line-em’ up, Shut em’ OutEven though the Creighton offense leads the MVC in goals, the defense has been the true headliner. The squad currently has 11 shutouts on the season, good for the CU school record. If the Jays can post one more, they will tie the 2000 Evans-ville and 2003 Illinois State squads for MVC record for shutouts in a season.

Mont-gamer-eyAlicia Montgomery is having one of the finest seasons as goaltender not only in Creighton history, but in MVC history as well. If the season ended today, Montgomery would be tied with Andrea Shaw of Illinois State (2006) for the single season MVC record for goals against aver-age with a 0.56 mark.

Tag Team, Back AgainWhile Alicia Montgomery has logged a bulk of the minutes in net, kaitie Jo Swanson has chipped in to pro-duce a stellar season between the pipes for the CU goaltender corps. The two have combined for a 0.58 GAA and should set the Creighton single season record. The old mark was 0.81, set in 2003.

With One Comes the Other...With the goals against mark set to fall, the Creighton goals allowed mark is ready to fall as well. The Jays have allowed just 12 goals this season, and will try to top the 1998 team’s mark of 16 goals allowed.

Two-ferAnother first for Creighton is still in the works. The Jays have yet to al-low more than two goals in a match this year, and if they can continue that trend it will be the first time in school history the feat will be ac-complished.

Regional RankingsThe Bluejays started out the 2009 season 7-1-1, marking one of the team’s best starts ever. That record had Creighton ranked in the adi-das/NSCAA Great Lakes Regional rankings for seven straight weeks to start the season.

Freshman Featlaura Nasseri’s game-winning goal on Sunday was one of very few like it. Nasseri was just the third Creigh-ton freshman, and first since 2000, to score a game-winning goal in the Valley Tournament. Kori Dahlkoet-ter was the first to accomplish that feat in a 2-0 win over Illinois State in 1997, and Krystle Campa was the other, posting the game-winner in a 5-1 win over Drury.

Picking up Their gameAfter slow starts, Beth Fyles and Mary zapapas have picked up their performance. Fyles has scored three goals in her last three matches, and Zapapas has tallied four assists in her last four matches.

Short lived leadMary zapapas took the league as-sist lead outright on Friday with her sixth of the season on Creighton’s first goal. Brittney Neumann quick-ly came back to tie her in the helper column, as she posted the first as-sist on the game winning goal to knot up Zapapas.

getting One for the Pinky?Of the Creighton staff members, only Bruce erickson and Ivonne Valentin are the only two to have a hand in all four of the Jays MVC postseason titles. Erickson has been the head coach for all four, but Valentin won three as a player and served as a volunteer assistant under Erickson for 2007’s champi-onship.

Scorers TouchComing into the tournament, only two players on the roster had scored a point in the postseason. kyla hoskins had a game-winning goal in the 2007 MVC title match and emily Orbell had an assist in that season’s semifinals. So far this postseason, six different players have recorded at least one point.

Play-In PressureSince 1996, Creighton had only won one title when having to play a quarterfinal match. That came in 2007 when the Jays won their first two matches and advanced after defeating Illinois State on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Final Round RecordCreighton has played in six Val-ley championship matches since 1996. The Jays are 4-1-1 in those games, with the lone loss coming to Evansville in 1996. The tie came to Illinois State in 2003, as the Red-birds won the shootout 5-4 after a 0-0, double-overtime tie.

IlS, Cu Championship MatchesCreighton’s last match with Illinois State in the tourney came in 2007. After the Redbirds used a penalty kick goal in the 66th minute to take a 1-0 lead, kyla hoskins scored in the 87th minute to send the match to overtime, and eventually the shootout where the Jays won 4-3.

The two team’s traded first-ever ti-tles in 2003 when the Redbirds won on penalty kicks. Creighton’s Jamie Thompson and Illinois State’s Al-lison Farrington both made five saves, but it was Farrington making the only save of the shootout for a 5-4 win.

The Jays dealt ILS a tough loss in 2002 when they won the school’s first league title. Kelan Brill scored with 19 seconds left in the first overtime to give CU a 1-0 victory.

Free Soccer!Creighton has now played in eight overtime matches in MVC Tourney play, putting up a 4-1-3 mark. The Jays haven’t had the greatest luck in the shootout, losing two of the three shootouts they have done.

Smarty PantsThree Jays earned a nod to the 2009 CoSIDA District 7 All-Aca-demic Team. kyla hoskins, eden hingwing and Claire zach were the three named to the squad. Zach was honored last year by the MVC, earning a spot on the scholar-ath-lete team.

More Freshman FeatsBrittney Neumann’s great season earned her the Valley’s Freshman of the Year award. Creighton has now had two of the last three Freshman of the Year honorees, as emily Or-bell won the award in 2007. Regina Moench also won in 2001.

First Team StreakCreighton kept an impressive streak alive this year when they placed three players, kelly Connolly, em-ily Orbell and Brittney Neumann, on the conference’s first team. The Jays have had at least one player on the first team every year since they joined the league in 2006. All-in-all, 21 Bluejays have accounted for 32 first team selections in the last 14 seasons.

All-Tournament Watch28 Bluejays have earned 35 spots on the MVC All-Tournament Team. Current Jays kyla hoskins and eden hingwing both received all-tourney nods in 2007, and can join a group of five former Jays, includ-ing current coach Ivonne Valentin, that have multiple all-tournament awards. Marcy Gans and Kristina Schoeck are the only two players with three such awards.

Neumann NotesBeing a freshman hasn’t stopped Brittney Neumann from making her mark on the Jays. Neumann is just the third CU freshman to earn first team all-MVC honors and if she holds her team point lead, she will be the sixth CU frosh to lead the scoring. Jessica Powers and Regina Moench were the only other CU freshman to earn first team se-lections in 1997 and 2001 respec-tively.

National NoticeCreighton has seen its name near the top of Division I in a few team and individual statistical catego-ries. Here is a list of the latest Jays to crack the lists (stats as of 11/1 report):• Alicia Montgomery•GAA - 14th / 0.53•Save % - T14th / 0.88• Brittney Neumann•Single game points - T12th - 8 Aug. 28 vs. South Dakota•Single game goals - T16th - 3 Aug. 28 vs. South Dakota•Mary Zapapas•Single game assists - T5th - 3 Oct. 18 vs. Southern UtahAs a team CU was 21st in scor-ing offense (2.21 goals per game), 16th in GAA (0.56) and 8th in save percentage (0.88).

Creighton’s all-time winningest women’s soccer coach, Bruce Erickson will begin his 11th campaign leading the program.

Erickson has led the Bluejays to four NCAA Tournament appear-ances in the last seven seasons as his squads have played in five of the last seven Missouri Valley Conference Tournament champion-ship matches and won four of the last seven MVC postseason titles. The 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, he is the most tenured leader in Bluejay women’s soccer program history, and his 112 victories make him the most successful coach in the program’s annals. Erickson has established the Creighton women’s soccer pro-gram as one of the top teams in the conference since his arrival prior to the 1999 season. The Bluejays’ performance on the field has improved from a seven-win season in 1999 to four straight MVC tournament championship matches between 2002 and 2005 and four NCAA appearances in a six year span (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007). While on-field performance has improved in posting eight straight winning seasons, the Bluejays’ facilities have also received significant upgrades. In 2003, the Bluejays opened the $13 mil-lion Morrison Stadium, a state-of-the-art, on-campus facility which is considered to be one of the best collegiate soccer venues in the country. The Jays were unbeaten (5-0-1) at home in 2003 and are 47-13-9 (.746) in six years at the venue. Creighton has led the Valley in attendance the past six seasons and will serve as host to the State Farm MVC Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons this November. After missing the NCAA postseason in 2006, the 2007 team caught fire late in the season, captureing its fourth MVC Tournament title by prevailing over Illinois State in penalty kicks after the cham-pionship match ended in a tie. The Jays’ season ended with a loss to eventual NCAA Champion USC in the NCAA Tournament, despite being tied with the Trojans at halftime. CU posted an impressive home mark of 7-2-1 in 2007 and Emily Orbell was named the MVC Freshman of the Year. The Jays followed with a solid 12-6-1 campaign in 2008, which included another sparkling home record (8-2-1). The 2008 season was highlighted by Erickson’s 100th win at Creighton – a 2-0 triumph over Drake on Sept. 28. Marcy Gans also became the Creighton career scoring leader, finishing with 38 goals and 91 points after the 2008 season. In 2005, the Bluejays owned a high-powered attack which led the league in offense, matching the highest goal total in the Erickson era with 44 scores. Sophomore Kristine Willrett tied a school record and led the MVC with 12 assists. Creighton was dominant at home, compiling an 8-1-1 record, while winning a second straight MVC postseason title, as tournament host. The 2004 Bluejays were guided by youth, managing to capture the MVC postseason title for the second time in school history after finishing second in the regular-season with a 3-1-3 league record. Creighton’s 2003 season was marked by injuries, but Erickson still guided his team to an 11-6-4 record and a school-record 0.81 goals against average. The Bluejays also appeared in the MVC tournament championship match for the second consecutive season, falling in penalty kicks. Erickson’s 2002 squad won the MVC regular-season title, going unbeaten (6-0-1) in conference play. The Jays then captured the MVC tournament title with a thrilling 1-0 overtime win against Illinois State, advancing to the first NCAA tournament in pro-gram history. The 2002 team allowed only three goals in seven MVC matches for a 0.42 goals against average.

Erickson’s teams have ranged from offensively gifted to defen-sively stifling. The Bluejays dished 49 assists in 2001 and estab-lished a school record of 50 helpers in 2000. The Jays capitalized on their assists during that two-year run. Their 88 goals over the 2000 and 2001 seasons have been topped only by the 1989-90 teams (92 goals) for the most goals in a two-year span. In 2002 under Erickson’s guidance, Jaimie Thompson became the first goalkeeper in league history to win the MVC Player of the Year award. Regina Moench captured 2001 MVC Freshman of the Year honors and in 2004 Franny Hylok became just the second player in school history to earn all-MVC honors in each of her four seasons at CU. “Bruce is a tremendous women’s soccer coach,” Creighton Athletics Director Bruce Rasmussen said. “His experience is matched by few coaches in the country. His administrative back-ground, coupled with his knowledge of the game, make Bruce one of the top women’s soccer coaches in the country.”

The Jays’ success under Erickson extends beyond the playing field, as he has coached 22 MVC first-team scholar-athletes and the Bluejays have won the NSCAA College Team Academic Award each of the past nine seasons. In 2003, Krystle Campa earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. On the field, 14 Bluejays have earned first-team all-MVC honors during his tenure.

Another example of Erickson’s eye for talent has been reflected in the hiring of quality assistant coaches. Three of his former Bluejay assistants are currently collegiate head coaches. Heather Cairns (Utah State) and Erika True (Indiana State) both served as assistant coaches under Erickson, while Becky Heiberger (St. Cloud State) was both a player and an assistant for Erickson.

Erickson came to Creighton from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis., where he served as head men’s soccer coach from 1993-98 and director of athletics from 1995-98. He helped instill a winning soccer tradition at the NAIA school, as the V-Hawks were consistently nationally-ranked during his tenure. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native also was responsible for starting and coaching the inaugural Viterbo women’s soccer team in 1995.

While at the helm of the V-Hawk men’s squad, Erickson compiled an overall record of 69-46-6 (.595), which included five winning campaigns. He led Viterbo to three Midwest Classic Conference championships and one NAIA district title. He also earned league “Coach of the Year” four times and was named both league and NAIA District “Coach of the Year” in 1993.

Erickson has served as a high school girls’ staff coach for the Olympic Development Programs in both Wisconsin and Minnesota and holds a NSCAA advanced national diploma as well as a NSCAA goalkeeping diploma.

Before his coaching career at Viterbo, Erickson was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the V-Hawks from 1986 to 1990. He was an all-conference goalkeeper and earned NLCAA All-America honors in 1986. Erickson still holds the all-time goals against average record at the school, with a 0.87 GAA during his collegiate career.

Erickson received a bachelor of science degree in industrial psy-chology from Viterbo in December 1990. He has three children, Emma (13), Olivia (10) and Noah (8).
