CRIME WATCH UPDATE

HAVE YOU BEEN FLASHED?

DARREN DATTALO, CRIME WATCH COORDINATOR

I recently became aware of a flasher who has visited our area several times over the last

two years.

When a woman got flashed for the second time in 18 months, she posted on NextDoor.com, and several other women reported having been flashed by someone matching the same description over the same time period.

The suspect uses the ruse of stopping his car to ask for directions. When the woman is approached, he exposes himself. Thus far, there has been no attempt at abduction or any further contact.

Most of the reports have been between Central and Skillman, but one was closer to the White Rock Spillway. The incidents all seem to be midday on weekdays.

The description of the suspect is a Hispanic male with short spiky hair. He’s thought to be mid-20s with a medium build. A couple of reports have him wearing a tight fitting shirt and short shorts with a bandage on his thigh.

Older reports had him driving an older red coupe, but recent reports are a newer silver coupe, possibly an Infinity G35. First two letters of the license plate are “AW”. If you see a vehicle like this, try to get the rest of the license plate and please contact 911 and send me an email at [email protected] so that I can follow up.

If someone flags you down for help, make a mental note of the license plate. And don’t approach if you feel uncomfortable.

KEITH ALLEN—DALLAS POLICE

Many of you and/or your neighbors take advantage of the tree-lined (Thank goodness for shade.) streets and sidewalks to walk, run, or bike. The Delmar/Concho “corridors” are very popular routes for these types of activity.

Folks with their dogs and/or strollers can be found during most hours when the weather is decent. I will be the first to admit that keeping my dog from tangling me up in their leash is a full-time effort. I can only imagine the challenge of navigating a stroller.

What is a little exercise without some tunes? What good are tunes if you can’t hear them? So the ubiquitous ear buds are an absolute necessity. The “miracle” of Bluetooth technology provides the option of placing our phones (or mp3 player if you still have one) out of the way to keep our hands free – which in my case would be to untangle the dog.

Therein lies the dilemma. If you need your phone in an instant, how quickly can you get to it? The use of the ear buds already causes some loss of “situational awareness,” so by the time you realize the need for something other than music, precious seconds have already elapsed.

The recent local incident of the “flasher/pervert” and the national incident in Iowa have highlighted the importance of being able to react and access your phone quickly. The details of both incidents should cause you to examine how you manage your phone – the one device that serves as a terrific prevention tool.

The ability to be ready to capture anything suspicious and/or criminal will cause a suspect to at least pause their activities if they believe they are going to be identified. It may not cause every suspect, every time, to flee, but it is one of the best options available to you. Hopefully no harm will come to anyone, but in the Iowa case the evidence obtained from her phone was crucial to the investigative process.

Keep your phone readily available, be prepared to switch from tunes/conversation to the camera/video feature, and don’t lose track of what is going on around you. I find these tasks infinitely easier than waking my dog. Stay safe.

It’s the start of a new school year which means it’s time to get involved in new school/neighborhood groups including the rapidly growing Pre-Geneva Association (formerly Pre-Lee).

We are excited to have a name that reflects our support for our neighborhood school, Geneva Heights Elementary. We have begun the process of transitioning into our new name, so you’ll still see our friendly Cougar Cub in and around the neighborhood, but with slightly different branding.

Pre-G’s group of young parents already has 100 families that have officially joined and are enjoying tons of get-togethers. Last year and the first part of 2018 included many successful events that continue this neighborhood group’s mission to connect parents and kiddos, ages 0-5, with each other and the school. This includes Pre-G Soccer, a successful cornhole tournament resulting in $1,000 donated to Lee’s outdoor science lab, numerous playdates, an exclusive “babysitter directory,” 12 Mom Night Outs, 5 Dad Night Outs, a cookie decorating party, a kick-off-to-summer picnic at Geneva Heights, and countless new friendships.

We have many more great events this year including Donuts with Dad at Fire Station 17 on Sept. 22nd as well as the 2nd Annual Tossing for Tots Cornhole Tournament on October 13th.

Check out our website (New website coming soon!) – PreLeeDallas.com – if you want to join or learn more about our group and upcoming events. Remember, Pre-G membership is open to everyone in our community. Anyone is welcome as a member, donor, or community business partner.

Membership is $25 per family for the calendar year, and dues are tax exempt because we have our 501(c)(3) status.

Cheers to the start of a new school year which will be marked with a new name, Pre-Geneva Association, or simply put, Pre-G! Go Cougars!

TIETZE PARK PLANS

Preliminary plans for the Tietze pool renovation indicate that the current single-use pool will be replaced by a four-lane lap pool, a children’s pool, and a water slide that will be separate from the lap and kid pools.

The south side of the children’s pool will have a zero entry and spray features with a play structure in the middle of the pool. The lap pool will have steps leading into the water and also feature removable starting blocks for Tietze Torpedo racing meets. The climbing wall will also be replaced with a new challenging climbing surface.

The pool deck will be scored concrete with several cantilevered shade structures and umbrellas around the perimeter of the pool. There will be new grass planted on a lawn in the northeast corner. The fence will be replaced, and all of the new construction will be in an area only slightly larger than the current size.

Built in 1947, the pool with its Palo Pinto stone bath house and pavilion is a treasure with historic memories such as the 70-year collection of life-guard signatures on the walls and ceiling of the pool’s office storeroom. The city has engaged a preservation architect to design new restrooms, a picnic pavilion, an office, and a concession area. All of these spaces will be within the existing footprint of the 1930s-era sandstone structures.

Funds for the construction of the new pools come from the 2015 sale of 257 acres of City of Dallas-owned property adjacent to Lake Ray Hubbard to the City of Rowlett. The sale netted nearly $32 million that was committed to the construction of new pools.

Rain dampened attendance, but many area neighbors took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Tietze Park Family Neighborhood Aquatics Center on August 11th.

The ceremony included comments by Dallas Parks Director Willis Winters, District 14 City Councilmember Philip Kingston, and District 14 Park Board Member Paul Sims. Officials commended Friends of Tietze Park Foundation for their past and ongoing efforts for Tietze Park. Tietze is recognized the best park in the system because of continued strong neighborhood support.

Additional City and Park Department officials joined the group for the ceremonial sod-turning. They invited FOTP and neighborhood representatives including LGNA president Debbie Daniel, Lakewood Heights NA president Tom Aubrey, and Mary Dewey representing Wilshire Heights NA to do the same.

The announced Tietze Splash event had been scheduled for the same time but had to be cancelled because of the inclement weather. As the drizzle progressed to rain, attendees moved to the pavilion. They were graciously asked to join a St. Thomas Aquinas class party.

Many thanks to all who came out to help with Tietze Splash and who donated delicious snacks. A fond farewell to one of the most historied and beloved pools in the Dallas Park system. We look forward to the next exciting chapter for aquatics in our neighborhood in 2019. Lisa Marshall

Fall 2018 – Anticipation of SpringAs fall arrives and we get the urge to get our hands back into the soil, it’s time to plan for spring blooms. Fall is the best time to divide, thin and share, sow larkspur, poppy and other spring wildflowers, shop nurseries for end of season sales on perennials, and plant tulips and other spring-blooming bulbs.

I recently came across this Dallas Arboretum guide for planting fall bulbs and thought it worthy of sharing:

1. Pick the best bulbs. Choose spring-blooming bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, allium, leucojum,

ranunculus and muscari from a reputable nursery. Squeeze each bulb gently to make sure they are firm. If the

bulb is not firm, it may not produce many (if any) blooms. Certain bulbs like tulips require a 6-10 week chilling period

prior to planting. This can be done in your refrigerator away from fruits.

2. Pick the right day to plant. Choose a warmer day to plant your bulbs. These spring-blooming bulbs can be planted until mid-January.

3. Pick a place. Choose an area of your garden that gets lots of sun and has well-drained soil.

4. Prepare. Be sure to work a few inches of compost into the soil before planting.

5. Place. Make sure to plant your tulips about 2 to 4 inches apart. Set them in clusters instead of rows because you’ll want to see them bloom together, not individually. Remember to plant generously, as some of the bulbs may not sprout.

6. Plant. Follow this basic rule for planting your spring-blooming bulbs: Plant your bulbs at a depth of three times the bulb’s circumference (the width of the bulb). For most tulips and daffodils, that’s about 6 inches.

7. Water. Immediately after you cover your bulbs with good garden soil, water generously.

8. Fertilize. After planting, apply high nitrogen fertilizer.

9. Mulch. Use mulch to keep the weeds out and the moisture in.

Hope this helps get you in the mood for some fall gardening after another long hot dry Texas summer. Dig in now and enjoy the results next spring.

Many thanks to all who donated to help kids in a time of need. Special thanks to those kiddos who dropped by to donate their personal toys. In the next few weeks, all the stuffed toys will be loaded up and delivered to DPD officers at Central Patrol. Games, books, and puzzles will be delivered to Jubilee Center for their community programs.

Thank you, LGNA-area residents, for your generosity. Keep saving those gently used toys, games and books for LGNA’s next Toys for Cops collection in December!!

Eligible residents must be 60 years of age or older and reside within the City of Dallas. Medical facilities must be located within the City of Dallas.

Services are door-to-door and free to eligible clients. Wheelchair vehicles are available upon request. For additional information and program enrollment, call 214-670-7235.

GARBAGE & RECYCLING COLLECTION DELAYS The City of Dallas announced in August that some customers are experiencing late garbage and recycling collection. The City anticipated some continued delays due to lower than required collection vehicle availability.

Residents may experience collection times that are later than normal, and in some isolated instances, some residents may not receive collection until the following morning. In the near term, there is increased likelihood of collection delays over the next 90-120 days depending on daily collection vehicle availability. As new collection vehicles arrive, they will be put into service.

Sanitation will notify 3-1-1 each evening of which areas will be affected by service delays. Information including the routes, boundaries of affected areas, and estimated collection time the following day will be shared with 3-1-1.

MOCKINGBIRD ELEMENTARY EARLY CHILDHOOD PTOCalling families with young ones zoned for Mockingbird Elementary. Come join us in organizing our Early Childhood Parent Teacher Organization.

Have you ever wondered why there isn’t an early childhood organization for Mockingbird Elementary? Wait no longer! We are in the early stages of organizing an ECPTO to support parents with young children in the area, provide backing of local schools, and have fun!

The first public organizational meeting was scheduled for 7:30 on September 13 so that interested parents could meet and greet other interested neighboring families. The program included discussions about planning upcoming events, offer chances to volunteer, and work on a name for the organization.

If you missed the event, it’s not too late to get involved. More socials are planned so that members of the group can get acquainted with the organiz- ation and with each other.

We’re setting up 501(c)(3) status to be official, and we’re in the process of designing a logo. Contact [email protected] for more information.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT —SAVE THE DATEThis is a great opportunity to have some fun, meet some neighbors, and learn a little something about health and safety. Check out the manila flyer that accompanies this newsletter. The event will be our regularly scheduled Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association event.

DiD yoU know?DiD yoU know?SENIOR MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM (SMTP) The City of Dallas’ SMTP provides transport services to medical facilities for low-moderate income seniors.

WHAT National Night Out

LGNA’s summer Toys for Cops meet-and-greet on August 18 was a huge success, thanks to the many neighbors and friends who donated who donated 450+ gently used soft toys, games, and books. Dallas Police Department officers keep soft toys in their vehicle trunks and give to distressed children they encounter in the field. LGNA has Central Patrol’s only organized event to collect toys for this worthy cause.

Dallas Police Department officers joined LGNA neighbors at the Saturday morning event held at the home of LGNA members, Jean and Brian McAulay. Neighbors also enjoyed great pizza from Greenville Avenue Pizza Company on Lowest Greenville. Thank you, Molly and Sammy Mandell at GAPCo for supporting our neighborhood.

On Tuesday, October 2, the tradition of neighborhood cooperation, education, and fun will again find hundreds of area residents enjoying National Night Out at Tietze Park. Representatives from two neighborhood associations – Lower Greenville and Lakewood Heights – and Friends of Tietze Park Foundation have assured an evening of fun and information. This year’s event will take place from 5:30 until dark.

National Night Out at Tietze Park is designed to strengthen community relationship between residents and public service organizations such as police, city departments and charitable organizations that serve the community and make our neighborhood a better place.

The event attracts 800-1,000 attendees each year. As usual we will have face painters, hotdogs, kids activities, and bounce houses. Tietze pool renovations may impact part of the pavilion area, but plans are to bypass any inconvenient areas.

TOYS FOR COPS
