waking up each morning to the harmonic sounds of songbirds, babbling creeks and, the occasional gentle rains rustling the leaves…and later in the day hearing perfectly chimed choruses of frogs and crickets in the woods

or finding the unexpected tracks of deer and rabbit.

Imagine that this feeling of sheer serenity and tranquility could be the beginning of an inspiring lifestyle, yours, shared with family and friends, and nature.

Privacy is the ultimate luxury at Wildwood Estates. Having the freedom to create your own personal lifestyle is its privilege.

Once you arrive at Wildwood Estates and travel beyond its 60- foot landmark windmill, the community’s main entrance will follow its rustic split-rail fencing to a fork in the road. There, the

two residential private roads diverge to follow the split-rail fencing that beckons you to some of the most exquisite nature preserved homesites you’ll find anywhere in the Waxhaw or Greater Charlotte area.

You’ll actually believe for a moment that you’ve left the Waxhaw area. This rare terrain reminds you more of the rolling Piedmont hills that lead to the Blue Ridge Mountains. And each individual homesite has its own unique history and topography.

Richly wooded, undisturbed natural home-sites range from 1 to 14 acres and your personal homestead can be located within each homesite’s interior to optimize the morning and setting sun, the parkland views and your sense of land ownership.

Until recent years, there was a modest family homestead on one of the homesites, dating back to the 1850s, home of wheelwright Joseph Baucom and his family. The Baucoms weren’t farmers by trade, and apparently had little need to clear vast tracts of land for farming. And as the family land was transferred from generation to generation, the hillsides and creeks remained undisturbed and were allowed to become more bountiful.

Of the 14 homesites, there is a 100-foot elevation difference, which has allowed the creation of carefully navigated driveways that adapt sensitively to the terrain to protect the inheritance of century-old hardwoods and pines, hillsides and creeks. Each personal drive also finds its way to different views and site posi-tions for your new home and lifestyle amenities.

The homeowners who have bought homesites at Wildwood Estates have appreciated this rare freedom to design the homes and life-style they really want. They only need to meet basic architectural guidelines and the local county building codes and zoning.

Knowing the history of the Waxhaw Indian tribe that inhabited the land before the Scotch-Irish and English settlers arrived affords a special appreciation of the land’s heritage. One can visualize Wildwood Estates once being a destination for hunting, trapping and fishing. Indian arrowheads have been found in the area for centuries.

And depending upon which historical account one believes regarding President Andrew Jackson’s birthplace being either in

this North Carolina vicinity or just over the stateline into

South Carolina’s Lancaster County, perhaps the young Jackson and others in the history books could have easily explored the land by foot or by horseback in their many travels.

Homesites at Wildwood Estates are called private preserves, because that’s what they are – lifestyle homes within a private

parkland, where you can live in unison with nature. Amenities can include outdoor living areas, pools, ponds, gardens, walking, biking or horseback riding trails. The kids may want a skate ramp or treehouse. There can be decks for hot tubs, kennels for pets, barns for horses, even a greenhouse or family entertainment area. There’s plenty of room to breathe and enjoy what matters most in life.

At Wildwood Estates, your home can be as close to or far from the main road and neigh-boring homesites. It can be as lavish or as simple in design and amenities as you desire. There are protective covenants for Wildwood Estates, but they were created to allow home- owner design flexibility and provide contin-ued protection for the natural environment and homeowner investment.

From Wildwood Estates, the Town of Waxhaw is only a 10-minute drive through the countryside. Chartered in 1889, Waxhaw, named for its native American Indian tribe that once lived there, is the true definition of small town Southern America with all its charm, hospitality and relaxed lifestyle.

The town’s motto “Proud of our past, passionate about our future” explains why this now third largest town in Union County sustains a lifestyle that has attracted its current 10,500 residents.

The downtown district of Waxhaw with its distinct older buildings is now home to many family restaurants, shops and offices and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its iconic wooden pedestrian bridge that spans the railroad tracks (built 1888) along Main Street, its Museumof the Waxhaws and even its iconic silver water tower, preserve the story for generations to come.

History of the Town of WaxhawThe Town of Waxhaw in Union County, North Carolina is the essence of small town America in the South – charming with a relaxed lifestyle, architecturally eclectic, having a history worth preserving…and a story worth telling for centuries to come.

Waxhaw was named for the native American Indian tribe that inhabited the area for centuries. The Town was chartered in 1889, but its history dates back to the 17th century, when the Carolina area was a key destination of the Colonial trading route from Petersburg, VA.

According to local Historian Louise Pettus, “when used in the literature, the Waxhaws generally refers to the area that has the Catawba River as the western boundary, Twelve Mile Creek (the southern border of the Indian Boundary) as the northern boundary, Gills Creek (on the north edge of the town of Lancaster) and, to the west the most indefinite line of all but roughly extending to include the town of Waxhaw, N.C.” These lands were referred to as the “Garden of the Waxhaws” and settlers from other North Carolina areas and primarily Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from Western Virginia and Pennsylvania responded quickly to the ads. By 1755, the first settler’s meeting house was built, which is in service today as Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church. The Waxhaw Settlement was a prosperous and noteworthy region, producing national leaders (most notably the 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson) and considerable wealth from its cotton fields. But by the 1830s, the once fertile soils of the “Garden of the Waxhaws” had been stripped of nutrients causing many families to move further west.

The history of Waxhaw is also the history of President Andrew Jackson and the mystery of his birthplace. According to Pettus, “the debate over Andrew Jackson’s exact birthplace is ongoing. The two most likely locations are Crawford Plantation, located

in Lancaster County, South Carolina, and the George McCamie cabin, located in what is now

Union County, North Carolina. Both sites are located only a few miles from each other and at the time of Jackson’s birth the state line had yet to be drawn.

“Jackson himself claimed on many occasions to have been born in South Carolina but it is important to remember that at the time he made these state-ments South Carolina was in a bitter dispute with the federal government. It is possible that Jackson may have been trying to show an affinity for South Carolina in order to ease difficulties with the state.“

As Pettus explained, “Andrew Jackson, Sr., died in late February, 1767. Betty traveled south to the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church to bury her husband. On the return trip, she gave birth to Andrew Jackson, the future president of the United States. Although stories abound as to the events surrounding the birth, as of yet no definitive evidence has arisen to authenticate the exact location of Andrew Jackson’s birth on March 15, 1767. ”Beyond the birthplace mystery, what is of contin-ued interest about President Jackson, is that, according to Pettus, “Betty Jackson sold the home in North Carolina and moved in with the family of her sister at the Crawford Plantation just across the border in South Carolina. Young Andrew remained here until after the death of his mother and brothers during the American Revolution. During the war, Andrew served as a messenger and was captured by the British. Following the war, he taught school briefly in the area, then moved to Salisbury, NC, to study law. At the age of 21, Andrew Jackson moved west to Tennessee and never returned to the Waxhaws region.”

History of the land hen settlers first arrived in the Waxhaw/Union County area in the 17th century, they chronicled the absolute beauty and richness of their new Carolina land with its rolling topogra-phy and grand canopies of hardwood trees and lush grasslands.

This newfound land had been the exclusive homeland of a small native American tribe called the Waxhaws, for which the Town of Waxhaw is named. Unfortunately, ongoing battles with neighboring tribes and a small pox

epidemic by the 1740s nearly obliterated the tribe, whose few remaining members abandoned the land, often called the “Garden of the Waxhaws,” and merged into other tribes for survival. As land agents sold parcels to the rush of settlers, primarily from western Virginia and Pennsylvania, much of this expansive rolling land was eventually cleared for grazing, farming and cotton production.

In recent years, in the heart of Waxhaw country-side, a heavily wooded 100-plus acre property off Davis Road became available for purchase to adjacent

neighbors Bill and Mary Peyton Cochran. The land had been in the Baucom-Tarleton-Steele family for many generations, but it had been sold to a lady whose grandson occupied the property until approx-imately 10 years ago.

The original homestead (circa mid 1800s), now situated on Preserve 7, had been home to local wheelwright Joseph Thomas Baucom, whose primary trade involved shaping wood and iron by hand into wheels for wagons and carriages. While the land’s distinctive hillsides and creeklines boast forests of century-old hardwoods, any partially cleared acres once devoted to family farming have remained virtually undisturbed for nearly a half century.
