to building, what has become for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier,as well as presenting problems has proved a marvellous setting, to enhance our material.

By rigging the whole length of the pier theshow can be seen all along the shoreline. Also, by suspending material from the pier, itadds another dimension to the display. The useof aquatic fireworks, surprises the audienceevery year. The reflections of the fireworksboth in the sea and wet sand create a really unbelievable atmosphere”.

“We take great pride in firing this show, whichhelps in bringing a real celebration to the townand North Norfolk, to welcome in the NewYear.”

Fortified only by mince pies and mulled wine, the band of collectors have to separate, bag upand count the takings in their buckets. As oneregular says, “anyone who’s ever had to countcoins will know it’s a dirty job but someone’sgot to do it.”

I’m sure we readers will agree with us thateverybody involved in the New Year’s DayFirework Display does a really good job andjoin with us in offering our thanks.

Pupil worries about speeding outside schoolNorman Lamb MP has written to Norfolk County Council about speeding in Gresham village following an email from a young constituent.

Eleanor Bailey, a Year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class at Gresham villageschool, emailed the MP because of her worries about speeding cars outside the school. She wants to see a 20mph limit both outside theschool and in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer.

Every day in the UK, 19 adults and seven children are knocked downand killed or seriously hurt when on foot or bike. Road safety charityBrake is campaigning for local authorities to make 20mph speed limitsthe norm across built-up areas and for drivers to slow down near schoolsand shops. In a national hands-up survey conducted in schools, Brakefound that 74% of pupils in East Anglia thought that drivers should goslower around their school or home.

In her email Eleanor said “I am a year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class (yrs 4, 5, 6) in Gresham village school. I am taking some of my sparetime at home to write to you about the speed limits outside the school. It should be 20mph and regular speed checks around there. As well there should be 20mph around the corner in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer!”

Commenting, her father Arthur said “It is no good saying sorry afterwards; a slight delay will not cause you any problems, but it can save a child’s life.”

Norman Lamb MP said “I commend Eleanor for raising the question ofsafety around her school. I strongly support the case for 20mph limits,as a matter of course, outside schools. This seems to me to be a verysensible standard principle. Walking and cycling are excellent ways tostay healthy and active so it is a shame that fears about road safety putpeople off.”

The Norfolk Pigeon Loft ran a great fun festive competition,to decorate and accessories a paper template of a Gingerbread person. Entrants then had to name their gingerbread person and write its story, reports Carla Marfleet.

Donna from the Norfolk Pigeon Loft asked Eddie Bushell, Lead malevocalist of the Christmas Seaside Special at Cromer pier, to judge theentries and chose a first, second and third place. Eddie was amazed at all the wonderful 35 gingerbread people on show, which were lookingbeautifully festive set out in front of the huge Christmas tree in the pavilion theatre bar on the pier.

Donna said, "I cannot believe the enthusiasm and creativity of the entrants. There was such a variety of ideas, some inspired by the festiveseason, like Santas, snowmen and wintery looks. Some decorated with

buttons, beads, ribbonsand feathers. there wasa gingerbread chef, complete with recipebook, and gingerbreadqueen, even a gingerbread mermaid!"

After some hard deliberation, Eddiemanaged to completethe very difficult task ofpicking the winners. inthird place was Phoebe Muirhead, aged 9 from Cromer with her beautiful gingerbread lady, called GingerBelle the Christmas Fairy.

Second place went to Hazel, aged 17 from Mundesley, hers was calledGingerbread Lake, and was inspired by the ballet Swan Lake. The gingerbread ballerina was in a white dress on one side as the WhiteSwan from the story, turn it over and the other side was in a black dress as the Black Swan.

The winner went to Nicole Copeman-Brown, aged 6 from Holt. Her gingerbread man was called Mr Ginger Snowman and was a fluffy cotton wool snowman complete with a mini hand knitted scarf! Nicole had written a story about her ginger snowman, telling of how a gingerbread boy made him in the snow and he was brought to life by magic and helped Santa and his elves with delivering the Christmaspresents and then the all had cocoa!

These clever and creative winners received goody bags ranging from£10 to £20 from the Norfolk Pigeon Loft, which is a great place for thatperfect fashion accessory Christmas gift.

You can catch Eddie singing in the Christmas Seaside Special at theCromer pier throughout out December, and from the 15th, kids ticketsare free with full paying adults.

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club havehad a busy but enjoyable time over the pastfew months. Apart from the usual businessmeetings on the second Tuesday of each monththey have had an enjoyable social side. One evening in September some of the members had a guided tour of the historicalparts of Great Yarmouth and heard many interesting facts as well as gruesome tales of the past. The tour was followed by a hotsupper. Also in September they visited the home andworkshops of Wing Commander Ken Walliswho invented the Autogyro and flew “LittleNellie” in the James Bond film “You OnlyLive Twice”. In October they organised a very successful

“Quiz & Chips” at The Morley Club and areplanning to hold another in the New Year. On 27 November the Lions held a CharityDarts Competition in aid of Nelson’s Journey(a charity for bereaved children) and otherLions charities. On Remembrance Sunday the Lions laid poppy wreaths at the war memorials inCromer, Sheringham and Holt. At present the members are preparing Christmas Hampers for needy families. Mostof the items for the hampers have been kindlydonated by local shops and supermarkets. The Lions will have a Christmas tree at theChristmas Tree Festival which is being held atSt.Andrew’s Church, Sheringham 13th - 18thDecember and will also be carrying out a street

collection in Sheringham laterin December. Again all theproceeds from these two eventsare in aid of Nelson’s Journeyand other Lions charities. Please feel free to come and say hello. If you would like to know more about theLions or would be interested in coming alongto a meeting (meetings held on second andfourth Tuesday of every month at The MorleyClub, Sheringham) please contact Hazel or Brian on 01263 821276 or email [email protected]

The members of Sheringham & Cromer LionsClub would like to wish everyone a veryHappy Christmas and all the very best for2013.

The Co-operative Travel store in Cromer is once again seeking donations of Christmas gifts to fill its 'Santa's Suitcase' in aid of northNorfolk-based charity, Break, following an overwhelming response lastyear.

For the eighth year running, staff at the High Street store are collectingsuitable, unwrapped gifts from customers to create a bulging suitcasefull of presents for the charity. It will then hand over the festive haul toBreak on Friday 21st December. Those wishing to donate are asked tojust pop into the store with their gifts over the next week.

The appeal follows an overwhelming response from customers and localresidents last year, with the branch taking in enough donations to fill six

suitcases. One generous couple spent £100 at Argos on toys for thecause, and many customers collected attractively packaged toiletries.Sam Antoniades-Cork, Manager at the Cromer branch comments “We were truly stunned by the response to Santa’s Suitcase last year, and Break were over the moon with the kindness and generosity of ourcustomers and local residents. We are very pleased to be supportingBreak for the fourth year running; any donations will be gratefully received and will go to a very good home.”

Now in its ninth year, ‘Santa’s Suitcase’ is a network-wide initiative ofthe Co-operative Travel, which the majority of its 300 stores across thecountry undertake each Christmas in aid of a local charity of theirchoice.

People working full time on the minimumwage will have seen their income tax bill cut in half. Raising the personal allowance was a flagship Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment.

In Norfolk, 34,040 people have been lifted outof tax altogether since 2010. 312,300 people inthe county will get a tax cut from April nextyear.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb welcomedthe Chancellor’s Autumn Statement which alsoincluded measures to tackle tax avoidance andevasion, extra spending for transport, skills andschools, and cancelling January’s planned increase in fuel duty.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP NormanLamb said: “My priority, and the priority of the Liberal Democrats, is to ensure that thewealthiest pay their fair share and to help theordinary families who need it most. The measures announced today reflect that

commitment: cutting income tax for those on low and middle incomes, cancelling theplanned fuel duty rise and increasing the basic state pension by 2.5% in line with thecommitment to the triple lock, a Lib Dem manifesto commitment. At the same time, theCoalition Government is clamping down ontax evasion and introducing the first ever General Anti-Abuse Rule – something Labournever did in their thirteen years in power. It isclear that we still have a long way to go to fixour damaged economy, but we are on the righttrack.”

The Chancellor also announced reforms to the last government’s controversial Private Finance Initiative, which locked some schools, hospitals and Government buildings into poor value contracts, at great expense to thetaxpayer.

The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitalwas one of the first NHS hospitals to be builtunder the PFI scheme. The contract was

renegotiated just three years after it was firstsigned and costs local taxpayers £37.7m foreach of the 35 years of the contract.

The new Private Finance 2 (PF2) model will help secure better value by allowing thetaxpayer to take a share in projects. The newsystem will also be more transparent, requiringprojects to publish financial performance figures every year. Existing PFI deals havebeen renegotiated and £2.5bn of savings made.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said:

“The announcement on PFI is really significant. The last Labour government were utterly careless with taxpayers’ money, spending vast sums on these poor value contracts.

“PF2 will ensure that the taxpayer shares in the profits from these projects. In the past, theproceeds simply lined the pockets of privatecontractors.”

Changes to the personal tax allowance announced in today’s AutumnStatement will mean that by April, income tax bills will have been cut by £600 a year.

is a Walsingham based charity and we have been working with abandoned and vulnerable children and young people in Romania

since 1991, after the fall of the Caucescu Regime. Over the past 21 years together with the local population and government, FARA has been assisting hundreds of children and young people, many of them with mental and physical disabilities, forgotten and locked away in horrible state

institutions, often living a life of daily abuse. We’ve grown into an organisation of excellence, developing innovative programmes to ensure that these marginalised children and young people are able to live a dignifying life and accepted in their own community. In our two family-style homes we give abandoned children a warm nest and a future to look forward to. We recover young people with intellectual disabilities from state institutions in three residential centres and integrate them into society where they are able to look after themselves and go to work. In

three community based day centres our UK trained staff assist children with mental and physical disabilities and their families with special education and therapy to enable them to be included in their local community. And we feed 140 primary school children who live in extreme poverty on a daily basis which prevents them from dropping out of school and prepares them for a better life out of poverty.Unfortunately, FARA is still very dependent on funds raised in the UK. Our 50 shops in London and Norfolk (Holt) raise the majority of our funds. Romania is the second poorest country in Europe and the economic crisis has hit the country very badly. In the future we want the Romanian government will take more and more responsibility for its vulnerable children and young people and we are hopeful that this will be possible once the economic climate has improved. But until that time has arrived we need your support. Please help us to help our children and young people, they still need us. You can help us in many different ways; you can visit our FARA Charity Kids Shop in Holt (9 Fish Hill,

children or donate to our Christmas Appeal onwww.justgiving.com/FARA-ChristmasAppeal2012 . Your money is wisely spent; only 8% of our budget goes to overhead which means thatfrom every pound we receive, 92 pence goes directly to Romania.
