Things that worry me about IL: Terminology Statistics and evaluation Assumptions Lack of agreement in the profession about IL Resourcing, priorities and return on effort What the users are telling us
What are we talking about ? Information Literacy Life long learning Face to face Extended sessions Generic principles “They should know this”
Contextual skills Just in time Online, embedded Small chunks Specific tools “They want to know that”
Statistics Average for Victorian CAUL respondents of 14,913
persons in “face to face presentations made as part of formal bibliographic instruction programs and through other planned class presentations, orientation sessions and tours.
Average total students at Victorian CAUL institutions:
46,197
Statistics – two conclusions:1. We aren’t getting anywhere near interacting with the
bulk of our audience with the face to face IL endeavour.
2. The way we are collecting and sharing these very basic statistics is not very illuminating.

Do we need to check the underlying assumptions about search?
Implicit assumption that the students need Librarians to show them how to search?
