RICHARD L. LONG Director Army Structures Laboratory

Richard L. Long is Director of the Army Structures Laboratory at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton , Va .

The laboratory is one of four which make up the U.S. Army Research and Technology Laboratories, headquartered at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif .

Long was formerly Deputy Director for Systems Engineering and Development of the Army Aviation Research and Development Command in St . Louis, Mo. He is a charter memeber of the Senior Executive Service of the federal civil service system.

A native of South Bend , Ind ., Long received bachelor's and master's degrees in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and Princeton University, respectively, and a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University . He also attended the Command and General Staff College. Army War College , Army Management School, Sloan Institute and the Federal Executive Institute .

A retired Army colonel , Long recently received the Commander's Award for Civilian Service in St. Louis . He also hold s the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the Army's second highest award.

Long entered the Army as a second lieutenant in the Artillery Branch in 1942 . Later he was chosen by the l ate Gen. George S. Patton Jr. , as his armored division's observation pilot .

He is master Army aviator " and is ra t ed as a commercial pilot for both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He is a member of the American Helicopter Society and in 1969-70 was national president of the Army Aviation Association of America.

RICHARD LONG NAMED DIRECTOR, STRUCTURES LABORATORY, RTL AVRADCOM

tory, NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. The Structures Laboratory

is one of four labs of the U.S. Army Research & Technology Laboratories (RTL)

(AVRADCOM), NASA Ames Research Center , Moffett Field, Ca. Long was former-

ly Deputy Director of the Directorate for Systems Engineering and Develop-

ment, Army Aviation Research & Development Command (AVRADCOM), St. Louis, Mo.

He is a charter member of the Senior Executive Service of the federal civil

service system.

The retired Army Colonel received the coveted Commander's Award for Ci-

vilian Service from Maj. Gen. Story C. Stevens, AVRADCOM Commander, during

ceremonies held in St. Louis prior to his new assignment. He also holds

the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the Army's 2nd highest award.

AVRADCOM is the higher command of the Army Research and Technology Labora-

tories.

Awards and honors he received during his military career include the

Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clus­

ters, Army Commendation Medal and the Croix de Guerre. He has also been

presented a key to the city of Corpus Christi, Tx., and commendations and

plaques for serving as chairman of meetings, conferences, and symposia at

various Army activities.

Long succeeds Thomas L. Coleman who retired last fall with almost 38

years of federal service.
