THE ISLAND #THE ISLAND#

Heraklion is a modern town (the largest ofthe island, with a population ofapproximately 180,000 inhabitants), and isthe administrative, commercial, industrialand agricultural centre of Crete. Is thecapital of the region of Crete. The strangecoexistence of the beautiful and the ugly, the old and the new, the apparentarchitectural chaos and the mixture ofbuildings from different civilizations, makesthe city really interesting and attractive. The fact that you may walk by theVenetian port enjoying the view of anancient period and in two minutes distanceyou may find yourself having a coffee or adrink in a very modern and trendy café –bar, makes the visitor have a uniquefeeling.

Eleftherios Venizelos square (PlatiaEleftheriou Venizelou), the Lion’s square asthe locals call it, is the city’s traditionalcentre. This will be your first and your lastdestination during a day. Around thissquare you’ll find all the commercialstreets of the town. There are manyrestaurants and taverns offering Cretanspecialities throughout the area and alsomany cafe and bars.

The eastern part of the Heraklionprefecture has some major resorts nearthe sea like Chersonisos, some majorarchaeological sites like Malia, and manyimportant Byzantine churches. Only 5kilometres south from the centre ofHeraklion you can visit Knossos, thelargest and the most brilliant centre ofMinoan civilization.

Great beaches, intensive night life, warmpeople, great cuisine and the strange“game” between the old and the new arepromising unforgettable holidays in theisland.

AirportThe “Nikos Kazantzakis” is one of the threelargest international airports in Greece andis only 10 minutes away from the centre ofHeraklion. If you take a taxi, you will payapproximately 15 euros (including theluggage). You can also take the bus No 1,which takes you to the town centre.
