Introduction• The real value in transitioning to a virtual desktop

environment is realized when a variety of seemingly conflicting requirements are met• End users are happy• Organizational needs for Security and Compliance are

met• G6/CIO has the control needed without adding costly

resources• Overall system performance and cost of ownership are

improved

Definition• Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice

of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server. VDI is a variation on the client/server computing model, sometimes referred to as server-based computing. The term was coined by VMware Inc. but now tends to be used as a generic term for desktop virtualization, not a particular vendor.• Technically, VDI is the infrastructure (hardware and

software) that makes desktop virtualization possible.

Page 4: CredoGov VDI Introduction

VDI basic differences with RDP, Remote FX, Terminal Services• VDI• Individual Virtual Machine for each user• More tailored/customized user desktop experience• Fewer issues with application compatibility

• Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP, RemoteFX)• One Windows Server Operating System and a set of

applications that are shared with multiple users• Possible application issues that may not be easily dealt

with• Users cannot freely tailor/customize their desktop

Benefits• Security – Better (Gartner)

• Data is secure in the data center typically with enterprise backup, disaster recovery and High Availability solutions

• If the virtual desktop/endpoint is lost or stolen, data is in the data center

• Manageability - Better (Gartner)• Centralizes management of the endpoint to the data center

• Flexible and Consistent access to desktop, not constrained to your local office and desk

• Endpoint refresh cycle can be longer (Gartner)• Quickly provision new virtual desktops• Savings in reduced support costs including reduced help desk calls• Power savings based on lower Power Consumption (Gartner)• Access to virtual desktop from various endpoints including mobile devices• Thin and Zero clients as PC replacements can provide lower cost (Gartner)

Page 6: CredoGov VDI Introduction

Considerations• Requirements Analysis, Proper Design and

implementation• Ensure proper performance for all user classes, eliminate

or mitigate single points of failure, etc.

• Communication to properly set user expectations• Virtualization does not work well with all applications

• Must assess all applications and mitigate potential issues

• Many organizations have extended the useful lifetimes of their desktop PCs leading, in some cases, to capital savings. However, this strategy has simply raised operational expenses and user downtime (Gartner).
