1. Design Space “canvas,” the workspace where all designs are created, edited, colored, etc. A ruler along the top and left side of the screen identify scale.

2. Image placed onto the canvas, either from the Images, Shapes, or Upload menus. Once placed on the canvas, the various other tools can be used to modify and customize it.

3. Use the + and - symbols to zoom in and out on your design.

4. Use this button to access the Cricut Design Space Image Library in order to select an image to place on the canvas.

5. Use this button to add a text block to the canvas.

6. Use this button to add a variety of basic (free) shapes to the canvas.7. Use this button to upload your own graph-ics (PNGs, SVGs, JPEGs), which can then be modified, customized and cut just like Cricut-brand images.

8. Un-do and Re-do buttons will only highlight when actions are possible.

9. Edit button contains basic sub-commands such as Cut, Copy, and Paste; however, standard keyboard shortcuts also work.

10. Arrange button allows you to re-order images from top to bottom. Access these same commands by right-clicking on the mouse.

11. Flip button allows any image to be flipped either horizontally or vertically.12. Lock and un-lock an image’s proportions and manually type in height and width speci-fications.13. Rotate any image by degree. Rotation can also be done using the upper right handle on any selected image.14. Text edit toolbar will only appear once text is added to the design canvas.15. Each image, when selected, includes height and width indications, as well as tools for:

16. Access your saved projects.

17. Save your project.

18. Send your project to be cut.

19. Layers Panel, where, at-a-glance you can see a list of the various designs on your canvas, as well as their colors and attribute (cut, pen, score, print-and-cut).

20. Each design placed onto the canvas will be listed here on individual lines, showing both its color and attribute. The line will shade to grey when selected. The eye symbol toggles on and off to hide image on the canvas without having to delete it.

21. The Color Sync menu allows you to easily change colors of any design by dragging and dropping it to other colors already represented on the canvas.

22. Group two or more selected items. NOTE: Grouping is only a command for work-ing on the design canvas. Grouped images will not be cut together unless they are Attached.23. Ungroup two or more selected items.

24. Quickly and easily duplicate any image or groups of images.

25. Delete any image or group of images. You can also delete by clicking the red X on the upper left corner of an image, as well as using the keyboard Delete key.

26. The Slice Tool can only be used on two ungrouped images at a time, and will only highlight when the action is possible.

27. The Weld Tool can be used to combine two or more images into one solid cut with no seam. It will only highlight when the action is possible.

28. The Attach Tool is used to attach text or score lines to shapes, as well as to ensure certain objects are cut with intended layouts or spacing. Anything that is attached must be the same color.

29. The Flatten Tool will turn any cut file into a Print-and-Cut image; this action can be done and un-done at any time.

30. The Contour Tool will turn any discon-nected part of a design on or off.

CraftablesVinyl is by far the medium I work with the most, so I am often on the lookout for the best prices. After relying on Amazon and Ebay for purchasing my Oracle vinyl, I’ve recently discovered that Craftables is another great choice! Not only are their prices exceptional, but their sheet and roll options give you amazing flexibility in adding lots of colors to your stash. What I Buy Here: Rolls of Oracle vinyl in the colors I use most frequently. I like their combination packs to give me smaller cuts of many colors. And their heat-transfer vinyl (same as iron-on) is the cheapest I’ve found!

Font BundlesI love finding the perfect fonts for my projects, but I don’t like to shell out a lot of money for them. Font Bundles carries thousands of fonts for incredible prices. They also regularly release bundles that make getting dozens of fun fonts incredibly inexpensive. Font Bundles also shares a Free Weekly Font, so this is another mailing list I always stay subscribed to.What I Buy Here: I keep my eye out each week for their free fonts and frequently visit their free library before buying a font. I most often buy their regularly released bundles because the deals are too good to pass up.

Design BundlesThe Cricut Design Space Image Library has so many wonderful and awesome designs available. However, there are times when I want something specific or different, and the library just doesn’t have it. Although I’ve been known to use Etsy and Google to find images for my projects, I also like to regularly visit Design Bundles. Like Font Bundles, they often release mega-sets of awesome clipart, SVG files (those are the cut files you need for your Cricut!), patterns, and more. S H O P P I N G F O R C R I C U T S U P P L I E SYou can buy craft supplies and Cricut accessories from many major craft retailers, as well as online. After buying lots of supplies and comparing lots of prices, here are my favorite retailers and what I buy from them!

USE THE SLICE TOOL TO CROP. To use Slice as a cropping tool, place a shape onto your canvas from the Shapes menu on the left-hand toolbar. For straight-line crops, use a rectangle; to crop a round image, use a circle. Unlock the shape's dimensions and re-size it to cover whatever it is you want to crop out. Select the two images and select Slice. Once you pull everything apart, you will see that whatever was under the cropping shape has been sliced off, and you can delete parts of the image no longer needed..

SLICE INSTEAD OF LAYER. For complicated multi-layer designs that require precise spacing, consider slicing your designs out of the very bottom layer. Then place the remaining layers into the blank openings (instead of on top a solid cut).

By slicing letters or designs out of a solid shape, the Cricut will maintain your perfect spacing without you having to place each and every element of the design by hand.

T I P S & T R I C K STROUBLESHOOTING. If, for some reason, the Slice Tool is not highlighted for you, ensure that all of your images are ungrouped and unattached.

Also, you can only slice two images at once, so if you have multiple slices to make on a single image, you will need to do them one at a time.

W H E R E I S S L I C E L O C A T E D ?W H A T I S S L I C E ?The Slice Tool does exactly what it sounds like: it “slices” one image out of anoth-er. Instead of creating a design with the outline of an image, you create a new/dif-ferent design by cutting out or removing an image from another image or shape.

H O W T O U S E S L I C E(1) Place the two images you want to Slice onto your design canvas. Be sure to place whatever image you want cut out of the other on top. (2) Select the two objects (check to make sure they are both selected in the right-hand Layers Panel), then click the Slice Tool on the bottom toolbar of the right-hand panel. (3) Pull off the original top image to see that your bottom image has indeed been sliced.

NOTE: When you first use the Slice Tool, it will appear that nothing happened; your images will look exactly the same. But if you look over to the right-hand layers panel, you will notice that the original two images have been sliced into three. If you pull all the layers apart, you will indeed see that the very bottom layer was sliced by the top one.

The Slice Tool is the far left buttonon the very bottom of the right-hand panel.

Notice in the right-hand Layers Panel that the square is still solid.

The greyed background on the Layers Panel indicates which objects are selected.

Once sliced, the Layers Panel will reveal three images instead of the original two.

CREATE YOUR OWN DESIGNS. Above, notice how three (free) circles were Welded together to create a snowman. Every single image, including the free shapes from the Shapes menu, can be Welded together to create new designs. If you don’t own or want to pay for a specific image, see if you can Weld other designs that are free or that you already own to make what you want.

EXTEND PATTERNS & BORDERS. Many border and pattern designs in the Cricut Design Space Library are finite, meaning they don’t go on forever. If you re-size these patterns, you often distort the scale of the original design. The Weld Tool allows you to extend borders and patterns infinitely without having to sacrifice other dimensions.

To do so, overlap several duplicates of the same border or pattern end-to-end then Weld them together.

T I P S & T R I C K SFONT SCRIPTS. When using a font script, you may notice that, even if you reduce the spacing between letters, the letters will still be cut individually rather than a solid, cursive word.

Once you reduce the space between each letter so that they all overlap, ungroup the letters and then Weld them back together to create a single cut.

W H E R E I S W E L D L O C A T E D ?W H A T I S W E L D ?The Weld Tool is exactly what it sounds like: a tool that allows you to take two completely distinct designs and weld them together into a single image with no remaining seam or cut line where the two designs initially intersected.

H O W T O U S E W E L D(1) Place 2+ images you want to Weld together onto your design canvas. (2) Select the images you want to Weld (check to make sure they are all selected in the right-hand Layers Panel), then click the Weld Tool on the bottom toolbar of the right-hand panel. (3) Notice that instead of separate images, there is now one image (including all the original images) in the right-hand Layers Panel.

NOTE: Weld is typically used to conjoin two separate images into one, seamless image that will be cut as one continuous piece. However, the Weld Tool can be used to join 2+ images whether they are touching or not. In this way, the Weld Tool can be used in place of the Group function; however, it cannot be un-done.

The Weld Tool is the second-to-left buttonon the very bottom of the right-hand panel.

In the right-hand Layers Panel, the 3 orange circles are 3 distinct cuts.

You can tell all 3 circles are selected because they are greyed out in the Layers Panel.

Notice that instead of three distinct circles, there is now only one welded image in the Layers Panel.

DON’T USE ATTACH WHEN:~ You need (many) cuts of the same shape in the same color, but don’t need the spacing/pattern maintained because either:

~ You are going to place cuts individually, by hand, onto your final project~ You are trying to conserve your cutting material

~You want an image cut in a very specific spot on your cutting mat. Instead, drag and drop the image to where you want it on the CUT PREVIEW screen.

USE ATTACH WHEN:~ You want your images to cut exactly as they are designed on your canvas, with all of the sizing and spacing perfectly maintained.

~ You want text or score lines directly on a specific shape and/or in a specific place.

~ Images are the same color and should be cut together (by Attaching two images, both shapes will be cut from the same color).

T I P S & T R I C K SATTACH VS. GROUP. Attach is often confused with the Group function. Grouping is only a function used when designing on your canvas to move, size, and copy images. Grouping, however, DOES NOT translate to how a design is actually cut on your mat.

However, once images are Attached to each other and you hit “Make It,” your images will cut laid out exactly as you designed them!

W H E R E I S A T T A C H L O C A T E D ?

The Attach Tool is the middle buttonon the very bottom of the right-hand panel.

Before Attaching, make sure your spacing is exactly as you want it when cut.

You can tell all stars are selected because they are greyed out in the Layers Panel.

Notice that once Attached, the stars are now under an Attached group.

W H A T I S A T T A C H ?The Attach Tool is the most confusing tool in all of Cricut Design Space. It is used to attach selected shapes to each other, whether they are touching or not, specifi-cally for cutting.

When 2+ images of the same color are sent to cut, the software will automatically move images on your cut mat, no matter how they are laid out on your canvas, to use the least amount of material as possible. However, if you want your design to cut EXACTLY as you designed it on your canvas, you will need to Attach those images together in order to maintain the precise spacing and alignment.

H O W T O U S E A T T A C H(1) Place 2+ images you want to Attach together onto your design canvas. (2) Select the images you want to Attach (check to make sure they are all selected in the right-hand Layers Panel), then click the Attach Tool on the bottom toolbar of the right-hand panel. (3) While the individual images remain separate cuts, notice they are now grouped under an Attached set in the right-hand Layers Panel.

GET MORE FROM EACH IMAGE. The Contour Tool is the most powerful way to create addition-al matching images from a single design. By Contouring out different pieces, you can then rotate, re-size, re-color, and further modify any aspects of any design to create truly unique projects!

SIMPLIFY DESIGNS. If an image is too intricate or you’re worried about your machine cutting details precisely, you can use the Contour Tool to simplify it.

RECOLOR DESIGNS. The Contour Tool is a great way to re-color various elements of a single-layer design. Simply duplicate the design for as many colors as you want to use, and then use the Contour Tool to eliminate elements by color.

T I P S & T R I C K STROUBLESHOOTING. The Contour Tool will work on any ungrouped, unattached image. If you click on an image and the Contour Tool does not highlight, be sure it is isolated. The Contour Tool can also be used to turn on/off parts of images that have already been Welded or Sliced.

You can Contour out any line in any design, including the main outline. However, an image always has to have at least one element turned on to be cut.

W H E R E I S C O N T O U R L O C A T E D ?

The Contour Tool is the far right buttonon the very bottom of the right-hand panel.

The Contour Tool works best with images that have separate, non-connected, elements.

You can turn any part of the design on or off by using the menu on the right or the image itself.

The bottom half of the original design is now “gone.” The “removed” elements can be turned back on at any time.

W H A T I S C O N T O U R ?The best way to think of the Contour Tool is as an “On/Off Button;” as in, this tool allows you to turn on and off ANY cut line in ANY cut file, thereby letting you customize any image in countless ways.

H O W T O U S E C O N T O U R(1) Place any image onto your design canvas. Ensure it is ungrouped and unat-tached from any other images. (2) Select the image and click the Contour Tool on the bottom right-side toolbar. A new window will open that shows each individual element of the design. Each unconnected element can be toggled on and off from the original design. By turning the element off, it will not be cut. You can select which elements to turn on/off by clicking in the menu to the right or on the grey image inside the Contour menu. (3) After you turn on/off any elements you want, click out of the white Contour menu to close it. You will notice that any element you turned off is no longer part of your design. You can go back into the Contour Tool and turn elements on/off at any time.

W H A T F I L E T Y P E S C A N B E U P L O A D E D ?Almost any JPEG, PNG, SVG, GIF, BMP, or DXF can be imported into Cricut Design Space and made into a cuttable file. However, you will have the best luck with PNG and SVG files. When choosing images to import, it is helpful (although not required) to find images with transparent backgrounds (PNGs) that are large, crisp, and clean versions of simple designs. SVG. SVGs are ready-made cut files (they are the file type Cricut Design Spaces uses and turns other images into); they are the easiest to import and will give you the best results.PNG. PNGs are images with a transparent background. Although not as easy to use as SVGs, these images clean up nicely and will cut well on your Cricut.JPEG. JPEG images will have a solid background, meaning they will require a bit more work to get them cut-ready. Be sure to look for high-resolution, simple JPEG images to use.

W H Y U P L O A D Y O U R O W N I M A G E S ?Although the Cricut Design Space Image Library has an extensive collection of images, you may want to cut something you create yourself (like your own hand lettering) or something that wouldn’t be found in the image library (e.g., school/work/team logos, characters, images you find/buy online, etc). Within Cricut Design Space, you can easily turn (almost) any JPEG, PNG, SVG, GIF, BMP, or DXF file into a cuttable image.

W H E R E D O Y O U F I N D I M A G E S ?Simple and clean images can easily be found for free via Google search using words such as “clipart,” “icons,” “symbol,” or “coloring page.”

You can also find ready-to-cut files (such as SVGs and PNGs) on Pinterest and Etsy, or design library sites such as Design Bundles and Creative Market.

U P L O A D I N G I M A G E S W I T H T R A N S P A R E N T B A C K G R O U N D S(1) Click the “Upload” button on the very bottom of the left-side toolbar. (2) Click the green “Upload Image” button, and then select an image you already have saved to your computer (not shown). (3) Your selected image will populate on the left-hand side of the screen. You can then choose if it’s a Simple, Moderate or Complex image, based on the descriptions. (4) Once you click continue, you will be able to clean up the image by clicking on various elements of the uploaded design. Use the eraser, zoom, and un-do tools as needed to get your design exactly as you want it. However, since your image already has a transparent background, you won’t likely need to do much editing. (5) On the following screen, select either Print Then Cut (to print the image on your home printer) or Cut image (to cut the image with your Cricut as you would any other design). Consider re-naming the design so you can easily find it in the future. (6) Once complete, your uploaded image will appear in the Upload menu and you will be able to insert it on your design canvas and manipulate it as you would any other image.

PRINT-THEN-CUT. If you are trying to cut out multi-color designs, such as a trademarked image (logo, cartoon character), it is often easier to save it as a Print Then Cut Image rather than a Cut file. This will allow you to upload a single image and cut the entire image at once (using the Print Then Cut feature). If you want to create different cut files for each color/layer of your design, you will need to upload it over and over, isolating out different colors with each save.

ZOOM IN. You may upload an image that has fuzzy borders or tiny details that don’t look quite right once the image is cut. To clean up edges or eliminate these tiny details, use the zoom keys to get in as close as possible, allowing for more precise editing.

PREVIEW CUT. Once you save an uploaded file, you cannot go back in to change it. So, as you clean up designs, use the Preview button (in the bottom left-hand corner) to see how the image will look once it’s cut.

T I P S & T R I C K SERASE LARGE DETAILS. Clicking any element will make it disappear. However, if you are trying to remove large elements or big sections of a design, the eraser tool (along the top left toolbar) is often quicker and easier.

CREATE YOUR OWN PNGs. PNGs really are easier to import into Cricut Design Space since they have nice clean borders. If you have a JPEG you can’t get clean enough, use this easy tutori-al for transforming it into a PNG before upload-ing it to Design Space.

U P L O A D I N G I M A G E S W I T H S O L I D B A C K G R O U N D S(1) Click the “Upload” button on the very bottom of the left-side toolbar. Click the green “Upload Image” button, and then select an image you already have saved to your computer (not shown). (2) Your selected image will populate on the left-hand side of the screen. You can confirm the image has a solidbackground when you don’t see the tiny blue-and-white squares pixelating the background. Next, choose if the design is Simple, Moderate or Complexbased on the descriptions. (3) Once you click continue, you will be able to clean up the image by clicking directly onto various elements of the image. Youcan click on any part of the image itself and also use the eraser, zoom, and un-do/re-do tools to get the design exactly as you want it. (4) As you cleanup the design, ensure you click anywhere on the solid background to remove it. A blue-and-white pixelated design should appear behind the design, indicating it now has a transparent background. You can use the “Preview” button along the bottom of the screen to see how the design will eventually look once cut. (5) On the following screen, select either Print Then Cut (to print the image on your home printer) or Cut image (to cut the image withyour Cricut as you would any other design). Consider re-naming the design so you can easily find it in the future. (6) Once complete, your uploadedimage will appear in the Upload menu and you will be able to insert it on your design canvas and manipulate it as you would any other image..

SCRIPT FONTS. When you use a script font in Cricut Design Space, whether it’s a Cricut font or System font, the letters will not conjoin (rather they will remain individual, spaced-out letters.) To give them a more usual script-like appear-ance: (1) Ungroup the letters. (2) Reduce the spacing between each letter until they are just overlapping. (3) Select all the letters and Weld them back together. NOTE: If you don’t Weld them together, the letters will remain individual cuts even if they are overlapping.

CUT VS. WRITE. When you use a system font, it’s important to note that they are best suited for cutting rather than writing (with the pens). Even if you choose the narrowest of System fonts, when you change it to the Write attribute, it will outline the font rather than create a written line. If you want to have a written look with the pen tools, use one of Cricut’s Writing Style fonts.

T I P S & T R I C K STROUBLESHOOTING. If you recently installed a font onto your computer but don’t see it in the Design Space drop-down menu, save your project and close Design Space. Once you re-open Design Space and your project, any recently-installed fonts should appear.

PROS & CONS. Using System fonts can often be cheaper than using Cricut fonts since you already own them. However, if you want fonts that have layers or can be written with the Cricut Pens, Cricut fonts are a better bet.

When you insert text onto your canvas, the font toolbar along the top will become available.

By clicking on the Font drop-down menu, all your available fonts will appear.

Click “System” along the top toolbar to filter out the fonts available from your computer.

C R I C U T F O N T S V S . S Y S T E M F O N T SWhen inserting text onto your projects, you have the option to use either Cricut fonts or your System fonts. Cricut fonts are designed by Cricut specifically for cutting (some even have layers) or writing, and often have to be purchased (either a la carte or via a Design Space subscription). System fonts are all the fonts installed on your computer, including standard, pre-loaded fonts and any fonts you purchase/download yourself.

H O W T O U S E S Y S T E M F O N T SOnce a font is installed on your computer, you can use it in Cricut Design Space. To use a System font, (1) start by inserting text onto the canvas via the Text button on the left-hand toolbar. Once text is on the canvas, the Font toolbar along the top will become available. (2) Select the dropdown menu under “Font,” and a new menu of all your available fonts will open. (3) Click the word “System” to filter out your system fonts and selectwhichever font you wish.

B E S T P L A C E S T O F I N D G R E A T F O N T SFont Bundles. Font Bundles is a great source for both free and inexpensive fonts. Their bundles are often too good to pass up, and they have a vast collection of tutorials to help you use their fonts on your projects.Etsy. Etsy also has a wealth of available fonts, including bundles, that are reason-ably priced and often pre-formatted as SVGs.DaFont | Font Squirrel. Both sites are excellent resources for FREE fonts, especially themed or novelty fonts.
