Workshopreihe „Mobile Propaganda and Disinformation Lab“ des
Hobbs (University of Rhode Island) werden Beispiele zeitgenössischer Propaganda
unter Einbezug der interaktionsorientierten Onlineplattform „MindOverMedia“
in international vergleichender Perspektive diskutiert.

Workshop series “Mobile Propaganda and Disinformation Lab“ carried out
from the Chair of School Pedagogy, University of Wuerzburg
“Fake News“, “Clickbait“ or simply “Propaganda“? – The omnipresence of
these phenomena in everyday life of youths has come along with the intense
use of digital and social media. More and more educators and teachers ask
themselves, how to put such a complex topic into their teaching practice while
fostering media literacy skills at the same time?
Participants will work with teaching material for secondary education pointing
out different ways of fostering critical media literacy skills by means of analyzing
and discussing contemporary propaganda. Together with the internationally
recognized US-expert in media literacy education, Prof. Renee Hobbs (Ph.D.) from
the University of Rhode Island, we will critically deal with international examples
contemporary propaganda using the interactive online platform “MindOver
Media”. Moreover, there will be sufficient opportunities to get hands-on
experience with further digital tools considered to be relevant and helpful for
teaching propaganda and disinformation.
Workshop language is English.

Social media platforms are still highly relevant for the daily life of
adolescents. However, they use Instagram and co. not only for
entertainment and communication purposes but also to inform
themselves about various topics.
Extremists are well aware of this popularity and present themselves rather
inconspicuously on the social web by emphasizing e.g. lifestyle topics.
At the same time, they subliminally present extremist symbols or make use
of hidden political slogans. By linking their profiles to popular hashtags,
youths will be forwarded to pages of political and religious extremists which
can hardly be identified at first glance.
Identifying pieces of deliberately spread dis- and misinformation (fake
news), which can be economically or politically motivated and often go viral
via social networks, cause serious problems for many youths. Even though
consequences of fake news can rapidly become apparent and its content
can be refuted with in-depth research, its underlying algorithmic processes
remain hidden so that they can hardly be perceived.
