Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum

On Saturday 14 October I had the privilege to attend the

Mitchell Leadership Forum with our new Student Leadership

Team consisting of our School Captains Rebecca

Longworth, Prathamesh Tarde, Vice Captains Georgia

Wood and Bradden Garlick and House Captains Laura

Devine, Ryan Werner, Eftelya Gursoy, Michael Harrison,

Lauren Leaver, Fergus McLellan, Tara Vidakovic and Aaron Whale.

We spent the session working through the things we believe we do

well at CHS and then the areas needing improvement. The collated

response will be presented to staff and provide valuable input into

developing our School Strategic Plan 2018—2020. Our Student

Leadership Team displayed outstanding capacity to work collegially

and demonstrated the qualities required for the important position of

captaincy. They were exceptional ambassadors for our school

community and even the organisers commented on the fact that they

are a “stand out team of school leaders” who regularly met after a

session to discuss and share ideas. Well done team and many thanks

to Mrs Jones for supporting and mentoring them.

School Parent Survey

During term 4 the Executive Team will be developing a three year

School Strategic Plan 2018-2020. This will provide clear focus on the

strategic directions for school improvement and the strategies

required to promote success. It is vital to gain input from all

stakeholders (particularly parents and carers) to develop an authentic

plan that responds to the needs and expectations of our school community. A link to the

parent survey is included in this Infoline and I would like to encourage all parents to provide

the valuable feedback needed for school improvement. It will take approximately 10 minutes

to complete and I thank you in advance for your contribution.

We have a celebrity amongst us …

Liam Titterton is a Year 8 student in our Support

Unit. At 6 months of age Liam was diagnosed with

ADEM (Acute Demyelinating Encophalomyopathy)

after battling a severe stomach virus. Liam was the

youngest known case diagnosed and left him with

lesions on his brain resulting in spastic dystonic

quadriplegia. This week Liam appeared on channel 7’s

Sunrise in a feature story about The Captains Ride

organised by the Steve Waugh Foundation. …..continued over page

The Captains Ride involves over 70 cyclists riding 800km over a six-day period to raise

The Steve Waugh Foundation provides funding for the needs of young people aged

between 0—25 with rare diseases. They have previously funded items that are out of

the reach of parents and not covered in government funding such as sensory gardens,

swimming pools, portable oxygen and robotic arms. Over the years, The Steve Waugh

Foundation have provided Liam with much needed equipment including a

communication device, a power chair and an upgraded power chair, in total over

$100,000 of essential funding.

The Steve Waugh Foundation is a wonderful organisation, giving parents of children

with rare conditions somewhere to turn to for funding to improve the quality of life for

From the Deputy …

With the HSC in full swing we continue to send our best wishes to the students of Year 12. They have completed

English, Agriculture, Music, PDHPE and Tourism and Travel (VET). Next week is Mathematic and the HSIE subjects.

It’s a nervous time for all but the reports from the students so far is that they feel good about their preparation.

We continue to maintain our high expectation for the students at Crestwood High school in their level of

engagement, their respect and their uniform, (safe, respectful learners). It is extremely pleasing to see the

leadership team resplendent in their blazers and ties for the boys. Many other students are following suit and

wearing trousers and ties in place of the shorts. This gives the school a boost in the community. The Uniform shop

is expecting a delivery of the much anticipated slacks for the girls. Keep an eye on the website and facebook page

for more news.

Today, Emily Foufas-Noakes will compete in the State Final of the Legacy Public Speaking competition. Crestwood

has had National Success in this competition and we are hoping Emily will continue to shine. A small team of

supporters will accompany her to the NSW Art Gallery for the Final. Best wishes Emily.

Spring has brought new growth to the gardens and even with the dry spell the newly landscaped areas are growing

well. An exciting event will use the ‘Environmental Area’ which will be transformed to a magical garden for an

evening for the production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Look for more details of this event on the website

DUKE OF ED BRONZE TEST EXPEDITION

On Thursday 12 October Crestwood’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students set out on their final

Adventurous Journey of the year. The two-day hike took place in Marramarra National Park, where students

worked in teams to navigate a challenging off-track route in the wilderness carrying all their gear (often in excess of

15kg) on their backs.

The group applied the lessons learned on their last hike to maintain an excellent pace and navigate with confidence.

They battled oppressive heat on Thursday and were all very glad to reach camp, our main water source, in the

evening. Mercifully Friday was a little cooler and students were better prepared for the challenging environment.

Congratulations to the 24 students who participated and have now completed the Adventurous Journey

component of their Bronze Award. Keep logging your hours in Physical Recreation, Skills and Service so we can

celebrate your completion soon and we hope to see many of you take on the challenges of the Silver Award next

year.

Thank you to Mr Joel Palmer and Mr Brendon Salhani for joining the Dukes Team. Without your involvement this

hike would not have been possible.

This marks the end of what has been a very successful year for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program at

Crestwood High School, with registered participants increasing from just 7 pioneers in 2012 to nearly 60 in 2017.

If you are a Year 8 student and you think you would like to be part of the program stay tuned for announcements

early next year when we will be recruiting our new Bronze group.

On Wednesday 11th October, three of our Year 11 students, Alex Delgado Hernandez, Eftelya Gursoy

and Siobhan Salzmann showcased their amazing achievements at this year’s Max Potential Showcase at

Castle Hill RSL. Each of these students have earned invaluable leadership skills while contributing to the

local community. Here are their journeys:

“I participated in a 22 week program called Max Potential which focuses on developing youth leadership skills. This included

meetings with my mentor where we developed my goal setting skills, reading “Achieving Authentic Success” by Dr Jenson,

meeting members of the Hills Shire Council (my sponsors), creating a draw-my-own-life video for my “Personal Expression

Project”, writing an article for the “Hills Shire Times,” conducting a community service project (CSP) and volunteering at

North West Disability Services (NWDS), Aberdoon House. For my CSP, I collected art supply donations from Crestwood H.S

staff and students and from the wider community for clients at NWDS. NWDS is an organisation which assists adults in the

local community living with disabilities. Some donations included canvases, coloured paper, glue, glitter, powder paint, felt

paper and paintbrushes. These will make a huge difference for the clients at NWDS allowing them to continue creating art

as NWDS is a non-for-profit organisation which relies heavily on community donations of art supplies. I’d like to thank

everyone for their support and donations and am extremely proud of our community.”

Max Potential Program

My experience at Max Potential has been overwhelmingly positive due to the different and unique personalities I have met dur-

ing my journey. I was pushed to challenge myself and define myself as a leader. My teachers, friends and family have pointed

out that my confidence has improved. The program allowed me to significantly improve my time management skills. This will

not only benefit me at school and at university, but also within the work force when I reach my future career. The chemistry

that my coach and I had during the program was another important feature of the Max Potential program. My coach’s ability to

listen and help me was amazing. I could not have asked for a better coach. The Max Potential program was well planned and

the group sessions worked well. I enjoyed the overall experience and I would urge others to give Max Potential a shot. It is

100% worth it.

Alex Delgado Hernandez

Through Max Potential I was required to complete a Community Service Project, amongst many other personal development

activities, of which I decided to run a series of food drives throughout the Hills Community in an effort to help alleviate the

issue of hunger within Australia. Hunger is a HUGE issue within Australia, affecting around 2 million people per year, half of

which are children. And despite the tremendous effort Food bank does in teaming up with corporations to feed the hungry

they still have to turn away 43,000+ people every month. So in running and collecting food from the multiple food dives I had

set up with BHSNA, The Children’s Doctor, Crestwood High School, Castle Hill RSL, local youth groups and even through

having people (who knew my address) donating at my front door, I knew that every can, packet and bag of non-perishable

groceries I received was going to someone who truly needed it. In the end I ended up collecting 207.5kg worth of food, which

I was told amounted to around 400 meals for those in need—Something that has made me incredibly proud of the

community I live in and their willingness to help. Completing this massive project was incredibly rewarding and I would highly

recommend it to anyone who is looking into it.

next Thursday

Year 7 Gala Day—was held on Tuesday 17th October. All year 7 participated in the day competing

against other schools in Basketball, Touch Football, Netball and Soccer. It was great to see all Year 7

students participating, working as a team and enjoying the day. Congratulations to all of Year 7!

SRC NEWS

With the new SRC team for 2018 elected and ready to go, we have begun preparing for the coming year. We have had two meetings and have started discussing issues we would like to tackle in the next few months, ranging from new bubblers to further inclusion from the support unit and School Spirit Week. We have also begun to plan for Diversity Day which will be held on November 16th 2017 to celebrate diversity within the school community and the importance of embracing difference. The entire team is very excited to buckle down and help to make the school an even better place. If you have any ideas, please approach your grade representative or attend a meeting on Thursday Lunch 1 in Art Room 3.

On Friday 8th of September Crestwood High School hosted a full day band workshop with years 5 and 6 students

from the local primary schools. The day consisted of full band rehearsals and small group workshops which were

run by specialist teachers and our band students. The students, with the sustenance of a tasty sausage sizzle lunch,

were able to fine-tune their particular parts in the small workshop sessions to perform three pieces of music for a

concert at the end of the day. This is the third year we have run the band workshop at Crestwood High School

and it always amazes me how wonderful the whole band sounds in the concert after learning the 3 pieces of music

in one day. Many thanks to our talented conductor Mr Steve Lavis, our music teacher Mr Bamford, Mr Butler and

the other assistant music teachers and executive staff for supporting the day. Also a very big thank you to all the

local primary students who came to join our workshop and to the parents for supporting us. A special thank you

to our sausage chef and GA Mr Fletcher, Tayla McIntosh, Bradley Lau, Jackson Bradley and Grace Lanyon our

senior students and to our amazing band students who consist of years 7,8 and 9 who were wonderful mentors to

the primary students. It was a pleasure to be part of this day and we look forward to next year’s band workshop.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY UNIFORM SHOP

We are seeking to employ a person to assist in the Uniform Shop. As we are now using online ordering and

bedding down some new practices the employee will need to offer us some flexibility as we look to meet the

needs of the community and our peak trading periods.

Initially we are offering casual employment on an irregular basis with some work on weekdays and the first

Saturday of each month during school term. Additional work will be on the weekends either side of Year 7

Orientation (early December) and the last 2 weeks of the January school holidays.

The award we are employing under is General Retail Industry Award MA000004. Current rate is $25.10 per

hour including casual loading. Wages will be paid monthly.

This is one of the largest Garage Sales held in the Hills District each year, and proceeds go toward

deserving community organisations.

We will also be providing refreshments (tea, coffee and cake) during sale hours, together with a

Sausage Sizzle for lunch on both days, and Bacon and Egg rolls for breakfast on Saturday morning.

Enjoy the friendly atmosphere, and pick up a bargain (or two) knowing you are helping those

families who need our assistance within the Hills area.

Due to current roadworks in the area, parking will be PROHIBITED on both sides of Showground

Road. Parking on the north side of Showground Road will be possible in Kentwell Avenue, Worthing
