A CRITICAL ANALYSIS BASED ON THE GIVEN ARTICLE.

Based on the given article, a sentence “The importance of a mother in raising a successful child”

would fit perfectly as the main implied idea of the article. It is noted that the author, Bonnie

Fellhoelter comes out with the issue of whether the role of the stay at home mother should be

restored in order to raise the children with better morals. She argues stay at home mother is better

than working one in order to raise productive children and the children should not be left to the day

care as this situation will lead to forfeiture of new generation’s morals and values. The author’s

purpose is clearly noticed as she appears to persuade the intended audience which is specifically

parents.

She starts her case by claiming the mother has been viewed as the one who stays at home and raises

the children. However, the role of a mother is subsequently redefined by society as the one who is

important in the workforce. Later on, she demonstrates her attitude to be concerned and serious by

stating that the absence of mother in home will lead to decline of family unit and thus, society.. With

respect to that matter, the author is in favour of the idea of the stay at home mother by presenting

her view on the matter by pointing out the claim made by Sibyl Niemann as well as a survey made by

Public Agenda.

She bases on her argument based on the assumption that mother’s individual care is capable of

developing children with good morals as the maternal care can restrain the violent in day care

centers. The author also strengthens her argument by presenting a strong support which based on

research made by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) which

reports that kids in non-maternal care tend to be associated with bad qualities. The support given is

directly relevant to the argument as it relates directly to clarify the author’s argument. Moreover, it

is objective as it comes from external source.

In delivering the argument in her case, the author has showed a neutral manner by making a

subsequent point which states that note all children in daycare grow up to be aggressive and

unproductive adults. In addition, the author also makes a second argument, claiming many women in

work force do a fine job of balancing their jobs with raising successful children. These points balance

up the argument that has been made earlier by the author. She treats the case fairly without

demonstrating any form of bias attitude.

The latter claim may be correct, but it is lack of validity as there is no external support, for example

any kind of research finding offered to back the claim. Therefore, the claim appears to be the

author’s opinion. For example, the phrase in paragraph 7, “Even though many women in the work

find rising children to be very difficult task, they do a fine job of balancing their jobs with rising

children” is an example of argument she conveyed without any strong support associated.

By and large, the author appears to be inductive in her reasoning, as she provides all the specific

support to why stays at home mother is better in raising successful children and she attempts to

generalize. For instance, she claims that to return society with good morals and values, the

importance of the role of stay at home mother should be restored. Paragraph 2 presents an example

of inductive reasoning.

In summary, the author’s first and second argument appears to contradict each other, thus,

weakening the author’s stand that stay at home mother is better to raise successful children.

However, she managed to show some validity and credibility in her earlier claims, and her overall

arguments neither show any bias nor prejudice. She tends to be neutral in her overall case.
