DC-8 Fuel Load Heavier

Than Its Entire Forerunner The Douglas DC-8 is a big jet,

but its fuel load is staggering. The

fuel load of the new DC-8 weighs

more than the largest piston-en-

gined commercial airliner now

flying in the United States. The

intercontinental DC-8 holds 23,059

gallons of fuel. Each gallon

weighs 6.7 pounds for a total of

154,495.3 pounds. A Douglas DC-

7C at full take-off weight with

seventy-nine passengers, fuel,

mail, baggage and cargo weighs

143,000 pounds, or 11,495.3 pounds

less than the DC-8's fuel load.

pany service began in June, 1927, as|

a carpenter. Two years later he

transferred to Receiving and Ship-

ping as a pumpman. Again, two

years later he transferred to the la-

boratory where he remained. Five

successive promotions progressed

him through the tester ranks until

his final advancement in 1958 made

him tester A, the position he will

have when he retires. A Surinamer,

he plans to retire in Aruba. |

Mr. Croes of the Mechanical-

Storehouse has over thirty year’s

service. He, too, will retire Dec. 1.

Mr. Croes started with Lago in 1930}

as a laborer. He later transferred to

Mechanical-Pipe, then in July, 1935,

he transferred to the Storehouse. He |

will retire a salvageman A. | Mr. Viapree has left on furlough |

preceding retirement. He has over

thirty years of service, and will com-|

plete his company employ as a mem-

ber of the Industrial Relations De-

partment. During Mr. Viapree’s com- |

pany career, he had worked in the

Mechanical and Process Depart-

ments. In the Mechanical Depart- |

ment, where he started October, 1929,

he worked in the machinist craft, |

later the administration office. He |

transferred to LOF in July, 1939, and |

to IR in November, 1950. He retires |

as a job analyst A. Mr. Viapree will

reside in his native British Guiana.

J. A. Moses Mr. Moses, well known to Seroe

Colorado residents, had worked in

the community post office since

March, 1932. He was made postmas-

ter in March, 1944. He first began

his Lago career in July, 1929. His entire thirty years of service were

spent in the General Services De- |

partment. His retirement was effec- |

tive Nov. 1. Born in Trinidad, Mr.

Mr. Geerman of Receiving and Shipping is one year short of com- pleting thirty years of service. He| started to work for Lago in April, | 1925, as a laborer. In February,

1938, he transferred to the wharves,

and has remained there. He will re- |

rity of his Lago service on the

wharves if Mr. Rasmijn. He did not | begin there, however. His first as-

signment was in the laboratory in! April, 1931, as a sample boy. He re- mained in the laboratory until July, |

1935, when he transferred to the dry |

dock. Two years later he transferred

to the wharves. He was promoted to | corporal C, dockman, in September, |

1958. He will retire Dec. 1 after)

twenty-seven years of service.

N. Geerman Mr. Geerman has_ twenty-five

years of service, and all but a few} months of his employ have been)

spent in the pipe craft. His starting

date is September, 1933, and, at the

time, was employed as a laborer. He

retires Dec. 1 as a pipefitter helper A.

Mr. Brown began his twenty-two |

years of service in the dry dock in

March, 1938. In October of that

same year he transferred to the in-

strument craft, where he has re-

mained. Six successive promotions

elevated him to the post of instru-

mentman A, the position he presently

holds and will retire with Dee. 1.

Mr. Brown is a Barbadian, but plans |

to retire in Aruba. |

The ninth man to retire is Mr.

Hayde. His twenty-years of service

comprise a number of jobs and a

number of departments. He began

June, 1934, in the garage. He later

worked at the dry dock, then the

yard and pipe in the Mechanical De-

partment. He transferred to Receiv-

ing and Shipping in April, 1956. He

will retire Dec. 1.

Ivanian Refiner Training at Lago Ahmad Kamali, an employee of the

Iranian Oil Refining Company and head of the cracking reruns at the Abadan refinery, is currently on a two-month training assignment at Lago. During his stay here, Mr. Ka- mali will be familiarized with spe- cific operations in the Industrial Re- lations, Process and Technical Serv- ice Departments.

Mr. Kamali’s first stop was the Industrial Relations Department where he was introduced to safety

and training at Lago. In the Process

;and Technical Service Departments, aspects of field and laboratory vis-

As in the past, employees on the

payroll for only a portion of the year

will share in the additional contri- bution on a pro-rata basis. The Lago

Thrift Foundation has announced

that this pro-rata procedure will

also apply for the coming year. That

is, if an additional contribution is

made at the end of 1961, employees

who have left the payroll for any

reason other than resignation or dis-

charge will receive additional contri-

bution money for the portion of the

year they were on the payroll.

Following is an exmaple of how

the additional contribution works:

An employee who earns Fls. 500 per

month and is in the plan for the

maximum ten per cent (as are over ninety per cent of all employees) has

put Fils. 600 into his thrift account.

With the additional company contri-

bution of 52 cents for each guilder

he has put in, plus the lump sum

payment of Fils. 25, the total addi-

tional company money now credited

to him is Fils. 337. If he wishes, he

can draw out up to Fis. 225 of this

amount in the special Christmas

withdrawal next month.

A similar distribution was an-

nounced for expatriate employees in

the Overseas Thrift Plan.

Sister Clara and Sister Mathia greeted the dawn of Oct. 1, 19 with excitement tempered by courage and dedication. They w: Dominican nursing Sisters, and this was to be their first day charge of Aruba’s first hospital. The building was small, ve small, and the sisters knew that it would hardly accommodate | nursing needs of Aruba. But Sister Clara and Sister Mathia a knew it was a beginning, and was infinitely better than placi seriously ill patients on schooners and sailing them to Curac for treatment, which had been the frequent and only pract before 1920.

The Sister's hospital had four rooms. It wasn’t a new buildir is wasn’t designed to care for the sick. The hospital had four roor one for men and one for women, a treatment room and livi quarters for the two Sisters, It had been named San Pedro di Verona at its dedication Sept. 29, 1920.

The San Pedro Hospital of today is located in the same Sividivi area of Oranjestad that belonged to the original hospital. San Pedro has never moved; it has just spread out.

buted to Jose Ramon Recui. The word is supposedly a corruption of the Spanish sividigua, a plant re- ferred to in Aruba as seida, Mr. Recui owned the Sividivi plantation a century ago. He sold it to Felipe Bareno, who, in 1901, sold it to the English Aruba Gold Concession Company. Gold mining at this date showed little gain, and the company sold its Sividivi holdings to the Ro- man Catholic Church. The church's 1908 purchase, however, was not to affect the establishment of a hos- pital.

It wasn’t until twelve years later that the efforts of a doctor and the highest church authority in the An- tilles reached fruition, albeit mo- dest, in a house turned hospital. A midwife and inadequate nursing fa- cilities were all the people of Aruba had to tend their ills fifty years ago. The dire need for proper medi- cal treatment and convalescent care prompted Dr. G. R. Hopkins to an- peal for the development of suitable hospital facilities. His efforts drew little regard until he approached Bis- hop M. Vuylsteke. May 23, 1919, the Bishop made the decision to bring about a hospital in Aruba. Bishop Vuylsteke is also credited with giv- ing the hospital its name, the signi- ficance of which, however, has been lost to time.

With the Roman Catholic Church in Aruba supplying the impetus, it was announced that the country- home on the Sividivi estate would be converted into a hospital. The Dominican Sisters living in the home were to have quarters con- structed for them elsewhere. A col- lection of funds was organized to help defray the cost of renovating the home into suitable hospital quarters. The hospital was made ready and dedicated Sept. 29, 1920 Sister Clara and Sister Mathia took

As was anticipated, the hospital was far too small to meet the popu- lation’s requirements. Shortly after the hospital opened Sister Clara and Sister Mathia offered their rooms to patients. Additional rooms were constructed on either side of the for- mer countryhouse. San Pedro Hospi- tal, shortly after its beginning, be- gan to enlarge. It has never stopped.

Today the hospital is in the midst of its most ambitious building pro-

ject. According to the hospital's energetic and accommodating direc- tor, Rev. C. Spekle, everything is

being enlarged. The hospital currently has 198

beds, more than double the number

it had two years ago. By the begin- ning of 1963, coincident with the completion of all hospital building projects, San Pedro will have 260 beds. The children’s section received first consideration because the num- ber of children requiring treatment overtaxed existing facilities. The new pediatric section was opened in February of this year. The new con- struction and renovation and alter- ation of existing structures are so extensive that included is the com- plete about-face of San Pedro’s main entrance. As it is today, the hospi- tal’s main entrance is on the south side of the Sividivi area. With the 1963 completion of all construction,

a new entrance, driveways and park- ing space will be located on the north side of the hospital area.

The hospital’s growth has been constant over the years. The need

has always been evident, and the

Dominican Sisters did all they could

to encourage the growth of their

hospital. They, in fact, were so suc-

cessful that they worked them-

selves out of the hospital. In 1940 an

X-ray room was opened; in 1942 a

large addition was added for hospi- talized servicemen of the Allies; in

1945 San Pedro Hospital had eighty

beds; by 1957 the number of hospital

beds had been increased to 115. It

was about this time that the Domini- can nursing order of nuns could no

longer provide personnel to cope with

the increasing demands of the grow-

ing hospital. After thirty-six years

dedicated to building a fine hospital,

which had its start in a four-room home, the Dominican Sisters left

San Pedro. They were replaced by

Franciscan Sisters of Asten.

The staff of San Pedro Hospital

includes twenty-three Franciscan

Sisters whose vital functions main-

tain hospital orderliness and efficien-

ey. They are assisted by fourteen

Holland nurses, three Aruban nur-

| ses, one Holland male nurse, fifty-

five nurse’s aides and fifty girls.

San Pedro Hospital will take on a

new function the beginning of next

year, and one vital to the people of

Aruba. The Oranjestad hospital's

three-year nurse’s course has been

officially recognized by Holland. Now

San Pedro Hospital is authorized to

train and graduate registered nurses

Eighteen student nurses will begin

this training Jan. 1, 1961.

San Pedro Hospital has developed

| tremendously in forty years. It has

Mr. Figaroa was the next subject

of Mr. Proterra’s congratulations and

A. W. Kelley spoke on behalf of

the Marine Department employees.

His first subject was Mr. Ellis, who

started out his marine career as a

Di'Picae Cana E1Shing Team Places Second Nemencio Solognier. In competition with thirteen countries, Aruba brought back thirty fish for a total of 1124.6 points. Winning Guadeloupe brought in fifty-six fish and amassed

the winning point total of 1293.1. The unofficial team of Mike Haagedoorn, Vincentico Cham and Leo Tjam was first in its group. The Haagedoorn

team had the distinction of bringing in more fish - sixty-three - than any

other competing team.

Behind Guadeloupe and Aruba in the standings of the first five teams were Cuba, Bonaire and the United States. Curacao placed sixth.

Curacao placed four boats in the first five trollers of the nineteen

that competed.
