Ashok Leyland Ltd., one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in India, offers a world class range of trucks, buses, special application vehicles, and engines

• Ashok Leyland Engine R&D has designed the next generation engine platform for meeting future emission norms

• Designed the complete engine structure by using Creo Elements/Pro tools for innovative design and analysis concepts, andfor robust, state of the art engine design

• ER&D (NEP) department of Ashok Leyland has developed a 6-cylinder engine mechanism. Creo Elements/Pro tools likeMechanism Design and BMX in Engine Design & Analysis provide excellent virtual visualizations of intact engine kinematics,as well as dynamics. This engine mechanism was used in varied disciplines of component design and analysis.

• Several examples are cited as snapshots, including:– Estimation of Valve projection on piston through Creo Elements/Pro (traditionally this is done through physical measurements)– Estimation of Connection reaction on Connecting Rod and other joints in Creo Elements/Pro, whereas same is obtained through

customized software– Oil volume analysis using BMX for Oil Sump design

• Reduced lead time for design and simulation process by avoiding interface with other software, and enabled componentdesign through robust design verification in Creo Elements/Pro

Atlas Copco is a world leading provider of industrial productivity solutions. Their products and services range from compressed air and gas equipment, generators, construction and mining equipment, industrial tools, and assembly systems to related aftermarket and rental.

• As a multinational company with a long history in engineering mechanical manufacturing, Atlas Copco, whoseR&D teams are spread across the world, has accumulated a large knowledge base. Products are increasinglydiversifying, and a single reliable platform is critical to stay ahead in product development and enable technicalcommunication and collaboration on a global scale.

• Atlas Copco adopted Creo Elements/Pro and Pro/INTRALINK to enable engineering calculations, top downdesign, behavioral modeling, simulation analysis, engineering drawings, data management and reuse, therebyfacilitating global collaboration.

• Enabled Atlas Copco’s factories around the world to share the knowledge base• Enabled real-time collaborative product development and technology exchange across locations• Avoided resource and technical communication inefficiencies caused by the enterprise organization• Realized efficient design

“Superior design is attributed to the combined efforts of many people. PTC’s PDM can address such problems as ‘remote users to share designs’ and ‘remote users to collaborate on designs’ , where we can utilize Creo Elements/Pro to achieve faster and more efficient product designs.”

Yan Huifang, Technical Department, Atlas Copco

Rába is one of the most significant producers and developers of independent axles. Its products are primarily installed in medium and heavy-duty trucks, military trucks, tractors, construction equipment, and buses.

• Large Isuzu order opportunity, but the existing axle construction has not met the high level quality requirements of Isuzu, and cost of production was too high

• Raba Axle Ltd decided to completely redesign the existing product with Creo Elements/Pro CAD/CAM/CAE and Windchill PDMLink technology, backed by S&T Unitis, in order to improve the quality and performance of the axle, and improve profitability.

• 40 kg mass reduction thanks to Creo Simulate optimization

• Reduction in design time from 5 days to 1 hour for the forging phases using Creo Behavioral Modeling (with S&T consultation)

• 75% time savings (8 days to 2 days) in the test approval process using a custom Windchill PDMLink process template

• 50% reduction of manufacturing costs

• Raba Axle Ltd. reached the highest level (“A” category) supplier status at Isuzu based on their excellent results

The CHALLENGE– How to push biking to the next level

The IDEA– Design new suspension system that will allow the bike to spring without bobbing, while easily absorbing

shocks and bumps.

The PROBLEM– How to avoid lengthy and costly simulation iterations?– What tools would help the engineers optimize product design and quickly understand real world

performance?

The SOLUTION– PTC’s Simulation tools including BMX and Creo Simulate made it possible to quickly evaluate

800 iterations of the model to find the best, highest quality design.

– The RESULTS– Simulation time was cut dramatically from 6-7 hours down to just

5 minutes.– Santa Cruz was able to deliver a groundbreaking suspension system which resulted in nearly doubled

revenue for the bike over one year.– It has since used Creo Elements/Pro and BMX to redesign and optimize all their existing bikes designs.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER AT SANTA CRUZ BICYCLES

"What used to take six or seven hours, now takes five minutes. With that time savings, engineering was able to gain an additional 415 minutes per simulation. That time was used to further refine the suspension system to levels previously impossible.“

~David Earle, Engineering Director, Santa Cruz Bicycles
