The pandemic had two huge and con-tradictory numbers colliding on Friday morning, April 10.

A new survey of about 300 Memphis nonprofits shows that their revenues are down $32 million so far this year compared to the first three months of 2019.

And for 2.5 miles, a motionless line of cars — most driven by out-of-work La-tinos — waited for hours in front of the ranch homes of Hickory Hill for a chance to receive enough free groceries to feed a family for a week.

As the need for charitable services grows because of the COVID-19 pandem-ic, contributions for those nonprofits are shrinking, also because of the virus.

The effects on Memphis nonprofits may last a long time, Larry Lloyd said.“I think things will change greatly,” said the Memphis Leadership Foundation chief executive. “There will be some nonprofits that won’t survive. There will be some that will merge, and that’s a good idea for some.

“And those that survive will be doing business very differently,” said Lloyd, whose Memphis Leadership Foundation incu-bates and provides back-office support for such nonprofits as Las Americas.

Las Americas organized Friday’s distri-bution of food which the Mid-South Food Bank dropped off in the parking lot of Mid-South Christian College, 3097 Knight Rd.

The first car in line had arrived at 3:30 a.m.By 10:45 a.m., when Las Americas vol-unteers started placing meats, vegetables, fruits, bread and other foods into the trunk

of that older model Honda CR-V, the line of vehicles stretched 2.5 miles: From Knight to Cottonwood to Goodlett to Knight Arnold.

“Nobody is going to come and wait four or five hours for food unless they really need it,” Las Americas executive di-rector Greg Diaz said while overseeing 80 volunteers.

With board and back-office support from Memphis Leadership Foundation, Diaz and his wife Daisy founded Las Ameri-cas about 15 years ago to help Latino youth in the Hickory Hill and Heights neighbor-hoods with mentoring, tutoring and char-acter-building. More than 500 children ages 6 to 18 are enrolled.

Food distribution to the poor has not been among Las Americas’ usual services, but COVID-19 has created unusual needs.

The effects on the Latino community are “terrible,” said Diaz, who also is senior pastor of Nueva Direccion Church. “People are losing their jobs. Many of them work in factories that are shutting down. Many in the restaurant business,” Diaz said be-tween the bullhorn-amplified instructions he gave to the volunteers.“You can go into a restaurant here in the Mid-South and if you peek into the kitchen, it’s a majority of Latinos who are its cooks, dishwashers, whatnot. They are out of work. The con-struction business is slowing down quite a bit,” Diaz said.

“And yet many of them do not qualify for any of the government help,” he said. “None of them is expecting a check to come in the mail.”Las Americas had orga-nized the previous Friday, April 3, to hand out a week of food for up to 500 families,

but another 750 families had to be turned away. So on this Friday, the nonprofit and Mid-South Food Bank prepared for 1,000 families.

“We are amazed at the need that there is among our community,” Diaz said. “We will serve 1,000 today and probably could serve 3,000 if we could. We do what we can do and will measure the need and hopefully be able to do more next week.”

The Memphis Leadership Foundation was not on site Friday helping to hand out pork, chicken, turkey, vegetables, fruits, breads and other foods. But the umbrella organization continued providing a strong,

invisible hand of support to Las Americas and 33 other Memphis-area nonprofits.

Diaz — not Memphis Leadership Foun-dation — founded Las Americas years ago. But the foundation’s board still oversees Las Americas and has incubated the non-profit by providing accounting, human resources, leadership training and other back-office functions.

“They truly have been a blessing,” Diaz said of Memphis Leadership Foundation. “They have been a great support from day one.”

“Our goal is to help people with a great mission,” Barry Maynard said of the foun-dation. He’s a commercial real estate bro-ker who is this year’s board president for Memphis Leadership Foundation.

“A lot of times they have got an idea and the will to do it, but know nothing about financing. We help nonprofits,” Maynard said.

But through the first three months of this year, Memphis Leadership Foundation revenues are down $300,000 compared to the same period last year, said Lloyd, who leads the umbrella nonprofit that operates with an $8.5 million yearly budget and 86 employees.

Memphis Leadership Foundation is known in the nonprofit world as an “inter-mediary,” or an organization that supports the front-line nonprofits. Among the many nonprofits that Memphis Leadership Foun-

dation incubated were Christ Community Health Services and Memphis Athletic Ministries.

Memphis Leadership Foundation has applied for $866,000 in federal relief from the pandemic’s effects through the Pay-check Protection Program, Lloyd said. The money will keep its employees on the payroll for eight weeks plus provide funds for employee benefits, leases, utilities and other expenses.

Lloyd credited another nonprofit inter-mediary, Momentum Nonprofit Partners,

What if the coronavirus could be stopped in its tracks before being breathed, before being touched, before killing a neighbor, a co-worker, or a be-loved friend or parent?

It’s not a fantasy. A Memphis company is working as fast as it can to fill orders for devices that will kill all known airborne pathogens, including COVID-19.

What’s the fatal ingredient? Light, specifically ultraviolet light generated at the UVC spec-trum (280 to 320 nanometers). It makes pathogens sterile. They cannot reproduce. They can-not sicken. They cannot kill. They cannot terrorize a city or a country.

“Half a second exposure, it’s neutralized. It cannot replicate or colonize or harm,” said David Skelton, owner of EvergreenUV Environmental Disinfection at 1931 Thomas, which uses the Lumalier brand of fixtures.

There’s one hiccup. Finding the supplies for the UVC germi-cidal air disinfection units is dif-ficult right now due to demand and supply chain disruptions. Lamps, or bulbs, are the criti-cal component and the hardest part to find.

Skelton is anxious to get

the bulbs because orders for the UVC devices have skyrock-eted. Everyone wants to kill the coronavirus.

“Last year we sold 30,” Skel-ton said. “Right now, as we speak, I have 1,100 on order. And they all want them now. I’m not even able to go to lunch. The phones don’t stop. Everyone is in crisis mode, and we have the solution.”

A portable version of the de-vice looks a little like a bug light. A circular cage surrounds the UVC bulbs, which emit a bluish light. The cage and bulbs sit on a base with a touch screen control panel. A unit made for perma-nent installation in ambulances and other vehicles is rectangular.

EvergreenUV also sells units for installation with air condi-tioning systems and other UV products.

The cost of a UVC unit starts at about $1,800 and rises to about $4,000. EvergreenUV typi-cally sells the units through its distributors and direct mail to customers.

Because UVC light may burn the eyes, a unit can only be used in an empty room or empty ve-hicle. However, an air-condition-ing system unit can purify air in an occupied space.

The technology, which can be suited for institutions, busi-nesses and residences, isn’t an unknown.

According to the Interna-tional Ultraviolet Association, which added a COVID-19 page to its website, ultraviolet light is a “known disinfectant for air, water and surfaces” and can help mitigate the risk of a coronavirus contact infection “when applied correctly.”

Despite the history of germi-cidal light, installation of UVC units has been a lower priority for many decision-makers. That is, until the coronavirus began circling the globe. The 50 UVC bulbs that EvergreenUV keeps in stock were swiftly depleted.

“We’re having to go all over the world,” said Skelton, who spends his days searching for the special lamps. “I’m buying bulbs out of Italy, Hungry, Poland and Japan. I’m buying whatever I can buy.”

He’s got 6,000 bulbs on order from his usual supplier, a Phillips manufacturing plant in Poland, but there hasn’t been a shipment in 60 days.

“I could throw bodies at it,” said Skelton, who has increased his typical work crew of 14 by a full-time employee and four on-call part-timers. “We could hire

even more if we had the parts available. We just picked up a vendor on Presidents Island. Our problem is not people but find-ing the supplies.”

The government is his big-gest customer. Typically, Ever-greenUV installs them in places like executive and legislative buildings and in prisons, but this week a branch of the military called. That’s all hush-hush right now. No orders yet.

He also puts UVC devices in hospitals. The Veterans Admin-istration health care system re-cently placed an order for 650 of the germ-killing light machines.

Another company wants them for ambulances.

“In back of an ambulance or in a bus at five feet away, takes about 18 seconds to kill,” Skelton said. “Take it in a bigger room, the longer it takes. If the area is shadowed 50%, it takes twice as long.”

EvergreenUV products were placed in all University of Mem-phis administration buildings and classrooms (not the dorms) about 10 years ago, Skelton said. Methodist Germantown-Hospi-tal also has been a client.

A FedEx Supply Chain facility in Olive Branch is handling U.S. distribution of ventilators from medical device maker Medtronic’s ramped-up production lines in Galway, Ireland.

Medtronic, which develops and makes spinal surgery products in Memphis, has been in the news because of an open source initiative to support ventila-tor production by other manufacturers globally.

While the Memphis spinal unit isn’t involved in ventilator production, Medtronic’s Memphis area distribution facilities have been busy moving critical equipment, including ventilators, to hos-pitals around the U.S.

With demand for ventilators rising because of COVID-19, Medtronic is on track to boost the Galway facility’s output at least five-fold. It’s pushing to produce more than 1,000 ventilators a week by the end of June.

Two ventilator models, the Puritan Bennett (PB) 980 and PB560, are produced

at Galway and distributed through the Ol-ive Branch third-party logistics center op-erated by FedEx Supply Chain.

“The FedEx Supply Chain facility in Olive Branch, MS., receives and distrib-utes a number of our products, including ventilators which are manufactured in Galway, Ireland and then shipped to the Olive Branch 3PL facility,” a Medtronic statement read.

“Medtronic employees receive the ventilators and then distribute them to hospitals with the greatest medical need across the U.S.”During the week of March 30, Medtronic made design specifications for the PB560 available under an open source initiative to other companies that want to produce ventilators.

Medtronic said April 8 it had received more than 90,000 registrations for the specifications, and it reported “mean-ing ful progress” with Baylis Medical Company Inc. in Ontario, Canada, the global manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group and Vingroup Joint Stock Com-pany in Hanoi.

The PB560 ventilator is a compact,

lightweight, portable unit that can be used in clinical settings or homes and sells for less than $10,000 on average.

Medtronic recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration emergency authorization to offer the PB560 in the U.S.Medtronic also is in a limited U.S. market release of technology, developed in collaboration with Intel, that enables clinicians to remotely adjust ventilator settings on the PB980, avoiding exposure to COVID-19 patients. The limited release was in two U.S. hospitals.

Medtronic’s push on ventilator sup-plies and technology came as company of-ficials distanced Medtronic from a failed attempt to develop a mid-priced venti-lator starting a decade ago.Medtronic’s Minimally Invasive Therapies unit, which makes ventilators in Galway, resulted from the 2015 acquisition of Covidien. In 2013, Covidien acquired Newport Medi-cal, toward the end of Newport’s three-year agreement with the U.S. government to develop a full-featured ventilator that could be made at a unit cost of $3,000.

N e w p o r t / C o v i d i e n a n d t h e

government ended their contract in No-vember 2013 without meeting the ob-jective. The New York Times mentioned Medtronic in a March 29 article, “The U.S. Tried to Build a New Fleet of Ventilators. The Mission Failed.”

A Medtronic statement about the arti-cle said, “Medtronic, who had no relation-ship with Newport Medical and who did not purchase Covidien until 2015 – nearly three years after the contract dissolved – had no prior knowledge of or involvement in this contract in any manner.”

Sky-high demand for ventilators is an example of how the coronavirus pan-demic is cutting both ways for the medical device industry.

A suspension of elective surgeries has tamped down demand for some of the products made by the Memphis area’s 18,000 or so employees of medical device makers and suppliers.

The result has been a downgrade of the industry’s profit forecasts for an in-definite time. However, longer-term pros-pects are still bright, as analysts foresee

And though Skelton has pitched the UVC product in Memphis for years, the bulk of his company’s business comes from places like California and Kentucky.

Skelton got into the business of sell-ing UVC devices in 2004 after a personal brush with its effectiveness. After his father died, he moved his mother from Florida to Memphis. She had a chronic lung disease, COPD. He had a UVC unit installed to improve the air quality.

“My mom went from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane,” Skelton said.

Anytime an epidemic arises, such as SARS, EvergreenUV’s sales spike, but this pandemic – Skelton’s never seen anything like this.Steve Chandler, owner of At Last Pest Control in Memphis, typically gets calls about bugs people can see, but now he’s selling UVC units to kill bugs people cannot see.“I sold 20 units yesterday. That’s huge,” said Chandler, who tells cus-tomers the wait is four to five weeks. “The heightened interest is ridiculous. The weird part about this is it almost sounds like snake oil, but this stuff works. I’ve had one in my house for 15 years.”

Neil Zeid works for a St. Louis area company, EA Medical LLC, which plugs EvergreenUV ’s products to the EMS and first-responder markets. His cli-ents include ambulance users and manufacturers.“UVC light gets all the hard-to-reach spots. It only takes minutes to use,” Zeid said. “It’s an ideal product. Right now, people are ordering them as fast as they can.

“The business is a record-selling busi-ness,” he said, “but what about the next one? We better be prepared.”

for providing the estimate that the revenue of local nonprofits is down $32 million so far this year. The figure is based primarily on a survey of 300 organizations, Lloyd said, adding that arts-related organizations have taken much of the hit.Foundations that provide much of the funding have lost a lot of money. Corporations likely have cut back on their giving, Lloyd said.“And individual donors, I think, are scared,” he said. “They’re losing their jobs, and the furloughs.”

Lloyd does not expect things to stay the same for nonprofits, even after a COVID-19 vaccine is created and the economy recov-ers.Memphis Leadership Foundation’s staff and board oversee 14 nonprofits, like Las Americas, until they are ready to form their own 501 (c)(3) structures and board. The foundation also provides back-office sup-port to another 20 organizations.Among the lasting changes will be “pandemic policies,” Lloyd said. The foundation re-ceives government funding for some of its organizations. Recently, the foundation has been required to have a pandemic policy to continue to receive the support. One new requirement is that organizations have a succession plan in case the chief executive or board chair contracts the virus.Lloyd lik-ens the effects of COVID-19 to a blizzard, a winter season and possibly an ice age.“Now, we are in a blizzard,” he said. “Everything is changing rapidly like a hurricane. There’s relief that needs to plug the gaps and stay alive.”After a blizzard comes the winter. “That’s when things die down and you start recovering,” he said. “If possible, you avoid the ice age.”COVID-19 would have an ice-age effect if “winter sets in and things shut down for good,” he said.

continuing technological innovation, particular in minimally invasive proce-dures and products, fueling growth after the COVID-19 threat subsides.Moody’s Investors Service in mid-March reduced the outlook for the U.S. medical device in-dustry from “positive” to “stable” because of lower sales.“We expect a pullback in consumption in the first half of the year, followed by a moderate recovery, assum-ing global efforts to arrest the spread of coronavirus are successful,” Moody’s se-nior vice president Scott Tuhy said.

Dublin-based Medtronic employs about 1,400 at its spinal unit in Mem-phis, which includes the Pyramid office campus off Brooks Road in the White-haven area.

The office campus is currently closed to non-essential external visitors and non-business-critical employees. A ma-jority of Pyramid campus employees are able to work from home.A small number in the Spine Research & Development lab are still reporting to the office because their jobs are hands-on and require spe-cialty equipment. Medtronic is screening people entering the campus, encouraging social distancing and frequently cleaning and sterilizing work areas. The Medtronic Memphis Distribution Center on Swin-nea Road handles U.S. and global orders for the Cardiac & Vascular Group and Restorative Therapies Group products, said Eric Epperson, Medtronic senior director, communications, Restorative Therapies Group.

The center is operating at full capacity “to ensure our life-restoring therapies are available to patients who need them,” Ep-person said. Included are products used in the treatment of stroke, atrial fibril-lation, coronary artery disease, chronic pain and other diseases. The distribution center is subject to a range of protective measures including staggered breaks to reduce crowds in common areas.Roy Smith, executive director of the Great-er Memphis Medical Device Council, said the Memphis area’s original equip-ment manufacturers have continued production with limited impact from coronavirus.

“This is likely a result of that most of the Memphis OEMs serve global markets and also have trauma products within their portfolios that aren’t impacted by the delays associated with elective sur-geries,” Smith said.

“A large number of the device com-panies in the Memphis area are contract manufacturers, meaning they provide ad-ditional capacity to the industry but do not provide products directly to hospitals or surgery centers. Depending on their customers, these companies are the most at risk due to the delay of elective sur-geries,” Smith said. Some area businesses have been approached about helping produce personal protective equipment for front-line medical workers, he said.

“While there has been an openness to helping, the international providers have ramped up significantly to meet the needed PPE,” Smith said.

“There are more than 8,000 Mem-phians who work for medical device com-panies and another 10,000 who work for companies that provide goods and ser-vices to the industry,” he continued.

“The sooner this pandemic is over, the better it will be for those directly affected by the virus and those whose livelihood is impacted by it.”
