Description
Crisantemo is a top down hat worked in the round, with a border made of single crochet and picots. Crisantemo can be worn with the picots facing outside or facing inside (in this case, the stitch pattern will also look more texturized).
Notes
US crochet terminology is used in this pattern. For UK readers: US single crochet = double crochet, US double crochet = treble crochet.
Working the frst few rounds, the project will look “wonky” and convex. Do not worry, it will take the shape of a hat crocheting the next rounds.
Remember to always put the stitchmarker in the last triangle (see below) of the last completed round.
Stitches, techniques, abbreviations
Chain stitch (ch); double crochet (dc); picot (P); repeat (r); round/s (rnd); single crochet (sc); slip stitch (sl st); together (tog); triangle (T).
Special stitches
Picot: ch 3, sl st into top of sc made before the ch-3.
Triangle (T): ch 6, skip 3 ch (the frst 3 ch of each T count as a dc), work 3 dc tog into the next 3 ch (i.e. work 1 dc without completing it in each one of the next 3 ch, then yarn over and close all 4 loops on the hook together).
Instructions
1 rnd: Leaving a 20 cm tail (you will use it later to close the small hole at the centre of the hat), crochet 3 T; join the frst and the last T tog with a sl st in the frst ch (the one nearest to the slip knot). Now you have a triangle-shaped hole surrounded by 3 triangles.
2 rnd: * 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 group (counting as a dc) of next T, 1 T, 1 sc in the centre hole *; rep from * to * 3 times; (6 T). Place marker in the last T. Remember to move your marker in the last T of each following rnd.
3 rnd: * 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 group of next T, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd *; rep from * to * 5 times, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 group of next T; (11 T).
4 rnd: * 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T (locking them tog) *; rep from * to * 5 times, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd; (11 T).
5 rnd: 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T, * 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T
of previous rnd, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 group of next T *; rep from * to * 9 times, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd; (20 T).
6 rnd: * 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd *; rep from * to * 10 times; (20 T).
MEDIUM SIZE ONLY
7-16 rnd: * 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd *; rep from * to * 10 times; (20 T).
LARGE SIZE ONLY
7 rnd: (1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd) 2 times, * 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T (1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 group of next T) 2 times, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd*; rep from * to * 3 times, (1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T, 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd) 2 times, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T; (26 T).
8-18 rnd: * 1 T, 1 sc in space between next 2 T of previous rnd, 1 T, ch 1, 1 sl st in top of the ch-3 groups of next 2 T * 13 times; (26 T).
ALL SIZES
Border1 T, 1 sc in same space, work 3 sc, 1 P on top corner, 3 sc in each T.
FinishingBreak yarn. Seam closed the center hole using yarn tail, weaving it on top of dc stitches and pulling lightly. You can also hide the small hole with a button or a pom pom.
Weave in ends. Wash Crisantemo according to the ball band instructions and let it dry on a fat surface. If you want to enhance the picots, lightly block the hat putting a pin in each picot.
Tanks to Marinella and Erika for testing the pattern.
