Our 2012 Bursary event will be anopportunity to either learn bead crochet(beginners) or learn how to do a project
based on the Turkish-style beaded snakes(intermediate to advanced crocheters).
Adele plans to teach two projects tobeginners (or anyone who would like todo them) the chain stitch necklace andthe tubular bead crochet pendant. Moreexperienced bead crocheters may choose toconcentrate on the snake project.
Project 1: Chain Stitch Necklace
Start from the very beginning of beadcrochet and learn to crochet beads witha chain stitch to make a sparkly necklace
which combines size 6/0 seed beads,
crystals, shaped beads, and nylon cord.Students will learn how to string beadsin a pattern, the basic slip knot andchain stitch, crochet with beads, finisha necklace with bead caps, and attach aclasp with basic wire working techniques.Make one long necklace, a three-strandnecklace that can be braided or twisted
with ribbon, or a multi-strand bracelet. Nocrochet experience needed.
Chain Stitch Necklace Materials & Tools: 14 yards nylon Chinese cord (0.8mm) or
thread to fit through 6/0 seed beads 6/0 seed beads 6 g colour A, 6g colour
B, 9g colour C) assorted shaped beads and crystals such
as Miyuki 5mm cubes, imitation pearls,Toho 4mm Magatama drops, 6x4mmroundel crystals, 6mm round crystals.
2 15x10mm bead caps 1 clasp approximately 20x10mm or larger 20 mm 20 or 22 gauge craft wire in a
colour to match bead cones and clasp 2 jump rings suitable for clasp 1m ribbon to coordinate with your beads
and cord (optional) small amount fabric glue like Sobo or
Aleenes Tacky Glue big-eyed needle
size 6 (1.80mm) steel crochet hook scissors round-nose pliers chain-nose pliers wire cutters nylon jaw pliers bead mat task lamp (optional)
Project 2: Tubular Bead CrochetPendant
Learn bead crochet with the slip stitchmethod, the one most commonly usedto make the popular bead crochet ropes.Students will make a 3.5 tube of size 8/0
beads which can be strung as a straighttube or turned into a teardrop-shapedpendant and walk out of class wearingtheir new creation. You will learn how tostring beads in a pattern, bead crochet in
the round, add a new thread, finish a piecewith bead caps, and how to combine thebead crochet tube with wire and crystalsto create a fun focal piece. Students mustknow how to make a slip knot and chainstitch before class.
Tubular Pendant Materials & Tools: 1 spool size 20 cotton crochet thread,
C-Lon fine weight nylon cord, Tuff-cord #3 nylon cord, or size F nylon
thread. Size 8/0 seed beads 2g colour A, 2g
colour B, 1g colour C. Hex or triangle beads may be used for the
stripe. 2 10 or 11mm bead caps (for pendants
without bead crochet top) ribbon or chain to hang pendant from For pendant with bead crochet top: head
pin, wire top, bead For pendant with crystal: 30mm 22 gauge
craft wire, 10mm roundel crystal For pendant with leaf: 30 mm 20 gauge
craft wire, metal charm, 5 or 6 mmroundel crystal
size 6 (1.80mm) steel crochet hookround-nose pliers chain nose pliers nylon jaws pliers wire cutters task lamp (optional)
Project 3: Bead Crocheted SnakeProject
Take bead crochet to the next level bymaking your own modern, smaller versionof a Turkish prisoner-of-war snake in size8/0 beads. Based on the souvenir snakesmade by Turkish prisoners of war in World
War I, this class will teach the bead crochetmethod used by the Turkish POWs, how toincrease and decrease beads, how to chartletters, how to crochet on both sides of afoundation chain, and how to make a brickstitch tongue. Previous experience withtubular bead crochet is necessary.
Snake Materials & Tools: 13g 8/0 seed beads colour A for main
body 6g 8/0 seed beads colour B for outside of
zigzag 7g of 8/0 seed beads for middle of zigzag 2g of 8/0 seed beads for accent beads 11g of 8/0 seed beads for belly size 30 crochet thread fiberfill or 5 cotton wool balls small amount of Nymo (or similar) thread
to match beads for brick stitch tongue sewing thread, any colour size 10 (1.15mm or 1.30 mm) or 9
(1.40mm) steel crochet hook #10 beading needles or big-eyed needles scissors bead mat task lamp (optional)
Some materials will be for sale on theday, and some tools such as pliers will beprovided for use on the day.Everyone welcome if you would like to
